I think the model of Clarence, represents the majority of black people throughout America. As many probably do join arenas like law enforcement in order to bring about good and help the community. However, Clarence was shown early in his education the darker, seameier side that was not known or expected. so as for me...I thiink I would have quit the force too. however unlike him, I would have taken up the mantle Martin left behind and tried to destroy the police force as the man he idolized did. Then perhaps Martin's ghost would have taken more sympathy on him.

The sequence playing strange fruit was one of the most riveting and heartwrenching scenes in the movie. I feel Rusty Kundief really crafted an empathetic and geniusly directed/edited sequence, making all who watched feel the pain and plight of black people.

When Morehouse said “where were you when I needed you…brotha” he put emphasis on Brotha because he felt abandoned by the cop that was another black man. Also, he was implying that Clarance should have held those crooked cops accountable right then and there instead of turning a blind eye and deaf ear (and quitting the force), assuming that those cops were going to do the right thing. He should have did MORE to protect him as a citizen AND A Black Man. Instead of killing Clarance too, he chose to haunt him. That’s why it looked like Clarance was talking to himself when really he was interacting with the spirit of Morehouse all day…..every day…..and it drove him into a state of insanity. He was in a Asylum at the end. Not prison. We see Clarance’s body in the coffin because he probably killed himself due to guilt. He went to Hell for collaborating with Morehouse to kill those cops. He was just as guilty. That’s what I took away from this particular tale.
I will say Clarence was in a complicated situation , it was his uniform vs his skin color , ofcourse he chose the former in the moment but his mind couldn’t cope 💯 All time hood classic .
I think his biggest misdeed was not doing enough afterwards I think Clarence really couldn't have prevented his death, but a year passes and he does nothing at all and probably continued to stare at his painting on the wall in which the painting seemed to be looking at him. I think it was looking at him to take his role of activist and let the community know what really happened and lead an effort to specifically bring those COPs down. It is pretty clear that the community already suspected that he was murdered by the COPs but from there perspective it was only a conspriracy theory. Him as an ex Cop would have added weight to the testimony of the community (who in turn would have ended up probably helping uncovering even more evidence and probably finding more examples) plus he knew each COP who were the crooked ones (information the community didn't know). He kept that information to himself (because of fear of retaliation), and maybe he would have died in the process after alerting the community and trying to bring the crooked COPs down, but I think if he would have done that the activist would have never risen back from the dead and he wouldn't have been in "Mental Hell". I think in his conscience Clarence knew what to do and the mural painting staring at him was probably a subtle signal saying he needs to step up and lead the community. But since he never answered the subtle signal of stepping up, the spirit rose from the dead.
I don't really think Clarence was morally compromised like the other characters in the film but was scared of retaliation and had an unquestionable compliance to authority (even when authority is wrong), which is an issue with many people, which is hence why his body floats and eyes open and nobody else body does which to me implies Clarence isn't spiritually in hell but still living on Earth but in a mental hell and a prisoner of his own mind.
Very nicely put. I think Clarence represent something that other black officers go through. You think being an officer, you're going to make a change and bridge the gap between the community and the police. However, you have situations like what Clarence had where you questioned everything you believed in.
So Clarence being a black man in that community... How come he didn't recognize a black political figure fighting for his safety? He had to spend all that time looking him up before he realized...? 🤦🏿♀️🤦🏿♀️🤦🏿♀️🤦🏿♀️

I think it might even be deeper than that. I don't really think he wanted Clarence to try to stop the Police in the act as Clarence would have died as well. Clarence actually did try to do what he could at the moment of what a reasonably moral COP would do. But Clarence was threatened by the COPs and he knew that he would be killed if he tried to stop him at the moment. I think Clarence's biggest flaw was not doing anything afterwards. A year passes, Clarence continues to look at the mural painting who seems to be staring at him. I think that is when the activist Spirit is saying "I need you to step up to the plate". But Clarence (who now quit the force, and what appears to be almost a bum), does nothing, alerts no next of kin, refuses to go to authorities, or take any effort in the direction of helping stop the crooked Cops. It is possible by that time the year passes, the Crooked COPs probably has killed others, and in a way Clarence is responsible for whatever dirt the Crooked Cops subsequently gets away with afterwards as no heat ever comes back at them.
With the activist dead, there was a hole in the community of a leader, and I think the painting looking at Clarence was a signal for him to step up and take action. He had firsthand knowledge of the corruption and had specific names of the crooked COPs. From that point he should have told the activist's family, the community, the media, and authorities the truth of what happened. The authorities would have retaliated but he would have had the community on his side fighting for him and even if he did come up missing or dead like the activist, they would more clearly know what was up and take necessary action. I think the moral of the story is stepping up to take leadership in your community like the Activist lived his life. You might die in the process and in those situations others need to follow and take your place to continue to fight the system.
I think the first story hits home the most as its moral lesson was directed towards most people in general for not doing enough to stop Police Brutality where the other stories were more specific.
Clarence is in a hospital for the criminally insane. His guilt is still driving him mad.
This particular part of the movie used to give me nightmares when he rose from the dead in a zombie like form with those blue eyes and supernatural strength getting vengeance on the corrupt cops that killed him but he also judged and ultimately punished Clarence whom is a brother just like himself for not sticking up for him and revealing the truth!!😱😆✊🏾💪🏾🙏🏾💯
This was a frightening and unsettling and VERY relevant back then and especially now.... Tom Wright is a legend of horror between his role here and in Creepshow 2 as The Hitchhiker 👍 Great job.

