    A review of Gundam SD Battle Alliance, the one I wish I had before I purchased the game. I'm a huge fan of Gundam, so I know a lot of you out there are trying to see if Bandai Namco's newest entry is worth it. Well, now that you've found my The Problem Series, then look no further!

    the reason alot of the story seems lacking isn't because the story is badly done or barely there, no actually if you go to the library and go under cutscene replays and briefings, they hide alot of the loredump stuff regarding both the game's plot, and the anime plots, in there, I guess to not overload people with cutscenes that want to jump to the action. in other words in this game the library is a clutch, since you can replay any story related cutscenes at any time and even try different dialogue choices. also the final boss is the most satisfying of any gundam game in my opinion. this game's story and final boss and ending is a love letter to gundam fans, especially universal century ones. just make sure to check the library often for loredumps. this game loves g gundam as well you will be happy to know g gundam fans.

    The problem for me is that there's no actual pause, not even in singleplayer. You stop but every still goes on in the background. Unless there is an actual pause in the game that's my problem

    • @Old_Man_Rivers
      @Old_Man_Rivers ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The lack of pause in solo is quite frustrating, especially when there is a timer and some missions take 20 minutes out of 30 to complete if you are efficient.
      Dark Souls not having a pause button is fine because things don't respawn and there's no ticking clock. They should have implemented it in solo. I have a feeling though that there was a bug that they could not fix, so they just had to remove the pause feature.

    As for the lack of English dub, I mainly think they decided to do this simply because it saves money from having to hire VAs. With my experience of Gundam games and series, I do get a strong toned down Dynasty Warrior Gundam vibes from this game with a bit of Gundam Breaker 2 for the boss fights. Could see a problem with lack of certain MS, especially in a game that covers many varying universes. Although still playing GBO2 and goes back and forth out of Breaker 3, this could be a nice change of pace later on to play.
    As for depressing Gundam series, yes IBO is quite sad but that is only the tip of the iceberg. Wait till you see the really hard hitting stuff from UC or any other Gundam Universe where several named characters die.

    The lingering lock-on is there so that you can maintain a combo even after an enemy dies- or else it'd more or less make you drop combos all the time. It takes a bit to get used to, but if you really need to swap to another target, you move the right stick to swap targets, then you can just do a melee to dash to them. It takes a little getting used to but as I've already racked up 40+ hours on this game, its not taken too long to get the hang of things.
    Also about bosses not flinching, I think its important to note that only beam damage does much against boss balance gauges. Its why its really useful to bring a sharpshooter with you if you're an infighter, or play an infighter that does beam damage if you only bring two allies that do physical.

    In my eyes this game is the SD gundam game I've always wanted. I'm not to big on the traditional grid based tactical games and always wanted to see the SD look of the gundam translated in an action game setting. Based on what I've seen it succeeds in that front. Also the game reminds me a lot of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, which is one of my favorite games on the switch due to the amount of characters the game has, fun combat, surprisingly detail to the animations, etc, which are all aspects I see in SD gundam battle alliance. I understand Bamco saying "nope" to English Dubbing for this experimental game. Maybe next time when the English consumers have become more established. Gundam games used to have English dubbing but after the first 3 DWG games back on the PS3 they stopped and every Gundam for the most part has ONLY the Japanese dubbing. It's likely because getting the original cast back for hundreds of characters costs to much. Yes Gundam makes money in Japan but its track record outside of Japan varies wildly. For every good Gundam game there's four bad ones. The animes can be very polarizing with UC and AU fans constantly debating about what's good and bad. Some of the animes legitimately don't do well. also blue prints drop from bosses 100% of time just depends on the loot table , each mission says if it drops blueprints

  • @Old_Man_Rivers
    @Old_Man_Rivers ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Look, the Japanese-only problem is pretty difficult to justify, though there are many games out there without an English dub. The language problem mostly stems from the dialogue dumps halfway through the action like you stated.
    Price tag is hard to defend as well. It should have been a $40 game because of its shorter runtime for normal mode and the lack of localization beyond subtitles.
    However, your understanding of the plot shows how little you actually went through the story. There is much more to the story than "Xenoverse, but Gundam," and it is quite interesting.
    Your understanding of the "grindfest" is only partially accurate. Though it is best to stick with a mobile suit for the first few directories, once you get to directory 4 (halfway), you start getting enough capital to fully level mobile suits up to Level 15 without breaking a sweat. Also, multiple mobile suits have multiple ways to obtain blueprints. Your example of the GM Sniper II shows that you didn't realize that you can get the 2nd blueprint on a later mission as a guaranteed reward. For the more intricate/iconic mobile suits, yes, you have to play the mission multiple times; however, by that point in time you will be playing the same mission anyway to get capital for a mobile suit that you are leveling that you want to use as your main. I've played 60 hours of this game, and hard mode (essentially ng+) is the only time when you need to *actually* grind.

