In the book it was Squeak that got Sofia out of Jail. She was getting beat real bad. They cracked her scull and broke her ribs. Cecile, Harpo, Sofia’s sisters were all stressed out and worried sick about her. Squeak was half white and convinced her uncle the prison guard at the jail to let her go and have her work for the Mayor’s family, after he raped Squeak during her visit…Squeak was also helping to care for Sophia’s kids too. She had a-lot of substance in the book.

I just reread the book the week before I went to go see the movie the day after Christmas, so this part is fresh in my memory.
Harpo, Celie, Shug, Mister, Squeak, Sophia's Sister Odessa, and Sophia's boyfriend Henry were all sitting around the dinner table, trying to figure out how to help Sophia. They were concerned that she was going to die in prison.
Mister asked if the warden had any black kinfolk.
Then Henry asked what th warden's name was, and Harpo told him Bubber Hodges. Then Squeak spoke up and asked if he had a brother named Jimmy.
Mr. Said yes, and then Squeak mumbled that Jimmy was her father, which would make the warden her uncle.
Squeak then said she remembered her father Jimmy and her uncle, the warden, coming to her house once when she was younger.
After realizing this, everyone discussed it and decided that Squeak should go down and try to talk to her uncle on Sophia's behalf.
They hope that realizing that he was her uncle. He would be lenient and let Sophia be free.
They bathe Squeak and dress her up fancy like she was a white woman and even give her and a black bible to make her look innocent.
They told her to go down and talk to her uncle and what to say. Squeak was worried because she hadn't seen this man in fifteen years. She felt he wasn't going to remember her. They told her to go do it anyway and try her best.
When Squeak got back home, she was limping, her dress was ripped, her hat was missing, and her heels were torn off her shoes.
She told everyone that the warden had violated her. She went on to explain what happened.
Squeak said that she did everything everyone suggested. She told the warden that prison suited Miss Sophia, just fine, and she was happy. She said that it wasn't a punishment enough to work in the wash house and that Sophia would rather be doing that than working as a maid for a white woman.
Squeak then said the sheriff got up and came around from behind his desk and walked up to her. He asked her who her kinfolks were, all the time lusting after her.
She said she told him everybody's name. And then he said, "Who's your Daddy?" and she said I ain't got no daddy.
Then he said, "Everybody's got a Daddy, and I know I've seen you before."
So then that's when she told him who her daddy was and reminded him about what happened ten years ago when she was a child.
Squeak then said that after she told him that, he took her hat off and told her to undo her dress. Then, he said if he was her uncle, He wouldn't do what he was about to do her.
After that, Sophia was released out of the wash house at the prison and sent to work for Miss Millie, the mayor's wife. This was three years after she was initially assaulted and put in prison.
So, in the book, it explains that the only reason Sophia got out of prison and ended up working for Miss Millie was because Squeak went down there to talk to the warden. He believed her when he she said prison wasn't punishment enough for Sophia.
But instead of freeing Sophia, he sent her to do what she didn't want to do in the first place. That became her punishment. Working As a live in maid for Miss Millie.
All of this at the detriment of Squeak being unjustly violated in the process.

One thing I noticed was the difference between Squeak and Sophia. Squeak was everything Harpo wanted Sophia to be-submissive and docile towards men. The fact that he told Squeak to shut up at the dinner table and she did exactly that exemplifies what I'm referring to. Despite all of this, he clearly was still in love with Sophia and was only with Squeak because her weakness made him feel masculinated whereas Sophia’s independence made him feel emasulated. This goes to show that back in those days (and even for a lot men today) having a woman stroke your pride and ego was more important than actually being in love with her

Okay, so I agree with what ya’ll said. What I disliked most about the new one was the dinner scene (it didn’t hit the same), when Nettie and Celie were separated by Mister, the “God is trying to tell you something” and the facts that they barely touched on Nettie’s experience in Africa with the children. Some expected dialogue was left out too (You sho is ugly, for example). I just did not care for the new version, but I will say that the best part of the new version was when Sophia cried when Celie visited her in jail and said “Don’t Leave Me.” That hurt as much as that “Nothing but dead can keep me from it” quote from Nettie in the 1985 version. I love the original and wished that they’d just left it alone. No more remakes/reimagining of our classics.

  • @Gen_X_Rosey
    @Gen_X_Rosey 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Another commenter is right, you have to listen carefully. When Celie picks up that knife and slams it into the table, she says, "I curse you." It's so subtle, but as she holds the knife to his throat, she is putting a hex on him. Then puts another hex on him outside, "Everything you done to me, already done to you." Albert took that seriously. It scared him and you could see it. That part, to me, was so satisfying.

Also they made an earlier attempt to send Squeek to go talk to the sheriff to get her out because she was related to him. Unfortunately she was rapped and sent away. Harpo was sad cause his wife was in jail and his woman was rapped.

I preferred the 1985 version because of the acting. Don’t get me wrong, the actors in 2023 version are good but they just didn’t compare to the original. I felt every word Celine said at the dinner table in 1985. And I just started liking Danny Glover again, he terrified me in the original version. Margaret Avery brought something to Shug’s character that Taraji unfortunately missed. In the original, Shug was strong and powerful but she was vulnerable too. Now Sofia vs Sofia, they were both great.
There wasn’t even any real purple in it. That field in 2023 looked like it had like 3 flowers, where was that field of purple.

I feel like their biggest flaw was trying to combine the film and the stage show instead of just giving us the stage show on film. Although I was excited for this movie, I didn't enjoy it. Even though it was based on the musical, it came off (to me) as an improv version of scenes of the movie with some music thrown in.
Had it not been based on a movie I love and a book I've immersed myself into, I would discount this remake as a UPN Made for Television project from the late 90s/early 2000s. I know how I'm supposed to feel for every character, but I didn't feel anything watching this cast. The scenes outside of the iconic scenes were not fleshed out well enough to excuse them not nailing the recreation.
I'm still waiting on Amazon to give us a 10 episode series actually diving into what Alice Walker wrote, but I'm afraid after this we'll never get the story told.

I'm weird in that I don't want Danielle Brooks to win. For me, it's better that Color Purple goes unrewarded than for the masterpiece of the 1985 version to be diminished by the implication that any of the performances of the 2023 version deserves an award where the 1985 version didn't. Danielle Brooks was great but she (IMO) was just doing an imitation of Oprah's performance.

It is obvious the reason why they had to change so much of the way this scene laid out in the 2023 version and so many of the other scenes. They were trying to use the stronger actors to push the scene along so that there would be less focus on the weaker actors. And the 2023 version it seems to me that Celie is no longer the lead character

This might be the case. My question is, if it's so obvious, why didn't the director realize casting mistakes that would impact the viability of the entire film?

A lot of big blow up scenes happen in movies at the dinner table. In the madea movie when bow wow finds out his sister is his mom. In another movie with Kimberly Elise and Monique and Danny glover and Keri hilson etc. are at the table and Kimberly finds out her husbands cheating and has his mistress sitting beside him. Soul food when the ladies finally say what’s on the hearts it all happens at the table. Possibly becuase it’s family and no matter how disfunctional everyone has a seat at the table so that’s gone be the best place to say your peace and not have to say it multiple times in side conversations here and there. We all here so let’s talk about it.

Please react to the movie ‘Get Out.’ I feel like it’s so fitting for today’s society. An all time classic from Peele’s catalog. My favorite movie from him to be honest 💯

The purposeful removal of the "Black Trauma" from most of the story, that was important to the book and film, completely makes the triumph of the scene not as big.
