So, are 911s right now as cheap as they will ever get? In all likelihood no. But the price development during last year shows that this market is incredibly strong. When it comes to the 991 and 992, we saw large price drops in the second half of 2022, but relatively stable prices throughout 2023. Instead of selling slower, cars are selling quicker again and unsold inventory is discounted less than at the same last year.
When it comes to the older generations, and especially the 996, we saw that it was almost immune to the market correction. In two years’ time, a car that was not driven only lost 4.5% or 1.4k. A sudden crash in 996 values seems then also unlikely to me.

I believe so, particularly in the base and S cars (since these are usually the entry points for upper middle class buyers), imo, if macro economic forecasts playout in H2 of 2024 as some are predicting.

Yes. It is coming. The market is coming back to reality across the board. Porsche dealers are even offering discounts off sticker again. These folks that bough all the over priced Turbos and other models are trying to get out as many are upside down on the value. I am seeing older 996 Turbos even selling in the 40k range already. Will we see the old 996 Carrera 2s come into the 10k range with a bunch of miles? I think so. Especially with a ton of mileage. The low miles ones - no. But it's insane to be paying $20-40k for Carrera 2 and 4 models with 100k on them. Especially with all the expensive issues these 20+ year old cars have. Even parts are coming down...

I bought a 991.2 in May 2022. Maybe I paid too much But whatever the premium over “normal” well I’ve enjoyed every minute. People spend money on vacations and don’t bemoan the 100% “depreciation” lost once your vacation is a memory. A 911 is a vacation every day.

People would blow thousands or even tens of thousands on trip to a different city so that they can look at some buildings and eat at a different restaurant and call that “I LivE fOr eXpeRiEncEs”. Same would call you financially irresponsible or worse for buying a 911 instead of a used Honda.

In the US the dealer inventory is overflowing with Macans, Cayennes and Taycans so the "supply-chain" excuse for limited 911 supply is no longer valid as most of the suppliers are the same across the model line. However, there is also a glut of used 911's out there as well and they are not selling as most sellers are trying to hold at above-msrp asking prices. At this point, it seems that the pricing is based on pride vs. reality.

@@user-po2zh5rd1z That will be true of base or S models with PDK that don't have some of the extras that core Porsche people expect like Sport Chrono or 14-way / 18-way seats, deviated stitching, etc. Also still a glut of black, silver and gray models. I know a car that's yellow or shark/Miami Blue may not have mass popularity, but they will get snapped up by those that want to stand out.
I have had my eye on three different 991.2 turbo S’ at different dealerships in California. Two of them are racing yellow which is a color I like, both of these racing yellow turbo S’ have been at the dealership for more than six months. The other one has been at the dealership for three months last I checked which was an early January. Two of the dealerships have been playing games with the price, lowering it by up to $10,000, then raising it back up $8000, even up to $12,000 making the price higher than it ever was.

Recent BAT results show quite a few 911s selling for what I would consider normal depreciation. The last two months was about a 5% drop. Special (CXX) and limited 911s obviously held better but still came down. I believe they will continue too. 996s are pretty steady recently tho

Appreciate the follow up! I bought about 4-5 months ago. The trends have largely followed my expectations; drop after COVID, then flat, due to people trying to buy the last of the fun ICE cars. These cars won't be made again, and people know it, so they're buying and holding; the more analog, the better.

I am seeing a lot of used 911's on the market right now from 991 to 992's. There are literally over 300 units in Canada and prices has come down but I think prices will continue to drop some more. This is more like a correction from the crazy jacked up price during COVID. But overall it is still higher than normal pricing if COVID didn't happen.
My sense in the Uk is that high interest rates are biting and behind some of the recent price reductions.
PCP rates are at 10%+. On a £200k car that’s ALOT!
Great video! Thanks for the update. I'm not sure I completely agree with your assessment though. I'm seeing 911s in my area (Toronto) linger a long time on the market and prices are coming down. It's a total guess but I think any stall in price decreases might be temporary and the equivalent to a bear market bounce, and that after a pause, the market will continue to fall. Prices are still just far too high (a lot of 5-10+ year old Porsches selling near MSRP) and there's nothing to support current levels (the economy is slowing, interest rates are quite high (7-10%!), inventory is growing, Porsche dealerships are quickly burning through their waiting lists, ...). Either way, it will be interesting to see what happens over the next 18 months!
Except with the 2008-2011 recession (one of the few where moneyed people took a big hit and 997.2/ 987.2 models took sales hits as a result), Porsche customers are rather immune to economic downturns. I've just been lucky over the years, there are always engineering contracts to go after.

