- Can Davin and Jeff get this old Ford V-8 engine to fire up after a 50-year slumber? All evidence points to this car being off the road since 1963 (that's 60 years ago!). And it has been slowly sinking into the dirt in its current resting place since at least the mid-1970s. With a new battery, new spark plugs, fresh fuel, basic hand tools, and some good old-fashioned know-how, can your favorite engine builder and his new sidekick get this tired old 1958 Ford Country Sedan station wagon to start? Will it run??

Wagon REALLY needs to be a Hagerty shop project
It wants to live, and it wouldn’t be right to not help it to get back on the road. Hopefully this won’t be the last time we see this old wagon in a Hagerty video.

At this point since they did get it running and since they did showcase their ability to get a long dead vehicle running even though they never drove it or even moved it from it's grave, they actually NEED to do this for more reasons than can be listed. If these guys DON'T get it so it can be returned to the roads, then they are not showing that a car such as this one can ever be returned to the road and that would be a serious letdown to their viewers. And to let down the viewers would be a dumber than dirt decision on their part

i had a 59 country squire when i was 15. 332.2bbl. what a broad slide on those ole country gravel roads. but hey. a country squire.
Why is it everyone forgets how a carb works. Get a little chain saw gas for some upper cylinder lube, fill the float bowl thru the bowl vent, close the choke so it will have a rich mixture and be on high idle, squirt some down the bores and turn her over. Should run for 20-30 seconds. Done it many times, always works as long as the engine isn't mechanically trashed..

Growing up, my dad was a car nut, amassed a sizable collection of 300+ cars, and 80% were in that car's condition. I spent weekend after weekend watching and helping him do exactly what you did right there. I think that's why these are my favorite types of videos, and why still to this day (my father is long gone) I still cars from his collection running again. Thanks guys!

I started using this type of content as way of putting my 5 year old to sleep to which he initially referred to as "boring car videos." The other night I caught him staying up to watch one of Hagerty's time lapse engine rebuild videos to my surprise. He's chip off the old block. Thanks for the help steering him in the right direction. We love the content!

You can't kill those '58 Fords!! I bought a '58 in 1969 for $25.00 and ran it for two years and sold it for $35.00. Good old days!

back in the late 60's a friend had a 58 sedan and his dad had the wagon. great memories
I never looked twice at old wagons, except nomads but in the last 10 years I have seen some real cool wagons. I can't remember ever seeing one like that. You have alot of area to do custom paint and lots of room under the hood to put any motor you want. I can't believe I'm saying this but that's a pretty neat car.

So cool. My Dad had almost the exact car when we lived in Minneapolis (same colors, hub caps). Traded it in 1963 on a Falcon wagon when I was eight. Remember we would go camping and used a roof tent. Had some movies of us climbing ladder to get in. I still remember the white plastic knobs on controls when I would sit in driver's seat and pretend I was driving. Love this video
I was born in the front seat of a ’63 Falcon wagon. My parents made it as far as the hospital parking lot. My dad delivered me. He cut my cord with his pocket knife and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, lol.

I was celebrating and smiling as if I was there. With a little effort, I could've even smelled the fuel, old grease, old car interior humidity. Great job, guys.
Sometimes the trick with old Fords is to hold the gearshift all the up, because even in park it wont always start because of the safety lock out
The 50s Fords with automatics do not start in Park. Only in Neutral. I have no idea why they did that. For the 55 - 57 TBirds, the dealers sell an updated neutral safety switch that WILL allow it to start in park, like the later cars do.

I'd really like to keep seeing more of this. It gives me motivation to try to keep my stuff running.
I find keeping cars running not very difficult, the hard part is to keep THE BODY from turning into Swiss Cheese after about 12yrs. I live in North Central Wisconsin, where the "road crews" don't spare road salt during Winter. The only vehicles that last up here are of the "sunny day only" variety. The "under body flush" at your local car wash can only help so much!

it is my humble opinion but after watching couple of other people videos about vintage cars mechanics, i think yours is most informative and very easy to watch not just for awe but also for context. I really liked it as I could actually learn something from lead actor/mechanic, I hope I wasn't only one who noticed/appreciated that and Hagerty will incorporate more of that type of video contents. I understand that its views that you are after so I hope my thumbs up and this post will be noted. All the best Hagerty team. Great content and looking forwards for more content like that.
the suspense throughout the whole video made it so much better
My 8 year old was yelling at you to put your foot on the break. His big sister took him Christmas shopping a month or so ago. When they came out to leave. His sister couldn't get the car started because she didn't release the safety feature by breaking. When their dad came to rescue, of course, It started right up. He was having a lot of fun at his sisters expense till she reminded him she may or may not give him a lift. Its fun to watch the two sides of his brain fight out teasing his sister vs. transportation.
We can't believe you got it running! My boys have the biggest man crush on you guys. They have an old 78 ski-do snowmobile torn apart in the garage. I bought them the manual on it for Christmas. I play your videos to motivate them out there. I'm hoping they get it running by Feb so they can run it this winter. Your enthusiasm infects them. Can't ain't an option. Figure it out. And make sure the fire extinguisher is handy! Thanks to you for your motivational skills.

My Dad had an identical '58 Ford Wagon, when I got out of the Army in 1962. I had not driven a civilian car for a couple of years, needless to say I was thrilled to drive this car to town. I pulled up next to another '58 Ford wagon. When the light turned green, the race was on, but it didn't last long! Dad's car had the 352 Police Interceptor Special 300HP FE engine , which was no match for the guy next to me. Needless to say how surprised I was at how fast that car was!
Those old FE engines were pretty dependable and started pretty easy.

