Right? I think I was around 7 when I first played this game and it took me like the entire summer vacation to finish it on easy because I was obviously bad at games as a 7 year old. I also would be too scared to move forward sometimes and would quit out all the time mid fight. 23 min would just seem absolutely impossible to 7 year old me. Even as an adult I'm probably gonna need at least a couple days unless I just sit there and play straight through without sleep. This is coming from someone who has played through the game fully at least a dozen times and partially quite a few times.
It took me 4 months to beat Half-Life the first time. This was primarily because of two factors: 1) The minimum RAM was 64MB for the DOS version, and I only had 48MB, which lead to incredible lag especially when loading a save (took over 45 seconds to quick load!). 2) I kept repeating scenes that were fun, especially big chaotic fights with soldiers and aliens -- I loved how the fights were different every time!
34:40 that infinite health door also works with NPCs. I recall seeing bloopers of a Half-Life speedrun before where that HECU grunt got stuck on the door instead of the player, and their health went insanely high and basically unkillable that the speedrunner had to end the run lol
That is why the door works that way. The guard you are supposed to get to the door to open it can get stuck on it, and in early development often ended up getting stuck and dying to it. And since that guard is the only entity that can open that door, that particular guard dying prompts game over. So even if the door was opened by him, if the guard then got stuck and died, the game ended. Instead of the developers figuring out whats wrong with the door collision, they just made the door heal you if you get stuck on it instead of hurting you.

i'd basically given up on speedrunning videos on youtube, but i clicked this one as i've been re-playing half-life. you've really mastered this style of hyper-annotated and factual, yet casual like a sportscast... it's breathed new life into the genre of speedrunning content for me. this is my first time seeing your channel, and i'm only a third into this video, but this is some quality content. really refreshing. many other channels simply commentate on the run, which is technically correct, but you add a good sense of humor to it - great writing and delivery - you could probably make it as a comic. densely packed with information, but taking the necessary time to slow certain elements without (frequent) pauses to keep the pace of the run. it's a step above what i've been seeing from other youtubers who cover this topic, so i'll subscribe and check your back catalog!
the lore behind all these speedruns he covers is the main character just had something spicy, and found out the only toilet in the entire universe is guarded by the final boss
I really wanna see Tomato upload a joke video titled "How speedrunners beat [Insert game here] in [Insert time here]", and it's literally just a 10 second video explaining how they took a pre-existing speedrun and sped it up by about a couple times.
@tomatoanus I always appreciate the "Hope you're feeling well but if not don't sweat it" speech in each video, to paraphrase. Thank you and keep it up.
@@CoralCopperHead I'm sorry you feel that way, however if you do, I'd venture that the message isn't meant for you, and that's great! IMO the message is there for people to view it and draw from it what they need in the moment - everything's solid: "weird, sappy message huh? Dunno what that's all about - back to the run!" but if you're in a tough place and/or time, it can be a nice little bit of positivity that feels more genuine than many others I've heard or seen on TH-cam. YMMV, have a great day.
@@CoralCopperHead I think you're placing too much emphasis on the source and not enough on the recipient. While you may hear platitudes and bad advice, consider that others may hear and interpret a genuine sense of positivity and recognition of their problems by someone else, which can go a long way just by itself. If you or someone sees it as platitudes and bad advice (which it may be, I'm not a mental health professional) then view it as such and continue. As someone who's dealt with chronic, treatment-resistant depression my entire adult life of almost two decades, I find it to be a nice bit of positivity and a small highlight of each video. I also view it in the context of the small amount of time and effort it takes him, which is more than many other creators I watch, being well worth it if even a handful of people hear it and can be put at ease or in a better mood, if even only slightly. The small number (I would imagine) of people who would actually find it malicious or damaging is likely well outweighed by those that appreciate and enjoy it. It's just a few seconds of time and some words, take from it and interpret it how you will, but just realize that your takeaway is not necessarily that of the next person; while you find a platitude others may find empathy. True or not, if it makes them feel better, what's really the harm? Listen again carefully next time, if you care to - I would not ascribe the message to be "stop feeling bad" but rather carefully worded to say to the effect of "This isn't permanent and things will get better, so don't get bogged down wallowing in it, and don't define yourself by it". That's more nuanced and less reductive than "stop feeling bad" IMO.
hey man i've been going thru one of the toughest times in my life thus far and what you had to say around the 7:30 mark was very impactful and relevant. thank you so much for reminding me that everything is gonna be ok :)
@@CoralCopperHead being cynical certainly doesn’t help at least. 🤦 if it is helpful to hear for some people then it is helpful regardless of what you think
I remember when the half-hour half-life scripted segmented run was new and was an incredible milestone that could barely be believed... and now that time is beaten by several minutes in a single segment scriptless - it's amazing what these people have found to trim time off this run
This is a segmented run. Says so in the intro and there is a super obvious load in the trash compactor. And while the category is called "script less", it uses precise FPS values, which you won't get through normal gameplay, so some sort of script has been used (even if it's just some "bind" command)
@@fonesrphunny7242 the load in trash compactor wasn't one of the segments lol. all of apprehension if not more was a segment. binds arent scripts. you can bind "fps_max 20" just like +duck or +attack or any other regular action whereas a script is multiple actions with alias commands and wait commands in your autoexec outside of the game entirely.
absolutely amazing. half life was one of my introductions into pc gaming, along with Diablo, WC2, Starcraft, and Everquest... seeing it still going strong after all these years is so lovely. amazing script and execution on this video from both of you. well done!

