This is one of my worries about joining the PCA. I just placed an order for a 718 Cayman. Am I going to be looked down upon because it's "Only a Cayman"?
I would add one more. The Porsche Snob. This is usually the rich guy who owns one of the newest, most expensive cars and looks down on anyone who doesn't own a car that costs over $150k. They also typically know very little about the brand or its history. I've owned 5 different Porsches and the most I've ever paid for one is $38k. If it has a Porsche badge on it, it's a Porsche.
Will, indeed many of us who appreciate the excellence built into our cars, also appreciate quality watches and buy according to our budgets. Both bring us the joy of beautiful things we can touch and use. It’s about a sense of balance, being grateful we own and enjoy a car(s) that’s so fun to drive and look at. After all, we’re talking about our playgrounds in life. Thanks again. 👍🏼🙏🏼.
I completely agree with this comment. It’s about the driver and the drivers personal experience. Yes, I just sold my 1992 964 to buy a 2016 981 GTS and couldn’t be happier! I don’t care about the appreciation, depreciation or what the community covets. It’s about what each owner wants and how they want to spend their windshield time. Great video, Will.
I am 75 years old with advanced arthritis. As much as I love the 911, it simply became too difficult for me to get in and out of it. So, I opted to stay with the Porsche brand and now drive a Cayenne S. Yeah, I know just thinking about driving a SUV is definitely frowned upon. I have been told by other Porsche owners that the Cayenne is not a real Porsche and they wouldn’t be caught dead in one. I get it. But, sooner or later, old age will come and you are forced to compromise.
I’ve owned a lot of Pcars in my life time. 944s, 968s, 928s, 3.2 Carreras, 356, 997, 987 Boxster. I just picked up a 2017 cayenne GTS a couple of weeks ago. I never thought about the SUVs much but needed a new family car. I absolutely love it. It is an amazing vehicle and very much a Porsche experience. I bought my wife a boxster tip 987, I find the tip with convertible a very wonderful car in heavy traffic or city driving at my age of 46. I still prefer a manual as I live out in a rural area, but at some point I won’t be able to drive them anymore like you said. I’ll still be rolling in a Cayenne for sure. Just enjoy it!
I too am 75. I respect your decision. I still slide under my cars many times each week, as I maintain and restore them, but hope to stay in the hobby when my mobility declines. ;-)
The Cayenne is an awesome vehicle and without its release Porsche was in serious trouble. Look at how that decision changed the automotive world. Every high end car brand has one now with Ferrari last to the dance. Great choice @royfrye333
Don’t get it twisted you can mod that thing and make it move good for you You’ve got more 911 miles under your belt then most of use poor folk could ever dream of
I didn’t mention that I am 6’4”. I was fairly comfortable once I got settled in the seat of the 911 but getting back out of it after an hour or so became a real struggle. I still get stiff and have pain after an hour or so in the Cayenne but at least I can get out of it without too much trouble. I like the Cayenne but my wife’s Macan S is much more engaging to drive. She is only 5’2” and it fits her well. The only issue is she isn’t afraid to push it hard and she scares the hell out of me sometimes when I am the passenger. She is an excellent driver and has driven high performance cars all her life. She drove Corvette’s for many years.
@@PointNemo9 You do realize that the original 356 and VW bug were way more similar mechanically than most folks want to believe, and even though I currently have a 991.2 GT3, I club raced a 968 for 14 years and smoked a ton of air cooled 911's on track with it.
@@mikevadvilavich1414 The VW Beetle was designed by Porsche (the man, not the company), so that's to be expected. Porsche was a very young company at the time, so it's not surprising if they had humble beginnings. What does the 968 have to do with anything? It's a very different car to the 924 (as was the 944).
I really need to join the PCA. I never joined because of stereotypes of guys in car clubs. Now, I've turned the big 50, I'm finding out that I most likely missed out on a lot of fun and meeting great people.
You have definitely missed out on the great experience of meeting people that are as passionate as you are. I’ve a meme we of several clubs including PCA. I bring my wife on events and some I don’t. No matter the event you will end your day meeting great people and drive with a smile on your face all the way home! 👍
Have been a PCA member for 10 years , while I have not been super active in my community ( zone). What I have done in terms of events and races has been alot of fun! You can be as active as you want and there is a variety of types of events for every enthusiast. From dinnner and breakfast gatherings to DE and club racing at your regional track to Porscheplatz gathering at IMSA races . It truly is about the cars AND the friendly people you will meet. ( a great way to learn more about the brand and your own car as well). Enjoy. 🤗🏁
I would add: "The one that hates on the Cayenne and Macan" Without them Porsche would probably not exist today. And they still are tuned by Porsche engineers, have the Porsche build quality and are usually the sportiest in their class.
I’m an admin in one FB Porsche group and what you said is gospel! Thank you for finally putting a spotlight on this issue as Porsche groups proliferated over the last 5 years. I’m proud to say that our group is composed of very civilized Porsche owners but nevertheless, I will share this vid. 😊
I’m a newer Porsche enthusiast, have been the last 3 years. The brand impressed me so much not by their cars but how they treat people whether they are owners or not. A dramatic change from Ferrari, which has honestly gotten pretty annoying with their consistent attitudes. The Porsche Experience in ATL is a great gateway drug as well, and it enabled me to meet all of these types mentioned in the video in 3 days. It doesn’t matter which variant or model you have, just enjoy it.
