Those pilots have ice in their veins. To go through all of that and then find the resolve to be able to return to duty as a pilot. That's absolutely incredible

I worked that crash as a firefighter. We worked for two days doing recoveries. I know it's been twenty five years but it seems like it was just yesterday. I remember the sights, the sounds and the smells. What a tragic day. God bless all of those involved.

ben nevis if you have seen many of these videos and read the comments, there seems to be comments by people who say they were rescuers or their cousin or uncle was on the plane etc... not sure if it is to see if they can get likes or whatever. Very common. Very sad and disrespectful.
As one experienced captain said, I paraphrase, "it doesn't matter how many flying hours you have, it's the next hour that counts".

chinmay kumar routaray yes my brothers neck was slashed almost to his jugular, his left armpit was opened where you could see inside to his bone, rotator cuff. His wife at the time broke both hips. To this day he still has ptsd over it. He stayed in the military and retired 2 years ago as a command sergeant major. Thanks for asking.

One of my first flights ever - I was a 20 something sales rep going to a conference in Minneapolis. We went right through a massive thunderstorm - turbulence was tossing stuff around like crazy, you could see lightning out the window and I really didn't know what to make of it all. Then I caught a glimpse of the face of one of the flight attendants. I didn't know much at that young age, but I knew she was terrified. That's when I started to get nervous.
Love how you show the age of the plane stained and weathered down. Great job on making as real as you can.
@tinwoods I may be wrong but these "U.S. Air" planes don't look fully painted to begin with. They have the painted red stripe, the painted engine and tail. The rest looks metallic. No way to hide tarnished aluminum unless it's painted.
You have a good point though, if new planes are looking old.. Especially if they're fully painted and not that oldschool metallic look.

These pilots were ahead of their aircraft and were practicing CRM. It was obvious these two were a very competent crew and I am glad they weren't hung out to dry. Sad, though. T-storms are no joke.
I'm glad they returned to flying too. There must have been a lot of PTSD as well as guilt, even though it wasn't their fault.
My father was actually the first officer on this flight. He still is torn up about what happened. It’s a very interesting and sad story. I can tell you though he is very happy now and just retired from flying 2 years ago. He retired as a captain on the a330.

Yes, I do too. But it is rare to have a plane crash with great impact on the plane without fatalities. It is sad but true.

EVERYONE SURVIVED!
I was in the building at the airport when this happened. It rained straight down. No wind. It was just solid water poring. Then it just stopped and the fog lifted and we heard what sounded like the loudest lighting strike ever. It was the sound of the plane snapping huge trees. They closed the airport and we watched the helicopters come and go many times. I’ve never heard a quit airport except for that day. Break rooms were quiet. We were all in a state of shock. Saddest day ever. I’ll never forget it.

I really appreciate your presentation style. The text narration, superimposed over the realistic engine and wind noise is very easy to follow and makes the experience seem very realistic, better than most NTSB animations or over-dramatized accident reconstruction TV shows. Your music, too, is beautiful and dignified, well-suited for tales that too often end in sad outcomes. I too am a pilot, and I have learned a great deal about what to do, or not to do, from your accident synopses. Thank you for what you do, and. I wish you well.

That would actually save lives. However, schedules take precedence.

There are just some situations that can’t be avoided no matter how well prepared you are. Nobody could have foreseen that microburst so nobody should be held accountable for the crash. I’m sure all the crew members relive that event many times over. The two planes that landed before them should be thanking God for their good fortune.
There have been statements that Doppler radar could have foreseen the microburst. Now the airport is equipped with it.
@@ohdear2275 yes but it's crazy to think that there was a time where planes could just randomly fall out of the sky because of a microburst and there was literally no way to tell if it was happening or not
After all these DECADES of flying, no one ever thinks of a problem that could occur until AFTER hundreds of people die.

