If you’ve been following along you’ll remember in the last video [ • Building the SUR-RON X... ] we took a stock Surron Lightbee X and gave it the Shock Bikes power treatment. The Surron got a BAC8000 controller with the 15kW EBMX tune [bit.ly/ShockBA...], APT Display, the biggest Surron battery, a 72v 57Ah EBMX battery [bit.ly/Shock72...], seat risers to accommodate that bigger battery, a DirtyBike mechanical 1/4 turn throttle [bit.ly/DirtyBi...] and a Pro Bash Plate [bit.ly/ProBash...].
Now that we’ve thrown all of that power and weight at the bike, it’s now time to address the other components on the bike. So we went back to our friends at Elite motorsports (bit.ly/elitektm) with the next batch of parts from Shock Bikes in hand.
First up is the custom, reinforced EBMX swing arm (bit.ly/EBMXSwi..., which is more rigid and roughly 2.4” longer than the stock Surron swingarm. The bike also received the custom YSS EBMX shock (bit.ly/EBMXShock). It’s clearly bigger and has a longer eye to eye length but it also has slightly less travel. Less travel aside, this is a much burlier shock than the stock one. Because the shock is longer than OEM, the kit also comes with a custom Rear Linkage and Triangle, which is set up to bring the EBMX shock in line with the travel of the stock shock.
Woodys Wheel Works (bit.ly/WoodysW...) laced us up a set of Excel wheels with the 19” up front and a 16” in the rear. The Excels are running Pirelli Scorpion MX32 tires and we’ve also mounted a bigger, 58T rear sprocket.
We also swapped out the mechanical throttle for another Dirtybike throttle option, this time it’s the Magura, 1/4 turn throttle (bit.ly/DirtyBi....
The stock pegs were replaced by some race spec pegs and peg brace (bit.ly/ShockFo....
I was planning to use a WP air fork off of a KTM 85SX. GritShift sent the mounting kit (bit.ly/GritShi...) to put this on and I’ve obviously got the fork and the triple clamps, what I don’t have is a full brake kit and hub for the front of this bike.
After pricing all of that stuff out this swap was going to cost me over $3000 which to me was too insane so while I scour the Internet for used parts to make this happen, our friends at Charged Cycle Works sent us a FastAce fork (bit.ly/FastAceCCW) with their mid tune on it.

Would love to see a 4MFoundry kit on it, although it would probably require some tweaking due to the existing mods.
@@campfather Yeah, for sure! This battery is too big for the 4MF kit but I know it will work with the EBMX 72v42Ah battery. Might be something we explore later in the series...
Upgrade from chain to belt drive (a few SurRon dealers have offered this upgrade on new bikes from their shop as a preinstalled option for about 400 USD).
An adjustable seat mod, so you can go from "adventure" to "trial" and maybe a couple settings in between (Kuberg Ranger has this). No idea where you'd get it or who makes/would make one.
Rohloff E-14 Speedhub for performance PEV. They are NOT inexpensive NOR cheap. You get what you pay for - the power on a SurRon will explode an Enviolo CVT, which is what I normally suggest for PEV upgrades that use mid-drives (the cheap Shimano IGH will likely eat themselves too). There are a few companies that have the right rims on the shelf and will cut spokes/build the wheel for you at reasonable cost. Well, actually it's a trivial cost compared to the cost of Rohloff parts in the first place.
Speaking of spokes - you could install soft spokes, like Berd.
And instead of regular MX forks, try something evolutionary like the Trust Messenger or Motion Ride E18 linkage fork systems (maybe even something as wild as the Lauf Carbonara, which is something completely different altogether).

Great build. Love your choices. Also consider that YZ85 front end is a direct fit on SurRon. Just swap bearing races and add a 6mm spacer under the lower bearing to make up for the difference in steerer tube length. The KYB fork and the brake and hub from a YZ85 are easy to find cheap and imho offer extremely good performance on SurRon.

