I flew there in 2008, just four years after Druk Air got their first Airbus. The final approach through the Himalayan valley is very low, and requires turning around a mountain. The pilot has a very short time to line up, and the runway starts at the bend of the river. At that time, the pilots were all Swiss, with Bhutanese first officers, and they had an impeccable safety record. We were warned that there was a significant chance we would be canceled and rescheduled on account of weather, but that didn’t happen and our flight was uneventful. It’s a small but beautiful airport.

    I was at the airport when the plane crashed, had just arrived in time for a flight. I was only eight years old but I remember it very vividly. I remember sitting inside and waiting for news to reach us of just what had gone wrong, when a lady came in, bleeding from a huge gash in her forehead. We later learned she was disoriented. She had fled the scene but was still in shock. The airport was never the same after this. Big planes don't land there, and most people avoid it, since the one in San Pedro Sula is far safer, making it the best choice in the country.

    You gave the "Official" reasons for this accident but you missed one... Pressure from the airlines!!! These pilots are under a tremendous amount of pressure to get to their destination on time using the absolute least amount of fuel possible!!! Not saying it's the airlines fault mind you, just saying that these folks are under a lot of pressure... Excellent video sir, always appreciate how much effort you put into these videos!!! Thank you :-)

    • @MrMattumbo
      @MrMattumbo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah I was wondering why they would even plan the route like this. Even in perfect conditions the plane was barely within limits and the airline must've known this, why would they tempt fate having heavy airplanes make a stop at that airport before flying to Miami? Especially when there's a safer airport close enough to still service Honduran passengers.

    • @peterwatson1094
      @peterwatson1094 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Absolutely agree. An accident is never down to only one reason. This runway is too short for an A320. So why plan to go there at max weight? Then add in wet runway and tailwind. Yes, the captain is ultimately to blame, but he is just the last link in a long chain of events that put him in this position. 😡😡😡

      As a commercial pilot working for a big Irish company I have never ever felt the pressure related to Fuel or destination! saving 450 dollars of fuel is not worth anybodies safety. It is different down in south america but then still Iwould rather lose my job and do the right thing than that! Dont forget that!

    • @scottfranco1962

      I heard there is an Indian Airline operating today that forces its Pilots to Land with the Maximum Flaps (shortest landing possible) to save about 10 Kilos of Fuel per Landing... That's just a Tragedy waiting to Happen.

    I remember this accident as well because my ex was stationed in Honduras at the time. He said he hated having to fly there!! He said that there's an X on the runway where the plane has to touch down directly on it, or they have to go around. He said it's no longer than the average sideway/block. It's sad because the pilots felt that it wasn't going to work 😔😔

    Nicely and slickly produced video. In 1976, I flew a TACA 737 from San Jose, Costa Rica to New Orleans via "The Goose" and Belize as a passenger. I remember looking out the window as we made the approach and looking *up* at hill tops as we flew by. The landing was a little noisy as every possible breaking facility was used. But where things got a little more interesting was during the take off. As the 737 was climbing out, I heard a bang and felt a bump throughout the aircraft. Thereafter, a most nauseating smell filled the cabin. A Boeing tech was in the seat in front of me. He turned around and said "Damn buzzard! They get sucked in two or three times a month. Don't worry. This plane can take it!" I felt reassured, but still hated the smell. So watch out for the buzzards of Tegucigalpa!

    • @scottfranco1962
      @scottfranco1962 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@redone729 As long as you realize that it is irrational. I face this every day being a light airplane pilot. People think I am a crazy daredevil for flying a light airplane, and yet they think nothing about driving 70 miles an hour only a yard (meter) or two away from other cars at the same speed in the opposite direction (for those good at math, its 140 mph closing speed).
      Are light aircraft dangerous? Studying the statistics, their are far fewer accidents per mile in light aircraft, but those accidents tend to be more deadly. Impacts with the ground are not forgiving. However, any reading of statistics also show that the accident rate is mostly up to the pilot: he/she can be safe, or not safe, depending on those few inches of matter between the ears. Even impacting the ground is a highly survivable event. Light airplanes can slow down to freeway speeds (60mph), which is a very survivable crash speed, even if hitting objects on the ground (in fact, even less injuries would result if aircraft followed the same crash survivability standards as cars, with airbags and body parts designed to crush and save the occupants).

    the Tegus airport...where pilots literally had to drop down out of the mountains, a hard turn, and onto the runway. Flew in there in 1990 on Take A Chance Airlines (TACA). Thats what they called it before this crash! Grateful we made it with no issues.

  • @bobgreene2892
    @bobgreene2892 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Once again, a commendation to you for having provided a concise summary of the full official review of the crash. Essentially, the aircraft was overweight, and attempted landing with a wet runway, pushed by a tailwind twice the allowable speed, and a forced landing past the first taxiway entrance. It is simply amazing more people were not killed. That the pilot forced a landing under these conditions-- though he considered a San Pedro alternate-- is a measure of how much pressure pilots face to perform normal operations under abnormal conditions.

    Hats off to the programmers who made the creation of such a video possible. The mapping of the livery to the plane, the weather, the realistic view out the pilot's window etc. etc. are all gigantically impressive to me, a would-be software engineer.
    ...and of course, hats off to the creators of this channel, for using such software to create such an informative and realistic result.
    I'm a new subscriber to this channel, btw.

      @@dsanalysis5013 You might be better off making an assessment of the type of aircraft going there. A smaller aircraft with a shorter landing requirement could be a better solution...or, just don't fly there.