    My biggest complaints are when you lock on an enemy, your shots tend to not be accurate while enemy bosses tend to have 100% accuracy on you. And when you break some bosses, after some get into the animation to get up, they just boost off somewhere else to make all your shots on them miss when they should've still been flinched.

    I definitely wish they did some more interesting story missions. The concept is cool, but just needs that little extra push to be incredible.
    I also hope they rebalance the difficulty around single player in the future. The lack of enemy hitstun and Mobile Armors lacking a visible stun gauge is infuriating and makes playing any of the Infighter style suits a huge pain. Master Gundam for example, has 2 grab sub weapons, but they cant be used on a huge chunk of bosses. It seems built purely around the multiplayer which makes some missions an absolute drag. The grind can also be unbearable. Some sort of Gauntlet or Survival mode where you just cut through waves of enemies would be a great way to earn exp resources.

Did not steal from dragon ball xenoverse - it's just basically bandai's generic story. As always and ever since, you don't play these games for the story.

    As far as Gundam games go if you want an experience of games that cover entire series stories I would suggest the two games SD Gundam G Generation/ Crossrays.
    They pretty much tell the meat of the respective series just Generation is all the "Univeral Century" that focuses of the story from the first Gundam on.
    "Crossrays" is about all of Wing, Seed, 00 and Iron Blooded Orphans. They even have story modes about manga only spinoff so for Ironblooded Orphans they have a story campaign of the side manga since you've said you already watched the main series.

    0:57 you should check out gundam extreme vs, not to be confused with gundam versus. its basically the best arena fighter there is, after that gundam breaker 3 is also a very good gundam game, for strategy, if you can read japanese there's the older sd g gen games, if you dont care about graphics, the ds(the first one, NOT cross drive), is amazing, and its probably the best take on a multi gundam shared universe, with events taking advantage of running similar battles involving diferent groups(for example, in one fight, you have to face the titans from zeta AND the federation from seed).
    another great choice with strategy are the giren's ambition, a gundam take on the nobunaga's ambition games, and just like g gen ds, it is not afraid of going places, with strategies going beyond simply field battle, but also unit alocation on the war itself(a good example is sending ramba the doms he was promissed, or picking the gyan as zeon's main unit instead of the gelgoog).
    there are many amazing gundam games, its just that the last batch has been lack luster. cross rays and alliance are probably still good enough, but nowhere near as good as the others. evolution seems to be the only one that actually had some money behind it, unfortunately.

  • @SpexSpexington
    @SpexSpexington ปีที่แล้ว

    I've only played a little bit of the game so far and while I'm not impressed with it, I'm also not unimpressed. I'm a huge 20+ year-long Universal Century Gundam fan, with a soft spot for Gundam Wing, since it got me hooked on the genre way back in early 2000-something. You definitely need to be a fan of the series to appreciate the story, though, I know I'm going to have issues with it once I hit Seed, 00, etc stuff.
    The auto lock on can be disabled in settings, but I don't know how much it'll improve the gameplay. If anything at all. But otherwise, the camera is definitely annoying. I had the exact same frustration when fighting Epon in that second stage. I couldn't beat the level on Normal because of it (and maybe because my MS was underpowered?). The stupid buildings were just in the way. At one point, I thought it was a part of the level design. Maybe I was supposed to destroy the buildings... but it proved too hard to do and I ended up just getting destroyed.
    Default controls aren't great either. The boost and dodge buttons require you to remove your right thumb from the camera stick, so boosting around while moving the camera is nearly impossible without two right thumbs. I'm playing on the Switch, so I changed the layout as follows: ZL= Boost, L = Sub Weapon 1, ZR= shoot, R=Sub Weapon 2, Y= Melee, X= Stronger Melee, A= Guard, B= Jump.
    It works for me so far, but Guarding is a bit tricky at times. I might swap the A and B actions or something, in order to move the guard button closer to the R stick.
    The SD chibi Gundam form factor is kinda annoying for me, but having played the recent turn-based G Generation strategy games on the Switch, it's almost normal for that particular console. In my mind, the Switch isn't powerful enough to handle regular, full-sized and well-detailed models like Gundam Battle Operations 2. BUT... there were gundam games back on the PSP that used full-sized models, but not GBO2 level of details. There was a game I imported, but I cannot remember its name right now. It was basically a more modern version of the Federation vs Zeon or Gundam vs Z Gundam games from the PS2. It had up to Gundam Unicorn on it. If the PSP could handle that, I'm sure the Switch could too... with a bit more detail.
    Overall, the game is just an SD Gundam game aimed at the fans and trying something new for them. Does it work? Maybe? But it isn't groundbreaking or anything. I'm still wanting a Gundam Battle Operations 2 game that's a single player, mission-based game that plays through the Universal Century, has all the various mobile suit variants like GBO2, and plays sort of like Zeonic Front (PS2) minus the frustrating pre-planning that that game had (I played that as a middle schooler or something, so I wasn't great at it). Obviously, this type of game wouldn't be for the Switch though, so I'd be playing that on my PC.