My stock Talaria front fender fits on the Fastace. The stock DNM had 3 bolts and 2 of them line up perfectly on the Fastace

Just finished my talaria, ext rear shock, warp bars and pegs, ebmx 9000, 72 volt 57ah battery. Been running 12 and 15kw with 500 to 700 amps. Amazing how much more fun these bikes are with more power. I can feel the extra battery weight but the power is nuts. Forks are next.
Sold my Surron about a year too early because I needed more bike. There are so many crazy parts available now, wish I still had it.
@Cruise Suski I know!! Pretty unbelievable how many modification options there are now. Never too late to get another one.
the 21'/18' will definitely raise seat level, and Shimano H03C's are essential too. Pretty similar to my build,a nd I am running the 21/18 combo with seat extenders -I'm 6'-2" though and it works well until I want lower COG which is the only drawback. I run a BAC 4k and a Chibatt 60/60 that combined with the 18" rear is a killer combo, and should have that new swingarm from France's MTO Bros soon. Several friends run the same with 72v and are crazy hill-climbers! Thanks Tucker, you are the reason I bought my first Sur Ron in 2019

@Charged Cycle Works Too light for this one but I'm glad we tried it. I think the plush tune for a lighter bike/rider that is riding at a slower pace would love the plush tune. Looking forward to trying the heavier tune and see how it compares!!
I've envisioned myself going off roading with a Sur Ron I plan on getting. But man, you seem to be going faster than what I imagined myself going on a Sur Ron even though you're just casually talking and feeling the bike. Great riding!

This is awesome. Waiting for a bike that can handle the TKO like a gas bike and be in the 150LB range. It needs to be able to handle the hills as well. I've ridden hard enduros on ktm bikes here in the north east and weight and vibration ware you down quick. The gas bikes are usually around 250lb+. Even the ktm freeride is around 300 lbs. Would like a bike that comes in kit form so I can build it. Kit form should keep bike cost down and shipping cost down as well.
KTM Freeride weighs in at 245lbs not 300lbs. Power off the bottom is comparable to KTM enduro. But yes weight at 245lbs is still to much weight in my book. Selling my KTM Freeride because of the weigh and top heavy feel of the 65lbs battery.
K maybe I was thinking of the storm bee?? Doesn't matter though because like you said the battery weight up high is not good. The freeride probably feels alot heavier when lifting it off the ground after you fall because of the high weight placement. Also- don't forget about the metal wrap around hand guards, skid plates, etc you need to add for hard enduros. That weight goes up quick.
@@daviddirienzo6197 You're probably thinking of the Surron Storm weight. The Storm F is going to be about 280 pounds (the one I tested was 290). I'm pretty fond of the KTM Freeride. @electriccyclerider- yes that is it. Yes I saw that rieju is working on an electric bike but there isn't much info yet. I think the ultra bee is interesting.
Bruh, this build is so dope. Curious why you aren't going with a 21" / 18" setup? I'm about to buy a Talaria w/ a 16/19 with KX85 forks, and I'm a little worried the wheels will not be big enough for real enduro obstacles.
@1badhusky Thanks dude! I'll probably end up running the 21/18. Just wanted to try the 19/16 to see how it worked and originally the same thought as you. I was planning to run that WP air fork, which would have been a 19/16 setup, so wanted to try that out first. I'll probably have to run a smaller tire on the 21 to work with the FastAce fork but we will try it out for the next video!
I’m always so surprised how much this looks like MTB and if you jumped into the video without seeing the bike you could easily be mistaken since it’s so quiet. The speed is a dead giveaway but still…! Forget to $10k EMTB I’m gunna buy one of these.

This build is super cool and I'm really enjoying watching it progress, but - based on some quick back of the napkin math - you've got to be somewhere north of $13K on this build, not including labor costs, right? It just makes me wonder how it stacks up against the other proper E-dirtbikes like the Varg and the Stormbee, etc. since it's now equaling or exceeding that same price range. Would love to hear your thoughts on that.
@Miller Truby Yeah man! It's a valid point for sure. I'll run a final tally on what all of these parts would cost to do the build all-in for the final video. I expect it to be a lot.
A huge selling point of the Surron Lightbee X is it's affordability. Something that I have always preached. And once you start modding it, it's really easy to go crazy on a build like this. But... it's fun to do! A big part of the fun is tinkering and modding these bikes and seeing how they turn out.
This bike will never really compare to a Stark VARG, especially on an MX track or terrain where you'd want a full size moto. But it does have some attributes, like it's low weight, crazy power to weight ratio and incognito appearance that can't really be matched either. So it definitely depends on what your main purpose for the bike is. If there is anything that Surron owners have proved is that they are using the bikes for a lot of different purposes, so I try to keep that in mind.
The real point of contention for these expensive Lightbee builds is going to be the Surron Ultra Bee. I still expect that bike to warrant some modding but with it's low price point, higher performance and features, it might really shake things up in this category. Hope that answers your question some.
@@ElectricCycleRider It absolutely does, and I appreciate the super-detailed reply. You are right that the tinkering is part of the fun; I don’t think I know anyone - including myself - who has owned a totally stock dirtbike. Everybody does SOME mods because that’s part of the fun. I’m just trying to figure out where the line is with the X where it would make more sense to buy something that’s a lot more serious from the factory instead of trying to make the X something that it wasn’t meant to be. Kinda feels like you’re approaching that line with The Beast where the only thing left of the original bike is the frame. Again, super cool and I’m loving watching you do it; keep going and keep showing us what works and what doesn’t!
Can you do breakdown of the costs of all your mods? Would be good to know what each mod costs for any of us looking to upgrade our surrons 👍