Sage advice, Will. I’ve been on this planet for 74 years, so chances are pretty high I’ve been exposed to just about every degree of the good, bad and ugly when it comes to some of the folks you identified. While I truly believe the obnoxious snobs are far and away in the minority, they certainly exist. I have low tolerance for the ones that clearly make judgements about those around them based on how they might dress or the make or model vehicle they drive. First of all, I feel very fortunate to be able to own a Porsche. There are certainly many folks that would be very good stewards of the brand, but due to circumstances, may never be able to own one of our favorite vehicles. It never ceases to amaze me when I pull into a business, the degree of assistance I get is sometimes clearly related to what I may be driving that day. I remember pulling into a Toyota dealership in my 1995 pickup to look at a car for my wife. I was clearly sized up by the salesmen……and none of them wanted to give up their “up” on me. I apparently didn’t appear to be a likely candidate to be able to afford what they were selling. I couldn’t even get someone to give me a brochure ! I left. Just to confirm what I suspected, a few days later I stopped by the same dealer….only this time I was driving my 2023 911 Carrera. It was absolutely amazing….almost obscene. I was “mobbed” from every direction by sales reps before….BEFORE I could even get out of my car !!! I explained I was there to get some information on a car for my wife….oh….and I’d come by a couple of days ago……and no one would give me the time of day…..I was the guy in the old red truck. I just stopped by to let you know you may have screwed up…..since no one wanted to help me a few days ago, I bought her a new BMW. Thanks……and good day ! Don’t be that kind of person….someday it may even cost you your job !
I came to "my" Porsche dealership in Katowice, Poland back in 2018 in... parking 11 year old Toyota Camry hybrid in front of their windows. With dents here and there. I got fantastic customer service. Including appointment for 1 hour test drive with sales Manager the following week. So for that appointment I came in a taxi cab... got the 1 hour drive with the sales Manager. After which he ordered a taxi for me and got me a cup of coffee when waiting for it. I ordered new Cayman T from them after a few months. Racing Yellow (per their recommendation). I don't know how they train them but trust me, to get this level of customer service in Easter Europe when you actually look "kind of poor" at a Porsche dealership out of all places -- absolutely amazing. They treat everyone with respect. I haven't seen this level of customer service care when shopping for 911 in LA area, or Newport Beach. Nothing special there. Just OK. I don't think they would treat me seriously if I showed up in an old Camry. Guys in Porsche Katowice, Poland, I mean that's customer service worthy of the badge. To completed the picture I didn't dress up or anything too... they just care. I love it.
I absolutely LOVE my Boxster. I've driven 911's and the Boxster handles so much better. It is glued to the road. Still has a flat 6 and is a dream to drive.
I believe it’s important to be a fan of Porsche in general, not just YOUR Porsche. Bottom line is we all share the same passion, no matter which Porsche we own.
PCA members are the best, they guide, they share so much knowledge and have a great time. If it’s a Porsche, it doesn’t matter which one, all are beautiful, deserves equal respect.
I inherited a mint condition 944 from my late father-in-law. Sadly it’s NOT considered a Porsche by the “snobs”. Repair shops don’t want to touch it because “we only work on 911’s”. I enjoy driving my lowly 944 since it is one of the cars that helped save Porsche from bankruptcy.
@@eel-ce1ni I have enjoyed my “lowly” 944. I drive it a lot on the weekends and I enjoy what happens often like today: I park at the grocery store and two guys talk to me for an hour about my car and cars, and they told me about the weekend Cars & Coffee near me that they invited me to. I’ve done a lot of simple fix-its to my car but I leave major work to the Porsche shop.
A 1985 Guards Red 944 was the first Porsche I had ever ridden in. It was new and owned by a high school buddy of mine tgat i went to school with. It is what first got me interested in the brand. Always a special place for that model. Enjoy it. May it bring you endless fun memories.
Great video Will, how about a video on the type of Porsche Owner one should strive to be? I recently had a young man (maybe 18yr) notice my 79' 911 when I got home and opened the garage door, he saw me in the yard with my dog and came over to ask me about the car and then asked if he could see it, long story short, I took him for a drive and he was extremely appreciative, no doubt he'll remember that for a long time, I know I did when I was his age. I try to be as accommodating as possible hoping to ignite new Porsche enthusiast as often as possible.
I really appreciate you doing this. I am a lifelong Porsche dreamer and after 49 years I finally jumped in this year and bought my first one. An absolutely perfect ,White 1989 911 Carerra that I am in love with. I was extremely nervous about getting into the Porsche life for fear of many of the things you referenced in this video. The car is so pristine I have been skittish about driving it as much as I know that I should. That's the whole point, right?! So, I am driving it a ton more, taking it to shows, talking to other Porsche owners and learning as much as I can about it. I really enjoy your take and love your videos. Thanks again for sharing what you've learned because us newbies are eating it up!
Hello from Mexico City. '89 white 911 Carrera is exactly how I would get mine. I bet it's beautiful. Very happy for you. Enjoy it, with your closest ones. Bests! Eduardo
You bought a gem , one of the long life cars made from 1978-‘89 that are not only fun to drive but have a very strong drivetrain . Your car has the reliable DME Motronic engine controller first introduced in the 1984 Carrera .
I went to my first PCA dinner as a 28 yo and was definitely intimidated by the existing members. But I was very positively surprised that nobody looked down on me for having a Boxster S. Instead the mostly 911 crew had only nice things to say about it. Then I went to an autocross and again expected snobbery. Again I was shocked. What I found is that Pcar guys are very realistic and knowledgeable about the different platforms and it’s far different than the world at large. You will meet people who may have gone to their first event thinking they have the most expensive therefore best porsche but then they see “oh there are 8 different Boxsters ahead of the fastest Turbo.” These cars are legit.
