    I participated in Red Bull Crashed Ice Quebec in 2009. Nothing prepares your for skating on slopes. Huge respect for the athletes that compete regularly in the Red Bull Crashed Ice events. Being a good skater doesn't have any correlation to staying on your feet. It was an amazing experience and I definitely utilized the Crashed portion when competing.

    This is foreign territory for any hockey player a completely unique animal. Only thing remotely close to this that I've done is downhill and then you are landing on at least 3" wide skis and not sheer ice.

    • @HockeyTutorialOfficial

      Completely agree. Especially with the words on “for any hockey player” it was so hard! So much credit to the athletes that do this daily. It’s another level. Easy for people to criticise who have never been on a real RedBull track. The thing is a monster.

    This looks like being a skateboarder/snowboarder would pay off. I know it's different dynamic as you are going forward not side to side, but leaning into the drop is how you transition. I play hockey, and I snowboard/skateboard. I've been in half pipes and transitions. Not saying I could do this, but I would give it a go, and not have a crazy amount of fear.

  • @donniejean

  • @BLACK3737
    @BLACK3737 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I think the major problem they have is caused by the fact, that hockey has horizontal oriented environment. To avoid falling down on the ice, they should lean towards the slope. I experienced the same, years ago, learning how to use half pipe while being on my rolleskates. When you are on the top, you have to lean forward, otherwise you land on your butt, I think its very similar here. Leaning towards the edge is against your body balance, and routine, because mostly your body recognize that as a painful fall, which is about to happen. I remember that overcoming your fear was the hardest thing to do before i successfully learned the trick.

      Skating on flat land and dropping into a ramp are two different things completely. Completely different physics. I aggressive bladed back in the day and play roller and ice hockey and jam skate, even snow board
      None of the skills carry over, hell even ice to roller you have to untrain your glide and shuffling as a goalie which would make the most seasoned pro feel a bit slow....
      This sport is NOT hockey and uses very little hockey skills....
      I can guarantee if i ever get the chance to go down crashed ice tracks even with my vert and street coarse background i would look like a rookie, and I've been skating since i could stand up, 30+ years....

      @@greysongladney4403 Actually if you are a great (like actually great) skater on flat ice, it helps you a ton. But you still have 60-70% to learn about how to ride that track. @@Kasposs you gotta also have balls and good balance and be able to adjust it. It's more like skateboarding.

    Competitive hockey pretty much my whole life. Its just like anything else, you get used to it and gradually get better and better with practice. One thing I will say/type is, I think the guys in the video spent too much time over thinking it. Its really NOT thattttt hard. Don't psyche yourselves out lol. Just take it easy and have fun with it. During actual races you don't have any time to slow down and freak yourselves out, you just GO FOR IT! That's what makes it work. There's not much that can really happen on that track anyways. It looks pretty safe. Fun vid tnx for sharing it.

      @@HockeyTutorialOfficial oh I bet it was a ton of fun and a great experience you'll never forget.
      Do the skaters run typical radius and profiles or do they do so something different to get the grip they need. I'm thinking if its standard they're running FBV or the A shaped one.
      Also noticed a lot of the athletes this year were wearing a strap around their ankles across they laces. What is that?

    I am curious to know if someone who is a decent ice skater who also has a background in some other extreme sport involving ramps would do better. Hockey players are great skaters but most likely don't understand the basics of a ramp, with leaning forward and just being used to ramps like a skateboarder or bike rider. Or maybe it's a whole different thing idk just a thought.