K Trigs not always. In the early eighties I started flying the B737-200 as a first officer. During training I indicated to my training captain and the chief pilot that I was concerned about the lack of fire detection and extinguishing systems in the cargo holds. I was flipped off with the response that they are class D compartments and as such are fire resistant. I took little delight in 1996 when I confronted them about the Valuejet crash in Miami which was brought down by a fire in the forward cargo hold. My point is that as pilots we see many shortcomings in aircraft design but are essentially powerless to create change.
@@boeingdriver29 Thank you for trying to bring attention to very real issues. As a passenger I always put my hopes into the flight crew who are doing their jobs, that they care for us passengers. I've been pretty shocked learning about just how terrible some airlines and some flight crews can be. I sometimes get a bug for wanting to look into crashes and how they came to be. My Dad was in the Air force and got me interested in planes early in life. Even knowing all I do I still depend on flying to get me to family or experiences I would otherwise not have. Thank You for trying, thank you for caring and thank you for all of the safe flights you that you made, bringing people safely down and back home.

@@Octolicia- Yes. The coal bunker fire was reported and fought for days before the fatal voyage. Not for a century was it realized how this contributed to the disaster.
@@algrayson8965 Not just that, but the fact that there was not enough lifeboat onboard for everybody. The excuse? It would spoil the passengers view. The rules where outdated and nobody did anything to fix it before it was too late.
Man i remember this like it was yesterday they used to have a exercise track that went around that section of runway, there use to be a church up there too, i was taking a Karate lesson there that day when it happened, it hadnt been raining then clouds came in and heavy winds we were way down on the other end running back up towards the parking lot in a down pour, and thats when we heard this plane coming in and it sounded weird like the engines were winding making a god awful noise, Then we were about 60 yards away from where we heard the most god awful noise like trees and loud exploding metal sounds like twisting and snapping and then we seen the nose slide across the road with other parts of the airplane torn to shreads people screaming as they passed by in the jet, i seen people still setting in their seats where there wasnt any airplane covering them it was gone they were in the airplane setting in their seats screaming and flames were just ingulfing the back half of the jet, and those people were waving their warms frantically trying to get the flames off them, i could see a ladies hair on fire, then when it finally stopped in the side of a house we ran to see if we could help but the ones that could make it out where out the rest were just burnt bodies and corpse burned beyond recognition!!! I had nightmares for years growing up, i was a littke youngin then, i think maybe 13 or 14, my dad was on the other side of the skid path in the parkinglot waiting to pick me up, hes a very stern man and he was a mess!!!! R.I.P TO ALL WHO PERISHED ON THAT DAY!!!
That must have been horrific! I always assumed that people in airplane crashes pass out or die instantly. So sad to know those poor people suffered:(
@@LVLady83 yes it was a very bad thing to see with my own eyes as a kid ya know, seeing and smelling human flesh burning was the thung that stuck in my head for years i could see one person who was engulfed in flames that waz trying desperately to get their seatbelt off until final3they just stopped moving it happened kinda quick but slow enough i could see that person struggling to get out of the seat and just the flames over came them!! It was horrible!! And the house it slid into was occupied, although i dont know if anyone was home!!!! I couldnt imagine setting in your house and out of the blue an airplane comes crashing in!!

I live about an hour and a half north of KCLT and remember this crash vividly. My aunt worked for USAir at the time and the plane went down within a mile of her house... Weather is a fickle thing, just when you think you've got it figured out she jumps up and bites you in the rear end!!! Excellent video sir :-)
This was an insidious event, meaning the downturn.
Came out of no where, and grew monstrous in 2 minutes.

Pilot's did a miraculous job, and almost got out of it.
I knew it's going to be microburst. I just watched a tornado documentary that mentioned microburst a few weeks ago. They said microburst had crashed several planes in history... My condolences for the family and friends of the 37 victims...

