  • Replace Alternator on Toyota Corolla and Toyota Verso Diesel D4D Engine.
    All steps shown.
Original Toyota Alternator Part Number: 270600G011
Cheapest alternator out there is a Plus Line Alternator from: www.winparts.ie/engine-parts-.... This alternator was over €200 cheaper than my local motor factors!
Plus Line Product number: 0581974. Manufacturer number: 195.568.090.050
The alternator is down the back of the Diesel D-4-D engine and is VERY hard to get to.
You HAVE TO remove the right-hand (driver’s side) driveshaft just to have the space to get the alternator out.
This is an involved job and, amongst the usual sockets and spanners, you will need the following specific tools:
    • Multimeter to test voltage getting to alternator
    • Decent Impact wrench (not absolutely necessary, but really helps, especially with wheel hub nut)
    • 30mm multi-point socket - for wheel hub nut
    • Torque wrench that goes up to at least 215Nm
    • 22mm open ended spanner - for serpentine belt tensioner
The video details the steps that you will need to take to replace a faulty alternator, but briefly it is:
    1. Test alternator to make sure that it is not getting charge when engine is running.
    2. O/S/F wheel off
    3. Hub nut off
    4. Wheel hub assembly partially disconnected from suspension strut (remove 2x 22mm bolts)
    5. Remove 2x 14mm bolts that hold ABS sensor cable and flexible brake line in place to allow enough slack to allow the end of the driveshaft to be removed from the wheel hub.
    6. Pop driveshaft out of wheel hub
    7. Remove 2x 14mm bolts that hold the driveshaft in its support mounting
    8. Prise apart driveshaft mounting apart to allow the driveshaft to be popped out of the gearbox
    9. Remove driveshaft completely
    10. Remove piece of plastic wheelarch shielding from in front of crankshaft wheel (to allow access to the serpentine belt)
    11. Using (long thin) 22mm open ended spanner, move the serpentine belt tensioner anti-clockwise (down)
    12. Take belt off of bottom (crankshaft) wheel and then off of the alternator wheel
    13. Disconnect negative cable from battery (to prevent any shocks)
    14. Undo the 10mm nut that holds the earth cable on to the top of the alternator
    15. Undo the 10mm nut that holds the cables to the very top of the alternator.
    16. Lift rubber cover away from plastic connector and push tab in, whilst pulling up to remove the plastic connector.
    17. Undo the 3x 14mm bolts that attach the alternator to the engine block
    18. Remove alternator - from under wheel arch
    19. Fit new alternator, remembering to tighten the 3x bolts and replace the cable holder, connecter, rubber cover, the earth cable and its plastic cover.
    20. Put serpentine belt back on - turning belt tensioner anti-clockwise to allow the slack to do this. (Belt routing diagram in video at 11:23)
    21. Put driveshaft back into the gearbox - aligning hole in top of mounting as it slides back it. Then tighten 2x 14mm bolts.
    22. Put driveshaft back into the wheel hub and loosely put 30mm hub nut in place
    23. Reconnect wheel hub to the suspension strut and tighten the two 22mm bolts
    24. Start car to test new alternator is working with multimeter - reading should be 14.xx volts
    25. Listen to ensure the serpentine belt is not squeaking/ chirping - reposition if this is the case
    26. Replace plastic wheelarch shielding (4x plastic push-type connectors)
    27. Reattach the 2x 14mm bolts holding flexible brake line and ABS sensor cable in place.
    28. Put wheel back on car and lower car to ground
    29. Tighten wheel hub nut to 215Nm
    30. Flatten the tab in the wheel hub nut to lock it in place
    31. Replace wheel and test drive car.

Hope these steps help people, as it's a tough enough job if you've never done it before.

    Great video.
For my Auris 2l D4D 2009, I have been able to get access by the top.
To be less in the dark in this area, I started to extract the plastic part at the bottom of the front windscreen + wipers arm.
And finally and easely, the windscreen wippers actuator and then the metal vat below. Around 30min for this first part..
Easy acces to the alternator connectors, the top screw and extraction + introduction.
From underneath the car → only 2 screws
Probably possible on other model with the same engine.
For the belt. I put the wrench by under and a strap locked on the front beam to maintain the pressure on the tensionner → I was alone and it's easier to put the belt correctly at the first attemp.
Remove the wheel for this point.
Don't hesitate to ask for more explanation.

Hey fair play. Great video. You just saved me at least an hour that would have been spent scratching my head trying to think of how to get it out without taking out the driveshaft (to inevitably then have to take it out) Thanks a million, you made what could have been a tricky enough job quite handy 👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks alot mate, you've been saving me alot of headaches except my driveshaft didn't wanna come out but a few hammer hits did the trick . I'd say the most difficult thing in this task would be to take of the alternaternator bolts and connectors wires cuz it's so tight in there

I managed to get it out without taking the driveshaft out. I took the bolts out the lower engine mounts and used a transmission jack to tilt the engine and it just came out 😅

Fair play. I couldn't see a way of doing it that way myself, but I'm glad you figured it out. Taking the driveshaft out wasn't too bad - as the video shows. But, I'm glad there are different solutions to the same problem. Thanks for letting me know.

Hi can I please ask which model verso this is? Mine is 2005 and the alternator just failed. This job looks massive but I've in the past removed wheel hubs off a small Yaris so I've a bit of similar experience - if this is the same model verso as mine I may well bite the bullet and go for it!

I changed my serpentine belt make today and it the same noise that at 14'46 in the video.
You explained in the video with a text what you did to stop the noise but i don't understand sorry. (I'm from France)
Can you explain it with other word plz. thx bro.

Hi, I had to loosen the belt and then reposition it. It wasn't perfectly straight the first time and that's what made the noise. After I repositioned the belt correctly the noise went away. I hope that does it for you.