I have one. I think the T's are (relatively low-priced) unicorns. I heard the 991 T models were somewhat difficult to unload (less equipment, more $$), but the 992 T is unique in that it's the only way you can get a manual transmission with the base engine. Nor are some of the standard T features like PTV, limited slip differential or Sport PASM (lowered 10 mm below standard PASM) even available as options on the base model - and they cost extra on the S models as do the cloth seats, grayed-out wheels, etc. And the back seat delete on the T doesn't happen on anything but the GT3 or S/T models (not sure if the GTS lightweight package deletes the rear seat), though I optioned the rear seat back in on mine.
Would be very curious of the depreciation difference between a 911 coupe, Cabrio, Targa , Turbo and also the limited edition models such as GT3, GT3 RS or Turbo S exclusive models.

Bought a 991.1 Carrera S manual. Last Naturaly Aspirated 911 not in the pure GT line. Only minus is the not so great steering but offset by the pluses. Good buy.

Something important to point out is that the 911 has an exceptional profit margin for Porsche. As you have pointed out, new car supply has capitulated since 2022. However, the yearly price hikes have been eye-wateringly high, with a $20-$50k price hike coming for the 992.2. It seems like the strategy is to prop up the used market by reducing supply and increasing the cost per unit of new 911s.

thats crazy because it defeats the purpose of porsche and people calling it an amazing car for its value now it will just be an expensive sports car. As it can’t compete with lambos and mclarens but the top end cars compete with the 750s and huracans

@@barbarusbloodshed6347 You'd think that, logically. But Porsche customers are not logical and will pay to get into the club (but maybe not for a Macan or Taycan or the 718 with a turbo 4). For example, I have (for my work vehicle allowance) a $32k Subaru Crosstrek Sport with deviated stitching, sunroof and 10-way power seats , none of which my 992 T (4 times the price) has (although it has other things of course). And the Subie can go where the $180k+ 911 Dakars go, though maybe not as fast.
@@Aaronozard I've been fortunate in that I'd done business with my Porsche dealer for 15 years. Newcomers, unless they are buying Macans, are not getting treated that well as I understand. Which is on par with Ferrari where they steer the new customers into a used model.
Hopefully a bit of a discount when the facelift comes. I miss the days of discounts on 911s that were on the lot.

I think the title better represents buy a "new one" now, as Porsche is planning to up their MSRP by $20-50k across the board. As for used cars, I don't see the urgency, even based on what you present here. Thanks for putting this together however, I appreciate your diligence and presentation. Big fan of the channel! I predict that the MSRP for a new GT3 will go from $182k US to $210k US by the time the 992.2 rolls out.
The base MSRP's already jumped by $8K-$10k on June 1 with no apparent downturn in sales. i think one difference is there have been fewer ADM's (except for the GTs and Turbos and maybe Targas). And from my experiece I know the waits for new orders are definitely shorter than they were 2 years ago - I don't know if allocations are "normal" (ie pre-pandemic) and you rarely find a brand new 911 "in stock", but it's not quite as bonkers as it was in 2022 when I had friends waiting 12-18 months (or more) for 911s or Cayman GTS 4.0s.

Most of the time there is no difference so i am not going through all the splits unless it is evident that the trends are deviating from each other (eg manual/automatic Ferrari 360s)
Looking at local discounting in Australia the discounting is 10 to 20% on original price to current price

The Cayman is a really good car because of its midengine, but why produce a design like this when the weight can be designed in the floor. Why would an eCayman make sense?
@@bitc0inlightningrules423 I am guessing the eCayman is facing a delay and/or Porsche is hedging their bets and they will continue to build (side by side with the eCayman/eBoxster) the fairly old-generation 718 for a while - which is basically a refresh of the early-2010a 981 notwithstanding the Turbo 4 in the base and S models.

