I did the same with my 2.4l toyota 2 years ago. Problem fixed. All pro techs said that VVTi had to be replaced (only several grand with labor) lol! Don't forget to properly reset the new tensioner by slightly rotating the crankshaft in the opposite direction. It will open the little hook on the tensioner and allow it to extend and self adjust.
Nice work. You can also release the hook from the tensioner with a screwdriver since you had the valve cover off, which is not required to replace tensioner, but the factory service manual recommends it just to be 100% sure hook is released. I have the same engine with 226,000 miles. You can also rotate opposite direction like 15-20 deg which will tension the slack side of timing chain and press on tensioner, releasing hook. Then turn clockwise.
My f*%#ing hero I'm having this same problem in my 09 Matrix. The TSB on this advised replacing the whole timing system - an actual nightmare. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for this video,my 2005 corolla started making the rattling noise , now I know the problem. Mine the noise is there constant even when I have driven the car for long, the noise doesn't go away.
I just got my mom a 2009 scion xb and it's making crazy noise and it's has great power! But that noise! She gone love it! I was gone change the whole engine thank you so much!
That's what everyone always asks me. It has just got 100k last week. I work about 15 mins from home. I've driven it up the So Cal coast a few times but mostly to and from work. It's been great to me.
So you didn't replace the chain with a new one? And the tensioner magically got the slack out of the chain between the two gears? So that means there is no noise when a chain overlaps gear teeth to get tighter from the tensioner? That would be great if that was the case!
Even a brand new one will move by hand. It's supposed to. The only time that the tension increases is when it is installed and the oil going into the tensioner increases the pressure/ tension on the chain.
Hey, do you think a long drive where the oil is burned below the stick would cause the rattle to start? My 09rav4 is rattling a bit now after a 5k drive. Oil is below the stick so the oil needs a change. Hope it fixes the sound at the same time.
Good job bro, I have a 05 vibe pretty much as a matrix same engine . So when I start it's making the rattle sound like it's coming from pulleys I change power steering pump and new altenator and it makes same sound , so I guessing it's the timing chain is loose.
My car doing the same thing Toyota Venza 4 cylinder . I've checked everything under the hood and change heat shield, still have a loud rattling when first cranking up and when give it the gas
Lifters pressurize with oil inside them.. hence hydraulic lifters.. I’m pretty sure you gotta prime em before hand in a cup filled with oil and u squeeze em until you cant then put the pin in em and install..
Does that noise happened in the cold weather or it happens all the time. I have similar noise on my 2009 Corolla but not sure it is starter or chain. The noise sound like, when car starting and I try t start again like starter gear hit flywheel gear but not 100% sure. So far, It seems like only happen in cold or car stayed over night. After car warm up, no more start up noise. Thanks for the video. Thanks in advance.👍
I'm between the vvti rattle or time chain lol I think it's the timing chain tho. It rattles on startup. Stops for a few seconds. Then randomly rattles. When I give it gas it rattles so I'ma check the timing chain when I get a chance
That chain looks really loose, so I’d imagine it’s got a constant rattle right? My rattles for a split second on start up. Do you think it would be worth me bothering with it at the moment or just keep a ear out to see if it gets worse then fix it? Like I said, it’s only on start for about a second then no rattle and smooth operation. I have the 2013 Toyota Corolla.
I think you should replace the tensioner ASAP. If it keeps getting looser you’re gonna have metal on metal and pieces of the sprocket are going to break off and end up in your oil. Then you have to replace the sprockets too and that’s an all day job maybe even two for some people! $$$

Questions for Nestor Auto Repair... Why did you use a socket and wrench to manually turn the engine to get the tensioner to release? Why didn't you just turn the engine using the ignition switch?

