Black Mouth Cur Rescue - The breed is amazing - smart, sweet & CUTE!

  • On some divine or insane impulse (you decide) we flew to Florida from Colorado to adopt a black mouth cur dog we saw at the humane society in Inverness. Got settled in Orlando around 2am the morning of 9/12/14, got a few hours sleep before heading to PetSmart and Whole Foods to stock up for an adventure of adopting a dog followed by a 3 day cross-country trek back to Colorado. Much to our dismay the dog turned out to be aggressive and not a good fit for our other dog. This was all about finding a sweet dog to cheer up our other dog because we had just lost our other dog! Following? So, getting anything less than a sweet and submissive dog was out of the question. Once we got over the heartbreak and shock and forgave ourselves for being such romantic idiots we realized we would be driving through the heart of black mouth cur dog country and started shopping the rescue sites. We found our girl in Many, Louisiana at the Sabine Humane Society. An amazing facility that is very clean, filled with gorgeous rescue animals and run by a top notch group of incredibly kind and wonderful humans! They were closed on Saturday, but we somehow got a hold of the right people who got the cogs and gears moving and arranged to have someone there to meet us on Saturday so we could meet Nia (her shelter name). It was love at first sight and we feel deeply blessed to have had this little girl come into our lives. Magic is real and miracles do happen. Thank you Chris (Black Mouth Cur rescue coordinator), Ellen (Sabine Humane Society rescue manager), Jack (Sabine Humane Society kind soul who opened the gates for us and led us to Kirra Nia Ellen Crawdad) and to the folks at the Family Farm & Garden Center in Many, Louisiana who made a great name tag (free for all adoptions) and made us feel very welcome! Life is good!

    Having just rescued a BMC from southern Georgia in mid July, I'm crying watching this video. That's our experience too and after it, how could anyone not be totally in love with Curs? Their shyness, those eyes that seek approval, their fierce play, and their incredible yet subtle intelligence! They're so full of love and just looking for a solid leader to protect them and give them a space in this world. What a beautiful video - thank you so much for sharing it. After 7 weeks with our 1-year-old BMC rescue, it's clear this is a love story that's going to last life long.

    My little buddy Ike is my best friend. He's a 2 year old BMC and I don't ever want to get a different breed. He is super smart, super tough, and aims to please me. He does whatever I say, plays rough with me (6'1 - 200lbs 26 year old) but plays soft with my little nieces and nephews and he also cuddles with me and my wife at night and is such a lush. I dread the day he dies but know that when that time comes I'll be happy because he died happy and lived a full and wonderful life. Best dog ever.

      Ike is so lucky to be with you and you are so lucky to have found him! They really are the best dogs ever! Kirra and Mango continue to love being island girls and they play from before sunrise to long after sunset, with a nice long siesta during the heat of the day. Mango came from a dark background and was literally a mangy BMC mutt when she was taken in by her foster mom who got her on a healthy path and hooked her up with our heartbroken family after we lost Bella (our first BMC). She was the best medicine ever for the grief we were all feeling, especially Kirra. Kirra is simply amazing ... she is very much a therapy dog. She is as sweet as a dog can be, her fur is softer than anything else on the planet and she loves nothing more than to be petted, rubbed, kissed, scratched ... basically just touch her with your big toe and she's happy! We feed them both Acana dog food and even though it's expensive it's incredible. Mango went from a bony waif with fur like sandpaper to a gorgeous athletic dog with fur like silk. I love your attitude in prep for losing these very special friends. It's still the hardest thing ever though ... losing a dog. Thanks for writing! Wishing you and Ike a very long and very special life of happiness together!

      How does he do off leash in the woods, say, on a hike? Stay close or want to range looking for critters?

    • @bellaloco7910
      @bellaloco7910 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't really take either of my Black Mouth Cur's off leash because they can't help but chase wildlife. I'm not into hurting anything, so I choose to keep them on the extended leashes where they can have plenty of room to rove but can't run off and wreak havoc. I have e-collars but have not put the time in to train myself or Kirra and Mango yet. :-)

    I adopted a female much like this... adopted and returned by 2 families and boarded by the rescue group as 'too disruptive' (code for " too much for us to handle"). I saw her and that she needs a job (retrieving) and adopted her and never a problem of any sort all these years later

    I fostered my Cur German Shepherd Mix since she was 5 weeks old, she was filled with worms, her foster mate unfortunately did pass away due to the worms.
    She also returned twice, and I just decided right then to adopt her.
    She is so loyal, sweet and smart
    She is like my best friend.

    We rescued a BMC female for a shelter in Florida as well. Vet says she's about 9 years old, sad to know this because we love her so much already. She is very energetic and loves long hikes. She is reactive with other dogs, but will let them into the house once she realizes they aren't a threat and that we insist on it. She is so smart, I have begun to think she understands spoken english. Her muzzle isn't dark black so many assume she's a pit bull mix, in Florida this isn't uncommon for BMCs. Love our girl.