I think Clarence was considered insane when charged with the murders of the cops. I feel like martin left Clarence like he left him. He had to deal with the consequences of the violence he knew was being inflicted on the cops like he did with his death.
Also i feel like martin became a vengeful spirit like in the grudge. When someone died a violent death they sometime come back with anger and vengeance until the death is rectified. And martin also gave me candy man vibes
I really like this interpretation, it makes the most sense to me.
To me this story was the scariest out of all of them. I don’t think I was old enough to fully grasp what I was watching. But I definitely remember having reoccurring nightmares about this story right here. I do understand this way more as an adult though. This was an eye opening one right here. I definitely feel Clarence was the example of those within our community who constantly watch us get abused/ mistreated and do nothing about it. Martin coming back to life to take vengeance showed me that the cycle still continues of innocent black people being accused of things they didn’t do and how we continually throw each other under the bus. It reminds me of when police unalive people and the media brings the most ignorant picture of them to make them appear to have deserved such treatment. And when we talk about police crime against us then someone of our community brings on black on black violence.

Even at a young age being a horror fan I understood the concept of that scene and it always made me feel some type of way what they did to Martin. Now that I'm older I haven't watched the movie in a while and I thought y'all did a good job going into depth details with this scene. It was the scariest scene and I still feel that way now. Also, I felt for Clarence he was in a difficult situation and it traumatized the hell out of him leaving him messed up at the end.
This first tale really sticks with me that this really happens in real life and in reality Clarence killed the three cops out of revenge and also i liked that martin Moorehouse came back as a vengeful zombie...................

There’s no way Clarence didn’t hear what was going on, but he was distracted and being a rookie you won’t say anything to senior officers because you’re told to listen to your FTO (field training officer) and higher ranking officers.

I think Clarence actually murdered the cops. The guilt from letting those cops do that to Martin, pushed him over the edge. I think Zombie Martin was Clarence's subconscious overriding his natural self. In real life Clarence would be labeled as a person that just snapped one day. This whole movie is giving us a look behind the curtain of life. Basically, when certain tragic events happen, we conclude that the reason is due to something physical that we can explain logically. In this movie, it's showing what could actually be happening spiritually.
As a kid whenever we were driven back home from wherever we were coming from 😂😂swore always saw Martin moorhouse on the streets!😂😂the things this film did to me
Not a fun fact but just a fact. The policeman who was the black man's partner is Michael Massee. He's an amazing actor and he's the one who accidentally shot Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee's son. He was torn up about it til he passed. Rip to them both.

The man playin’ Martin Moorehouse is the same man that plays the hitchhiker in Creepshow 2. Still to this day, whenever me and my cuzzin are droppin’ each other off, whoever the passenger is will say “thanks… THANKS FOR THE RIIIDE” 🤣
Couple of things (although I enjoyed watching this video immensly and agree with many of the takes you both had), here's my 2 cents analysis:
First off, the ending whereby Clarence is inside the cell, could be taken metaphiricaally as MArtin giving him his initial wish. Clarencee joining the poice force was to be immersed in wyt society and wyt circles. As a part of the "system." Yet in the end, he is indeed surrounded by and entrapped in the insanity of whiteness by the straight jacket and the padded walls of his cell.
Second off all: no matter what institution one joins, in the end a person ALWAYS bends to the doctrine of said system if immersed long enough. This is known as a "culture." Every institution or system the world over has a culture by which one adheres (a culture is simply defined as a was of doingf things within a collection of people). So whether you are talking about the police, the military, justice system or even religion, all of these arenas have a specific way that the people act within that system. And those who come inside these areas eventually take on the tenets of this cultrure. Because you can never be a part of something, without ingesting it in totality. You cannot seperate a system from the culture that feeds it.