Lots of comments here, so apology if someone else mentioned this. It really bugs me when I ask for assistance with a problem and the ‘purists’ come of the woodwork to shame me that the dealership is the only right answer to what I am seeking help with. I’ve worked on my cars for years, I’ve got a lift in my garage and I am very confident in my abilities.
I’m an Audi enthusiast. My son who’s 7 is 100% in love with Porsche. He’s loves to sit on the couch in the mornings and watch RWB builds. With his passion and my desire to share the hobby with him I’ll be getting a 930 at some point in 2024.
I've always loved the 914 and the story behind it being a joint project between VW and Porsche but turning out so great that Porsche didn't want to share the platform with VW, whether it's true or not, it was still an amazing little car that you could drive hard. I owned several Karmann Ghias, and have driven a few 914's but never bought one because I was always holding out for a 912 instead. But every 912 I almost bought slipped through my fingers. Now, 912's are stupid expensive rust buckets, and the last one I drove felt like a death trap. Anyway 914's are too rare to drive every day now so I bought an old boxster. I hope you get to keep your little gem forever!
Great video and your examples were all dead on. But I do think you missed one of the bigger ones. Don't be the guy who looks down at other Porsche owners because they don't a 911!
Good video, Will. I like all your comments. I live in a small city in eastern Canada 🇨🇦. Our P car community is smaller a widely varied - in terms of cars, budgets and ages. Your comments about community I think are paramount. We are all trying to enjoy the cars we have and enjoy the people that we share this great hobby with. Love to get down to North Carolina sometime. Btw, love you G body 911. That’s one of the cars I have. Cheers 🍻
2006 boxster S , and 100 % stock! Why touch a master piece! Only added , grateful dead, U Hawaii, etc. stickers inside front and rear trunk lid hatch. Aloha from Hawaii! Top down, yearound!
I would say a more concise list would be “Be like Will.” Positive Helpful Appreciative Open to learning and sharing Thanks for all of your great content. More than anyone, you are the person who helped shepherd me through my 911 journey.
Great video, would like to add one more..... the car enthusiast who looks down on other car makes. I've done a load of BMW trackdays and those guys always look down at my 997 to the point where the guy who runs it, Mr N, never recognises me and says hello even though I've done 20+ days!!
Well done and I think you are on point with all of them. I would add one more. Porsche owners, more than any other enthusiast group I have encountered are quite myopic with regards to other brands. I collect several brands including Porsche (I have 4). They are all tools that serve a purpose and provide a tremendous amount of enjoyment to me. Unfortunately, many Porsche guys will never know that there is enjoyment in other brands AND they are also worthy of ownership.
Great video and a nice reminder that we all just need to be nice to each other. For me, contentment is the key to this hobby. Love what you have and make good friends. It's as easy as that.
Just coming across this channel, appreciating your vibes. I'm very early on in my "Porsche Journey" aka the "dreaming stage". Have loved cars my whole life, but only recently have had the financial means to take a serious plunge. Glad the Porsche community is so robust, big reason why I want to be a part of the culture.
Funny; I share your name and your enthusiasm for Porsche. I’ve wanted a 911 since I was 10 and had a chance to drive one (closed space, instructor moderated.) but have never been able to afford one. So I was ecstatic when I became the proud owner of the local Porsche shop owners 914 shop runabout. I really tried hard to be a volunteer so I could participate in Treffen when it was to be held in my PCA region, but the snob factor set in and prevented me from even volunteering without participation. All I wanted to do was go drive with all the other Porsches. PCA really seems to be a snobbish pay to play pomp & circumstance bunch of bigots. I only keep my members current for the magazine. If you’re interested in having a more positive group, perhaps voting more inclusive presidents to the regions or pulling in the lesser able dedicated Porsche enthusiasts into the fold would be a good start. Thanks for your enthusiasm and your videos, the help keep my hopes alive.
Will’s analysis of the seven types is spot-on. Summary: be a gentleman. A great example of a gentleman is William McCraven - calm yet powerful. Cheers from Round Rock, TX
Thanks for the support and for watching. I think this culture - like any culture - has different personalities and in the Porsche world especially it seems like there are some drama queens with big egos. 😄 I’m quirky myself so I don’t want to sit here and act like I’m perfect but I do try to do no harm and to share my excitement about the cars with others.
@@Rennthusiast You do a great job on your channel. I enjoy the types of topics and the manner in which you present the topics. Been with you since ‘19 and am looking forward to the future.
@tjm3roundrock yes, I always remember your name bc you’ve been around and supportive for a long time. Thank you for the support. As the channel is growing there are more random haters that I find entertaining (which is actually a good sign for the expansion of the reach) but it’s always good to hear from the OG guys.
As a long term Porsche owner, PCA member, and Porsche DE track advocate, I admire your efforts to describe the 7 Types of Porsche owners. I was invited to speak at a PCA event about brakes by my oldest Porsche pal Mark Taylor who now leads marketing at Stoddards Porsche parts in OH. As a long term brake guy, I helped Mark on his Porsche race car. He knew I had most of the NASCAR, IndyCar, and IMSA teams on. my brakes. Many regional PCA clubs have guest speakers who may be able to improve your Porsche fun factor. Enjoy your Porsche journey. If you can, go to tour the factory at Zuffenhausen. Book you tour early as it gets sold out many weeks in advance.
Great video! 997.1 C2 base manual owner. I've only been in the hobby for a little over 2 years. I drive and hang with members from 2 different PCA regions because of where I'm located. I'd say at least 90% of the enthusiasts I've encountered have bent over backwards to be friendly and welcoming. Porsche people are good people. I have encountered a few of the 'over enthusiastic driver' types. Even they were very cool on a one on one level. Although I felt like needed a shot of bourbon after a few of those drives.
