When you first lifted the lid on that engine I didn't think it would ever run without a major teardown. It's a tribute to your skills and your patience that it fired up, well done!
I knew that she would run. No complicated sensors to deal with just 'old school ' mechanics which is just my thing. Thanks Steve I will be looking forward to the next installment on this build. 👍👍
I remember spending a horrible few hours replacing that little pipe from the water pump to the head on a Mini, without removing the head. The job was made worse as one of the pipes I was trying to get the little collapsable rubber pipe onto had a slot cut in it to allow it to be screwed into the head. Lots to scratched fingers, bloodied knuckles, grease and swearing later I got the job done.
The BMC A series (especially the early ones) were a struggle to work on without removing the unit.
I admire your patience and tenacity with these old cars. Your photography is first class. Can’t wait for next video.
Thank you for this video. It is wonderful to see an old classic brought back to life! The cars from that era were capable of being worked on by ordinary folks. There were no engine computers!

Great video Steve. Oh that stinking hose. Long time ago but I remember it both on my Sprite and Midget. Couldn't tell if it was on correctly. I served in the Air Force and was stationed in the UK. I bought a 59 Sprite there in 1980 and in 1981 shipped it back to New Jersey and drove it to my next assignment in Colorado. I burned s valve in Iowa, removed the head and hand ground a new valve in a motel parking lot. The hose is night mare. Please keep up the videos and a review of your Miata or a new mx5 RFGT would be greatly appreciated. Manual 6 speed of course. I'd like to see your comparison to the GR86

I really like these simple BMC engines. Once you've taken the head of one the first time it becomes a simple routine when needed. I did think the head bolts were supposed to be torqued at 40 ft lbs. Great video again thank you.
Going to go through a similar journey with a 1972 Datsun 240z, lots of patience and persistence

It is amazing to watch you work the problem. I get bogged down in wanting to restore everything along the way without ever getting the engine to run first. Probably why my cars are in pieces with no end in sight. Fantastic job.
Exactly I feel it is the largest reason for so many stalled projects.
Still so envious of your Sprite barn find! I would be over the moon with excitement if I ever stumbled into that. What's it been, 2 years now? Good job getting this one running again, hopefully you'll put it to auction and I can have a stab at her!

sounds good fluid and filters and some new hoses should be good to go on that front then the rest fuel system brakes tires lights I can understand motivation I've been there your a master at this
At least the access is way better than a front wheel drive installation. An old butter knife and a little grease or swarfega, that's how I was taught - during my apprenticeship - to get the d@#n f*@#@^n bypass hose on.

Did you not have the head magnafluxed and resurfaced?
What gear did you have the transmission in? For the best mechanical advantage you need to be in high gear for the rocking method.
Looks as though it's worth cleaning up. What's the sludge in the sump going to be like after washing all that crud off the cylinder walls?
Interesting if you are trying just to flip it. If you are trying to make it cherry I would never do it that way.
What did you do about stuck rings in the piston ring lands???

Good video.....quick question....does converting the car to 12 volt negative ground negatively impact the value of a car like the Sprite?
I would say not at all. It would be very easy to convert back if you wanted to but changing to negative ground opens up a new world of possible upgrades and improvements.
How do you find these things? I'm in Miami Beach and I can never find anything like this...

Those engines are pretty awful
Powered millions of cars,simple to work on and like most engines as long as you dont overheat them work fine, designed and built for small cars not land yachts .

@@afberglund2764 a series bored out to 1360 cc stage 2 head and a large webber carb, drove a mini with that set up once…..huge grin on my face, very envious it was not mine as it flew, it did however have issue it kept shearing the crank pulley, more nuisance than anything else