This is my favorite speedrun of all time, and one I've enjoyed watching for many years! Thank you for doing it justice with such clear and apt explanations of the techs we use. Because the run is so heavily centered around maintaining high velocity, it's easy for the small details to be lost on casual viewers - things just happen too quickly. This is the first time I've watched one of your videos and known exactly what was coming up every single time, it was a neat experience :)
I’ve been facing a lot of hell lately and damn as soon as his usual mental health speech started I felt chills in my arms. I really needed to hear it. Thanks tomato

"Half life in 20:41" was one of the most impressive speedrun video i ever seen. it's a segmented speedrun by a couple of OG runners, absolutely wild to watch and pretty much frame perfect every frame
True segmented runs are always insane. This one is segmented but a recreation of the same strats actually used int he WR run. But segmented runs where people just do insane stuff 1000 times until it works really makes for some incredible gameplay. Halo CE's segmented run is pretty out there too, but is also probably nigh impossible for humans to do for a very long time.

@@thomasbursting4951pretty sure they need to have half life on steam too, they just have to tweak some files from won.
dude, i love the reminders and tips off to the side, i was like "why didnt he just go through the headcrab?" then boom, explanation. awsome work man!
I’d _love_ to see the Half-Life developers react to this in depth explanation. Fantastic video as always tomatoanus
They have reacted to Half-Life 2 runs. For some tricks they could come up with explanations and for other things it's funny to see them have no fucking clue what's going on.
@@queuedjar4578 yeah I’ve seen those videos. I loved watching them be fascinated by glitches in their own game. I’d love to see the same with HL1
love when they're like "there goes two years" when watching a guy blow through a level that took them two years to complete.
I still love the mental health talk in every video, it genuinely helps me to hear it, because every time I'm surprised anew
you know its a packed run when No feeling is final is in the first 10 minutes, always appreciated though Mr Anus
How could you not know he wasn’t going to get over 1000 speed, that room is impossible to get 1000 speed you small brained imbecile, there’s too much floor collision for any human to get to a 1000 speed in that room you dumb idiot ❤❤
at 34:17 the sentence "gauss boosting a second time while in air while sharking on some out of bounds water" only made me think of how little some one who never played video games would even understand any part of that sentence!
7:40 im going through a really tough time right now, ive been sick for over nine months and we cant tell what the problem is. im currently going to be alone sick, unable to eat on thanksgiving in my apartment, and have been losing hope. this didnt completely fix my problem but is helping me have hope. thank you

