  • Legendary Bodybuilder and Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman was on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast recently and claimed to have had a 0.33% body fat percentage while he was competing as a professional bodybuilder. Yes, you heard that right, 0.33%! In this video we'll break down why that number is impossible and the role of essential body fat.

What does it tell you exactly about his health? I would like to know because all I’m getting is a bodybuilder died and they did a autopsy on him. Nothing about his health in that what so ever he could of died from being hit by a car then an autopsy would be done to find out what damage was/wasn’t done and specifically how he died. Just because an autopsy is done doesn’t mean you died from health issues.
Sure you can go find out why it was done and he might of been very unhealthy but from the info given in this video you can’t know anything about the bodybuilders health.

Since he used the caliper method, that was the number he came up with. Although he, as a layman, was obviously unaware of essential fat, the number he came up with was most probably an accurate measurement of his subcutaneous fat.

I know some of the guys at my gym will get down to crazy low body fat, but it’s for a day maybe 2 days but as soon as the competition was over they would go back up up to 5% but yeah for a day a few hour at 2/1% I can see it.

I suppose it depends highly on the type of equipment/test utilised as well. It might be a result of miscalculations after all the math of the skin-fold test Hahahaha. Based on what I've seen in the NBA draft combine over the years, 3-5% seems to be the norm for the leanest guys in the draft. Former dunk champion Terrance Ross posted 3.2% in the 2012 combine.

Body builders have been known to Drop to around 1% and in a few cases even below 1% for short periods of times due to competitions. Now for Ronnie Coleman no reports ever officially say he reached below 1% but there are a few reports saying he was at 1%. The judges think he only stayed around that body fat percentage for maybe a day at most

I would guess they used calipers back in the early 2000’s when we has competing and found that he has .33% storage body fat under the skin, meaning he was probably around 2.5 to 3% total body fat, just non on the surface of his body

Is it possible to increase your lean mass so much that your relative fat % could be less than 1%? Example Olympic marathon runners are around 3-5% with an average weight of 150 pounds. If they packed on 150 pounds of additional muscles without increasing fat stores could they drop to around 1.5%?

tbf there are like 20 different ways to measure body fat and depending on the method the same person can a body fat percentage ranging from 5% to 17%. so him saying he had a body fat percentage of 0.33% can't really be taken literally.

Ronnie was definitely talking about about surface fat, that is the fat that would have mattered to him as a body builder. They probably didn't have all the tools to measure body fat back in the days, so I would I assume they used something like clippers which can't measure anything else but the fat right under the skin.

Depending on the method used to measure body fat 0.33 could easily be within the margin of error as some methods are 4 to 6 %off so he probably isn't lying just saying the results of the test the problem is alot of tests are gross estimates

I think the whole thing could just bei an error in messuring his body fat. Coleman competet in the late ninetyes into the early two thousands, messuring methods expecially for essential body fat wich is way harder to detect, where not nearly as advanced as now.

  • @TheFamineHorseman

Okay but how does essential fat scale with body size for example if I am 10% body fat 150 lbs right controlling all variables if I maintain my level of fat perfectly but gain 50 lbs of lean muscle mass that would drop my total body fat down even though I haven’t lost or gained any so where I am wanting more research on is how does our essential fats scale with size in Ronnie Coleman’s example right say you need 3% to live with essential fats at 180 lbs for the average man do the essential fats scale up so obviously being super lean no storage fats at 180lbs would be insane but Ronnie Coleman competed at 300lbs + the same 5.4 lbs or 3% would they need to scale up the more muscle he puts on so at 5.4lbs of essential fats would it then be

I got to admit I absolutely love Ronnie it’s the reason I started lifting but he is way way Way off on some things he says on stats. He is honest with his weight 325-335 in offseason and 280-298 on stage but 0.33 BF any person of intelligence is absolutely and completely impossible. Even 3.3% walking around on daily basis is impossible. That was around his competing BF he only had to Maintain for short time for stage. On stage he was probably 3-7% BF competing and 12-20% BF in offseason.
