    Been tattooing for over 20 years but I still find your videos great to watch. They help me to help others. Easy to forget things I take for granted. I will also bloodline, whip the ends of a line so it fades out or use graywash to get a soft edge when doing a more realistic style. I see a lot of new people tattoo a solid bold line for everything. So their realistic rose ends up looking more like it came from a coloring book. I think you should cover shading and how not to overwork the skin and still get fully saturated skin. I remember a time when I'd cuss yellows and whites all of the time because I would cautiously underwork those colors. Much easier to do now with good inks like Fusion and #10 or #8 bugpin configurations.

      Its funny that you mentioned grey lining and whip shading. I had recorded some instruction on that but removed it. Felt like we were just talking about solid lines here. Its true that you don't always want solid lines. That will have to be for another video. I try to stay on subject even though it is really easy for me to trail off on other subjects. I've talked to several artist who like using bugpin needles for packing color. I like to use short tapered needles for color packing. I also like bugpins but short tapers are my go to when packing color.

      That's the thing experienced artist forget what they had to go through to learn. I decided from the beginning to keep track of everything and document it. A lot of the expert videos don't teach you what it takes to get to that point.

      This is an awesome rad web page to learn to tat. Do you tatters recommend tat pens from Amazon? They are cheap? Or are they? I was thinking of putting an ad in craigslist once i get my tat gun to get practice and earn lots of money. Is this what you tatters did to start?

    Hi ! I'm french and a beginner and I just wanna tell you thanks for your videos : you're speaking slowly and your english is very understandable for foreigners so I can easily understand all your videos. It's very hard to find good tutorials and yours are the best ! There is no french people doing these kind of tutorials on TH-cam because being a tattoo artist in France is quite hard and very "old school", nobody wants to help new tattoo artists to learn how to practice if you're no following the "right process" (like finding an apprenticeship in a tattoo shop). Sooooo : thanks a lot, I'm learning so much with you guys ! Yesterday I watched your video about right needle depth and the butter thing, and I tried to do it and to understand the "pushing back thing" while I'm tattooing but for now it's not very obvious to me (but I'll keep trying for sure). Anyway, sorry if I'm not speaking correctly and have a good day !

      Don't be sorry about speaking english. Not everyone speaks the same language. I'm glad to help. Tattooing takes practice. The more you practice the more you learn and adjust.

    THANK YOU!!!.. I'M STILL LEARNING AND KINDA FIGURING THINGS OUT AS I GO, AND Y UP IT'D YOU'VE HELPED ME IMMENSELY JUST BY HOW YOU BREAK IT DOWN. I CAN'T WAIT TOP IMPLEMENT YOUR TECHNIQUES. I'VE ALWAYS DONE PENCIL DRAWINGS,OR SHARPIE, AND U MAKE IT SO SIMPLE BY USING THE SAME METHODS AS I WOULD USE FOR ANY DRAWING... FOR THE MOST PART, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PAPER AND SKIN, AND SPEED, AND NEEDLE SIZE, AND THE FACT THAT U CANT WORK SKIN LIKE PAPER. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP. I'M GOING TO CONTINUE TO FOLLOW YOUR VIDEOS. THIS TRULY IS MY PASSION AND I WANT TO DO THE BESTV WORK I CAN DO

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you start tattooing you will see that some things are the same. Some drawing techniques work with tattooing. Mixing colors with paint or markers are similar with a little difference. Keep drawing and practicing! The more you do the better when you will become.

      I think the voltage was too high. When that happends its goes too hard in the skin and you get blow outs

    Can’t appreciate more! But one question: why only adjust the depth when using rotary machine, what if I turn up the voltage to increase the needle speed? (Will i get more ink into the skin or causing more damage to the skin?)

      No need to thank me. It's the truth alot of artist don't like to give out any information tattooing. I've been tattooing for like a year trying to get an apprenticeship but nobody wants to help others where I'm at. I've had a few different jobs I'm a culinary grad but this is what makes me happy and people like you are where it's at.

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like to share because I'm not afraid. Afraid someone is going to take my job or be better than me. I tattoo because I love to do it. Some tattoo artist don't like to share because they are worried. Too many tattoo artist will take away their work. Tattoo industry is growing and everyone is getting tattoos now. People go to the tattoo artist who have a good reputation. Instead of worrying all the time they should just focus on being a better salesman. Focus on their artwork and their clients satisfaction. People need to stop being afraid of everything and start doing awesome stuff. Being afraid keeps things from improving. Learning and spreading the truth will take things to another level of greatness.

    • @robbutler3651
      @robbutler3651 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree and if their that afraid I really don't want to learn from them. I would rather learn from someone like you that has confidence

    Hi, Thanks for the tutorials!
    I have a question. What causes the issue that you can see that the needle is made out of more needles when lining. So it's not complete solid. Thanks

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you are talking about a shader or loose needle group. There are a lot of needles that form a round point. They are not a tight group. This is good for shading in color or building up lines but you don't get a nice crisp solid line on the outside. Use a tighter group or lining needle to clean it up.

    Couldn't u just go with say a 9 0r 11 rl ? Wouldnt that a lot faster and or cleaner?

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are doing one liners. You would want to go with a bigger needle group. This is just technique to clean up lines and make them bigger if needed or if this fits your style better.

  • @crushingization
    @crushingization 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man can I send you some images of my first line work for your input? I have been watching you and a couple other artists and started tattooing but no one to critique my work from a professional standpoint.

  • @midmonobody411
    @midmonobody411 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay , So your saying to do swirls to make a solid line? What about tight detailed artwork ? How,would you prevent the swirl effect on small stuff.

    • @midmonobody411
      @midmonobody411 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only ask cause im just getting into this and i have already started tattooing myself. I want to get better line work and shading.

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need to do small circles if you get a clean line. You can also just run the line again to clean it up. The best thing would be to get it in good the first time.

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also when you are doing circles you don't really see them if you keep it tight. You are making the motion but the finished product is a line. The motion is really tight.

    • @TattooUniversity

      I've read a lot of tattoo books. That book made a lot of sense. I found a lot more useful information in that book then I did most others. It looked at tattooing from an artistic view. Something more people need to focus on. If you have no artistic talent then your tattoos going to look like doo doo.

      Lol...maybe the word you're looking for is "he's", not his....please educate yourself before commenting with terrible grammar that makes you seem uneducated....wait for it....wait for it.... lol. I'm ready, but I'm not one to entertain anyone without proper education. I try to give them the benefit of the doubt, since I feel bad that they didn't learn basic grammar in English class. And yes, common sense isn't that common. Keep doing what your doing.