I might be the one getting me through though times but you are definately helping. Thanks for the great content and thoughtful messages!
Thank you for your encouragement at the beginning. I honestly have been really sad and im using this video as a distraction so I can go to sleep.
It was really nice to hear that and it brought a smile to my face, thank you.
I really love the reminders of mental health you give in every video mr tomato, you don't know how many people you've helped

@@CoralCopperHead why do you say they dont?
@@CoralCopperHead I think it's just your negative mind set making you think that. He's just trying to geniuenly help, and it does. But you can only be helped if you really want to, and regardless I do hope you get better
My brain couldn't keep up with this video. Extremely impressive how much you have to master to do this.
Thank you so much for your affirmations. Been having some tough times and its just so nice to hear this. Big love
appreciate the mental health msg without an associated advert, you're a gem
i'd basically given up on speedrunning videos on youtube, but i clicked this one as i've been re-playing half-life. you've really mastered this style of hyper-annotated and factual, yet casual like a sportscast... it's breathed new life into the genre of speedrunning content for me. this is my first time seeing your channel, and i'm only a third into this video, but this is some quality content. really refreshing. many other channels simply commentate on the run, which is technically correct, but you add a good sense of humor to it - great writing and delivery - you could probably make it as a comic. densely packed with information, but taking the necessary time to slow certain elements without (frequent) pauses to keep the pace of the run. it's a step above what i've been seeing from other youtubers who cover this topic, so i'll subscribe and check your back catalog!
That whole speech at 7:11 really hit me. Just today I was having a rough day. Thank you a lot Tomatoanus.
the lore behind all these speedruns he covers is the main character just had something spicy, and found out the only toilet in the entire universe is guarded by the final boss
Possibly my favorite video of yours, both the run and your commentary. Incredible run, the movement is mesmerizing
I really wanna see Tomato upload a joke video titled "How speedrunners beat [Insert game here] in [Insert time here]", and it's literally just a 10 second video explaining how they took a pre-existing speedrun and sped it up by about a couple times.
Why did that help me a bit? I wanted to kms today, but I guess that bit kinda just made me realise smt. Thx bro, I won't forget thag
You said Morgan Freeman so many times that I had to google what his name actually was. Well played.
Great video and run. Haven't seen a Hav Live run in a few years
i love your conquering jak video series mister ricky 🤠
I hadn’t read the channel name after selecting the video and the intro caught me completely off guard.
Holy crap! So much work on this, thanks, this was insane! Such a good choice of a game to run, seeing it played like this was unbelievable.

@@CoralCopperHead being cynical certainly doesn’t help at least. 🤦

@@CoralCopperHead 🤦
Absolutely was NOT ready for the affirmations. Been zoning out from life a bit and hearing all that really got thru to me.
that is one delightful mix of perfect execution and using a crazy amount of knowledge about how the game runs to break it in all the possible ways
I can't believe you put so much effort into this video only to get the main character's name wrong. It's not "Morgan Freeman," it's "Gorgon Greegan."
@@fonesrphunny7242 the load in trash compactor wasn't one of the segments lol. all of apprehension if not more was a segment. binds arent scripts. you can bind "fps_max 20" just like +duck or +attack or any other regular action whereas a script is multiple actions with alias commands and wait commands in your autoexec outside of the game entirely.
absolutely amazing. half life was one of my introductions into pc gaming, along with Diablo, WC2, Starcraft, and Everquest... seeing it still going strong after all these years is so lovely. amazing script and execution on this video from both of you. well done!
Always appreciate the supportive messages you say during wait times.
Trying to watch this run in real time is a trip. You really don't get much rest outta your half hour.

I was not expecting to get an uplifting pep-talk during a speedrun explaination, but here we are. Thank you
honestly your explanation is fucking amazing with these trick reminders and telling us when it happens exactly keep going king
Thanks tomato
thank you for the kind words and affirmations mr. tomatoanus. i’ve been having a particularly rough night and this isn’t the first time i’ve seen your videos or heard your kind words but tonight it really resonated with me. thank you.
The 20 minute run is not only segmented, but also tool assisted.
@@YXalr Tool-Assisted (TAS) is another term in speedrunning, where the game basically plays itself with pre-programmed actions/movements (you can see this in the HL1 Warped speedrun)
The HL21, or HL 2041 run was scripted (not TAS), in the sense that they used bhop scripts, autogauss scripts (that instantly turn you 180° to boost) and other such tricks.
@@worldf1re41 Thank you for the correction.

