Looks like a pretty clean setup, great option for a big performance boost for the ally x or legion Go. Having an egpu has been my best add on toy handhelds. Usb 4 should be plug and play after initial setup, oculink is definitely more particular. You have to power everything down, then plug in oculink cords, then power on egpu, then finally power on device. When you shut down the handheld, you have to unplug the egpu once the handheld is off. If you dont the egpu will overheat on its own (its a pain).

For anyone that wants to go this route only get a 0.5m thunderbolt 4 cable anything over will cause stuttering issues especially on the legion (they loose bandwidth the longer the cable so 0.5m or even smaller). Some legions have a defect causing it to bluescreen even just on an external display. Also the legion has less ram so that can cause issues with stuttering and blue screening in certain games like avatar (because its a 50/50 chance it wont un-allocate the ram thats set aside for the igpu - even if you change it in bios) so best to go with the ally x.
Hi, I saw that you have 12.7GB of RAM, I'll give you a tip, if you select the VRAM size in the BIOS and leave it in AUTO, the RAM is freed up to 15.2GB, I would like the manufacturer to have a mode in the BIOS to deactivate the iGPU when an eGPU is connected so it doesn't consume space in the RAM, but hey, not everything is possible in life, but it's the best thing can do. I also use the Legion Go in desktop mode and I think it's great to have so much space on my desktop. By the way, what a great video, I really liked that setup for external GPU

Giving you a heads up. If you wanna get a slight bump in performance move your display port cable from the dock to the EGPU. Since the GPU has to back feed data into the handheld it looses some of the 40gbs goodness.
@@CyberDopamine did it improve performance and was it more or less stable? Curious because I'm running an egpu setup with a GPD Win 4, and like you, I've been running my hdmi from the dock to the monitor without issues. Been wondering if that's a mistake or not...

Hey bro, are you planning on picking up the newest model coming out in January? It is currently available for pre-order, and it has a larger power supply. So hopefully it can run a 4070ti super.
Hey man, great video. If you connect display port directly from the graphics card to your monitor you should unlock some extra performance! Looks like on your video you rely on the usb hub for the video output so you’re taking up some bandwidth there.😊 Won’t look as clean on your desk though! Keep it up, awesome content!
@ yeah, definitely try it out and see if you get an improvement. Make sure you’re not using the Ally/LeGo screen and just your monitor as well. With your setup you’re sending a huge amount of data through the usb cable over to the graphics card and then having to return data from the card through the usb cable to your device and usb hub which will bottleneck it more.
Surprised to see you use the display running to a dock( bottom usb) instead of the egpu. I did something similar when testing the onexgpu I got for my legion go. I ran egpu to game on the handheld display and in both scenarios it should cut down on bandwidth cause the signal goes back and forth. In your testing it should have ran with display going to the ports on the graphics card. In my testing onexgpu might give a usb c cable that doesn't handle the signal going back and forth. It got really hot and thermal throttled after a bit of handheld gaming. External monitor gaming from the egpu ports and I had no issues. They also give a stupid heavy power brick that's fixed to the plug off the outlet. During my first use thinking it could share a wall outlet and it fell out on its own. Mid game I didnt blue screen though but game crashed and I restarted the pc to recognize it again.
Hello there. If the display output isn’t connected directly to the eGPU but instead goes back to the system, the rendered frame must travel back over the same connection (Thunderbolt/PCIe) to the main computer’s video output, which then sends it to the monitor. This back-and-forth creates an extra loop that can increase latency. Running the display directly from the eGPU instead avoids that return trip and usually reduces lag, as the frames can be sent straight to the monitor. So, it’s not exactly processing the data twice, but the additional round-trip increases the time it takes for the frame to reach the screen, which feels like added latency.
I used the other doc you showed but I do like how clean this one looks. I did find a case to hide all the case and PSU. I'd probably still use the TH3G4P3 dock because it has an extra USB port which is nice