I thought at first this was the flight that crashed due to the engines flaming out because of heavy rain and tried to land on a highway. Great video as always tfc, thank you for sharing.
I thought the same thing, actually! Turns out it was an accident I've never heard of.
That was Southern airways flight 242 crashed on a highway in Pauding county, Georgia
They test jet engines by pointing a firehose at them while they're running. I doubt a bit of heavy rain will cause a flameout.

One of my neighbors and her husband from my hometown died on this flight. I will never forget this.
Great video! I was a Charlotte police officer that responded to the crash. The plane slid across Wallace Neal Rd and into a field close to the runway. I was a young officer and just remembered how surreal it felt chaotic at the same calm and quiet. I remember seeing a mini bottle in the grill of a car that was at crash site. Weird things you notice in middle of incidents like this. Good job on the video.
Parts of it hit a house too didn't it? Was that on Wallace Neel road also? Looking at Google maps, I don't see any houses on that road.
@@musicnerd72 Yes it hit a house. Wallace Neal Road actually used to be where the current 18R/36L is now. When the airport expanded they bought all the properties on Neal Wallace Road and tore them down to build the new runway. At the time of the accident 18R is where 18C is now.

I am truly amazed that the pilots returned to flying. I wonder have airlines developed better ways of detecting microformats, or perhaps have they made rules about flying through even mildly bad weather, to prevent this same circumstance. Well done with the new intro! Well done with everything!!
Microbursts is what it should say
Airports (especially the large and busy ones) have microburst detection systems in place these days. However, making rules about flying in “even mildly bad weather” wouldn’t benefit anyone. First of all, that is a very subjective phrase, and secondly, if planes only flew in good weather no one would ever fly anywhere.
Tracey Rossmann We as airline pilots have to undergo very intensive training once a year in full motion -very advanced simulators which are set up to simulate windshear events among other things. Airliners have detection systems on them that let us know immediately when the threat of wind shear is upon us. Not to mention ground based detection systems that air traffic control use. I hope this can calm your fears somewhat.
Doppler Radar has cured this problem for almost all major airports.
@@jetpilot3714 you would get the microburst warning. As soon as you get this, say on finals, you would add a touch of power to get you thru, to avoid being slammed down, so to speak. Is this correct technique in an airliner? Have the odd minor 'burst' occur at our airfield in the PA18, and that technique never fails. Not of the magnitude of this microburst, I hasten to add.
I’ve seen many of these videos lately, and I’m not sure I can fly with the same confidence as I used to.

In 1982, Pan Am 759 went down due to winshear on takeoff in Kenner, Louisiana. The crash was a street over from where my sister lived. This video reminds me of that disaster. God Bless the families that lost loved ones in the 1982 and 1994 crashes.
I remember flying into Charlotte with my father in the early 2000s. He pointed the crash site out to me. You could still see the disturbance in the trees from where it had hit.

I was one of the first USair employees on scene. Right before the crash it started raining so hard that i couldn't see the end of the jetway 30ft from me.
I was charged with getting the names of the survivors, documenting their injuries and what hospital they were transported to. I remember that big chunk of the left side that was still stuck to the oak tree, and the rear section that went into the house. Pretty vivid memories of the victims.
6mo later I left that job and have been a firefighter in Lexington for 29 years now.
I wish there could be that one time special where you and a buddy reenact the voices of the crew as well. Try matching it with the audio and viola! A masterpiece

As a Captain.... There's no way in hell I could fly again for the same airline.....hell ...period...if any number of my passengers were to die and my whole crew survived... Very strong of both of them for continuing to fly but I just couldn't mentally handle the memory or trauma of something like that happening...

It must have been horrible for them. I'm sure it took a lot of mental health care to get them through the trauma. I'm sure they felt guilty too even though it wasn't their fault.
Switch to railway train driver. A training video (CSX?) tells new drivers that on average the trains they drive will kill five people. Nothing like driving an air bus. Most pilots go throughout their careers without ever being involved in any deaths.

There’s a good chance you’re going to be driving a train that kills someone, and you might even watch it happen. Some operators never get back behind the controls after it happens to them-they transfer to some other role.

