Thanks for sharing this. I just did this for a dude that lost his key. 1994 F150. I used a fresh 1/2" drill bit after busting the outer key gaurd off. Drilling was easy with a beast drill. NOTE: I did not drill the pin underneath as suggested in the video, that would risk damaging the column housing. Once I drilled into the cylinder, I kept testing with a screw driver for movement. Once I could get it to rotate, I pressed a pick on the release pin. Once the pin was loose, I knew I was in the on position and pulled the cylinder out. Easy peasy.
Whelp, just got my papa’s 91 from my Mema today and she can’t find the keys so thanks for the video. New ignition with set of keys is like 20 bucks. Gotta be cheaper than paying someone to try and unlock and make a new key for it. Thanks for the video
I did it today. Got the ignition off amazon for 11 dollars and it took 30 minutes to put in. Dewalt dcd996 drill with a 1/2 cobalt bit cut like butter. Philip screws hold the cover on the bottom.
I've always used a smaller bit just big enough to let the pins drop out. Throw a screwdriver in and turn to on. Imagine it takes about the same amount of time. First time I did it I burned the brushes out of a new drill.😂 #brushless4life
Exactly.. I'm a locksmith. Our company is still in business going on 40 years. For those who know how, impress a key with a blank and a pipin file. Turn it to on and push the release. NO drilling the release pin. Also, the key has to be in the ON position for the tail piece to clear the locking plate in the bottom of the column. Last resort is to drill the shear line then turn it to ON and remove it.
Only young people worry about things like that, in order to not look so foolish when you walk into a parts store you need to say "I have a 1988" first thing out of your mouth! When attempting any self repairs, the driver of the vehicle should know the model year, the manufacturer, and you can save a lot of time if you would copy the vin or serial number and take that to the parts store.
Why do you need to drill out the small hole if you already drilled out the cylinder and was able to turn it to the ON position? I need to do this but if I don’t have to drill the small hole I rather not. But if I have to I will lol
I actually have been working on replacing the ignition cover. Someone try to steal my truck and tore mine to pieces. Got one from the junk yard with a random ignition cylinder in it. I drilled out only the small pin and the cylinder does not come out.
The main thing to know is that without the key turned to the on position the little pin will hold it in place. Also without the key turned to the on position the rotating shaft would also hold the cylinder in place.
drilled through the ignition cylinder not all the way but it’s jammed up rlly good on mine tried drilling out the pin below think i might have missed it and might have needed up the steering collum any tips anybody please could really use !!!
@@renefuentez7229 I have a 3/8" cobalt bit, and my dewalt cobalt bit set. I see the location for the hole on the bottom. After that it looks pretty simple.
@@renefuentez7229 I usually dont mess with older vehicles because of the lishi pick set limitations. But this job is for a family member that needs his f250. I have messing with transponders and prox keys for so long that I for about the old generation key systems
OK, a guy did this to mine. I've been using screwdriver since, hoping for time to replace cylinder. Also, screwdriver no longer works. Ignition stuck in running. Stopped on its own, cuz got hot due to coolant leak. Disconnected battery. IDK how to turn screwdriver I have 2nd steering column I can cannibalize for parts. Also have replacement cylender. Or you could just use a punch and hammer on the lock pin, hit the lock pin twice and the cylinder will pop right out
A wood chisel and a hammer helped me to spin the ignition after I drilled it out because it was still a litlle frozen. Took 1 min after that.
