      Nope. He assaulted that woman (SA, Physically, and Mentally) for decades. He ensured she thought she was alone in this world just to break her. One trip from Africa does not suffice. Especially just to get the root off 🤷🏾‍♀️😂

      Yes. My ''father". He has been a good dad to his kids family born from marriage. But he met my mom when she was sixteen, he was already married. Got my mom pregnant and didn't reach out to me until his wife passed on, when I was in my twenties. He is just not a good man. I'm not bad, but I won't be his friend and I'm pretty sure he's about to die.

    Was Mister redeemed? Hell Nah! I think after he realized that Celie made his life easier despite all the trauma he caused her the guilt caught up to him. He did right to bring her sister and kids, but that does not undo all the wrongs he did.

    You know that saying “I can forgive but I won’t forget” yes he finally did something nice for her, but that one nice act doesn’t amount to decades of sexual, physical, emotional & mental abuse! If I was Celie I would definitely say “thank you, I wish you the best of luck with life!” & move on with my own life & family without him!

    • @ladylequvia7
      @ladylequvia7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes!! Celie went through 40 years of abuse. Her life was stripped from her starting with her stepfather and then Mister. No one deserves treatment like that. And yes your mind doesn't forget what you've been through. Sadly people still choose to treat others how they've been treated. Mister's father verbally abused him and so he treated Celie and everyone else the same. Celie was abused and still chose to treat others with kindness (Shug talked down to her but she took care of her, she still served Mister and his 'rotten kids' 😆, and she still believed that there was hope somewhere for her.) Whew!! It is definitely a lot to unpack with this.

    • @corlenajames1381

      I wouldn't tell him 'thank you' nor would I have wished him well. Breaking someone's nose & then offering to stitch up the wounds you created does not warrant any gratitude from the injured party.

    I've used this analogy time and again, but years ago, I read this passage where a man and a woman were arguing. I forget what the man did, but he told her, "I've said I'm sorry so many times!" So, she told him, "Take that plate, throw it to the ground and break it." He did it. She said, "Now, tell it you're sorry." He did. "Did that fix the plate?"
    The point being, you can say sorry, but that doesn't make the pain of all the things you've said and done go away. Putting a band-aid on a gunshot doesn't fix the gunshot or take away the pain. I'm not sure if there is enough he could have done to atone for all the things he's done and said to Celie and Nettie. To start, they were mere children! I think Nettie was 12 or 13 and Celie was 14 or 15.
    What he did at the end of the movie was just a start. Also, in the book, he and Celie were both in love with Shug. Now, at the end of the book, he proposed the idea of them (he and Celie) getting back together, saying they were still "man and wife". She declined, and I believe the book ended with them just opting to be friends. But bringing her family back from Africa was simply a start, not a full atonement. There's not enough he could have done for the decades he took away from Celie and Nettie.
    Sure, what he did was the catalyst for Nettie to go to Africa and help raise her sister's children. Ultimately, she made sure they grew up healthy, happy, and smart so they could finally meet their mother. But at the end of the day, who's to say that Celie couldn't have gone to Africa with them, and been educated and enlightened while raising her children, too?

  • @taylorscrews2284
    @taylorscrews2284 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    Never part. Naw that one act of kindness definitely didn’t redeem him. Running Nettie off in itself was a borderline evil act but hiding those letters FOR DECADES. That’s almost psychotic in it’s pettiness.

  • @matthewennis3591
    @matthewennis3591 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    It’s a tricky situation, had Mister never separated them, they may never have gotten Celie’s children together, they’d still be in Africa thinking they had no Kin, however by breaking them apart, he caused them both decades lot of pain, especially Celie. I don’t think reuniting them was enough to make up for all he did, but I guess it was a start

