A good friend of mine was piloting a gulf stream that was holding short for this aircraft to land. He watched the whole thing unfold. I think I remember him telling me the fire trucks went down but there was an airport perimeter fence in the way so they drove back up, exited the airport grounds and came around from the side roads which added time to them getting to the aircraft.

I reached the crash site just 45 mts. after the crash. I also published an article as to how many lives could be saved in the news paper Hindu. Actually it was the fire after the crash, which killed many passengers since the fire force did not act immediately. The plane had crashed just before the demarcating compound and the fire was just building up, these fire force vehicles could have crashed the compound with their vehicles and sprayed water of foam to put out the blaze, but they didnt. They drove till the compound, then went back and reached the crash site through the main road by which time 25 mts had passed and the passengers were charred. After nearly two decades, I still remember this horrific crash. Worst was a woman who was charred with a baby in her arms. It gives me chills even today.

@@senjurajib It's actually extremely archaic to use the word "cum" to mean "also used as". The correct way to phrase that sentence in modern English would have been to either join the words with a "/" mark (e.g. ....which was the domestic/international airport back in time...) or to simply join the words with "and" (...which was the domestic and international airport back in time...). "Cum" hasn't been used to mean "also used as" since the 1800s.

I was living in Bangalore when this accident happened. Infact I went to the crash site along with a friend of mine few days later. The plane did not even enter the airport, it was lying just outside the airport. The first half of the plane was completely burnt and from what I heard most of the passengers who were in the back of the plane survived. The video says the two pilots have 5,175 and 7,176 hours respectively in A320 . This cannot be correct .They started flying the A320 only in 1989 and the accident happened in Feb 1990 . So many hours cannot be flown in less than one year . Wikipedia gives the figure as 68 and 255 hours for the two pilots . Both not enough experience .

    • @747-pilot
      @747-pilot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +58

Yes, it seems shocking, but this shortcoming can be seen quite often among incompetent pilots! A lot of people (and pilot's) don't realize that good SITUATIONAL AWARENESS is one of the most important aspects of being a good pilot! The classic "tunnel vision" scenario! They get so focused on some minor detail on the flight deck, that they lose sight of the big picture! And, NO, those union guys are a bunch of nutjobs. It's not the plane's fault (rollseyes). 100% PILOT ERROR, plane and simple!

The gas pedal/brake pedal theory in general only applies with the stick and rudder in an aircraft, as they're both motor skills. I would compare this to an average driver going overseas and rents a car with the steering wheel on the other side, and rather frequently when the driver turns the stalk to signal he/she end up triggering the wipers, or more appropriately for this scenario, the cruise control. The A320 series being so brand new back then meant that both pilots should be considered new on type.
And this is not the first time pilots get confused with knobs, especially if they're unfamiliar with the system. KAL 007 got shot down because they had put the nav switch set to HDG instead of INS NAV, and not knowing that the INS will happily tick over when the aircraft goes abeam a waypoint, even when massively off course.
And FBW Airbus is especially challenging because it doesn't fly like a conventional aircraft, it flies like a PlayStation with wings. (Also think of a Tesla, with everything inside a touchscreen) This is made worse as 1988 was when the aircraft began commercial service, and the systems were so whiz-bang that older pilots had difficulties getting their head around the aircraft, and there weren't the later hardware & software revisions (often learnt from bloody experience) that made the airplanes safer and easier for pilots to understand and fly, alongside better navigational aids at airports.

Although the intro being very well done to me doesn't make you the great channel you are. The content, quality, add-ons, animations, detailed information etc etc is what makes you the greatest Air Crash Aviation channel on youtube. Love the animations of the ground vehicles and people walking around, don't know where you get your add-ons but they really add to the video and then it got even better with the people in the cabin talking, absolutely brilliant my friend. The only thing missing that would possibly be more realistic is the actual ATC recordings which would probably very hard to get. I was a witness to it on the day of the crash. I had walked around the aircraft after it had crashed. I use to live just beyond the airport area. It was very sad to see that. All that was left over was broken parts, black ash, burning smell of plastic and human debris. At that time, the A 320 flight's were new to us. What a curse to see a great fly- by - wire plane go down like that and turn in to ashes. It should never ever happen again , anywhere in the world. God bless all those who had perished.

I am from bangalore and am glad that you covered this incident It was a PR disaster for airbus at that time especially following the air france crash. One thing to note tho the incident occurred at bangalore's old airport (VOBG), the airport you use in this video (VOBL) was not constructed back then.

Hindus do not have the concept of a final judgement day .Hence no question of the soul resting in peace till judgement day arrives .The hindus believe that the soul goes on to its next path after death immediately.Either born again or if the person has lead a virtuous devotion filled life the soul of that person merges with the Almighty never to have rebirth again.

Whatever the PA says, you can't escape the fact that if the pilot had been paying attention, he wouldn't have turned the wrong dial. Quite honestly, the fact that they tried to blame Airbus, is breathtaking and stupid.
If you are flying the aircraft correctly, as it is supposed to be flown, and you are minding your work, this would never happen.
The A320 is flown routinely - every day, by competent pilots, worldwide. They look down, see the v/s marker above the dial, and turn it. They look down, and see the altitude selection dial, and turn it.
The clue there, is, they LOOK DOWN.
Trying to blame the manufacturers for putting the dials too close together is a cop-out, in my opinion. They had plenty of chances to realise their mistake, they should have been aware that the sink rate was too fast, and even when the aircraft shouted 500 they should have realised that they were well below the glide path at that point, and too far away from the runway to only be at 500 ft. Even the experienced supervising captain didn't realise this, which baffles me.
On top of this, he should have been noting every action and input that the training co-pilot was entering.
A pilot flying every day, would know that you should be well within half a mile of the airport before the aircraft starts announcing descent markers.
It was gross pilot error, and they are the only factor to blame for this incident.
R I P to all those on board.

I was one of the early arrivals at this crash site among many others; we tried to guide survivors up the embankment to any vehicle that would rush them to the nearby AirForce hospital. Mention of fire-force at 12:10 is partly correct; since this occurred just outside the HAL airport wall, the only access gate to this site was locked and it took awhile to either break the locks or open it for the airside fire engines to come thru. A friend's father was unfortunately killed in this crash. IC A320s were grounded for awhile thereon. Great animation btw.