The 911 is a brilliant car at $100K and absolutely outclassed at $300K. The exception is the GT3 / RS products, but you’re talking about a GTS.
I struggle to see how you could come to the conclusion that any standard 911 is better than “most” $300K cars.
New, you’re competing with the McLaren Artura & 750S, Lamborghini Huracan Tecnica, Ferrari Roma and 296 GTB, Aston Martin DB12, DBS & V12 Vantage, the highest spec’d R8 known to man, even the Mustang Dark Horse now.
Used, the gap gets even wider. You can buy a mint Ferrari F12 for $230K. One of the greatest cars of our generation. I just don’t see how that compares to a standard 911.

theres about 160 used 992 gt3s in the USA alone right now. too much speculation. prices seem to be going down. the days of 300k 992 gt3s seems to be done.
When do you guys think that things will be start coming back to normal in the second hand market for normal 911's? I mean... Due to the crap doing on the market now we still need to pay 50% MSRP to get a 8-10 year old one.... Back in the normal days 50% of MSRP got you a 4-5 year old one!

As Porsche begins going tree hugging will be interesting to see values of N/A ICE motors in the 911, Boxster, Cayman range.
My take is the newer 991s and 992s will keep slipping by 2 to 3% YoY, while the older 996s and 997s will increase 2 to 3%. In 5 years 80k can get you a great low mileage 996 C4S or good used 992 S.
996 for 80k???? Try 75-65k. I see a 992 being 80ish in 3 or 4 years though.
There is a ceiling to what a 911 is worth. My buddy just bought a Ferrari 458 instead of a new 992 Carrera S because it’s an objectively better car, for roughly the same money (once options are added).
He had been planning to buy a 911 for years, but the price to value ratio is starting to not make sense for the 911, given what you can now get for the same money.
This is interesting to me because it’s somewhat independent of macroeconomic factors and Porsche’s supply levels. If the car isn’t worth it, it just isn’t worth it. Porsche is pushing closer and closer toward that price discovery ceiling.
I wonder if the 911 is approaching a breaking point, given they’re expecting to increase the MSRP by $20-50K for the 992.2.
There is a ton of hype around the 911, and IMO that’s what’s sustaining these prices. But that hype is predicated on the 911 being a good value for money, and thus becoming a darling of car enthusiasts - who are tastemakers for the broader consumer base. If that changes and the hype dies down, we’ll start seeing people evaluate the 911 for what it actually is: a brilliant car, but absolutely not a Ferrari 458 - and thus not worthy of those values.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the next 6-12 months.

I got a T for $132k with manual and a couple options like electric folding mirrors, Bose, heated steering wheel, and funky shark blue seat belts - if you keep away from all the deviated stitching and leather options and paint-to-sample (all of which are tempting), but get the basic premium package, Bose, sport chrono and the 20-21" S wheels, I think you can do it for $130k.

Indeed, the difference between the base and S usually gets smaller over time.
@@fourwheeltrader Makes sense. Over time, both the base and the S will be considered "slow" compared to newer, faster cars. What difference does S power make, when both are nearly equally slow next to the latest models?
@@dBsdecibelsgood point. I have a 987.2 base Cayman and the base .2s had an almost equivalent 0-60 as the .1 S.
Given that hybridization is coming for 992.2 911’s, I’d say that this logic will no longer apply. We won’t see any development going into ICE technology and there won’t be the year over year gains we’ve become accustomed to. I’d say this is it for the ICE 911 (other than base and GT line) so get a 1) Manual, and 2) the best badge you can afford (GTS, Turbo, etc).
@@fourwheeltrader Interesting! Because I remember when you were looking at Boxster and Cayman prices about a year or so ago, around the time I was getting ready to sell my 718 Boxster S. I recall the used 981s seemed to have a fairly sizable gap between base and S models, though it was smaller with the used 718s. In retrospect I only got the 718 S over the base in 2017 because they had an S in stock similar to the base model I was going to order and I got (!!!) an 8% discount, which basically made up for the $8k price differential between my prospective order and the in-stock S model - the basic difference being big red brakes and 50 hp more in the S.
All 911's seem to be treated like unicorns on the market, not just the crazy GT and Turbo S models. I got a new Carrera T in September. I'm guessing it's even more of a unicorn than a base or an S.
I completely agree with this video. Porsche won't produce many 911s because their profits come from SUVs and sedans. Wait until this spring when the Fed adjusts the interest rate. These 911s will increase in value again.

There is zero rush to by any car at the moment, other than maybe a Tesla. Very rarely are cars an “investment”. The holding costs are very high and the financing isn’t getting any easier.
Teslas are doing well because Elon brought prices down to more than make up for not being eligible to get the government EV rebates anymore. Plus the Tesla-proprietary EV charging infrastructure is far better than that for non-Tesla compatible EVs. Of course most Tesla owners charge their cars overnight at home.