• the irony of Strom Thurman having a Black daughter named Essie who didn’t reveal him as her biological father until she was almost 78 years old (after he died in 2003 at the age of 100)

The blonde cop is played by michael massee, he's the actor that accidentally killed Brandon Lee when filming The Crow..... heck of an actor.
The brillance of not having Clarence look up in the writing is symbolic of how black ppl pay no mind to what happens to other black ppl unless they are famous/celebrity/well known.
Now we have a conversation! We cannot simply look away when we see wrongdoing. We should be asking what if we were in their shoes?
@Axiom Amnesia Exactly, which is why Martin still retaliated against Clarence even though he did what he asked of him. Because had he not been a famous person, Clarence would've continued to sit there and mind his business. He was punished for the lack of concern for his own community.

After watching it as an adult I can't help but feel uneasy about Clarence and the doll from tale #3 ending up in hell. What does this mean about morality and Black people receiving retribution? Was Clarence in hell because he was silent about Martin Morehouse or was it because he aided in Martin's revenge? The latter could explain why the doll was also in hell (punished because they took revenge). If this is the case, I don't like the moral lesson at all. I loved that you all asked why the white people weren't in hell because that's another element that I hadn't thought about. Thank you all! In my life experience I’ve seen things where I had to make decisions like this even lost friendships because I did the right thing.

I was definitely surprised Michael Massee(Newton) played a role like this to what he went through during "The Crow". I did not put two and two together as a kid but now as a adult, I was like damn he played the role well. It sad that he was going through that throughout the years but he was building up to be a good character actor.

The world was a different place when these movies were made
I feel like they started the movie this way to seriously catch the viewers attention. This story stood out the most to me due to the fact.. this happens. ..still.... today. Like if the world worked this way... I'm sure it would happen

Keep up the dope work. Idk y’all personally but it’s amazing to see someone covering OUR movies in this type of depth.
Basically what made this tale deeply uncomfortable was it was a perfect reflection of past and future events namely that of mentioned Rodney King and also of George Floyd. Multiple cops on the scene yet no one questions the actions and methods of the senior officers on the scene or intervenes. In reference to Clarence in the movie and real life Clarence Thomas is that they had a decision to make in between choosing to protect one's CLASS or protecting the well being of one's own RACE. And in both Clarence's case we know one chose poorly by choosing to protect their class (Clarence Thomas) and the other chose poorly through inaction meaning inaction is also a conscious choice. Racism is painfully and blatantly obvious in this tale but at the same time we ignore the CLASSISM that is attached to it. The one big difference between movie Clarence and real life Clarence is that movie Clarence is actually haunted literally and figuratively by the shame and guilt of his inaction and complicity in those past events which made him quit the police force.

Clarence’s partner and later turned to graffiti was played by Michael Masse (he was tragically given the prop gun that shot Brandon Lee in The Crow and for about he took a year off from acting because of that incident. He passed away not too long ago.)
Fun Fact: When Clarence sees Martin on the cross, right behind him is a poster for Natural Born Killers.
Rusty Cundieff really tried to make sure that none of the palm trees in the Inglewood Cemetery up on camera during the cemetery scene, because he wanted to keep an air of mystery of where the the movie was set.

He did not even take a leak on that mans grave either! I guess he was originally suppose to do that but maybe he refused because maybe he felt even more horrible doing that. Considering he accidently killed brandon lee on set.

I feel as though he’s the only one to wake up in the coffin because he’s the only one fully not at rest, even in death he will rise to what seems to be the voice of Martin from his grave as he did when he was told to bring them to him. And when the devil was telling the story he called his name basically summoning him. Seems as though Clarence will not rest as long as the injustices are still going on and as we see throughout the movie they’re still going on.

Hey Jay!!! From the point Clarence pulled up to that scene, his chances of emerging unscathed were slim. Honestly, I think the cops would have killed him if he had snitched. He was doomed from the beginning.
I sorta noticed something. When the other 2 cops were peeing on that man's grave, Michael masses character was the only character that didn't do that and I think you can see genuine disgust in his face when they started doing that.
Considering that he accidentally killed Brandon lee on the set of the crow. He truly didn't like what he saw in this scene.