    We rescued a BMC from the pound last summer. She came with us but soon started showing signs of having kennel cough. Thru much research discovered Cod liver oil as an excellent cure due to the vitamin A properties and so far has been working great. Our whole family have fallen head over heels in love with our dog, which by the way she also has 1 extra toe in the back (not a dewclaw). She has taken a role as our guard dog on our 10 acres. Best dog in the world!

    I have a Black Mouth Cur and a Mountain Cur. They get plenty of outside time, and they're both great dogs inside the house. There's nothing like settling in for a movie and having a cuddlebug on each side. I'll probably opt for smaller dogs when I'm older, but cur dogs will always be at the top of my list.

    My wife’s daughter just rescued an 18 month old BMC, Ginger. She’s tall and lean, beautiful and playful. It’s odd how someone didn’t want such a great dog. Never been around this breed until I met Ginger. She’s so awesome that I’m thinking of rescuing one - like her. Her color is balanced and her demeanor is so sweet. She’ll play with any dog. I can see the mastiff in her and her markings are striking. Her inquisitive nature and good energy is just right for her days on their small farm. ❤️🐕

    I adopted from a rescue shelter Jan. 2016 and brought home "my" Ella. She was already 7yrs with grey on her muzzle but once i saw that face I did not care! She is everything others have said: smart, sweet, playful, and strong. She wants to meet everyone we see - dog or human - when we walk with the leash. She has the run of the house: the sofa, the human beds, everything. A wonderful companion, stubborn at times. When she doesn't want to walk in the direction i want to go she just plants her feet and hangs her head, looks at me sideways, and won't budge! I live in coastal SC and almost no one here has every heard of this breed. My BMC is 76 lbs. at this time.

    We just found an 8 month old BMC running around the streets back in March. I took him home hoping to find his owner but no one ever claimed him. He is very cute, very playful and VERY hyper. He is really good with playing with the kids but sometimes he gets too excited and jumps on them even though he knows he's not supposed to.

    Thank you for sharing this story. I just lost my 9 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback to Adrenal Gland cancer. I am devastated. She was an amazing companion. I am left with another wonderful boy, though. He is a Hungarian Vizsla, and is very depressed since the loss of our RR. I have read many wonderful things about Curs. I hope to find one at a rescue, sometime soon.

      trish flik Very sorry to hear of your loss. It's one of the hardest things in life. You know you sign up for it when you adopt a pet, and they are worth it in spades, but it's still one of the most painful things in life. I know you will find your special someone. I've nothing but good things to say about the Cur dogs. They are really amazing. Kirra continues to blow me and everyone else away. She is incredibly smart, kind, friendly and funny with the most beautiful smile in her eyes and in her heart I've ever seen in a dog. Wishing for you and your Vizsla to find happiness again soon with some very lucky dog bringing the fun back into your lives.

    I adopted a part black mouth cur seven years ago and have never had a better dog in my life. I actually wanted a medium sized dog but when I saw Robb (his given name was Rob; I just embellished it with another B) he looked at me with those big brown eyes and said "take me home." He needed some work but I knew he was a diamond in the rough. For the most part Curs just want to please. They are smart, loving, and beautiful dogs.

    I am from Colorado and now live in Florida land of the Cur Dog.
    My screen name is ConnieJRT because I have had Jack Russells for 20 years but after adopting a BMC last year I might become ConnieBMC! This is a wonderful breed. We have a male who we rescued full grown, no matter, it's like he has been a family member his entire life. Absolutely no issues what so ever. Our Willie is around 50 lbs. for which I am very happy. A bigger dog would have been hard and male BMCs can get up to 90 lbs.! That's why it's so great to rescue a grown dog. I still have 2 old, ornery JRT's who don't much like Willie but he is still sweet to them. I highly recommend these lovely dogs. FYI, male BMCs prefer their female owners :) which is great because my Jacks prefer my husband :(
    Adopt a Cur Dog, you won't regret it!

      @bellaloco7910 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I'm not the only Colorado/Florida BMC mama! They really are incredible dogs! Kirra definitely prefers females over males (makes me wonder about her young little life before she joined our family) but the more nice males she meets the more trusting she is. It only takes her a moment to warm up to a guy, but no time at all to a gal. Have to tell this - there was a cat meowing on the tv last night and she went and stood directly in front of it with her nose about a foot away -head dipping left and right in curiosity. It was hilarious. Daily laughs = good medicine!

      I'm in Florida and just visited the shelter north of me on Sunday and they have a BMC mix that I truly connected with. He's not ready to be adopted yet but is 2 to 3 years old. He was found having a cut on his right hind leg that was pretty deep and they cleaned him up and he healed well. He has a scar but he doesn't seem to be a big Barker and was all about the companionship

      @@conniejrt4762 I've had great pups before but Hans seems to be in a whole other level. He looked in my eyes and I could almost see the connection. So, yes with emphasis. I do need to probably foster first to be sure he gets along in the house as I have a cat, this being Cornelius in my name. Going to look to do the intro thing and hope it will be okay. Hans is said to be good with other dogs so that it's a good sign.