Ben, did you find a fix to your issue?? Please help me if you did. I think I have a similar issue. It comes and goes. Even if I restart the engine. Strange. I checked my vvti solenoid and cleaned it. Works perfectly when checking with electric current
@Ben Teyssen
Did you find the problem. And solved?
Is there such thing as overturning the engine causing too much tension? when releasing the hook?
Not at all
@@nestorautorepair gotcha, thanks for the reply. Doing this soon.
Ok best luck boss
Can this be done without removing the valve cover?
Yes , I just remove the cover to confirm the problem and the fix
@@nestorautorepair unfortunately this didn't cure my problem.
It did get a little quieter but, I'm gonna have to change the VVT sprockets.
Sir i have 2007 toyota with 1zzfe engine . When is stop car or in neutral then i heard a noise like a diesel engine plz refer me that's the noise of tensioner also ?
Mmmmm let me send you another toyota that I fix with a similar noise but it was not the same fix

Will I need to re time the engine after changing the timing chain tensioner?
No you don't just rotate the engine like 4 times
@@nestorautorepair thank you
You're welcome
oil pushes the rod not the spring
When You give it gas does it make louder noise before you you fix the problem ?
Yes sir it did
Has anyone tried to replace the VTC actuator spring with one from Spring-Start VTC?
I would of changed the vvti , cam gear most definitely if I was to do all what you did and waterpump , then it's pretty much good 4 remains of it's life.
Mine rattles only between 2200 and 3000 rpm, top engine rattle, could this be it? It's most present when at a steady speed on the freeway
More likely your upper timing chain guide is work out , take off the valve cover and check it out before replacing the tensioner
@@nestorautorepair also the engine has been sputtering a lot lately at red lights not sure if it's related
Should have check if the ⛓️ skip because of the tension been so weak.
Nice work!! And, it's the same for a Scion xd 2008 ??
Yes sir Same, thanks for the feedback
Do you have to change valve cover head gasket?
Is recommended yes, but it it was not leaking don't worry about it, just add a small bit of atv on the small crack where the engine meet , some engine 2 corner some engine 4 corner
2010 Vibe is making that horrible rattle sound too. Hopefully, this is the problem. Great video!
Chain is maybe ratting, I am witnessing the same on my 22 year old toyota, hence why im watching this sort of content.
@@Teknakill it was the VVT sprocket rattling.
@@dealerauctionnightmare4689what happens if you don't fix it?
the rattling starts about 30 seconds after starting the engine on cold, is it a chain?
Oil pump to slow
@@nestorautorepair What should be done in this case?
Bad timing chain tensioner is culprit which requires replacement in VVTI engines
Yes
So you turn it one whole turn clock wise?
Yes
Did you had power loss before you fixed it? Because my Yaris has a rattle and has power loss as well
Not really
the tensioner is easy to compress ,you can do it easy with just 2 finger's, you do not need a press to do it.
Correct
Doesn't the timing get off when you crank the pulley with the car off?
No
Not sure if the tensioner is my problem, the rattle is not very loud and only lasts a second but I can hear it and it's annoying lol
Adonde te encuentras amigo??
Hola en Sterling va
@@nestorautorepair yo vivo en Virginia tambien veo q eres un buen mecanico estoy a 2.40 horas de sterling
Oh gracias,, donde tu vibes?
Damn I did this but instead turned the pulley clockwise with out the serpentine belt on.And when I turned on my vehicle a knocking noise on the engine started up. Is my engine done for or can I re-do the procedure again but this time how you showed it on here?
Wow , ufff I'm not sure if your noise is coming from internal
It’s coming from the inside. I took of the top cover and my chain had a slack on it I’m guessing that’s where the noise is coming from?
Mmmmm ok but did you fix it the way I did it with the valve off so you can see if you did it t correct ?
Im about to re-do the whole process but this time I’m going to turn the engine clockwise with the serpentine belt on since I didn’t do it like that the first time. I’ll keep you updated
Ok thanks
Were you able to find the error codes on engine. I have a rattling noise also on my 2007 corolla and it says fault code p0012.
Yes
