- this is the follow on from how to patch rust
using a MIG welder It is one method that works very well
practice on a off cut in order to get your heat setting right
then its just a matter of joining the dots
don,t rush taking your time between each staggered section, means less heat build up

God I love how much people enjoy teaching if they love their job. TH-cam is now the university of life!
me to! its so unbelievable how we were in the dark ages of DIY knowledge. i started this channel cause no one was uploading with explanations, now there is heaps of tradesmen showing body work.
A great thank you to people like yourself! Knowledge is the key, and thanks for sharing.
I concur with all of the above. Thanks.
Brevity and seriousness. Much appreciated.
A very professional overlap repair with awarness for panel overheat.
I'm a third year Boilermaker apprentice mate and your videos just proves how much there is to learn in the metal industry. Very professional and knowledgeable videos! I'm glad i subscribed, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK BUD!
You sir are an asset to me with this video alone. I couldn't get a filler plate to stick without shifting or distorting, tried this and now they stay true. Thank you so much.
This isn't the first video of yours I've come across. Always insightful.
A particularly useful video. Thank you for putting together. Right to the point.
Restolad, I just got back into wrenching after some years away and just want to say thanks for the videos. Spot on advice and it really helped me get back into panel beating, welding and painting. Keep up the good work, mate
My friends Restolad: Thank you for making these videos from Argentina!!!!!
Very detailed, instructional videos. Restolad has taught me a lot. Thanks brother.
Best explanation and demonstration I have seen. This helps me a lot. Love your vids, keep em comin
Nice, concise and informative video mate, thank you.
Good video. You even mentioned welding opposite sides of the patch to distribute the heat as it should be.
Well done, buddy.
looks nice Restolad...I like your tip on knocking the tops of the tack welds !
Another great, informative video Restolad. Thanks for imparting your knowledge.
very helpful video restolad. definitely gave me some confidence to tackle some rust repair on the ol' mk1 rabbit
When you described Stagger Welding you reminded me this is what they taught at TAFE to minimise the risk of warping.
Thanks for the informative video....going to do my first weld on a my mower deck over at a friends house....going to apply what you have taught me here....ty for taking the time to teach us!
brilliant video, great to see it actually being done
Thank you for making these videos. I'm a bit rusty (pardon the pun) but you have reminded me of what I once knew. Thanks again!
Thank you, I've never welded before but looking into bodywork repair as another skill. This helps a lot :)
Just learned to bought lincon 140 gas use 75/25 argon mix 20 cfm on regulator for sheet i find wire speed 5 high heat works best in and out tacks
Awesome video. Explained it exactly how I wanted to know. Thanks for the upload.
thanks a lot mate. Very useful unlike other videos
Quick and very informative video, thanks! Might get a project car with a LOT of rust, so I'm gonna need to soak up as much information as possible. Barely welded before, so it's gonna be a challenge, thats for sure
Video about fabricating complicated repair pieces and trying to do a original looking repair would be cool. Keep these videos coming!
You would make a good welding teacher.
Excellent demo, Thankyou very much.
Ah buh. I was only joking originally, trying to imply i got it from watching the vid. However, went and started welding whilst waiting for a new helmet to arrive, used gas goggles...........and got mild arc eye only in my left eye though.
New helmet arrived today so ive been cracking on this morning. Helpful vid 'lad so thank you for the reminders as itd been a few years since id used a mig
Great video man, just what i wanted.
I knew that allready !! you are doing a great job of welding patch
Always apply rust protection to the back of the weld. Zinc spray with a long nozzle + rust protective oil inside of panel.
wow that is impressive cheers for that Im up grading my MIG right now might have a play with that one day Restolad
Great vid! Thank you for the stitch- tips!
I learned something! Thank you!
Thanks for an excellent lesson!
Great instruction. Thanks for the video. :)
Very neat. Handy video. Thanks!

Very good! Now i just need to buy a TIG welder to make my subaru like new :)
Thanks for the run through. I would have probably just tried pushing and burned threw it had I not watched this first.

