  • Practice skins don't work like real skin. See how you can make a better practice skin. More realistic practice will help you prepare for the real thing. Improve your linework with the proper techniques.

    As a beginner with a LOT of technique to learn and a lot about the tattooing process I have yet to understand (so far I know next to nothing), your approach to instructing and explaining is the best I’ve seen so far. Thank you so, so much for providing this valuable resource, sharing your expertise and hard earned experience with myself and others like me!

    I’ve been practicing on my legs. I like your philosophy on self tattooing. I’ve been doing small stuff on my thighs. I’m a dude and wear pants and shorts so it’s not like I need to worry about someone seeing me in a bikini lol.

      I did the same thing as you, Joshua Nesbitt, years ago. Only thing is I just did a single line roughly 2 inches on my thigh close to my knee because I knew I could add and change it in the future plus no one would really see and if they did it was only a single line. Obviously line work practice comes first. It was good just to get the feel of it on real skin. Afterwards I did a couple stars on my hand by my thumb and then eventually bigger, more complex things on myself. Worked out good for me. Haven't tried it on others yet. That's why I'm watching educational videos once again. Fake skin and ''similar'' objects just don't seem like good practice to me. I could be wrong but I guess we all have our own opinions. Cheers to the guy that made this video. It is a good video. Helpful for sure.

    My biggest question is, how do you see the needle is to start your line? Can you see it? To me it seems almost invisible because it's moving so fast and covered with ink. What i'm talking about is the line tracing, you can see the line on the client, but lining up the needle to the line on the client.

    I keep seeing tattooists applying petroleum jelly, A&D ointment, you're using a Shea butter cream, but no one has actually said why. Is it to help the needle glide across the skin easier? Or to help the ink penetrate the epidermis? To keep the trauma and inflammation to a minimum? All of the above lol?

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People don't like using petroleum jelly. They think it is bad for them. I have used it and it works. A&D also works. I use the body butter because it isn't slimy. I helps in the tattooing process but it also helps remove excess ink. A little body butter makes it easier to clean the area. Shea and coconut oil smells better and has multiple uses. I also give it to the client for aftercare. I make it myself so I can adjust it to what I like. Just my preference to use that.

    What are your thoughts on blood lining when needed?
    For example losing a stencil.. bloodlines are not very good for realism but any thoughts regardless?

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't use blood lining much. I don't really have any issues with my stencil coming off. I like to try things out and will blood line some more just to see how much it helps me. Right at this moment I really don't use it. If I want a line and don't want it in the skin I usually just draw with a marker or use the ink on the tip to freehand my line.

    You said to not use or add anything really alcohol related after the first initial cleaning. I have blue soap which is like green soap and im wondering if that would be ok to use since its diluted with distilled water??? Sorry if its a dumb question I'm JUST starting. Been on the receiving end but never on the giving end lol

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blue soap looks like green soap. It is one of those natural soaps. Thing with green soap is they like to add alcohol. Problem is we are being taught that alcohol and hand sanitizer is better than soap and water. This is not the case. Soap and water do the trick. That is why they tell you to wash your hands. Hand sanitizer is not effective if you put it on dirty hands. It is like putting tattoo equipment in ultrasonic cleaner. You are supposed to clean it first or it can't do the job correctly. Best thing to do is use both but I'm stressing here that soap and water is awesome stuff. I'm always being asked about green soap, red soap, purple soap, and it goes on and on. If it has chemicals in it that irritate the skin you don't want to use it. If it has stuff in it that people are allergic to you don't want to use it. You want to use something that does the job and isn't going to make things worse. The blue soap ingredients I looked up are the same as most soaps. Just need to make sure it isn't loaded with fragrance or alcohol.

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Always buy ink from a reputable dealer. Eternal, Fusion, Mom's, Intenze.......
      Always buy it from a dealer so you know it hasn't been tampered with. Buy your supplies the same way. You will have to try out a couple to see what is good for you. I like to buy my equipment from builders. Someone who has a good reputation is the key. Talk to people and see who does good business. You can find builders on social media. Don't buy from anyone on ebay. Talk to people and make sure they are on the up and up. If they are sending pictures of their equipment ask them to take a photo with the date written on a piece of paper next to it. If you don't trust anyone then you have to buy from a company. I would go through someone who has a good refund policy. Make sure you can send the equipment back if you are unhappy with it. Companies sell a lot of garbage equipment. This is why I like to use artist and builders who tattoo. They know what works good and last a long time.

