  • If you are brave enough to go into a transmission you can save a lot of money and replace the band assembly to get your transmission to start shifting at the correct time again.

    Retired after 34 yrs as a mechanic and I have to say that it is very generous of you to share your knowledge like this and save the general public time and money. I think you’re a person like myself who believes in sharing knowledge with those that deserve it. I still learn every day or else it’s a wasted day imo and never too proud to admit learning as I did in this excellent job description you did here “brothers in grease”,lol.

      Speaking of which, if I can manage to record it and properly, I’m going to do a disassembly of the insides like this up to the input shaft and forward sprag, I already had it all apart but didn’t get the pump shaft aligned correctly, the instructions after torquing the pump was to turn the crank a little while tightening it in, which I didn’t do or realize till it was too late, I’ve had everything that comes out out and even have the valve body out without removing the transmission from the vehicle, the input shaft is the hardest part because you have to push in and tilt to lift the internal part of the torque converter and then quickly roll the shaft to get it into the splines, takes a few tries and luck to the point that I won’t try again unless there’s evidence I may need to check the bearings for damage due to lack of lube pressure, this was on a rebuild that was botched due to poor parts used even though they were unlikely fit for operation, I had movement prior to the first disassembly and checking pump output has not even a trickle, every normal wear item can be done on these in vehicle except the low/reverse clutch, the chain, hard parts that shouldn’t fail, cleaning the chain shield magnet, and actually replacing the filter, though the filter can be flushed very thoroughly if both the pump and valve body are removed

    Best most imformative step by step video covering disassembly and reassembly. Daughters 2008 Escape had 2-4 band go out at just under 100K miles. $4500 for the rebuild. Pop ahead just over 3 years and 58K more miles, just outside the rebuild warranty and the band broke. Tranny shop said ut needed another rebuild and labor costs had gone up so quoted over 5K for a rebuild. Daughter was stressed as she just bought a house and didnt want a car paymwnt. I watched thjs video 3 times and tackeled the job myself following the great step by step. Band was beomen. Slapped in the new $30 band. Car is now shifting great, saved thenkid $5K and life is good. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this informative video. You are a true professional in your trade!!😊😊

    I've been a mechanic here in Texas for more than 40 years. We haven't had very many Escapes come into the shop over the years and have only replaced 2 escape transmissions that were trashed, not from the experience you were having. A few months back my girlfriend's son's 2008 Escape lost 2nd gear. I searched TH-cam and your video popped right up as I was experiencing the very symptoms listed in the heading of your video. With my shop discount from Ford the band and seal cost me 55 bucks and I had it back on the road in 2 hours. I just wanted to say thank for a very informative video and that after 40 years of turning a wrench I am still able to learn things and be grateful for it. Thank you.

    I just finished this repair. thanks very informative video. I did a couple things different. 1st I only did the front 3 engine mounts RF take all the top bolts out. Worked fine for clearance 2nd I did not take the caliper off all I needed to do was take the upper strut bolt out and loosen the lower one its enough to get the CV joint out but make sure you still disconnect the ABS wire from the strut. 3rd I only disconnected one side (Driver side ) of the cross member that runs right to left under the car you can pry it down enough to take the center beam out it has the be disconnected at the front.

    to everyone about to attempt this repair make sure the pump is seated correctly when you’re reinstalling it, the first time i tried it wasn’t set down properly and the pump ended up breaking and it wouldn’t pump any fluid, got a used one from a pick and pull and reinstalled it and sure enough the car drove beautifully. i’m 17 and i pulled this off on my own. the second time i tried reinstalling the pump what i did was install the hex shaft on the converter side of the tranny, placed the pump in and slowly rotated the pump until i felt it pop in just a bit, and then rotated it back to line up with the bolt holes. worked great wouldn’t have been able to do it without this video so thanks

      I think that's one of the biggest problems with this job is damaging the rod or the pump going back in or not cleaning around case and having pump leaks. It's super important to go slow when tightening the bolts and criss crossing as you go.

    I found it is possible to get that middle gear and clutch assembly back in without pulling the transmission.
    - First check the axial placement of the assembly relative to the cutouts on in inside of the main housing so see if it did move. The face of the assembly should be even with the machined in step.
    -pull the assembly out. Remove the smaller snap ring in the front face, so the inner clutch packs fall free from the outer can. Also pull the outer can apart into two parts.
    - you'll see a series of splined rings and the torque shaft still in the transmission. Pull that out.
    - assemble the clutch pack from inside the can to the spline rings and torque shaft.
    - put that into the transmission. Use the hex pump shaft as a handle inserted into, but not all the way through, the torque shaft as a handle so you can pitch up/down the torque shaft to get it to assemble.
    - from here, start assembling the other part assemblies one by one into the transmission.
    - you can use globs of transgel to hold clutch plates in place so they don't slip down due to gravity after you center and align them.
    - when assembling, it is possible to rotate and move the part you are inserting back and forth to grab the different clutch plates in the stack. Just count how many you need to feel before it is seated.
    - and eventually, you are done. All set.
    - keep aware that most of the parts that have multiple spline sets or spline sets and castellations on them need to be clocked to the parts already in the transmission. This is not hard to do, just look for where spline son the different sets align nicely and use that as your reference point.
    -it took me about 2-3 hours, including the time spent figuring out what to do at each step and if it was possible or not. So still a lot less than pulling the whole transmission.