    Never Part...
    I see this movie a hundred times. My thoughts is. Mister didn't really start "redeeming" himself until everybody stop messing with him, especially his kids. When she put the curse on him, she said "everything you done to me, is already done to you". He was alone, old, couldn't really function. I think at some point, he started to believe he was cursed, so he did what he thought would uplift the curse. He went and got her family together. By the time we see him again after seeing them reunite, he was looking healthier. I don't think anything could ever redeem himself or be forgiven. The only thing I could feel sorry for, his father raised him to be that way. Shug was the one that was able to saved Cecily. Shug was able to manipulate Mister because she knew he like her. And them Sophia was able to help. Harpo apologizing and stood against his father. So with each person helping Cecily, it gave her the strength to stand up against Mister. In real life, I think Cecily would have eventually killed him. Also, I do think slaves did poisoned slaveowners. Again, I'm glad I found y'all channel. 💯

    He tortured that woman for decades and only “redeemed” himself to lift the curse after she found the strength to leave him. I think it would be best for Celie if Mister effed off forever. I would think she would be just fine if she never saw Mister again. That would be the case for me.

    Mister really wanted to marry Nettie. A lot of scandalous when Mister sleeps with Shug Avery. Sometimes saying you're sorry doesn't make up for the things you did to a person or a person did to you. It doesn't make it right.

    There is a movie quote that I love that has stayed with me most of my life; nearly 3 decades. "Why would the devil punished those that he's supposed to adore, to prove a point to a God he's supposed to despise?" That quote was from the movie Crazy As Hell. The movie is really good and most people don't heal completely from their trauma. Victims don't need to forgive themselves because it wasn't them that was in any control of their life they lived. Also, the very treatment black people went through with slavery stayed in the community due to the constant perpetual mistreatment by the men to the community. Women had no choice; especially when being groomed as a child then later becomes a mindset to keep a little peace between the men. Growing up it was always keep that MAN happy, not just be happy. Just saying. Great video.

    Mister is among the most evil characters in film. I said what I said lol.
    Plus he knew she had put a curse on him, did he do it because he wanted to do something good to make up for what he was, or was he just trying to get the curse off? If that’s the case it was still selfish.

    In the book Harpo helped his Dad fed him & bathed him when he got old. Also when Nettie came back from Africa Mr was on the porch too when they reunited and him & Celie developed a friendship in the end and he said I’d like to marry you again and she said no she just enjoyed their friendship. It dawned on him & he said after all of these years I never realized what good company you are because they used to just talk and sit on the porch. Squeaky and Suge husband got together and Celie and Suge were in a relationship they left so much out of the movie.

    I’ll say he is redeemed because Celie forgave him. I believe in the book they became friends.
    If I can remember correctly, Alice Walker said these characters were loosely based on her grandparents and she heard stories about How mean and evil her grandfather was in his younger days but by the time she knew him, he was a nice old man. So she was inspired to write about the life journey of going from one extreme to the other.

    Mister could never be redeemed. He only did that because he was trying to reverse the curse. If he just woke up feeling convicted and decided to do the right thing going forward it would have been more sincere but it would never erase the damage. In the book , they ended up being friends and tried to remarry Celie and when she turned him down he even helped her to live her life as a lesbian, keeping men at bay when they were in public etc. But as far as the movie goes, hell no to Mister!!!

  • @ebert311
    @ebert311 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I voted no in the poll. Love that you are having this discussion on this great movie. My comment is that Mister. was a product of his father's incredibly sloppy raising. However, each generation of "Mister."'s got better. Mister figured out that he was wrong and tried to redeem himself. Harpo tried to be his father but learned by those mistakes and that's why Sophia stayed with him. Celie's success came when she left her tragic environment. I think Mister understood that he had to change, and he wouldn't have found success until he 'did right by her'. The last scene with the sisters doing their pattycake while we watch him in the background walking means something. He was finally able to move on and that's why he was able to move beyond Celie and her curse. The sisters were able to have the true, free connection that they always wanted. In my mind, they would live near each other and know each other (because they were family), but there wouldn't be any real relationship. But that's what forgiveness is about. I don't forgive to take someone off the hook. I forgive to get me off the hook, so they don't live in my mind, heart, and spirit rent free. Man, this movie and story is so good!!!