Good video. I'm not only a Porsche guy but basically just a car guy. I'll talk to anyone about cars and driving and road trips and modifications and whatever but what I really don't want to talk or read about all the time is value and valuation. It's worth what you'll pay for it or what you sell it for.
Well done as always, Will. I'd just add...don't be the deviated stitching guy! In full disclosure, I have it in my Carrera but it is never a conversation topic.
Good list Will. I have found myself interjecting when a newbie is sharing their excitement for their first or new Porsche and some just attack their choice instead of just welcoming them to insure them that they do not represent the Porsche community as a whole. I also have to confess that I inappropriately commuted on BaT on a ridiculously low mileage 993 questioning the state of the seals for something that had what I link was less than 100 mi. but regretted as I realized I did not want to be that guy.
Perfect list. I sold my 911S a long time ago, but I loved the car so much that I still keep up with the community. I´ve met most of the types on your list except for the on-line trolls. I don´t think they would learn from your video, but it entertains the rest of us.
There’s a wannabe troll in the comments below. The irony of some dude trying to “insult” me under this video of all videos isn’t lost on me 😂 Thanks for commenting and watching. 🙏🏼
There are 911S s and 911S s. Pre-74 and 74-77. I had a ‘75 and would never buy one again. Don’t know of the commentator but he said you can drive Porsches hard. You can, but then again the 74-77 era were like Harley’s of the era under AMF, they loved to warp and leak oil. On a hot summer Oklahoma day I drove mine easy, then it caught fire. Won’t buy into that dumpster fire again, so now I really enjoy my derided 914.
I think people are fed up with these cars being posted for $200,000 over MSRP. It weeds out the true enthusiast who can only afford the cars at MSRP. So I can see the frustration from people ripping on absurd sale posts.
I have to agree with you. Unfortunately, I felt the same way earlier this year when I participated in a club drive with our mint condition 944S2. Some people don’t seem to appreciate those of us who don’t wish to put all of our eggs in one basket.
These are all good points. Anytime I have researched help through forums looking for answers that I have not been able to find online, the most irritating people are the ones that ridicule you for simply asking a question. "Ever heard of Google" or "Stop posting in the wrong thread"
Really appreciate your comments on this topic. I’m a new P car owner and experienced some of the tings you’ve talked about. I’m in the process of buying another P car, maybe a GT car. But people are harsh when they aren’t the ones spending their hard earned money. Go figure.
Best video you’ve put out. Ive been waiting for this. You’ve come a long way from your Mexico blue brake calipers and tartan. Myself as well…(been there, done that). It is a journey and discovery. I’m an addict and I own way, way, way too many of these cars. Just can’t seem to part with any of them. Not sure if it’s a curse or addiction. Anyway… I never comment, only watch, but this is video is truly Porsche maturity. Sometimes you have to be taken by the hand and walked in a big, big circle to be dropped off where you started from to realize how special these cars are…just as they are. New or old… Great job. Now you have my attention and respect. Carry on
Great idea with this video. The guy who owns that 944 today, might be in a position to own a 930 tomorrow. Your journey analogy is spot on. Enthusiasts for these cars have more in common than not.
Love it! I own my second Porsche. It is a 997 Turbo tiptronic. The first one was a 997 carrera s Manual. I love manual but bought a 911 turbo tiptronic as a daily driver. I already found guys being rude about my car. That’s why I frankly don’t go to events anymore.
As a Cayman owner, I've had a few 911 owners give me some attitude. I try to push past it and find out more about their 911. One time at a PCA HPDE event, there was this 991 4S who after a couple laps of me behind him eventually gave me a point by. Ran into him in the classroom after the session, and he could not believe that a Cayman S was able to pass and pull away from his 911. He was dumbfounded, and I found it a little insulting. He was newer in that run group, and I was a little more experienced. He was actually a pretty nice guy. I enjoyed checking out his car, which was amazing and beautiful, and he was better about giving me point bys after.
I get it. I still can’t get many of my friends excited about the Cayman/Boxster platform. They’re missing out. My Spyder is possibly the most all around fun car I have.
Many years ago before I was a Porsche owner, I was a paramedic that was working at a track day for the Porsche club. Insurance reasons required us to be there. The owners were totally into their cars and would not give me nor my Paramedic partner the time of day. Was not a very good first impression. We did several track days over the years and it was always the same. Compared to the Ferrari club that came at another time, those owners treated us like gold, offered us lunch and even took us for a trip around the track in their Ferraris, I guess it’s the difference between old money and new money? I learned from that day long ago that I was not going to be a Porsche snob when i bought my Porsche.
Very well said. I have an order in on my very first Porsche 911 and I'm super excited but also somewhat nervous about the community. I hope they are as welcoming as the rest of the car community that I've been participating in locally but I know it is a different group.
Great video! The only one I identify with is not driving my car enough. I just wanted and worked for it for so long it pegs my OCD/anxiety meter when I drive it, or god forbid have to park it in a crowded parking lot.
Yes the Macan is definitely good enough to be your first Porsche. If it has a Porsche badge on the hood, it's good enough to be your first Porsche. Enjoy!
It is definitely good enough but I caution you that right after you get it you start dreaming about the next until you get the Cayman/911. The thrill the cars give you in the corners, vs the SUV, sets them apart. Maybe try an older Boxster/Cayman first to get the feel. The 718 is a beast.
