Great overview! Looking forward to the release.I have seen numerous indications that raw will be able to be output to ninja v, but haven’t much in terms of Braw to the Video Assist. Just checking to make sure this will be the case in terms of raw output since based on the info you have (I currently use the Video Assist with the s1h). Thanks for any additional info you may have to this end. And, thanks for the great reviews!

Thanks for the video, Josh. Did Panasonic say anything specifically about B RAW? There is some concern because I don't think they have mentioned it officially, plus the GH6 has been out for a while now and only supports ProRes Raw, and not B RAW.
I've been holding my purchase to switch to Lumix Fullframe from the GH series and I think THIS IS FINALLY IT!

Please note that the operating manual of the Lumix S5 II and version X report bitrate values in mpbs and not in MB/s.
These are two different metrics, which require technical considerations and evaluations production to determine the type of work and characteristics that can actually be achieved by these two versions.
The reason for using Mbps seems to be for marketing reasons, since the numbers are high, while expressing them in MB/s will give you surprises. The machines are good, but the streams they offer are in the case of the X are internally with a maximum of 75MBs, via USB 100MBs and via HDMI 200 MBs with colour sampling of 12 bits, which compared to a film camera like Black Magic 6 K is light years away, where the streams in MBs reach up to over about 980 MBs, therefore with a significant volume of metadata for post production and colour grading. Love your content - is the new AF just a software change or is it hardware? If it’s software would we see a firmware update for the S cameras like the S5 and S1R that I shoot with? Also is there a comparison between the S5iiX and the S1H?
There is a hardware component. The new cameras have a sensor with 779 AF points compared to the original ith 225.
I would also love a firmware update to my original S5 bit Panasonic need to make some money lol
I think this is a great showcase of good marketing from Panasonic!
Release the S5 II with a lot of amazing upgrades at the same price as the S5 Mark I.
Then release the S5 II X for 200-300$/€/£, make it Matt black (doesn’t cost them a thing) and make some mainly software updates.
And people will be happy for all the extra and not feel ripped off.

I think a lot of those codecs have licensing cost hence the price bump. The cost of both cameras are low for what they offer IMHO.
@@garypranzo9334 Even if we factor costs of the new codecs, the cost of the codecs should be a maximum of 30% of the increase in price.
I think it is less as the increase is the retail price increase and you have the margin of the retailers in there as well.
I think Panasonic are doing a good job trying to position their cameras a bit higher in the price range.
Prices are still good comparatively.
It sucks that for us in the EU the price is 2500 Euro while the US Price is 2200$ for the Lumix S5 II X
I know in the EU we have 20% VAT included but if you are not buying the camera as a business you are paying considerably more.

Anyhow, in the State of Delaware, USA -- there is no VAT and also no "sales tax" on anything. A standard European mindset cannot possibly understand & accept that. In Europe, you see, they tax you BEFORE you are even born -- and long after you are dead, too.

I'm shooting with Sony at the moment. But, I started shooting with the Panasonic GH5 a few years ago when filming my first feature film. I've always thought that Panasonic has the best skin tones of any brand. I'm considering the S5iiX because of the features, especially including the ability to record to an SSD. Either the S5ii and S5iiX are game changers for Panasonic. These two cameras just may increase Panasonic's market share to a dramatic extent. Panasonic FTW.
Amen. Panny is on ther roll, for sure. For video, definitley Lumix S5 IIX is the one to get. Not only can you record straight to your own SSD, but you can also use the camera as a very high end webcam / IP camera. And now we have finally a wide range of topnotch and inexpensive cinema lenses with the Leica L-mount. All is good in Panaland.

Does it have anything similar to Sony's clear image zoom? For my use case I use a 14mm at 4k60fps with the APSC crop, and sometimes need to use clear image zoom to zoom in a bit more.

It is kinda lame, that you need to upgrade the S5ii for ProRes Raw recording, but thats fine if you dont need it. Still strange cause the S5 can do it out of the box.
Do you know which framerates are supported for 5.9k ProRes external SSD recording are supported on the S5iix? Only 24p I assume.

@@FrankJoseph911 it depends what you are aiming for. If you need ProRes Raw go for S5ii, but most oft the time you are fine with ProRes. If you need the SSD recording with ProRes options the S5ii will offer that like the GH6 does. But you can use an external recorder such as an atomos Ninja V with the S5 for ssd recording. I think you are fine with both cameras. S5ii is more compact for ssd recording since you don't need a recorder
Would the s5II X allow for faster tethering to mobile phones via usb c for file transfer and monitoring? Or is that more or less the same as on the s5II and prev lumix cameras?

