You can think of Panda as Outside the Post RVH, so same idea, but you’re at a “better” depth, so less likely to be sniped top cheeeeese. That’s not though how I teach it, that’s my opinion based on this video. How I explain it is: as the player approaches the goal line his net “window” is shrinking, picture the net at center vs FO Dot vs one step above goal line, the “hole” of the net shrinks as the angle increases. Bc of that we needn’t square our shoulders to the shooter. Why wouldn’t we? We wouldn’t if there is a plausible pass threat. As F1 drives wide and low, we allow the up-ice skate to float “under-square” (facing more Up-ice), the upper body stays square(ish) to F1. If F1 shoots, it is very simple to rotate into that shot fully w/upper body and 1/2 Bfly with pads, eyes/chin over stick easy deflect to corner if on ice, body seals post bc it’s a 1/2 overlap, and we’ve stayed tall bc we’re over our knee (unlike a toe-lock RVH which means collapsing over our knee and thus losing height!). IF F1 passes, or you mis-play rebound and F2 is a threat in slot, you’re already 1/2 squared up-ice with lower body, and push left is already loaded, so uncoil at waist and easy push, slide to center on-angle, and bc you are slightly ahead of their game depth too! It’s actually pretty brilliant, but lacks good PR. Like a better name. I like SuS (Short-side Under-square). 😂