I am a new kid on the block (14 months owner of 9 yr old 981 Boxster S). I encountered several of the types you mentioned in social media and in real life. A FB group for Porsche in Switzerland actually blocked me a few hours since I joined because I asked them where I can get a Porsche T-Shirt. Another event was when I dropped by a Porsche shop which specialises in aircooled 911s, they told me to go away because they don't do "modern" Boxsters. Another swiss FB group also blcoked me because I posted my questoins/commetns in ENGLISH. So yes, these stereotypes are REAL. And...I do try to be a GOOD owner and not a proud showoff. But I always get "mid life crisis" comments which are so sour grapes.
I’m new to Porsche, educating myself so I can try to make an intelligent purchase on a used 996. It will be my daily driver but as a retired person, I don’t drive as much as when I was a working person. I’ve always admired the brand & specifically 911’s since I got my drivers license at 16, & at 67 I plan on it being my forever car. I appreciate all of the info there is here on TH-cam & the online community & find that people are very generous with their experience & opinions.
Great comments and dead on. I live in AZ and we get a lot of people with $$$$ and come out to events to prove their wealth. Who cares how rich you are it’s about the car camaraderie and meeting new faces 👍
I'm in Phoenix, built my 996 joined PCA but honestly it's all guys twice my age who have brand new stock cars and host dinners to talk about watches that cost more than my car. I don't even feel good enough to go to any porsche events here I can relate to your comment 1000%
Some already said: I don’t want to be one that only considers 911 to be a Porsche. Are you? And it is not because I am in love with my flat 6 no turbo Cayman, all Porsches have their own personalities (I only have some serious struggles to accept electric…) 😉 I live in Northern Italy, but often come to upstate South Caroline and I would love to take my “creature” for a (safe) ride on the Blue Ridge Mountains!
True I am in to watches and currently own 13 Rolex, 5 AP and a Cartier. I have two ss Daytonas one with the black dial and one with a white dial! It’s interesting to know that people that collect watches and own Porsches are somewhat related. I definitely fall into that category.
Went to my first PCA meeting with my 996, just bought it, first Porsche and half of those there looked down their nose at me and made snide comments about the car and myself. Never went back to a meeting and I'm fine with it. BTW, I Do not care anymore what the "Airheads" say, my next 911 will be a 997.
I’ve loved Porsche since the age of 12. I Started building type 1 VW’s in my mid teens trying for what I thought a Porsche would be. I didn’t have a lot of money. 2 weeks ago my life long dream became a reality… I took delivery of my very own 2024 Cayman GTS 4.0. The entire experience exceeded my expectations by 1000x. I will always own a Porsche from now on :). That said, I love all Porsche cars. I don’t care if it’s a 928, 944, 924, 914, Cayman, or 911. They are epic! On the drive home from the dealership I took the car for a little rip on a back road I used to drive in my late teens. I had pulled over to grab a drink of water and just stare at the car. A young kid with his dad was walking by when they made a comment about how cool the car was. Looking at the kid and telling him, one day, you’ll have one to… it was hard for me to hold my tears back. Epic cars that make the ones who understand want to achieve more to enjoy these cars! Thanks for the video! I’m going to subscribe to your channel 👍.
This is a really powerful comment. I thank you for sharing and hearing this is part of the reason I started the channel….to hear from fellow Porsche enthusiasts. Congrats on achieving the dream!
I am on my 4th Porsche. I had two 911’s, a 987.1 Boxster S and a Cayenne S. I have loved them all. But my 2006 Boxster S is by far the best. It handles like a dream and corners like it is on rails. When I bought the Boxster in 2006 I had to make a choice between the 911 and the Boxster. I have always been a ragtop guy and really wanted a convertible. The 911 convertible model was not as pleasing as the Boxster. The rear end looked as if it had a growth on its back whereas the Boxster was sculpted. That was my deciding factor. To be honest I have never regretted my decision.
Great video Will, the positivity and message is great! The one that I think you missed is the Porsche scammer guy. Many of us know this individual from the north I am talking about and he is the all time worst. Taking advantage of 100s of people over the years. Thankfully the community has banded together and pushed back and gotten the word out about him.
Great video! Really like it you speak it out. One more I try to avoid is to show off and think that with a Porsche you do not need to take care of others on the road. I try to stop for every pedestrian who wants to cross and slow down behind bicycles, no speeding in the city. I do with my other cards as well, but many people look at Porsches different. So my motto is, „Porsche driver are always nice“- „Porsche Fahrer sind immer nett!“ That might end up on my car plate holder :-)
It’s funny after a lifetime spent enjoying 911s, my favorite was my first, a 1972 914. At the time I was a very young man and I enjoyed that car with all its anemia, it’s VW heritage, and it’s amazing go kart feel. I always longed for and fantasized about fancy, expensive, and faster cars but in retrospect that one I regularly washed, waxed, and drove with a big smile.
I’ve joined the local PCA chapter twice, about twenty years apart, and each time I send up leaving because of the hate for transaxle Porsches. I went back and looked at over a decade of the local magazine they put out, and they’ve never had a 944 on the cover. And it’s not for lack of trying. I sent them a beautiful picture of my Malvern Red ‘87 with a snow-covered mountain backdrop, and heard nothing back.
Teddy! Been following him for years, he was the first to introduce me to Sinn watches and I’ve been a collector ever since. Porsche is next, and I’m driving the heck out of a 991.1 when it arrives.
As a motorcyclist and Knoxville resident, I drive the Dragon, Cherohala, Blue Ridge and Foothills Parkways on weekends. However, because of cars on the Dragon I stay off that road for most of the season which cuts me off from easy access to the Cherohala. So I absolutely concur with your point on driving safely especially on the Dragon with its heavy traffic. It’s not a race track. I’ve seen two Ferraris miss a turn and get totaled this year. Fortunately no motorcycles were coming the from the opposite direction. Your points relate to so many “groups”.
