3 Tig Welding TIPS to IMPROVE TECHNIQUE!

  • I'm sure I could ramble on for an hour, but today I'm going to pick my best 3 Tig Welding Tips, that will get a beginner off to a good start by improving some technique. Body mechanics and posture aren't usually taught in any classes and tutorials I've seen, and I would argue that it's a massive part of Tig Welding. We spend hours straight trying to master a finicky and tedious art, so why not make it a bit easier on yourself?? Hopefully these tips can help out a little bit, and take some of the headache out of welding when someone is just getting going with the trade. Hope you enjoy!

    I've been going to school for welding without any prior experience. This video gave me something visual I can focus on that helped me improve almost immediately. Thanks to you my grades are looking that much better!

    While we're on the subject, I wanted to share a couple exercises that were suggested on reddit. The first is for practicing arc control - get a coin, pencil, and a sheet of paper, and practice moving the coin around by pushing on its edge with the pencil lead; the idea is to not leave a single mark on the paper. The other exercise is to get a coloring book and practice coloring with your non-dominant hand to build dexterity for better control with your filler rod.
    They might sound silly, but I actually noticed a pretty big improvement in my welds after practicing them for a few days. Especially if you only have access to a tig welder intermittently, they're a great way to hone your skills during the in between times, and you can keep the practice materials with you for any times where you just have a few minutes to kill.

    Love the attitude keep it up we do need to spread the love. Just started welding classes a couple months ago at the college a little late life change. At 67 years old I've seen a lot of good and a lot of bad. Your videos I think you're very good mostly because of the great attitude. My philosophy is I'm doing great but I'll get better and we just need to pass that on to everybody.

  • @matthewperlman3356
    @matthewperlman3356 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I'm certainly no expert, but one thing I do that I think helps to address some of the issues you mentioned in this video, is that before I actually start a weld pass, I will do a quick dry run of the planned pass. This let's me identify restrictions and interferences to hand movement and line of sight beforehand.
    I would like to here your thoughts on that approach.

    Thank you! I have been welding since 1980, yet every time I watch your videos I learn something that helps me greatly. Coincidentally, the best TIG welder I ever knew was my stepmother Anna, and guess where she lives? In Skook, on your beautiful island. She was known for welding small bore stainless so close to a wall she taped a mirror to the wall to do the backside! Hell, I can’t even stick weld in a mirror! I am left handed like your self. Stay positive and peace, Brother.

    This is very inspiring and exactly what I needed to get me past a frustrating plateau. Tip number one I've seen, read, heard so many times but it may only now be achievable after seeing tips 2 and 3- which NOBODY has shown me. That shot in explaining Tip 3, where you laid down the filler rod to show line of sight was like a light flooding my brain. Awesome. Would love to know more about actual hand grip technique(s) too (I'm a drummer and obsess over hand/wrist position/motion...lol). Keep up the great work Dusty. Your artwork is brilliant btw. Cheers!

    I got brought into welding before I graduated and I got experience in the field and been working in a shop since, I got the basics of tig, mig, and stick. The only thing I struggled with has been my Tig consistency and thanks to watching this video this morning I laid a beautiful tig bead on stainless. I was guilty of the restricted hand posture, my weld visibility here and there, and letting my arc get further away from my work piece, but with a little bit of focus on the subjects of this video it made it a lot better!

    • @esbalska3565

      Also a little weird thing about me is I'm left handed but I Tig weld right handed. It just feels right having my filler rod in my dominant hand instead of my non dominant hand. So practicing control with the tig in my right hand helped with ambidextrous welding!