Only one that showed that balance was Shug Avery's husband, who eventually got drunk with Mista and began to talk sh!+ Too.... It's interesting Miss Sophia was the strong woman who after her bout with the police got broken as well. The culture was toxic, and ran by men with a heavy hand. That was his Plight, he didn't know how to navigate that properly. His dad told him that in so many ways the day Miss Celie spit in his water lol. Very interesting. I’m only part way through your video, so maybe you mention this, but he’s more nuanced, and arguably redeemed, in Walker’s book than in any of its adaptations. The eventual friendship between Celie and Albert rings true, possibly in large part due to how his redemption in the book occurs in ways outside their relationship too, such as his tenderness toward Sophie’s sickly child.

I’ve read the book three times. He definitely changed and I still wouldn’t have forgiven him. But since we’re basing this solely on the movie, HEEEEELLLLLLL NO! There is no redemption for him.

    I would have to say, Mister waited too long to take the necessary steps to reunite the sisters. He was just mean to his core and it would take God himself to truly redeem this man. At the end of the day, TMH is the final judge on this one. I don't believe one kind act would clear him of his evil doings but this is just my opinion, however I could be wrong because HE is a forgiving God.🤷🏾‍♀️

    I don't believe that one act made up for all of the hurt that he caused but as they say, hurt people, hurt people. I advise that everyone actually read the Color Purple novel (in which Mister and Celie somewhat reconcile at some point) also check out Alice Walkers collection of essays (theres a section in either Living by the Word or In Search of our Mothers Gardens I cant remember which; I read them well over 20 years ago) but theres a part that discussed a little more about why Mister is the way he is and discusses his own fathers issues...) Again Mister and Celie actually reconciled in the book... in fact so much more happened in the novel than in the movie. A lot got left out so it is imperative to read it to get a better understanding of everything.

    Speaking on in the movie versus the book I feel like we can compare what was left out of the movie from the literary work. Side note: Spielberg left out or lessened a lot from the book in the movie to attract audiences and a lot of things that were wrote in literature wouldn’t be acceptable in society on screen. As for Mr.__ which is how it’s represented in the book was meant to have a redemption arc but in the movie he stays away and doesn’t interfere with her newfound success and now happiness with the reconnection with Nettie and the introduction of her children as adults and daughter in law. I think him being the one who separated Nettie and Celie in the first place and then brought them back together gives him some redemption. I won’t say 100% because he had to reap what he did to Celie and that’s pretty much being alone on that farm. Celie doesn’t owe that man not one thank you she was overdue everything that she earned from her mother and fathers house and store to being with the children she birthed and her sister who equally loves her dearly. This was a good breakdown. Never Part.

    I believe Mister showed learned behaviors from his father and it wasn't until Ceily leaving and him living on his own watching her flourish without him gave him time to self reflect. I think from this movie, “Mister” (Albert) was a “learned” behavior. His father “Old Mister Johnson” perhaps taught Mister everything he learned. Regardless, I really don’t think there’s anything that could be done to correct all the damage that had been done in Celie’s life from both her husband and her father. Mister getting Celie’s kids (now grown) back to her … good. Don’t expect a “thank you”. As far as forgiveness, I would only do it so my spirit could progress on. Mister would never know about it. As far as Celie’s father, if possible I would try to erase that demon out of my memory (father or not).

      Interesting take. But we don't know definitively that an "afterlife" actually exists. Moreover, he could have simply done nothing or spent his money and time on booze, women, or just on himself. I'm not surprised to see these comments. As you may never get forgiveness from others as you try to atone for past events. However, that's the power of redemption. Redemption is very much like self esteem, it's something that you give to yourself...not others. But if those people are appreciative/grateful, it's a bigger win.

    I think at the end of it all it shows that even monsters have souls. He realized he caused the pain, did what he did and got out of the way. He didn't expect anything. He felt he had done enough and the least he could do was to at the very least in this regard make amends. U cant erase the pain, but in this act of kindness, he can dress the wounds and let them heal on they're own. Celie found her family and obtained a new life. Its on her to forgive him and in that i believe if she has found a way to forgive him and move forward, then that's his redemption. The person that was affected by the action has to clear you of that. No one else. Either way he has to live with that decision. No one else. Homeboy was fowl af though! I wonder if she knew he was the one who pulled the strings for her sister and kids to return. I think it's good if she doesn't know. Because then that deed is truly for his own atonement.