I try to stay off the dragon, or at least when I do drive it I treat it as a leisurely segment of the drive. There are other desolate, untraveled roads in the western part of NC, east TN and north GA where you can have a bit more fun.
Like the list very much Will. Ive dipped out of the Porsche service world and gone back to teaching auto mechanics. Hope to catch you out in the real world next spring/summer in my 914 and sharing the the '75 Carrera refurb on the FB group. Will be starting that in January. See ya around, J.P.
Good video Will but it's more about people than Porsches and I agree with your take. I'm no Porsche aficianado nor even a petrolhead, 2 wheels rather than 4 have been my motoring over the last 50 years, but I sought out a 2nd hand 718 Boxster. I thought Porsches were drivers cars but in my search I found many with ridiculously low mileage for the year! And that brings me to your comments, some want to polish and bring out only on a sunny day, others want to drive big distances, live and let live. I've just returned from a 3,500 mile trip to Spain (live in England) and I love the Boxster so much it MAY end up replacing one of my bikes! 😬 Thanks 👍🏼
Totally agree Will! Nothing worse than someone judging you on where you’re at in the journey of owning a Porsche. This should be an exciting time for all. You shouldn’t have to be extremely wealthy to be a car enthusiast just excited around the content, the design, the drivability, and the people within the community. We should all respect one another.
***I apologize for the dissertation, something I’ve been called out for numerous times within the communities. I just wanted to share my thoughts. You’re not being judge mental whatsoever. This is VERY relevant and thank you for making this video. This is actually a topic that’s really been egging on my mind. Being a 24 year old, growing up in this day and age-is shocking and overwhelming how different the world is today vs 10-15 even 5 years ago. Car enthusiast communities are plague with who’s got the most money or “best” car. I’m not gonna give a newer person a hard time while they’re figuring out the strings, unless they’re being “that guy” with a 991.2 Touring or 992 GT3 and doesn’t know much else (bashes someone’s 996 Turbo because it’s “ugly”. or says someone’s base 991.1 is peasant spec and could really just care less about being a good contributor or conversing with others genuinely-but still wants to be in the communities??? I’ve been into these cars since I was 11 or 12. Just traded my first Porsche, a 19’ 718 6spd that had 8,200 mls in on an 09’ 997.2 PDK C2S with 54k mls. There are certainly some f-boys, both young and old in the scene now. The lack of empathy and support for other/newer and even knowledgeable more senior enthusiasts, blows my mind. So many people have come onto the scene with their first Porsche being any later post 997.2 gen variation of a GT3 or a Turbo S. Some of these people have zero respect or desire to just share like mindedness. Oh and the “flippers”…It’s so annoying seeing both individuals and “dealers” taking advantage of this post-covid and crypto infused world. Some individuals haven’t even owned one of these cars longer than 2-3 months. Because they got four, five, six 992s in their driveway and are continuously “connecting” people with a car. Not uncommon for individuals who clearly have some decent means, to post a new 992 “for sale” with only 80 miles or 150 miles. Whatever, they ask the community what they think it’s worth? Or is anyone interested in this car? Common sense, why would you buy it then? I see many dealer relationships not having this scenario with individuals buying special cars and instead, they get cars they keep and MAYBE drive for a little while at least. People think you can/should be able to buy these cars and flip them like they’re getting lucky with crypto. I’m sick of hearing the term “investment”. Don’t buy these cars with the mindset you’re going to make some money even $15k-$20k more than you paid for a new 992 GTS. That being said, like any reasonable or mindful enthusiast I’m not trying to get screwed and I want the car that’s going to treat me the best given whatever circumstances are surrounding it based on condition and desirability. (I’m not buying cars as investments, but I’d like to get into a car where I don’t have to worry about it taking a dive and potentially finding myself contemplating taking a huge >20% loss in no more than a couple years.) Also…some of these “dealers” scouting the BaT, PCM, nationwide inventory and scooping up hot cars for their inventory. Saw it happen near me, Porsche dealer got an 11’ or 12’ C2S cab 1-owner 1,900 miles. Asking under $72k. Ok that’s reasonable you’re paying for the experience of a new pristine 997.2 Well known dealer in the Northeast scooped it and listed, might still have it, $99k… I would never fall for this and hate it for that next guy/gal unknowingly getting into a situation that they’re gonna be taken on financially. Not their fault, dishonest people with selfish intentions.
Great video. Long time Porsche owner and I am also a watch collector. I always felt my vintage 1966 Breitling Navitimer reminded me of the Sport Chrono on my 991.
Good video. I do feel that it was geared towards owners of Porsche 911s. Almost as if the title should have been "7 Types of Porsche 911 Enthusiast You Don't Want to Become". Nothing wrong with that at all, just pointing out that there was no mention of any other P-Car, that I was able to catch. I was biased towards the 911 myself, when shopping for my first Porsche, and I was not a fan of convertibles. A coworker offered to let me drive their Boxster with the top down. I reluctantly accepted and now I own one LOL. I have no plans of ever getting a rear-engine Porsche 🙂
Great point. I can’t list out every Porsche when I reference “Porsche” in my vids…but I hear you. For the record I’ve owned and loved a 981 Cayman S, a 981 GT4 and currently own a 981 Spyder. I also had a 924 martini edition.
Any flipper is the same, be them dealer or private seller. I’m happy for anyone to make fair money selling cars if they want to, and it helps give competition to the market and stop dealers pushing up prices. I don’t think good profit should be kept just for dealers who have been very greedy with their prices in my experience.