This has gotta be like… $2,000 for this setup. It’s super cool and I love the idea of a handheld console that truly scales up to desktop graphics, but you can accomplish a lot more performance for $2,000. That said, this is incredibly compelling for someone like me 🧐.
Have you went into the Legion bios and switch it to give you more ram and less VRam since you're using that egpu setup? Just wanted to know if that could help even more
compared to TB3 eGPU docks, USB4 eGPU docks doesn't support hotplug but you can disable the gpu first in device manager then unplug the usb cable and it will not bsod
Thx for the video mate. I’m on the same jurney. How to improve the performance of the Ally X while docked. This solution is one way for me aswell. The other is the SGWZONE dock. It is more portable than this one and has a 4060 inside. I think it’s a laptop variant but several parts of the dock is modular. Like the GPU, the GaN power supply and the TB4/usb4 modul. The TB5 modul is under development. So I’m not surr wich one to choose.
Nice video and breakdown. Unfortunately, this would be quite difficult to execute, even with the funding provided, as most of the components, except for the GPU, are not available in my country, Bulgaria, or anywhere in the EU
AOO star dock in your video is out of stock :( can you suggest any substitute? Also planning to get a rtx 4080, how can i check the compatibility? I am from the Philippines with very limited options in our local shops, so i would likely buy online outside my country. It would be a disaster if i get the wrong one😅
Nice video sir. I'm very hesitant on that EGPU built-in power supply may cause heat inside on the extensive games with very high settings. Also the knob seem not secured, I saw ETA prime video and it moved. Looking forward for them to improve this EGPU. BTW, my setup is also 4070 EGPU via oculink. it is around 20% to 30% difference betseen USB4 vs oculink.

Have you went into the Legion bios and switch it to give you more ram and less VRam since you're using that egpu setup? Just wanted to know if that could help even more
So this might be a dumb question. I'm really looking on going this way do you think this could run a 4090? 5:31
new model is 500 watt with max 350 watt for card😊
compared to TB3 eGPU docks, USB4 eGPU docks doesn't support hotplug
but you can disable the gpu first in device manager then unplug the usb cable and it will not bsod
6:33 could you please share a link for the GPU command you used?
Yeah I would like to see what this command is as well.
You manage to get it working? I can't get the GPU to show at all
Should i get a legion and follow this set up?
It would be a disaster if i get the wrong one😅
does this work on any portable consoles?like steam deck and etc
Nice video sir. I'm very hesitant on that EGPU built-in power supply may cause heat inside on the extensive games with very high settings. Also the knob seem not secured, I saw ETA prime video and it moved. Looking forward for them to improve this EGPU. BTW, my setup is also 4070 EGPU via oculink. it is around 20% to 30% difference betseen USB4 vs oculink.
can i get recommendations on other egpus I was about buy this one but have seen too many reviews of people recieving bricked aoostars and couldnt get any response with aoostar support
Can you use an egpu to play on the ally’s internal screen?
Do you think the AOOSTAR AG02
supports the RTX 4090 or my best option is RTX 4070
hey Cyber dopamine, i had a question. i have a legion go and an original stream deck. i find myself never really using my og sd bc of how good the lego is. what do you do with the handhelds you don't really use, or how do you make use of them?
They honestly sit in my drawer. I will use one for my desktop setup because i dont use a Gaming PC and, I also let friends and family borrow them for fun
Do you disable the igpu and re enable when playing handheld or do you just leave it on
I'm doing this! Thank you for the insight brother!
Does this work with Bazzite on a ally X ? I would like to buy one but only if it works on bazzite because windows is such a pain in the ass for me
Can you do a video with alternate egpu docks because the one you posted is sold out 😢
Second this!
I’m all about portability as i’m mainly going to be using my ally x away from home - I think the onexgpu 2 is perfect for me. What’s your opinion on the onexgpu 2?
That thing is freaking awesome. I think you should get one. I've yet to try it out
Is it possible to add external ram to the ally with a adapter like the egpu?
Im trying to exactly the same setup for my asus rog ally x but my question is, what’s the difference between rtx 4070 and rtx 4070 super ? Wich one should i get ?
hey I was wondering if this is possible to be used on phones such as redmagic s9 etc etc
Why do u not run direct from the gpu to monitor?