Why did Clarence body float? I think unlike the other Characters who did alot of bad things. Clarence was the least deserving of hell (based off of his story).
He clearly wasn't okay the the cops beating the guy, he tried stepping in, and the guy getting killed apparently affected him mentally.
Main thing he was guilty of was not doing enough. I think there was little he could have done during the killing as it would have been two dead black people instead of one during the time but I think a big point was that a long time (1 year?) passes before the guy rises from the dead. I think that mural painting of the guy was a sign that he was martyrized and staring directly at him. I think ultimately they wanted him to take his role of a community activist and join forces with the community he was leading. Him being an ex cop (and one who witnessed him being murdered) would have carried alot of weight. With the community on his side they could have made charges against the cops (or attempted to) or at least let the community know of the specific cops being crooked. He might have gotten killed in the process but the point is with an active vigilant community, it is much harder for the cops to ever do their dirt. Instead a year later he has quit his job, mentally defeated and essentially doing nothing. If he was doing something about it, they activist never rises from the dead. His fate was shown being locked in a mental institution (mental hell and prisoner of his own mind), but I think it is a bit deeper than that, from the beginning of the story he was already a prisoner of his mind and remained a prisoner of his mind throughout the whole story. The "Where were you brother" quote was clearly aimed towards Black people in general, I think the first story is the writers aim towards Black people not doing enough in their community to stop police brutality.
I'm leaning more towards Clarence not being actually dead but in a mental hell on Earth hence why his eyes opens and floats back up signaling he is on Earth and still living but his mind is in hell.
I wonder at that point though do the guys realize they are actually dead but are in a state of denial. Because at some level all of these stories also fall into examples of the ills the guys are guilty of.
1. Not doing enough.
2. Brutality
3. Racism (or in their case racism towards their own kind which story 4 confirms)
4. Street life (and also Racism towards themselves)
I think story 4 which is the weirdest but least scary to the audience but from their view was the scariest because it hit home for them. So story 3 and story 4 are morally related as they probably got a kick out of the 3rd story but took awhile for them to realize they were guilty of the same thing.
How did Clarence die? Was he killed, or did he commit suicide? They never said it.

Yeah, he didn't speak up and speak out as that horrendous and unfortunate event occurred.... but I don't think what happened constituted him to go to hell. So basically, because of his indecisive actions, the guilt manifested as Martin, and he couldn't handle the voices anymore.
No I don't think he would have because this happens on camera people don't stop lol this movie is proof nothing changed in the race of America today sad but this movie is a masterpiece

So what cracks me up is that out of all episodes as a kid the only one I remembered from creep show is the black tar and the hitchhiker thanks for the ride last 😂. Tales from the Hood scared me as a kid but I never looked this deep into it. The dates literally wowed me and made sense. This one was very deep. Thanks for your view and strange is my favorite Billy Holiday song.
This is a hood classic. I was so so disappointed in part 2. The only story I liked was the last one with Emmett till. Please do a breakdown of that one maybe you could change my mind.

There is a thin blue line with cops. They try not to rat on other cups, or make waves with other cups even if that cop is rotten apple.

This movie was filmed in L.A. I believe the scene in the cemetery is off of Manchester and Florence!!! Great stories though this came out I was 6 years old and I’m 35 now time flys!!!
As a former corrections officer, I understand Clarence’s situation. Now, granted, I never had to make a decision based on race vs. uniform. It was in a primarily rural area and there weren’t many black folks, a challenge in and of itself.
I remember a training video where there was a straight laced cop that did everything by the book and he pisses off a cop and his partner. When straight lace got in trouble and he tried to radio for back up the cops he pissed off would step on his communication so it wouldn’t get through. That always felt threatening to me.
I had a time where I was in the highest Gen pop unit by myself (county jail) and I would hope that if something happened folks would get there on time. I remember having a situation in a unit and I called for aid. An officer who I had issue with showed up dead last without a care.
It’s hard to do what’s right when folks doing wrong are supposed to have your back when you get in trouble. That and the nightmares are among the main reasons I quit. I don’t even like thinking of those years.
However I do recall I was rising in the ranks, started standing up for myself and in some instances other inmates when necessary, and then the fast track is over.
Now, granted, wrong is still wrong. But Clarence Thomas is getting personal, political, and financial gain. Clarence I’m this short is just…cowardly.

Also, also I love how you two break everything down and I didn't realize how much each character aside from Martin Moorehouse and Clarence had significant meaning. Very well done, on your guy's part and Rusty Cundieff. I saw a little of his commentary on the movie and he spoke of this tale, saying the point we wanted to make was that our actions and inactions have consequences.