I was at work about ten miles from CD airport when the crash happened. Everyone was absolutely stunned. I had lived in the area for over 30 years. To my knowledge there had never been a crash in that time. It absolutely stunned everyone in the area. I live within two miles from the scene of the crash. Whenever there is a thunderstorm the landing flight path has planes fly very low above my house. It is at these times that I recall the accident. I used to drive the street on which flight 1036 crashed, and the memorial erected there. The street and surrounding area are no longer there, as the land has been absorbed by the airport and I 485.
I am astounded by the number of tragic plane crashes as depicted by this channel. I have a very real fear of flying. Everyone I know poo-poo's my fears, telling me how safe flying is compared to driving. They need to watch this channel. I flew into North Carolina years ago with my toddler son. There was a terrible thunderstorm. We were switching planes for a short flight to our final destination. That flight was delayed due to the weather thank God. I didn't mind sitting safely on the ground at the airport with a fussy 18 mo old while we waited out the storm.

I saw a midair collision in 1975 between a cessna and an otter with 16 people in 1975. It was a complete disaster. Everyone perished. Shocking at 13 years old.Still feel bad for those poor people.

They had moved to Charlotte after they got married. 🙏🏿🕊💐R.I.Pardise Patricia (Stevenson) and Jerry Price. 🙏🏿💐🕊 Who would thought on October 11, 1994, I would be taken the same flight from Columbia, SC to Charlotte, NC to joined the Navy. Talk about scary!😳

It would have been nice hearing the communication from the pilots to see how they performed or what they might have tried doing.
This channel puts out the audio usually if they can get it, they have several videos with cockpit recordings of both crashes, near misses and heroic saves.

Rajendra - you are insightful & considerate. I had the pleasure to fly as Capt and share some layover dinners with the F/O after this event. He is a gem, a gentleman and a damn fine pilot. We're both retired, but I would fly anywhere with him today. I once told him that he was "the strongest man I've ever known". He kept a keen sense of humor, but you knew this was a loss and a burden. Your cheering of his character say's much about yourself.

There ya go, weather causing a crash. My husband tells me this is never so but he is wrong. My weather fears are justified.
Your weather fears are justified. The margin for error in storm landings is greatly reduced. Pilots are under career pressure to land on time and/or not divert. Severe wind-shears and microbursts can totally overpower the lift/thrust ratio of any aircraft. It comes down to the human, land-or-don't-land decision, and that decision is fraught with economic and pride based factors.

Yes, although it did happen, think of how many flights happen a day. It's simply so rare in comparison to other vehicles like cars, which we drive in a lot. Don't be scared, it will never happen to you.

Thanks for that correction! I was wondering if merged in 2003 that's been over 15 years ago. As I can recall USAirway saved American from going bankrupt due to 2013 was in the midst of the recession.

My sister flew on a plane exactly like this one in the video with USAir in 1986, nonstop from Tampa to Indianapolis. It was on a nice sunny cool day.

#FanGirl here....OOOOOMMMGGGG THERE'S A VIDEO I CAN RELATE TOO!!! Although this is a tragedy..... I'm excited because I can talk about this one!!! I work for a hotel here in Charlotte, and after this happened.... All flights were on delay. We housed the passengers and flight crew of a few more flights and this was my first time ever hearing about a microburst!! I couldn't even imagine knowing that all your passengers died, and you survived. The way one of the pilots explained it was you can't see it to try to avoid it, and once in it, there's a slim chance of avoiding it!! I'm still amazed that this is a flight I ACTUALLY know!!
Now what's really important!!! I liked the video and had to come back to watch it once I got off!!

Could you please do the Eastern L-1011 that crashed in the Everglades? This was another horrible accident that never should have happened. The aftermath was devastating. Keep up the great work! As a former PanAm and UAL stew, I have seen many of these incidents in initial and recurrent emergency training.
I have flown in turbulance severe thunderstroms and i prayed a lot that helped
