  • Step 1: Prepare your vehicle
Ensure the car is parked on a level surface and turned off. Open the hood and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent any electrical mishaps during the process.
    Step 2: Access the alternator
In the Avensis D4D from 2003 to 2015, the alternator is typically located at the rear of the engine, making it accessible from underneath the car. Raise the front of the car using a jack and securely support it with jack stands. Then, crawl under the vehicle to access the alternator.
Step3: disconnect the ball joint from the control arm as to disconnect the drive shaft to remove.
Step 4: Remove the drive shaft using a 30 mm multi socket on the axel lock nut, and 14mm rachet or spanner to remove the drive shaft holder.
Step5: Pull out the drive shaft from the wheel assemble, get a container to catch any oil that might escape from the gear box when removed from gear box.
    Step 5: Remove the belt
Locate the belt routing diagram usually found on the hood or near the radiator. Study it to understand t6: path of the serpentine belt and its tensioner. Use a wrench or belt tensioner tool to relieve tension on the belt by rotating the tensioner in the appropriate direction. Slide the belt off the alternator pulley and carefully release the tensioner.
    Step 6:Disconnect electrical connections
Identify the electrical connections attached to the alternator. These typically include a thick wire attached with a nut or bolt and one or more electrical connectors. Remove the nut or bolt securing the wire and disconnect the electrical connectors. If necessary, label or mark the connectors for easy reinstallation.
Step 7: Remove the mounting bolts
The alternator is held in place with one or more mounting bolts. Use a socket or wrench to loosen and remove these bolts. Keep track of the bolts and their location for reassembly.
    Step 8: Remove the alternator
With the mounting bolts removed, carefully slide the alternator out of its bracket. Be cautious of any remaining wires or connectors that may still be attached.
Step 9: Install the new alternator
Take the new alternator and position it in the bracket. Make sure it aligns properly with the mounting holes. Reinstall the mounting bolts and tighten them securely.
    Step 10: Reconnect electrical connections
Reconnect the electrical connectors and the thick wire to the new alternator. Ensure they are properly secured.
Step 11: Install the serpentine belt
Refer to the belt routing diagram and install the serpentine belt back onto the alternator pulley. Use the belt tensioner tool or wrench to relieve tension and slide the belt over the pulley. Release the tensioner slowly, allowing it to apply proper tension to the belt.
    Step 12: Double-check everything
Ensure all connections are securely tightened and properly routed. Confirm that the belt is properly aligned and tensioned. Verify that no tools or equipment are left in the engine bay.
Step 13: Lower the vehicle and reconnect the battery
Safely lower the vehicle off the jack stands using a jack. Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

Best video I have seen concerning a car repair. Clear concise and to the point. Well done that man. Saved me a whole load of headaches.

I just wanted to say thanks for all these informative videos, I will tackle anything if I have half an idea what to do and without seeing you do yours, I wouldn't have known where to start. Watched your video about ten times while waiting for the new part to arrive £220 alternator, £16 30mm 12 point deep socket and £71 new gearbox oil and a transfer bottle, so just a smidge over £300 which has to be a huge saving over garage prices especially with labour costs for such a long job, took me 6 hours. Things I expected to be hard were easy and things I thought would be simple were tricky and awkward. The driveshaft popped out no problems but undoing the wire cable on top of the alternator and refastening it must have taken 40 minutes, anyway thanks again for sharing the knowledge it is much appreciated, all the best to you and yours.

I was considering trying this myself as I'm broke but realise by your patience and knowledge (and at times you also needed a little assistance) there's no way I could do it. At least I appreciate your camera work and knowledge and understand where the money goes. Many thanks for an informative video.

I was going to try it too. But I guess I'll have to pay the expert. It's not as easy as I earlier imagined.
Cheers to this very educative video.

    Great video.
For my Auris 2l D4D 2009, I have been able to get access by the top.
To be less in the dark in this area, I started to extract the plastic part at the bottom of the front windscreen + wipers arm.
And finally and easely, the windscreen wippers actuator and then the metal vat below. Around 30min for this first part..
Easy acces to the alternator connectors, the top screw and extraction + introduction.
From underneath the car → only 2 screws
Probably possible on other model with the same engine.
For the belt. I put the wrench by under and a strap locked on the front beam to maintain the pressure on the tensionner → I was alone and it's easier to put the belt correctly at the first attemp.
Remove the wheel for this point.
Don't hesitate to ask for more explanation.

Your comment has been a great help for my 2007 Auris D4D 2.0. Thank you very much. I plan to change the belt also when I put the new alternator.
Do you think it is better to do it from the bottom by removing the wheel? Do you see no possibility to do it from the top?
      Thank you very much!

God, it's a right dose to fit this. Mine failed at 96k. Brendan White down on Douglas St did a great job rebuilding the original on mine. I'd highly recommend him actually. Great video, as always!

? on my Auris D4D 177hp, the alternator comes out from the top... (by dismantling the windshield wipers, the windshield wiper motor, the plastics under the windshield and the sheet metal underneath. and also a small box (relay??) on the left, and it works!! it's less work than dismantling the gimbal!! maybe it also works on the avensis D4D??

Do you have to completely remove the drive belt to remove the alternator or just loosen it?
    Thanks for the great video

That top alternator bolt btw....fuck me, I couldn't get any leverage with my tools from above or below until I had the sweetspot angle after about an hour and a half...also had the genius idea of removing the bolts before the belt so now the alternator's just wobbling when i press the tensioner and dropped my 12mm in the engine bay somewhere 🤣

Do you think its possible to get at the wires an test it without removing the drive shaft? I had a new alternator fitted but the fault has reoccured so want to test everything with a multimeter

Yes take off the wipers, and the plastic trim along the wipers, and under that is a metal structure to hold on the wiper motor there is about 6 10mm bolts holding it on, removing them the whole metal frame comes off with wiper motor attached and you can get access directly onto the alternator wires

back street garage, never go to a dealer, charge about 60 an hour, that's basically 3x cheaper on labour there and just as good a job