@@Rennthusiast it’s legal to make a profit flipping cars without a dealers licence in Europe, and many dealers over here are as crooked as not. But I do agree buying from a reputable main dealer does give some customer protection or they risk losing their franchise.
Another one to add to your list is... If you are a 911, Cayman, or Boxter owner, learn to return the friendly wave/acknowledgement when meeting an oncoming fellow Porsche. It's great community, and we're fortunate to drive these amazing machines.
Don't forget the 3 pedal pedantics. I love my MT's but there's absolutely no reason to bash someone or someone's car or listing for being an AT. On the flip side the real enthusiast doesn't care what others think. They love driving their car and being part of the community. They're all amazing machines.
You're right on the mark identifying the various types of people you find in clubs that are focused on a hobby, or other type of activity. I think it's a human nature that is in many people, probably linked to some DNA from way back. I've been in the Porsche world since 1980, and I have seen exactly the type of people in the Porsche world you describe throughout all those years. It's the basically the same in fly fishing, photography, golf, high tech, wine enthusiasts, you name it! lol
Someone posted his new 964 tiptronic Carrera 2 and plenty of people dissed. "Oh too bad it's a tiptronic", "What a shame", etc. I hope I die before I become an asshole like that... ruining the guy's all happiness of his new car. World is full of losers and lowlifes.
Thank you sir! Negatory, have not been asked. I am reasonably sure they are aware of me, though. I have done some vids with the guy Nathan Merz who they have on their channel a lot.
Don't be that guy that disrespects Caymans and Boxsters.
For sure. I am sold on the mid engine Porsches and was thinking just today about how 911 guys don’t give them much love.
Was about to make the same comment when I saw this comment. Thank you.
This is one of my worries about joining the PCA. I just placed an order for a 718 Cayman. Am I going to be looked down upon because it's "Only a Cayman"?
@@DRoth2150hell no
After all, we Boxster owners know which is the best Porsche 🙂
I would add one more. The Porsche Snob. This is usually the rich guy who owns one of the newest, most expensive cars and looks down on anyone who doesn't own a car that costs over $150k. They also typically know very little about the brand or its history. I've owned 5 different Porsches and the most I've ever paid for one is $38k. If it has a Porsche badge on it, it's a Porsche.
Everyone one of them has a role in the overall history and brings with it the DNA of the brand.
LOVE my 996, even the fried eggs and the truth that this car single handedly saved the Company, but you'll never hear the purists admit that reality.
And usually actually can’t drive it other than stop light drag races and short stops.
Don’t get it twisted you can mod that thing and make it move good for you
You’ve got more 911 miles under your belt then most of use poor folk could ever dream of
I didn’t mention that I am 6’4”.
Typing before video is finished..
My addition would be: Don't be a 911 supremist.
Every Porsche is amazing.
Sorry but no, rebadged VW's are not amazing (924 and Macan).
Nah
we do not talk about the 914
Also, there's the "oh look it's a PDK, sucks it's not a manual" guy.
The 992 Turbo S I drove was just fine with a PDK ;)
@@thomprdI have encountered lots of those lately when I was trying to sell my PDK car.
I'm guessing you drive a PDK then
I’m that guy.
Gays, invalids and girls drive sport cars with automatics (PDK is just one kind of auto)!:)
Highly recommend. Once you join, register for one of their group drives. Super fun. Nice folks.
Enjoy. 🤗🏁
That is good to hear. I have shied away from PCA because my neighbor (highly involved) made me feel like I was trying to join Augusta National.
I would add: "The one that hates on the Cayenne and Macan"
Without them Porsche would probably not exist today.
And they still are tuned by Porsche engineers, have the Porsche build quality and are usually the sportiest in their class.
Porsche was close to bankruptcy when the first Boxter was launched. The Porsche for everyone. The rest is history…
Thank you for sharing the vid. Helps the channel 🙏🏼
I love it.
@@paulb7207 As it should be, Paul.
Thx.
Amen!
Ngl, you sound a bit like a npc who has blind brand loyalty rather than judging every car on it's own merits.
@lukew6725 Didn’t your mommy teach you that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all? 😀
That makes two of us with the same experience.
944 is awesome. And a mint one at that, you have one hell of a car.
i just picked up a 944 six months ago. it is my first porsche. a bit of a fixer upper. but i dont mind working on my cars
Fantastic job Will! I’ve owned a 911, 944, and now own a 924. All are amazing! Each is unique and incredible. Great video!!
I regret to say that I have met all of these guys. I just smile and wave at them from my 914. 😂
Cheers 🍻

Yep, am a watch guy also whilst enjoying my Porsche 928 S4 MY89 :-). Good video. Cheers Tony
I think these stereotypes can apply for all car enthusiast groups. Very well put and universally applicable.
Me too!
Indeed
Nicely Done Will! Being an enthusiast means being “Enthusiastic” about all stories, cars journeys and quests to learn…
I’m quirky myself so I don’t want to sit here and act like I’m perfect but I do try to do no harm and to share my excitement about the cars with others.

Awesome shout out for Teddy! Both great channels!
Lucky Guy married to Courtney
Good video. I'm not only a Porsche guy but basically just a car guy. I'll talk to anyone about cars and driving and road trips and modifications and whatever but what I really don't want to talk or read about all the time is value and valuation. It's worth what you'll pay for it or what you sell it for.
Never, ever, apologize for doing the right thing.
What's kind of cool is the 924 and 944 are being admired at the Porsche meets lately...
The irony of some dude trying to “insult” me under this video of all videos isn’t lost on me 😂
Thanks for commenting and watching.