Great videos. Having recently installed a bac4000 & 60v 53ah I wondered what kw tune you have you found best on the surron for this type of loop? I have tried 10kw & found Level 4 & 5 too much for 95% of the enduro style trail I ride, & when I do push on the chassis & suspension quickly become a limiting factor! 👍🏻
It needs the ebmx 28.6 bar and stem combo.

How big of a difference is there between Fox 40 forks and the fast ace? I’m looking to get fox but the ace are so much cheaper.
@Travis Williams If I'm honest, I think the Fox 40 is a little overrated for the Surron. I think they get a lot of attention for the name and the look but I don't think they are the best performing fork for these bikes. If I had to choose, I'd go with a tuned FastAce over the Fox.
I have to fox 40s with the stiffest yellow spring in my hub bomber bike and it's just still way to soft for real off-road stuff.
Do you plan on getting a KO motor, or any other motor, to prevent overheating, especially on technical ascends?

Sick job! I have the all stock Sur Ron and love it. I had a KTM 350 EXC-F awhile back and that thing was great. Do you feel like instead of modding the sur ron you should have just bought the KTM Freeride?
@Dan O Awesome! The stock Surron is great, especially if you have another full size bike like your 350. You can easily get down a rabbit hole with the Surrons. I've got the KTM Freeride here too and it's a great bike as well. It just depends what type of riding you're doing. The Surron Lightbee weight and feel is quite a bit different than the KTM and both bikes perform better than the other depending on what environment you're riding it in...

@alex serra I wouldn't convince you not to get a GasGas or KTM! Just trying to build something awesome on this one. Gas bikes make more sense for a lot of riders, for sure!
How would you compare this Beast to the Freeride at this point in terms of power, range and general ride character?
@fooblahblah I really want to get this Surron dialed in before I can really answer that but both bikes still react quite different. The Surron feels a lot better in the areas that it suffered in stock form, but it still feels lighter and nimble, so that is an improvement. The Surron is much faster than the KTM now too. I think it will be a damn good contender when it's fully set up. Taller bars, stiffer fork setting, and 21/18 combo should make it pretty damn cool! I'll comment on that for the final build video for sure!

@Ante Milas This is a completely different bike! The bike you're thinking of is the XX build with the 4MF kit. That bike will be getting an overhaul soon too but this is a different build. 👍

I get double with the 60v 63 ah. The 57ah is even bigger.
Does that swingarm allow you to use a 19” wheel with a normal sized tire and no chain rub? What about 18” wheel with no dish?
You can run 90/100 and some 100 width tires but you ALWAYS must dish the wheel away from the chain the swingarm doesn’t change this. All of Charged Cycle Works wheels fit those sizes without additional dishing needed
What happened to the 4MF MOTO bike?
i'm almost sure about my decision and waiting release of ultra bee to buy one but when i see your light bee i have some doubt about my choice 😂
I already plan to change origin wheels for 21/18 and see about battery and tiny things so i think total cost will help to make a final decision ^^
A stock ultra bee should be on par with a light bee that had at least 8 or 10 grand put into it so I'd wait for the ultra bee probably
Thinking about the fork, how much do you weigh with gear on? And which tune did you get for the fork? Plush, aggressive, or heavy?
@Jeremy Kendrick I weigh 165-170 with gear. We tried out the plush tune with the 50lb spring on this build but for my riding style and weight of the bike, it's not enough. The forks feels really nice at slower speeds but we're going to try for the aggressive tune with 65lb spring next and see how that does. I'm impressed with the fork and nice that there are tuning options. What type of riding are you doing? Your weight?
@@ElectricCycleRider I'm maybe 10 pounds heavier and do the same kind of riding as you, I'm between the aggressive and heavy tune because I wanna make sure it's enough not only for fast gnarly single track but also jumps. If you change it out for the aggressive tune are you gonna make a vid about it?
@@jkendrick63 Yeah for sure, I'll repost about it. If you have a heavier-than-stock battery, riding fast and are jumping, I'd probably go for the heavy tune.
@@ElectricCycleRider so why don't you go for the heavy tune? Since your bike has some of the heaviest parts available on it and that's some gnarly single track you ride at a good pace

