He didn't mention it, but if you noticed, he disconnected the ground or negative terminal. Always safer that way, as when disconnecting the positive or hot cable, it's too easy to accidentally ground your tool against any metal near the battery and get a nasty electrical arc, possibly even destroying the battery !