You mean they weren't, (Fix....Or....Replace....Daily) ?
@@spaceghost8995 They still had the 292 available in '58, but this was the 1st year for the FE352 and that's what is in this wagon.
Between this and the recent videos from Fab Rats & Merlin's Old School Garage with getting the engine in a boat that was sunk under Lake Powell for 30 years working again, I'm dang impressed by how solid some of these engines are! Obviously it's not always the case but the fact that with not much work, Davin and Jeff were able to get this one running, and the same with the boat engine that Merlin fixed up, that's some seriously well-built engines!
What about vise grip garage?
@@revee1000 Never watched one of their videos, so I can't say anything about them. But neither this "restoration", nor, from thumbnails, Vice Grip Garage can hold a candle to the craziness of getting that boat engine working again, IN the original boat too.
Regardless, my comment was NOT about promoting X or Y channel, it was about how well-built the motors themselves were.

Love to see any old engine come to life, but those old FE V-8s were what I spent more time with, it seems, due to me owning so many older Ford pickups.
The engine is either a 332cui, or a 352 cui engine, the only V-8 engines offered in 1958 on the wagons other than the 223 cui inline 6.
Not easy to identify a 332 or 352 unless you have the displacement sticker still on the air cleaner.
Many of the blocks had 352 cast into the front left side of the block, right below the head, next to the water pump, even though the engine was a 390cui.
Brings me way back to when guys could pop the hood, actually see the engine and have enough room to work.
Now I know how Dr. Frankenstein felt when he said. "It's alive!"

Oh man guys!! I used to have a 58 Ford when I was a teenager. First car I learned how to drive a stick shift. She was a 6-popper, 3 spd column shift. They sure don’t build them like the use to! Great video guys, good memories (yeah I’m 72). Still have a 57 Ford retractable I’m TRYING to restore, did an engine swap to a 360 FE with C-6 trans. Whew, what a job but thank you, you did great.

Years ago, I was in Guadalajara for my employer and saw a '58 Ford in the parking lot. As I approached it, I noticed it was a convertible - with 4 doors! They did their own version of a chop. No top, just wide open. 😅
If there's no top for it then technically it wasn't a convertible but a car with no roof. I'm trying to picture it in my head.

That’s great I love this type of video. I watch guys getting big trucks and heavy equipment running like this a lot and always enjoy the process.
One thing that constantly amazes me: The quality of American starters. Sits for 50 years, turns right over; seen it a hundred times. I saw a video a few years ago where a guy was trying to start a 1928 Franklin after 71 years off the road, and he beat that starter up for what seemed like hours and it never died. People commented more on the starter abuse than the car.
Gentlemen that was so cool to watch you work on that 58 Ford wagon. And to not only get it to turn over but then to get it to idle . Was Awesome ! I hope to see you have that car in your garage and to see it get restored . That would be so Amazing. Thanks for sharing this with us . Bob S .

Growing up in America I always thought cars from other countries were unique because I hadn't seen them. Eventually enough time and I realize the rest of the world kinda all built the same lil econoboxes back in time and to think of how many car companies America used to have creating giant luxurious land barges

I'm a 1958 model, and I still run. I think that's just a part of the great American automotive heritage of the time! They'll never make 'em that well again (I believe!) Thanks for this video guys! I remember wagons like this one really well, and I loved the classy old station wagons very early on! I have three siblings and that's how the Pastor (my dad, now 94) kept track of us four! Great memories!
I know you're the kind of guys who can almost always bring old engines like this back to life, but let's be honest, this says also a lot about the quality of these types of Ford engines. 5 decades of being inactive and outside in nature and within a few hours you have a running engine. Pretty awesome.

Oh, MAN, that looked like fun! I used to do that with farm tractors. Well, not just quite. I'd winch them onto the trailer dead and haul them home, because if I got them running in the yard I bought it the price would double or triple on the spot even if I'd already paid them. Yeah, I live in a kind of a rough place.

Kind of surprised you were using what looked like straight gas in the squeeze bottle. Running some 2-cycle mix really seems to help preventing the cylinders from getting washed down during those long cranks.
Yep, that, and if the plan was driving it if it ran, I wouldna run the engine, or even turned it over for more than 10 seconds Tops without at least a cheap oil and filter change, and some clean water ... a sudden "whap-whap-Whap(!)-BOOM(!!)" woulda been one of those unnecessary "Well, Damn, we shouldna tried that," moments. Still, excellent car find, and nice video too. I always thought that '58 Fairlanes (wagons too) were nice-looking cars.

Neato! 58 was the first year for the FE engine, and the smallest was the 332 CID, which this looks to be. The 352 was also offered in 58 but had a 4 barrel, IF I remember right. Great engines. Coincidently, my 59 Country Sedan was the same color combination and same engine.
This was awesome to watch. But man did it bother me with the tree still on the windshield lol. Hopefully you guys will get this back on the road. I love wagons!!!

Amazing after 50 years that engine would start up. Tells you someone maintained that engine properly. My Cougar is 28 years old and that engine still runs like new. Maintenance is the key word. Great job guys. Hagerty that station wagon. Get it back to its glory. Can't wait to see more videos on this wagon.

I've always enjoyed Davin's work and his great personality. And I now like Jeff too, I can tell he's smart and he has a wonderful demeanor. These guys work very well together, and a series with Davin and Jeff would be welcomed by me.
Notable, other than the backfire, I loved Davin's supportive patting on the engine, commenting "No stage fright now."
There's some history here with the '58 Ford that some might be surprised to learn. The engine is a 352/FE series and Fords first use of this was in 1958. The first owner of this car had the delight, or perhaps concern, of having a newly released engine. Of course, we know that the 352 turned out to be a great engine and went on to power Fords throughout the 1960s. And as I recall, it continued on powering trucks into the '70s. We can't forget about the other FE series variants, one of these being the popular 390, so loved by many. Thanks, Hagerty!