Nice video, you're getting me hyped up to sell my S5 for this. One thing I could not quite figure out yet: will the s5iix have apsc crop at 4k/60 and especially at anamorphic 4:3 60fps?
I'm pretty sure it does still have a 4k60 crop😭
The 4K 60 on the S5iix will still be cropped, and all of the 4:3 anamorphic modes are also cropped

do you think that there's any improvement in video image quality, either shooting internally (v-log) or in external raw, vs the gen 1 model? And do you think that an all-i clip from the S1H would be indistinguishable from an all-i clip from the S5iix, are the codecs the exact same? (apart of course from the effect that the S1H's olpf would bring)
I think once you upload footage to any online platform, the video gets compressed anyways. I think ALL-I codecs do definitely look more detailed, but the difference becomes far less distinguishable the minute you push it out somewhere.
Shooting RAW is a different story though - you get so much control compared to internal codecs, and that's why I love shooting ProRes RAW (albeit at the cost of 1,000 hard drives!)
@@JoshCameron Thank you for your answer! Definitely agree with you about Raw, it's really worth the trouble. My question was more if you think there's a difference in video image quality between the former and the new models, when shooting at these highest possible settings.
I'm just kind of concerned about the black on black text and labels for the s5IIx. And whether that text will still be readable, especially in low light.
I don't really get why open gate practically is better for social media work.
If you have to frame an object and the top and bottom need to be visible at 16:9 and 9:16 it will need to sit between your horizontal frame markers and centered within vertical markers probably with space left and right - basically center of the frame, so you might as well shoot landscape with portrait film markers, itll be a lot easier to judge than shooting open gate. Plus the social media resolution needs for vertical video is very low anyway.
The New PDAF is amazing
Covering the brand on cameras is a trick street photographers use to not draw attention to their valuable cameras. One of the things that interests me is that the “All Black” design makes me think they are in a way protecting street photographers. 🤔

Do you have info about the IP Streaming capabilities of the S5 II X compared to the S5 II?
I do not need the extra video features but I will probably need live streaming in the future for my TH-cam channel.
When the regular S5 II comes out in my country - there is a deal with the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 bundle that costs 586 Euro !!! LESS than the S5 II X with the same bundle.
This is a SIGNIFICANT saving for me considering I wanted to buy the 50mm f1/1.8 lens as well.
The thing I don't know is if the IP Streaming capabilities are a NEED or a want.
I'm hoping the X model doesn't have any problems with shooting in the 1080p modes, everyone doesn't shoot in 4K.

I just thought I'd give you a heads up, there's a difference between MB/s and Mbps. MB/s = Megabytes per second, whereas Mbps = Megabits per second. I wanted to message this directly, but I wasn't sure how sorry.
Pretty pumped for this S5 IIX! Looks like Panasonic's created the perfect hybrid for me (internal NDs would be nice, but hey, would it still be a hybrid after that?). For now, I'm very happy with my Z Cam E2-S6, but this Panasonic release will definitely fill in those gaps that I can't achieve with the Z Cam.

Hi @@FrankJoseph911 , I'd use the better codecs for commercials, music videos, and narratives (anything that requires shooting in a higher codec/quality). For weddings the S5 ii would be fine. I only shoot Long GOP for weddings to save space, and there are no codec requirements for a wedding.

@@FrankJoseph911 Narratives usually involve a script and acting. Such as short films and feature films. What you need will really dpend on your output needs. For example, when shooting music videos, the label can supply you a list of shooting requirements (such as MOV 422 10-bit). Narratives will often require or ask for higher codecs such as Pro-res or RAW for post production flexibility.

Are you sure it’s got BRAW externally with the update, as there doesn’t seem to be anything in writing. I asked another ambassador and they said it hasn’t been confirmed.

one thing I hate about my s5 is that it doesn't down convert 4k signal to 1080p so I can't use a lot of cheaper monitors and transmitters, even the GH5 has that feature. Is it avaiable on the s5ii and s5iix?

Correct, so the S5iix will come with RAW over HDMI out of the box, but the S5ii wont. So, if you did want the RAW capabilities with the S5ii then you will need the upgrade key!

In the US the S5 II X is 2199$ but in the EU it is 2499 Euro a 299 Euro difference!
In the EU it is with 20% VAT tax included and if you have a company you can business expense it but if you don’t buy it for a company the difference is sizable.
I am excluding the people that will pay it just for its design.

How often will I really use these features? Internal long gop is very good... Price difference is 300eur (15%?)... I have a ninja v but I've shot only a couple of projects in prores raw.... Hard choice :-)
If you don’t need the ProRes 5.8K via SSD or the RAW output desperately, then maybe the S5ii (and then you can always upgrade the S5ii to allow raw output at a later date!)

ehhh it honestly doesn’t seem like the differences between the s5ii and s5iix are on a hardware level but just software, in which case they’re just withholding the capabilities of the s5ii in order to sell a more expensive s5iix
I wish they’d just allow the s5ii to purchase an upgrade to get the same features as the s5iix. I also prefer the red accents of the normal s5 and s5ii over the blacked out s5iix, but that’s personal preference

I’m still kinda at a loss as to why these are two cameras. If they were making a video centric camera why not put a CF Express card in it to handle the high bitrates🤷🏾♂️.
The Fuji XH2s can record 4k in ProRes internal. Stick to that one.
Why do they have to release two separate versions? Why not just release one version with all the features included. We have to wait until May to get the X version.
Some people won’t need the added features and may just want to save a little money :)

@@JoshCameron bummer. Josh can you contact a Panasonic engineer and ask them about my issue with the S5 and the phone app, Lumix Sync? When I have paired my S5 with the app it froze on me 3times and the bottom of the body was really hot. Only that helped to pull out the battery and reboot. I think it is because the camera is in constant connection with the phone, it does not allow even delete pics from camera when paired, what is annoying. The app is so bad, Nikon's app is much more better and working seamless. I used the app with bluetooth to instantly send the pics to the phone to review them. After the freeze and reboot all settings were gone snd reset to the last one what was used before pairing. Thanks... i will never have the chance to make a claim, so maybe now you can contact them directly. :D