Mine was a fully updated 77 with 10k original miles. Owner was a millionaire who pampered it. I kept his mechanic
I'm a 34 year PCA member and really enjoyed this video. I agree with everything you said. and subscribed..Thanks
I think people are fed up with these cars being posted for $200,000 over MSRP. It weeds out the true enthusiast who can only afford the cars at MSRP.
So I can see the frustration from people ripping on absurd sale posts.
Great content! Every hobby/passion needs more enthusiasts!
Good advice. It certainly applies to many types of clubs and/or hobbies, that's why I've never been a 'joiner' in these types of endeavors .
I certainly feel a good bit of looking down at events when I arrive in my base 997.2, especially by those whom arrived in a 991.2 or 992.
Really? That’s sad since you own one heck of a car!
I have to agree with you. Unfortunately, I felt the same way earlier this year when I participated in a club drive with our mint condition 944S2. Some people don’t seem to appreciate those of us who don’t wish to put all of our eggs in one basket.
997.2 was the peak 911 in my opinion
@PointNemo9 Agreed… and I now currently own a 992.1 T alongside the 997.2 C2. I prefer the 997.2 significantly over the 992.
These are all good points. Anytime I have researched help through forums looking for answers that I have not been able to find online, the most irritating people are the ones that ridicule you for simply asking a question. "Ever heard of Google" or "Stop posting in the wrong thread"
Yep…total assholes
Good list Will. All correct boiling down to all being respectful of others and lifting them up instead of bringing them down.
New or old…
Great job. Now you have my attention and respect. Carry on
Great idea with this video. The guy who owns that 944 today, might be in a position to own a 930 tomorrow. Your journey analogy is spot on. Enthusiasts for these cars have more in common than not.
Appreciate your positive attitude. Well done.
Yeah they have NO right to be snobs. I have both and pretty sure mid engine is better. And my 911 is a turbo S manual. Cheers. Love my cayman S.
I don't do grocery store parking lots
Very informative Will. Always nice hearing your opinion and sound thoughts.
Do you think that macan is good enough to be your first porsche? Or do you recommed to continue saving money for at least a 718?
Yes the Macan is definitely good enough to be your first Porsche. If it has a Porsche badge on the hood, it's good enough to be your first Porsche. Enjoy!
It is definitely good enough but I caution you that right after you get it you start dreaming about the next until you get the Cayman/911. The thrill the cars give you in the corners, vs the SUV, sets them apart. Maybe try an older Boxster/Cayman first to get the feel. The 718 is a beast.
Great stuff in this video!! Also the snob!
Love these Will. You hit it on the head man. #1 is NUMBER ONE!!!
I don't even feel good enough to go to any porsche events here I can relate to your comment 1000%
great video and good that you brought those points up...love your channel ;) regards from Germany
Blue ridge mountain roads are amazing…where I always go to drive.
True I am in to watches and currently own 13 Rolex, 5 AP and a Cartier.
I have two ss Daytonas one with the black dial and one with a white dial!
It’s interesting to know that people that collect watches and own Porsches are somewhat related. I definitely fall into that category.
What about the Porsche owners who believe that they are superior drivers when in fact they are not?
That’s probably the person who shows up at driving events and pushes the envelope…and wrecks
You hit the nail on the head. Thank you for this video!
Went to my first PCA meeting with my 996, just bought it, first Porsche and half of those there looked down their nose at me and made snide comments
about the car and myself. Never went back to a meeting and I'm fine with it. BTW, I Do not care anymore what the "Airheads" say, my next 911 will be a
997.
Nice video. Like the concept.
OH OH. I got a 8th one , Don’t become a piece of crap, Porsche dealer, who you’re so money hungry you lose sight of what a Porsche Car really is
I’ve joined the local PCA chapter twice, about twenty years apart, and each time I send up leaving because of the hate for transaxle Porsches.
991.1 is a good choice.
Let’s roll! Got an air cooled Porsche weekend driving event planned for the spring up in the mountains.
(I’m not buying cars as investments, but I’d like to get into a car where I don’t have to worry about it taking a dive and potentially finding myself contemplating taking a huge >20% loss in no more than a couple years.)
Also…some of these “dealers” scouting the BaT, PCM, nationwide inventory and scooping up hot cars for their inventory.
Saw it happen near me, Porsche dealer got an 11’ or 12’ C2S cab 1-owner 1,900 miles. Asking under $72k. Ok that’s reasonable you’re paying for the experience of a new pristine 997.2
Well known dealer in the Northeast scooped it and listed, might still have it, $99k… I would never fall for this and hate it for that next guy/gal unknowingly getting into a situation that they’re gonna be taken on financially. Not their fault, dishonest people with selfish intentions.
Great video. Long time Porsche owner and I am also a watch collector. I always felt my vintage 1966 Breitling Navitimer reminded me of the Sport Chrono on my 991.
I’d also add the “air-cooled snob”
Yep totally agree, the worst of them all
Don’t be that guy who thinks that the 911 is the only Porsche to own. Remember what you said, “Be Respectful “
Dealer’s license makes it legal and also protects the consumer.
The thing with the flipper is…the dealership supplied them with allocations. Real buyers usually don’t get them.
It's the basically the same in fly fishing, photography, golf, high tech, wine enthusiasts, you name it! lol
great video to make awareness !!! specially for new comers , Gracias
I’ve got zero interest in something that’s old & only been driven in the dry once a year..if you own it drive it man 👍enjoy it..
Great Video, brother! Do you partner with PCA for any content?
Thank you sir! Negatory, have not been asked. I am reasonably sure they are aware of me, though. I have done some vids with the guy Nathan Merz who they have on their channel a lot.