Info tube ..thanks lot

this will come in handy!
Fantastic...many thanks..JR... UK
thanks for the video pal
Thanks man.
Looks nice
awsome thanks for the video :-)
Great demo, I'd like to know what welder your using and the settings. You made it look simple but I know it going take a few burnt holes to get it right.
I am also curious about that
Buy semi thick index card sheet metal as test panels so u don’t test on your car. Then like I was taught in school, start your settings both at a generic number, 3 or 2 preferably, if you don’t get a steady weld tamper with the temp and feed speed but not both, only one at a time, if 3speed-3temp ydoesn’t work, lower temp, or lower speed next. Etc good luck
That's cool!
Cool very helpfull
Great video. I owe you a beer.
cigweld 130 amps .. its getting on a bit now ,will up grade to a inverter mig one day . Restolad
Very nice work! What are the settings on your welding machine?
I love our British friends, they seem to be on some type of speed.
Aussie mate - he might not appreciate that comment much!
cool. thanks.
Brilliant
you the man
Thanks
Good job mate but it sounds like you wire speed is a bit high but this sound is caused by the mig having to strike new arcs all the time because you don't have a puddle going so to all viewers don't hate on restolad
your a legend mate thanks for this. ive got a 78 gemini coupe with some cancer that needs to be touched up, its in a really awkward place though, could i send a pic an get your advice?
Have you tried 'Easy Grind' wire? It allows you to grind away the weld like butter, less heat in the grinding process.
Hi. How come you overlap the edges before you weld it? I have seen other rust repair patches that do not overlap but weld in place. I have to weld in a rust hole in my Cadillac. Just want to get it right. Great video. Thanks.
Love the videos kiwi cousin. What mig welder are you using? I'm thinking of buying a small 180 amp kemppi hobby mig for panel welding only. What do you recommend?
Awesome......
Hey restlad can you make a video of you repairing a large dent on a car showing how to release the dent
Cool sound advice there buddy. What gauge steel would you use this up method up to? 2mm?
Gday.
If you placed a butt panel over a larger area than you've repaired here, eg 12" x 8" in a flat panel, would that pull in the sides too much to be able to get it flat with a thin wipe, or would it still be close to flat afterwards like in this example here?
Thanks.
Awesome
Would TIG be a suitable candidate here too, perhaps silicon bronze brazing?
Resto, some great videos, thanks. Do you use any particular wire for welding car panels? I was told by someone that a special wire is needed for MIG on cars.
One type wire is gas filled the other needs a co2 or argon mix bottle to react.
restolad Hi, what ampage setting is the welder on to weld that piece?
If you were welding in a bottom part of a door what setting would you have the ampage set on in order NOT to burn through,OR if i just used the process you are showing me would it not matter,is it only the constant heat that causes burn through
thank you bud
Hi,
Are you able to do a video on buying a mig welder suitable for panel work?
Great video! However would I need to weld a patch there? Could I not just just fibreglass filler?
Hi im looking at rust repair on my car soon do you use gas wire? or is this welding possible with gasless wire thanks
I'm not much of a welder. Could this be done as well with stick welding? With the same basic idea and maybe a bit of a low amperage?
Hi I have only ever welded old car body's,, but now need to weld a Toyota vvt, what needs to be disconnected so not to blow the electronics ? Many thanks for a great video.
battery disconnect is all that is required
Where do you get those steel rust patches from? I'm in NZ too.
Kempy good very good
Hi, looks like a good video but not getting no sound. I will check my codecs etc.
Across the pond mate
no need to remove the gas tank , if your welding the floor inside the passanger area, of course all the carpet or trim is out. If your not confident dont do it , pay some one else to just to do the welding.
Where did you buy it ?
socamoto my last up load shows the two types of patch fabrication.
the commercial and restoration methods (show car) check it out - restolad
how to patch rust secrets revealed
Can you use a mug without gas to do this
Have I got Arc eye now?
How do I make the rust not come back? Lol...getting a wheel well repaired with new metal and people keep saying the rust will come back. Esp at the weld spot in future because water will somehow get in...really bummed about this because I just got the car smh.. can I Plasti dip over the repair to ensure no water ever comes into contact with the weld repair again? Lol. Best options to make sure the wheel well doesn't rust again at the weld spot ? Thanks for any replies. Need some optimism lol. Going to be paying $800 for a wheel well repair ( cut out old metal and weld in new )
Heat the area with a heat gun or hairdryer to.make sure it is nice and dry, then spray on a zinc primer and when dry, apply your desired finish.
Within 2 seconds of applying the tack, Im ending up with the hole through and burned material (on the car and on the patch). I do not even dream of having a continuous bead. Any ideas what am I doing wrong? MIG, lowest settings possible, Argon on max the valve allows.
sometimes the lowest settings are not the best settings. take a scrap piece of metal (the same you are using to patch the car with) assuming its the same thickness metal as what is on your car. then mess around. try applying tacks, then try to run a bead. wire speed is important on a mig welder. so play with that setting and then the heat. usually speaking the metal you are using is rather thin. so a medium wire speed and low/medium heat with quick tacks and a fair moving pace for the beads should do you well.