6:08 I remember trying to do this once in a casual run because I was getting tired of listening to them talk and I accidentally softlocked myself by putting them on the wrong sides so when they tried to go to the opposite scanners they got stuck on each other.

you know its crazy when it takes twice as long to explain the speedrun than the speedrun itself 💀
00:28 🏃 Speedruns of Half-Life begin in the second chapter, skipping the tram ride, using bunnyhopping and strafing techniques to move faster than normal walking speed.
01:25 🎮 "Scriptless" speedruns of Half-Life only allow human inputs, no scripts; techniques like air strafing and bunnyhopping boost speed.
03:30 🎮 Runners use the World Opponent Network (WON) version of the game due to its higher speed cap compared to the Steam version.
04:03 💣 In the speedrun, players aim for Easy difficulty for faster completion due to a skip that was once believed possible only on Hard.
05:28 🕹 Manipulating FPS to open doors earlier, using specific movements and triggers, helps skip dialogue and interactions, saving time.
06:21 🎮 Precision and positioning with NPCs in the test chamber area assist in optimizing speed by manipulating their movements.
08:17 🚀 Advanced techniques like object boosts, jumpbugs, and precise positioning exploit game mechanics to gain speed and skip sections.
10:47 🔫 In-game glitches and precise actions allow skipping sections and manipulating NPCs to save time and avoid hindrances.
12:46 🧨 Precision grenade usage to prevent NPCs from blocking progression and strategic health management are crucial for speed.
13:49 🕹 Advanced movement techniques like edgebugs and duck taps help minimize fall damage and navigate complex environments efficiently.
15:14 🎮 Speedrunning tricks involve exploiting game mechanics, like bypassing rooms and using shortcuts to progress faster.
16:39 🌊 "Sharking" in Half-Life involves using movement techniques in water to maintain velocity and gain speed.
18:05 🚆 Skipping game chapters by creatively maneuvering around intended obstacles is a common speedrunning strategy.
20:53 💥 Mastering bunnyhopping and object boosts in Half-Life helps maintain speed and bypass challenges efficiently.
23:17 🔫 Health and armor management are critical in executing precise maneuvers and glitches for optimal speedruns.
25:39 🕹 Precision and timing are essential for executing advanced tricks like clipping through walls to save time.
28:28 🔄 Manipulating game triggers and using unconventional methods aid in sequence-breaking and speed enhancement.
29:32 💣 Utilizing explosives and speed techniques for clipping through surfaces optimizes traversal and progression.
30:39 🚪 Strategies like saveloading, AI manipulation, and ammo duplication help navigate levels and manage encounters efficiently.
31:39 🏃♂ Speedrunners use a scientist to open a door by leading them across the level, performing armor boosts, and utilizing gauss rifle tricks.
32:38 🚀 Utilizing gauss boosts, remote explosives, and precise movements, speedrunners navigate terrains and avoid enemies efficiently.
34:00 💥 Using various boosts, speedrunners manage health, deal with enemies, and optimize movement through obstacles.
35:27 🌊 Speedrunners employ underwater techniques, 'nade boosts, and weapon strategies to overcome obstacles and enemies.
37:25 🔥 Advanced skips and manipulations allow speedrunners to bypass major sections, saving considerable time in the game.
38:53 🌀 Using FPS manipulation, audio cues, and game glitches, speedrunners optimize boss fights and map transitions.
41:53 🧩 Creative use of explosives, boosts, and skips helps speedrunners leap through challenging segments.
43:23 ⚡ Skillful manipulation of boss mechanics and weapon switching optimizes the final showdown, concluding the speedrun.

Tomato, an idea: For specific parts of some games, it could be very interesting to go over variations. Like cool tech that ended up not being optimal.
Maybe even: Showing what a really efficient segment "played normally" would look like, highlighting how much time save there has been achieved with speedrun techniques shown off.
