My first thought about Shanice staying at Ricky's house was that her mother kicked her out and she had nowhere else to go. Brenda felt sorry for her and let her stay because maybe the same thing happened to Brenda when she got pregnant with Doughboy. She's a young grandmother which tells me she was most likely a teen mom herself. I don't know, but all that resentment she has toward Doughboy could stem from her past.

@@A.Light33 I thought that too. Especially when Doughboy points out the sentimental value of the football his daddy gave him..
The question is tho.. if his daddy did die.. Was he killed In some form of Gang war.. if so. That would then create a reason that correlates more with this persons comment.. Cuz true enough she'd have every right to hold Love amongst grief In Her heart. But if he was dealing drugs & gang banging, it's like he made himself more vulnerable to being killed and being taken away from his family.. so at that rate you'd think she'd have some resentment about him as well.. UNLESS.. Ricky's daddy illegal activity was paying the bills & such.. them it shows her True values.. hence she favored Ricky cuz she was sure he'd make a lot of money from Going pro as an athlete.

It's obvious she treats her sons according to how she feels about their fathers. Look at how her tone changed after she realized the boy on her porch is the kid of Furious, a man she's interested in. She's the kind of mother to start treating Trey like 💩 if she and furious were to start dating and fell out later on.

    Brenda's Got A Baby
When I was 11, I just thought she was mean and nasty. I had no sympathy for her although I was used to hearing many black women speak to their children this way in my neighborhood.
43 year old me realizes this woman's emotional intelligence/maturity and possibly unhealed trauma led her parenting. She was legally an adult but mentally a child, raising children.

Truth! My mom treated me just like Brenda did Doughboy. Well both my parents treated me that way. I don't know much about my father's upbringing because he didn't like to talk about it. But my mother was adopted and her adoptive mother was abusive. Unfortunately she didn't heal from that trauma and treated me the same way her mother treated her. Both my parents lacked the good emotional maturity and intelligence to be functional loving supportive parents.

The reason that Brenda gets so much hate is because she was a terrible mother to Doughboy. If she had given half the encouragement that she gave to Ricky, both her children could be alive today. It really doesn't matter if she changes after he gets out of prison. She had at least 10 years of letting Doughboy know that he wouldn't amount to anything and that she preferred Ricky to him. Children believe what you tell them. This is why he was in and out of jail. He didn't think he was more than any of that. The damage was already done. Also, she really didn't change all that much. A real change would have been her pouring into Doughboy that he was better than his circumstances, but she didn't. She asked Trey to talk to him. Doughboy always wanted validation from his mother, and she never gave it to him. She may have loved him, but she had a poor way of showing it.

Brenda was definitely a bad mother. Maybe she tried to change, but her attitude towards Dough Boy never really changed. And even if it did, she was so abusive when he was small, he could ever really recover from that. Her opinions of him became a self fulfilling prophecy. Dough Boy could do no right, Ricky could do no wrong. And in the end, they both paid for it. Being the Golden Child was just as damaging.

Theory: Doughboy's father is actually PLOT TWIST
Willie Jones[ aka John witherspoon] from Friday is back in the day willie in his youth use to be Wild, crazy and a playboy ,and use to mess around with multiple women.
He met Brenda(Doughboy mama)had a one night stand with her,and she got pregnant and had Doughboy,Brenda fell in love with willie and wanted to have a real relationship with him,but willie wasn't ready to be a father at the time ,cause he was a young man at the time and plus he and baker would always fight back and fourth,so he left her, which is why Mrs baker resents him and takes her anger out on Doughboy.
Then He had a relationship with another woman, and she got pregnant and had Fudge(From higher learning),but that relationship didn't work out either,so he left her all alone to raise fudge too.
It was until when Willie Met Betty(Craig mama),that he decided to finally change and become a better man and he had a 3rd son(Craig),Willie realized that he was wrong to not be in his other sons lives and decided to do right this time by staying with betty to raise Craig, and teach him how to be a better man, than he was.
Also the reason why the 3 brothers look the same(Resemble ice cube) is because the Jones family got stronger genes on the male side
Evidence: in Friday after next, when mrs pearly tries to flirt with willie, she mentions how he use to called be Big d willie

Shanice could've been a girl who was kicked out of per mom's house due to getting pregnant. That was and is an issue in many homes, especially black homes. Brenda probably felt obligated to take her in since it's her son and grandchild. Had Ricky left to get a place with Shanice and the baby, it would've deterred his football plans and prospects. Imo.

I also, to a degree, blame the parent for how a child turns out. As a mother, I believe in pouring power into my kids. Brenda, from the beginning of the movie, was speaking nothing but negatively into Doughboy. However, with Ricky, it was the opposite. I believe she loved both her sons, she just only believed in one. She lost not only her son Ricky but also her hopes for a better future and better life. #brendasgotababy

When I say Brenda played that hell out of that scene. She deserved an Oscar. I still get choked up seeing that scene unfold, there is no doubt she had love for both of her boys. She just showed it in a different way. She was more tougher on dough because I believe she was disappointed in him because she expected more. Being the oldest myself, the oldest always catch the blows because we have to be the responsible ones over our siblings. We’ve seen mama go thru a lot, the oldest always grows with the mama. The youngest requires more guidance and attention. You can see how Immature Ricky was in his choices, versus Dough. Dough may have been the trouble maker but he was responsible with his sex life: he was really intelligent you see it more after Ricky passed

Ricky was her pride and joy. She poured into him and was delicate in her handling. She hated Doughboy existence because he was a constant reminder of his father. It all stems from the fathers and her Relationships with them. Doughboy father probably left her high and dry or could have been a r.ape baby so she had nothing but obligation for him. She did the bare minimum. She obviously loved Ricky's father and thus loved Ricky. I feel they stayed away from each other until Doughboy got killed 2 weeks later because she reverted back into what we saw in the beginning with the verbal abuse. If Brenda had a daughter, she would be a million times worse. Furious was responsible for his kid. He understood it would be like trying to mop the ocean Saving and mentoring all the kids because there were 2 many outside forces fighting against the lessons. These were generational curses in the making.

But actually, DMX mother was worse than DOUGH BOY'S mother in this film. DMX mother abandoned him at a foster home when he was 10 years old, and she used to be extremely physically abusive towards DMX. That's why DMX expressed so much rage in his music when he first came out. And that's why he continued to battle drug addiction until his death.

So in the context of the movie,Brenda and Ricky were portrayed as closer..in part due to Doughboy's imprisonment. In that time Ricky was almost like an only child..and w Brenda having Doughboy back and w his antics,I'm sure was stressful..and something she never took the time to learn how to navigate.

Brenda absolutely did not like Doughboy. Judging by the way she verbally abused him as a child he grew up without the care and nurturing that children require in that age group. By the time he was a teenager, it was too late to try and have Tre “talk some sense into him”. It’s not uncommon for Black children to be in handcuffs. Where I’m from, the police put a small 8 year old boy in handcuffs for an incident at school that was non-violent in nature. Y’all know Furious was not here for them other boys in the neighborhood 😆😆Which also isn’t uncommon. I saw that a lot growing up and then when I became a teacher and as a social worker.