What tune from charged cycle works did you do on the fastace?
@Evan Petrie They sent out the plush tune with 50lb spring for this one but we're going to try a stiffer option next. It feels really nice at slower speeds but for my weight (and the bikes weight) and riding style, I'll need to stiffen it up. Probably a 65lb spring and aggressive tune for the next test. All of that considered, I'm very impressed with the fork though!

How does this suspension compare to your Fox fork and shock from your XX?
@GrannygearKiller Completely different ball game! The Fox 40 is a big improvement over the stock DNM or KKE but I still think that Fox 40 fork is a bit overrated for the Surron for the price. After these first few rides, I'd choose the tuned FastAce over any of the 5 or so Fox 40's setups that I've tried on different Surron and Talaria bikes. My XX Fox 40 was tuned by Dirtlabs and has a more aggressive tune, which is still a nice setup. The YSS shock is so much better than the Fox DHX shock it's unreal! That is the biggest difference, for sure. Can't even compare the two.
Sick build. I’m still wondering after all of those mods, regarding value for the money, why not just buy an old yzf250 rolling chassis and bolt on an Electro & Company qs138 90H kit pushing 25kW for $1,500?
@Andy Jonathan It's a great question! The YZF Electro & Co option sounds really cool. I haven't ridden one but my guess is they are just going to be two different types of bikes. The YZF more of a true dirt bike and the modded Surron still a super lightweight bike. Such a can of worms that gets opened when you start modding the Surron and it's hard to say what is better, guess it just depends on the person and what they're using it for...

Idk once you go to a mx fork you’re going to have all that unsprung weight… from the hub and brake rotor and caliper. I don’t think it would make the bike ride well.

Man, 3x the cost of a Sur-Ron with all the parts and labor.....it's almost like you could just buy a used Alta Redshift for $10k that would dumpster any Sur-Ron in just about every situation for less money.

Why not buy a dirt bike rolling frame from 2003 -2020 and convert to electric? This is far more savings and way better suspension and frame.

$15,000 Surron. Good for a TH-cam channel build video but for normal folks, just buy a slightly used KTM XCW300 for $8k if you want to ride off road.
@Grant Bowen That's what we're here to figure out! But yeah, there isn't an electric dirt bike that exists that would convince me not to have a KTM 300 XCW....

This is a conversation we have with our customers all the time since we (Charged Cycle Works) build a ton of $10k+ surrons for people. We tell them up front how expensive they can get and if they are bigger dudes that they might be better off buying a Moto bike. We find that there are a lot of people out there that simply don’t want a full moto bike with a clutch and they love the size and weight of the SurRon that they are OK spending KTM amounts of money on them. Not everyone is a full MotoHead like we all are. Like Tucker, I still LOVE riding my 300 and waiting for an electric that can replace it.
Hey, I think it’s all good if people know what they want and what they are getting into. 300’s can be intimidating but they are actually quite easy to ride depending on the terrain. In the long run these are all big boy/girl toys and we like to spend money on them. For now, gas bikes are superior because of the power, weight and clutch but it’s all fun and electric is coming.
I used to ride 250s/450s, now I am older and a through injuries a bi-lateral amputee. My Talaria is perfect for getting back into riding. No foot controls, nice size. I agree that holy crap I've put some money into it and could've bought a KTM, however I can rip this thing and see myself hopping back on a 300 or a 450 maybe next year.

@George Superack It's a great question and I am definitely not going to say you shouldn't buy two gas bikes... These Surron builds are for a specific type of rider. The point of the video isn't to suggest that this is a better option than a "real" dirt bike though. Just having fun building something crazy and so are a lot of riders in this community!
