I did the same with my 2.4l toyota 2 years ago. Problem fixed. All pro techs said that VVTi had to be replaced (only several grand with labor) lol! Don't forget to properly reset the new tensioner by slightly rotating the crankshaft in the opposite direction. It will open the little hook on the tensioner and allow it to extend and self adjust.

That's what everyone always asks me. It has just got 100k last week. I work about 15 mins from home. I've driven it up the So Cal coast a few times but mostly to and from work. It's been great to me.
My f*%#ing hero I'm having this same problem in my 09 Matrix. The TSB on this advised replacing the whole timing system - an actual nightmare. Thanks a lot!
Even a brand new one will move by hand. It's supposed to. The only time that the tension increases is when it is installed and the oil going into the tensioner increases the pressure/ tension on the chain.
Hey, do you think a long drive where the oil is burned below the stick would cause the rattle to start? My 09rav4 is rattling a bit now after a 5k drive. Oil is below the stick so the oil needs a change. Hope it fixes the sound at the same time.
Good job bro, I have a 05 vibe pretty much as a matrix same engine . So when I start it's making the rattle sound like it's coming from pulleys I change power steering pump and new altenator and it makes same sound , so I guessing it's the timing chain is loose.
My car doing the same thing Toyota Venza 4 cylinder . I've checked everything under the hood and change heat shield, still have a loud rattling when first cranking up and when give it the gas
So you didn't replace the chain with a new one? And the tensioner magically got the slack out of the chain between the two gears? So that means there is no noise when a chain overlaps gear teeth to get tighter from the tensioner? That would be great if that was the case!

I'm between the vvti rattle or time chain lol I think it's the timing chain tho. It rattles on startup. Stops for a few seconds. Then randomly rattles. When I give it gas it rattles so I'ma check the timing chain when I get a chance
Questions for Nestor Auto Repair... Why did you use a socket and wrench to manually turn the engine to get the tensioner to release? Why didn't you just turn the engine using the ignition switch?

Not really if you did not add silicone you are good to use it again
Wassup Nestor I have a 2010 Camry 4 cly and I have the rattles upon cold start it’s sucks!
What’s the difference between the vvt cam gear rattle and the timing chain tensioner rattle?
Also if it would be the tensioner would I need to adjust the timing or double check the at any point?
Hello well for the vvt your will get a code and also the rattle will never go away ,, if there is no code for timing you don't need to adjust it just add the new tensoner
@@nestorautorepair but in the 2010 Model the tensioner is behind (inside) the timing cover?
Yes you are correct 2010 has it inside it will require to remove the side cover
@@nestorautorepair is it better just to go the hole timing chain kit since i would already be going thru the trouble?
Sure to be safe just do the new kit

should rotate counterclockwise for releasing tensioner hook.
No
Thank you. That helped me alot.
You're welcome, thanks for your feedback
Hearing an occasional rattle at idle.....not sure if it's a water pump going bad or this tensioner....it's on the same end of zthe engine as the belt drives. Scion xA first gen. Is there an easy way to tell which it is?
Where is the tensioner installed? It looked to be outside the block.
i have the Rattle noise I changed VVT-i filter, the old one is very good no carbon bullied but Rattle still there
You're a real one nester thank you

Hello. I have a 2003 Toyota Highlander 4 cylinder with 210K miles. It runs good no problems, but there is a ticking after I shut the vehicle off. What could it be?...and what is an overestimate of what it would cost for a repair shop to make the ticking go away? Thank you
I believe that's normal that's the catalytic converter cooling down
@@nestorautorepair SWEET! I'm an idiot with vehicles. Appreciate you man. Subscribing right now
Thanks boss , we are always learning boss

For a 2011 Toyota Camry: Engine Timing Chain Tensioner 13540-0V031
Did it ran like a top n not rattling anymore after a new tensioner installed?
The car come by last week still running strong no rattlering at all
My Highlander only makes noise after 10 minutes of running, changed the water pump, idler pulley, and belt tensioner, dam noise is still there.
It was the alternator. Hope this helps everyone.
Nice thanks for sharing Shane
I noticed my Yaris 07 making rattle noise only when accelerating and only when cold for first 6-7 minutes. Later almost gone. Could this be tensioner?
Most likely yes
excelente master!, ya tengo 2 trabajos de estos por hacer
Bien gracias , cobre Bien jijijiji
145k almost and it makes this rattle noise in park. It is louder with the hood open but quiet outside and inside the vehicle with hood closed. Is this common?
It can be many thin , one way to find out is by removing the belt and see if the noise still there , I have others video on Toyota making noise
So I don’t need a whole new chain? This tensioner should be able to solve it?
Corret just get the Tensioner and see
Just ordered one, thanks for the vid hopefully it’ll solve it.
Yes sir
@@nestorautorepair it didn’t work!
Were you able to find the error codes on engine. I have a rattling noise also on my 2007 corolla and it says fault code p0012.
Yes
Do you need to have the valve covers/spark plugs removed to replace this? Or can we just replace it without disturbing these items? Do you crank the engine in neutral? Thanks!
You can do without remove all of that. Can reach from behind the engine & remove and install the new.
can I replace the tensioner without removing the valve cover?
Yes you can