    I adopted a six month old BMC from a shelter 7 years ago, the day after I lost my miniature dachshund. This dog is the most obedient, loyal, friendly, easy going and lovable pet I've ever owned. He has never ONCE growled or snapped at ANYONE since the day we brought him home, not even aggressive young children. The ONLY drawback with these dogs is their inherent desire to chase squirrels and cats. He's ripped through several of our lanai screens when the critters came into our yard. But the pros far outweigh the cons, and I hope he lives forever because there will never be another like him.

    Kirra is the spittin' image of our old dog Dewie, who passed away a few years ago. She was a stray rescue who appeared on our porch 1 Sunday morning & was the best thing that ever happened to us. Living in the North, no one here ever had the slightest idea that she was a Black Mouth Cur.
    Coincidentally, before Dewie showed up, a stray rescue cat [who is tied for the 2nd best thing that ever happened to us] followed us home to that same porch 1 Friday night. i said that he looks like a Little Lion, so we called him Lionel :-)

    (Thank you Gabriella) We checked their DNA and for sure Black mouthed cur for a mom and other breeds. Our "Bella" could be a sister to your sweet dog.

      +Charlie Mayhew Congratulations! I just adopted another BMC pup because I lost my older one. Kirra has blossomed into a truly magnificent soul. She blows everyone away by her gentleness and beauty. The new pup, Mango, is a hoot and idolizes Kirra. Enjoy your new pups and thanks for posting!

    We got a BMC last Oct. 2016 so he's still a puppy. I have had training with three other dogs with no training. They breezed right through their training no problem. However, with Chopper since day one he has been very disruptive, and just unbelievably unmanageable. He refuses to walk a leash and pulls and this dog is probably a good 75-80 pounds, so me pulling him is out of the question. Wherever we are he has to be in our faces especially with company. He barks uncontrollably at other dogs going by and neighbors the same. If he isn't with someone on a daily basis he forgets who they are and barks at them the same as beginning. He digs holes in the yard and chews on everything. Don't say he needs toys, because we know this but everything we have bought for him, in a heavy dog toy, he has just ripped apart and then swallows. I'm at my wits end. We have done everything for him ppl have recommended. I'm even thinking about rehoming him. He's a beautiful dog, you can see he wants to play and that's all that's on his mind. I don't know what else to do. He has a yard and we have to block drive the driveway shut to keep him from running up and jumping on the ppl going by. Everyone on the street now walks their dogs in opposite direction because of Chopper. Would love to hear any advice and would appreciate it. I'm also on Facebook Pauline Wallace you can message if you want to. You can see he's gentle with kids and babies. He wanted to stay in my new grandbabies face licking her the two days we were with her. Thanks for listening.

    We had a yellow black mouth cur like your girl. He passed away in 2013, and we found a fawn colored BMC. Can't seem to live without one. Beautiful music. What is it?

      Hi! Very happy to hear you found a new BMC to help keep you laughing and smiling daily. The beautiful music is by Brooks Williams and is titled O Leaozinho from his Little Lion album. I wish we could post pictures on here so we could all see everyone's special canine friends.

    I've had a dog for around four years now and I can't tell if she's just a black mouth cur or a mix. I've been searching forever but can't find a match. The thing I'm confused about is that shes an adult, but is a bit bigger than the average BMC puppy. Anyone have any ideas what she is?

      Mine are not purebreds, but they do not drool at all. Except when they are sitting politely waiting for the okay to eat their meals. :-) They are truly exceptional companions!

    Is she full grown? How big did she get? I have a half BMC half Anatolian Shepherd, but she looks just like your pup. She grew to 100lbs. She looks like a giant BMC, I think she gets her size from the Anatolian she has in her.

    • @bellaloco7910
      @bellaloco7910 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She grew steadily but seems to have slowed/stopped. I think she's probably around 60 to 65 lbs now. She is incredibly wonderful! Very smart, extremely funny and overwhelmingly loving. She and our older dog are best buddies and play all day long. We are spending the winter on a bridge-less barrier island and Kirra can't stay out of the water. It's ridiculously funny and charming. She looks like a dolphin leaping and bounding along through the waves as we walk the beach. She has enriched our lives beyond measure. Especially our older dog. We are all very, very happy! Thanks to everyone for the great comments and for the obvious love of animals.

    a 'puff piece' ... they are NOT a breed for most folks... MOST folks never take a dog all the way through even 1 obedience class.. See? BMC needs a job to do all the time... and obedience can be it.

    Kirra turns two tomorrow! Happy Birthday Kirra!
    We lost our other dog, Bella, Labor Day weekend 2015, and rescued another BMC right away. Kirra and Mango are the best of friends and spend their days walking the beach (moved to Florida), racing around chasing each other and enjoying loads of petting, scratching and hugs. They are mega happy! You could not ask for better entertainment! Rest in peace Bella! You were our first Black Mouth Cur and the sweetest girl ever. You were taken far too young, being only eight. We will love you forever!