    like most Gundam games after extreme vs. it borrowed many elements to make the combat system more fun, i'm a few hours in and as someone who has hundreds of hours in ex vs. and breaker it's a pretty nice fix it is not as deep as Exvs. Exvs. is an arena brawler with the depth of a fighting game but it's great that it gives you tools to make your create your own depth within the game if you're looking for that same crazyness.
    As for the story. SD Gundam games have always been about mashing the multiverses of the Gundam series together you could say that this game stole from Xenoverse but SD Gundam has been doing this since the beginning when the games were turn based stretagy games. Way before Xenoverse came along.

You can basically get through the entire game solo no problem... until you get to the endgame EX missions which are the only way to level past level 80 and they're all but impossible with AI partners, you basically need multiplayer. It wouldn't be so bad if you could consistently time counters, but with the camera hiding the boss you're locked onto half the time, the inconsistency of attack hit boxes, and the slow responsiveness of the block button it just feels unfair.

    Some of what you said I highly agree with, like the "no English voiceover" and the camera being crap, but for the majority of the negative points you gave, they can be easily fixed in one of two ways: first, go through the options menu, it takes five minutes to check it all out if you're a slow reader; the auto target is changeable in the options menu. And, second, if you played the game past the first couple of missions, you'd know that there is still a lot of the game that opens up in later "Directories," such as Chaos Missions, which would be that "unique twist" you said the game didn't have for the whole branching missions thing. Also, some missions DO have branching paths. Again, if you played past the first couple missions before writing a review of the ENTIRE game, you'd have come across them. What I'm trying to say is that I wish you'd played more of the game and explored the options menu at least once (because you didn't do it even once; the auto lock-on is the very first page of the menu, lol) before you write reviews that say things aren't what they actually are, but only found later in the story. To your defense, though, they explain the multiple paths thing in the middle of a battle... In Japanese... So I can see how you might have missed it, even if it's an early mission you might have played. Also, there's definitely something about foreign languages babbling nonsense into your ear for entire missions that really annoys me. Lol. But you're positive points-and even a few negatives like I said-i highly agree with, so I review this review a 6/10. Sorry if I sounded mean; I didn't mean to make it seem like I hated your video because I don't. I just think you need a little more effort for future game reviews.

      However, even with all these things you mentioned, I don’t think my feelings on the game would’ve changed even if I had played more.
      Also, auto lock on being enabled by default is the silliest thing I’ve ever heard to be honest lol

Most of the stuff before that isn't so good, unless you got knight Gundam in the beginning of the game from preordering. as a guy who sunk 40 hour and breaking fingers (playing on default keyboard controls) a tip to quick blue print grind is to simply get 1 suit you will use to grind upgrade that much as you can and speed run the stage, most stage does not require you to kill all mobs to go to the boss, not to mention bosses are the only one that drop blue prints, another thing there WILL be few stages that will force you to kill mobs to progress. to kill bosses fast just save your ult and your AI partners ult don't ever use it on simple mobs and make sure to check your AI partners ult the reason for this is melee ult has a high chance of missing because your other partner AI can break the stun lock for the boss pushing them away from the hit so a shooting ult is a lot more prefered if you want to maximize the damage done from ult nuking a boss.
    last tip IF your are playing on keyboard and having lock on issue where it switches target stop moving your mouse keep it still and possible, this works best for shooters but I'm not toooo sure how this works out for melee.

    I'm a huge gundam fan. But I'm a wait till this game is on sale. Lack of English dub is a problem for me. GB3 is probably the best gundam game. That and federation vs zeon was dope.

    My biggest issue is that the Infighter Gundams hardly do any damage compared to sharpshooters. I just unlocked Lupus Rex and it’s so underwhelming.

      most sniper units suck. they have too small magazine, deal pitiful damage and are made of paper. you could use the freedom as a sniper, and it would do a better job specially with how you can almost keep shooting non stop due to how many shots it got.

    If you want a good gundam game, get gundam extreme vs maxi boost on. That is literally the best gundam game you can get your hands on excluding all the arcade ones that are only in japan :(

      i would point to sd gundam DS on the ds, its probably the best gundam game story, and while it lacks in MS variety and graphics(it was released VERY early on the ds, and was basically a buffed version of the monoeye game on the wonderswan).
      its alot of fun how they play around with the universes, like for example, you follow char after the oyw, or for example how in one mission you face the federation from seed and the titans + scirocco. or how since the game lacks many units, some pilots use other machines, like MU using the core booster then the gaplant instead of the moebius/skygrasper.
