Definitely one of the more interesting radios I've had to work with. It's way easier and less temperamental to work with than the 154s. While these remind me of the old MBTRS, at least these have a screen to show you what you're doing.

A $25 BAOFENG with a $20 antenna upgrade allows me to transmit to a repeater nearly 60 miles away. Same radio on high power, using a $100 handheld beam antenna. Has no problems hitting the ISS repeater when in proper orbit. Thats on 4watts. These radios aren't FM radio stations that are competing against other stations to propagate a signal. The new gen 5 harris and even some much older Motorola models are digital/microwave technologies. They cover entire states on 2 watts.

Harris encryption can only be unencrypted by other Harris radios typically, unless you are a government and have decryption software of military grade. Encryption can always be broken and you can just speak in codes, problem solved

It's depends from many factors and settings.
Not large, 10 - 15 km if both correspondents are on the ground and up to 40 - 50 km if one of them is on a hill, of course, in line of sight.