I have just sold my very good condition 991.1 base (90 000km) for 49 000usd. It took me a year. I see all other cars selling, and they are not so lucky. It is crazy how overpriced 911 become in last 2-3 years.
That;s like a 10year old car.... That's half of it's original MSRP. 50% MSRP used to be for 4-5Year old car.... It's crazy... Wondering when those days will the 50% MSRP days will come back.

Please evaluate the following:
I am particularly interested in the 2023 911 Turbo S Cabriolet which I have been following for the last 9 months and have to say that the 2021 through 2023 prices are significantly above their original MSRP...I mean insanely higher. Why? I ended up buying a 2023 for $40k over MSRP which is about where the whole US market is right now. 2024s are almost impossible to get and the blame keeps being on chip shortages and the end of Ukraine made wire harness . This will be my last Porsche. Don't get me wrong...I'll enjoy it fully but am still astonished at the pricing and suspect Biden has at least something to do with it.

911 prices will continue to decline. The 911 is completely overpriced after 3 years of price hikes from Porsche. Other than the GT cars, the 911 is a boring car at slower speeds. Personally I like the look but to the average person who is not into cars it doesn’t turn heads.
People got completely delusional between Covid and EV mandates (that aren’t going to happen) the last 3 years. Throw out the last 3 years when predicting 911 prices. Prior to the last 3 years, you buy a new (non GT) 911 and it would depreciate 35% in 3 years.
I bought a new 992 C2S in 2021 and got a $5k discount on it. My C2S was $135k new and that same build would be about $150k now. It’s not a $150k car and in my opinion was overpriced even at $135k.
Waiting over a year for a new 911 is a joke. Porsche will eventually realize they need to fix that or lose customers. The 911 by far has the highest profit margin for Porsche. They will fix the problem when the well starts to run dry. In 2 years you’ll be able to walk into a dealership and buy one off the lot with a small discount just like you could 4 years ago.
i waited 2 years with thousands down for gt3 allocation. they gave my money back and ghosted me. prob lost customer forever. I agree gt products are only compelling thing. I've driven c4s and its a nice car, but not worth 5x the price of my daily model 3 performance which is just about as quick. of course its not as "fun" but value is amazing.
Concur, I joined waitlist March 2021, 28 months later I was offered an "allocation" however the price for exact same config increased 32K Cad ( with luxury tax). I declined because only people with money to burn can afford new 911's
It’s nice to hear that there are people out there that see the 911 for what it is. It’s a nice car that is way overpriced. Porsche has become so arrogant but their downfall will be electrifying the Macan, Boxster, and Cayman. Unless they can compete with Tesla in price and range, they will fall flat on their face.
For my situation (I live in 2 different places 11 hours apart), a plug in hybrid has worked out great. Picked up a BMW X5 50e and love it. Ordinarily I’d be ecstatic that Porsche is bringing out a 911 hybrid but it’s going to be so insanely overpriced I’m not even tempted to inquire about it.
Porsche has decided to cater to only those with unlimited funds and have alienated true car fans. It’s a them problem and not a me problem though, there are too many other good cars out there to waste my time worrying about Porsche.

In general I agree the crash will be profound, but will the Porsche market be more resilient? I would love to pick up a heavily discounted 991.2 Carrera T if the market crashes, but I’m not banking on it.

Too many changes which will reduce the 911 DNA are likely. Fully digital dash, ignition push button, less loud again due to regulation and there is some kind of electrification in the drivetrain expected. For me personally, these are dealbreakers.

Interesting....all of this effort to attempt to predict where 911 prices are going?? If it was redirected to the stock market, you might do as well as my B-School classmate. Not sure if he drives a 911, but he spent less than 5% of his net worth to buy the Carolina Panthers. Or looking at it another way, assuming the average 911 (including GT cars) sold for $175,000 in 2022, he could have purchased all 10,204 sold in the USA in 2022 for about 10% of his net worth. Think about that when you are racking your brain and calculator trying to figure out if you can afford just one 911.
I love your content but your title seems dishonest and you should not have to stoop to that level when your content is of such a high quality
Why do you think that? The title states that you should act now and poses the question if the 911 is as cheap as it will ever be and if you should buy it. The video opens with this question and answers it. Conclusion, in all likelihood no, but you need to act now and start monitoring the prices.