    @Hoopties Garage and @Avril Burrel Proud of you! In my professional career I often hired women because I knew damn well that there is literally nothing a guy can do that a gal educated in the same expertise couldn't also! And 9 times out of ten, women were more dependable employes even with the additional responsibilities of being a mother. When I was long term employed 2000 miles from home, my amazing wife called to tell me our hot water heater failed. I ordered a new one, and since our home is fairly remote in NM, when it arrived and with me on the phone to answer questions, SHE took out the bad water heater, then fully installed the new one entirely by herself; plumbing, water lines, gas line, and electrical! You remind me of her! Good on you. Guess I should do this repair myself. Thank you @Hoopties Garage for the great instructional video!!, and thank you @Avril Burrel for your inspiration.

    @20:46.
    Unfortunately, the assembly can slide out with very little effort, usually as a result of binding with the pump spindle during removal - hence the importance of prying the transmission down to fully clear the body structure.
    I was lucky & able to reinstall the assembly by holding the speed sensor tabs with two small vice-grips, and rotating the inner & outer carriers until all the clutch plates found their seat. It took a dozen attempts, but it will work. Using a couple of dabs of ATF-friendly assembly grease to 'hold' the two clutch packs in place makes it a bit easier.
    This is an excellent video & I would recommend following this gentleman's advice to the letter.

    i don't know if the Mazda Tribute mounts are that much different but I only took out the two front bolts that hold the support going front to back and one bolt going straight down in an engine mount. The engine dropped far enough to get the pump out. If your pump is that rusty it will start seeping fluid soon. they are not expensive at Transtar. I paid only $32 for the new 2/4 band.

      If you do this job yourself make sure to clean around the housing really really good where the pump goes back in, if there's any rust or debris it will rip or knick the new seal and you will have leaks, also lubricate that seal really good. Other than that it's a pretty straight forward job.

      I have 2008 escape. Put a new tranny pump on. Had a guy do this. Not a shop.the new pump wasnt primed and twisted and snapped the rod . replaced the rod and primed the pump on 2nd install. Now the car will not move in any gear. If the car is raised the wheels turn by hand but when on the ground it will not even push while in neutral. The original pump was cracked from rust and leaking but the tranny shifted perfectly. Now any gear is like in park.

    • @HooptiesGarage
      @HooptiesGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danholland7989 that pump had nothing to do with being primed when he installed the pump he didn't install it straight down and if you torque the bolts unevenly it will break that rod. When it breaks that rod it also kills the pumps usually. You need a new pump and rod and someone to install correctly. like I said in my video I used two studs to allow pump to go on straight. It's not a real hard job but you def have to take your time installing pump down even or you will run into the problems you are experiencing.

    • @HooptiesGarage
      @HooptiesGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danholland7989 the reason your transmission will not go now is because when it snapped that rod it also probably destroyed your oil pump. Great informational video on what might be the issue with my 2008 Ford escape. I think my band is broken cause it is having an issue shifting from first to second. I believe the band broke when shifting into 4th gear going about 60MPH the engine just rev'd with no acceleration. so I put the can in neutral and coasted the the stop light. I was able to get home in first gear going about 20MPH. I recently just replace the shifter cable because the end that attaches the the shifter broke but I was able to manually push and pull the cable to put it into gear. I have it adjusted properly because it has been fine for about a week with no issues. I dont think I want to take this on myself but what is the average cost of the band? More than likely it didn't seat properly, you have to really bolt that pump down slowly and alternate the sequence quite a bit to avoid that ,sometimes you can actually hear that rod seat itself. Make sure it's seated good in the torque converter and when you are tightening the pump back in go slow and alternate the bolts and try to bolt it down as evenly as possible.

      My guess is the rod that goes from torque converter to the oil pump was broken or not seated properly when you put the pump back in, if that rod is broke the trans will not engage.

    A friend of mines car does this, holds first until about 3,800 then shifts. A little wrench icon also come on on the bottom left of the cluster and it would go out and stay out if you turned off the car and started it again until driven, it was not throwing any codes and just started to do it. Trans wasn’t slipping just shifts real late, would that be the band issue you did in this video?

    Awesome video! I have a 2008 Ford Escape XLT 4 cylinder 150k. I am not a mechanic just brave. Not sure if I have the same problem as you but my transmission delays and i can hear a thump sound and a slight pulled when it shifts up and down. it shifts on regular normal rpm intervals. Some people say it needs an oil replacement but the oil is fine. You think my problem is something else or do i have the same situation as you?

    I tried this on my 2008 Escape. You have to make SURE that you get that pump shaft seated right. On start up I heard a sound and knew right away that I had likely broken the shaft. Sure enough the car wouldn't move. I was 99% sure the stack didn't move when I took the pump out. I followed all directions, slowly tightening the bolts criss cross. But I guess it still wasn't seated properly. Not sure now if I will attempt again and replace the shaft or just buy a used transmission. This is a big job for a diy but doable, but I'm really disappointed that it didn't work out for me.

    • @HooptiesGarage
      @HooptiesGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually you can get the shaft out if you decide to go back in. You can kind of feel the pump and shaft kind of pop together when you are slowly tightening it down. I broke one once and was able to fix it by pulling it back apart. I went to junkyard and got new shaft.

      @@rpenner999 Hey bud I actually did the same exact thing you did. I followed this video and did it all perfectly and assumed the shaft rod was seated. I had no idea about turning the crank when I was done with the job. I went to start it up and it made an awful noise and wouldn't move! I was so pissed off. I called a transmission shop and the guy was nice enough to listen and help me. He told me that when your done you have to turn the crankshaft which is accessible on the front passenger side (remove the tire and plastic housing and it's right there, just use a socket I believe it was a 19mm or so and slowly turn the crank a few times and it will seat correctly). It sucks to have to do it all over again as it is a big job. It didn't just bend my rod either it actually screwed up my pump as well which I ended up having to get rebuilt. It was a damn mess but the second time was a charm and it's working great now. For anyone that does this job I hope they see to turn the crank when they are done as it could save them a lot of time and money.
