  • Make your life as a goalie easier with a proper overlap. Skate placement is everything with this goalie technique. Push past the post to cover the net, if you skate hits the post, the second you butterfly you open up the net and are forced to be perfect with your glove hand. Make your life easy... use the overlap.

This overlap thing is certainly gaining credibility amongst coaches at all levels, but I still have trouble wrapping my head around it. It seems like all it would take is a well-timed fake shot, followed by a wraparound, and there’d be no chance in hell for the goalie to reacquire their post and get to the other side. I don’t get why this isn’t addressed in any videos….

No need for overlap, as you expose the net more, and getting back to other side is impossible

Agreed. And that's what the RVH is for now

Wrong. Overlap at an angle like that is perfectly valid. RVH isn't perfect either, you're still exposed above the shoulder, and it takes longer to get square and on angle with depth to a pass to the slot. With overlap you're already on your feet, so rotate T-push and you're fine. Another option would be the VH as it protects the top more on the glove side, and you can move a bit faster than in RVH. Unless the puck in behind the goalline I wouldn't use RVH, even in the Pie.

@@randovidupload9422 - Played mostly standup for 30 years, I would say as long as your shoulders are square to the shooter, anything should work just fine.
Too many youngsters are taught that have to go down on your knees to make any sort of save...I say always play standup as much as possible first, then one can transition to RVH,VH, or knee saves. There is no wrong or right way, as long as you can be in position to make multiple saves if need be...the first one is usually the easiest..