    • @TattooUniversity

      You also use ointment on a person while you tattoo

      @@mikemaranon5092 have you heard of body butter? It is an ointment used. Inkeeze is another brand. These are ointments used for tattooing. Used by a wide variety of artist.

    Thanks for the tip man , just got my first gun and I’m diving into the world of tattoos , I’m going to practice a lot and my first actual tat done by myself will be on my thigh , what’s the basics I will need for needles , the pack I bought only has liners , , any decently priced place to get needles? And what’s good ink ? I wanna do this right , also what’s the big difference between round liners and regular

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you never want to use cheap inks. Unless it is on practice skin. I like eternal and fusion inks. There are many different ways to tattoo and set up your machines. Do what works for you without injuring the clients. There are different types of needle groups. We use the term liner and shader. That really means a tight group of needles or a loose group. Loose group is good for shading more and filling in area. Tight group is good for solid line work.

      Tattoo University I been binge watching ur vids since this one , thanks man . I’m trying not to be cheap . I’m a carpenter by trade and I especially know that quality tools lead to quality work. This is an awesome technique here , I’m definable going to try it , those skins suck man , when I opened the box and tried tatting one , I could here the needle penetrating and slam off the wood coffee table , I have 2 coil guns , I have heard rotary guns have a lot of play in them , what’s your take , I’m not above getting a rotary machine as well , I wanna do this right

    How about practice on the leather car washing skins they sale at auto parts store for rinceing off water after a car wash?

      I know the skins need to be wet. That is the only thing I can think could be a problem.

    • @TattooUniversity

      The ink stays in if you do it correctly. Works better than most practice skins.

    What do you think about Pig Skin to praktice? I used in the very beginning and i think it is the most realistic stuff (if it's very fresh and warm). What do you, as an professional Artist, think ?

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Practice skins are okay for learning how to set up your machines and station. You can try new techniques on them, but they will never be the same as real skin. Pig skin isn't the same because the big is already dead. The skin will never heal. When you tattoo you want to see the final product. Look and see if the tattoo healed correctly. If it is dead or fake you don't get that.

    hi , am having trouble tattooing on fake skin. I need to go over more then 4 times before i get a dark tone , i do all the necessary things like testing the voltage setting the machine, adding vaseline, ect.. i tried on a banana and had the opposite effect. your outline is very dark on fake skin, can this be due to the ink brand your using or a needle type? thanks.

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fake skin and bananas give you a false sense of how to tattoo. Real skin doesn't act this way. Bananas take the ink like you are writing with a pen. It isn't hard to tattoo a banana. Rubber is harder than skin and you can beat it up a lot without it bleeding or punching you for hurting it. I would say it is a problem with your ink flow and the depth of your needle. Both have to be set correctly for the ink to go when it needs to.

      I used to be in the Army. I know how those drill sergeants are. The tougher the drill sergeant the more you loved them. It is weird how that works. The Army really knows the importance of practice. Although I'm a civilian now I still have some of that military training stuck in my head.

    I tried to but on my band the ink remains grey. What brand is yours ?

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could try and find a flesh colored or grey band but it really is an exercise to teach you how to stretch. The benefit is from the practice using your hands to stretch while you tattoo. I would look at the quality of the line work and if it is solid. Not really worried about the color as much.

      The idea is to have something the shape of a body part. Banana isn't shaped like any body part I want to tattoo. Then have something that stretches like skin so you practice stretching.

    • @TattooUniversity

      Use good stencil solution. Let it sit for 20 minutes before working on it. Only use the ointment where you are tattooing. Don't rub your hands over the stencil.

      You can't stretch it. The idea behind this exercise is to teach yourself to stretch correctly. You can tattoo the reelskin like any other practice skin. It just doesn't have the stretch
