- This video illustrates how to replace the Ignition Tumbler and Key on a 1995 Ford F-150 Pick-up Truck.
These steps are similar for all F-series Trucks built between the years of 1992 to 1997.
The most common issues related to the Ignition Key and Lock assembly include: Key is hard to turn, key feels loose, key is hard to remove, back and forth play when you turn the Ignition Key on or off.

thanks so much for the great video. the replacement switch has a CAUTION on that is incorrect! As you mention in your video, albeit briefly. you must rotate the new switch with key to retract the nipple for installation!

Drill out the pin or the ignition
Take a drill bit that's about the same size as the pain and just driller out

Pop the plastic cover and hammer a flat head screwdriver into it I just did this
A hammer and flat screwdriver... that's how I had to remove mine after losing the keys.
Nice, the ignition cylinder on a 93 messed up in the late 90’s on my pickup. Ford wanted a few hundred to fix it. 20+ years later it cost less than $20 and takes 3 minutes to fix.

Hello l have a Ford F150 96 model.l notice that in your video when you pull out the ignition switch there where not two small parts where missing. The first part is a green flat circlar washer and second is as small flat rectangle metal shape washer. Do you know the correct name of these parts?

after installing new lock cyl, my 92 tilt wheel wouldn't lock with key off. Fixed it by seeing at 2:48 in video the gear position & pulled new lock cyl out again and mine was correct. Mine had a blue lock thin plastic washer type keeper that I had to twist to get out and the gear was under it. then got screwdriver and slid the yellowish/white plastic 'rack' TO THE LEFT (maybe one tooth) and reinstalled the gear + blue keeper + lock cyl and Now My Steering Wheel locks again with the key out! The GEAR POSITION AND THE RACK POSITION DEFINITELY CONTROL when the steering wheel locks. When I say 'the rack', it is the toothed piece that the gear engages with and when the key & gear turn, it pushes this rack down the column to activate the electrical switch. By MOVE TO LEFT I mean looking down into the lock cyl hole (move left and away from electrical switch /away from steering column base). Had to watch that section of your video 3 times, but eventually I got it on the first removal of lock cyl. yeah seems easy, but only after I watched a dozen other youtubes and googled for over an hour. thanks for the video and helping me STUMBLE ON TO THE FIX. Hope this helps someone.

What if i cant turn the key into the on position
Mine seems to not let me go all the way back, far enough to pull the key out. The pin pops into place but it seems that it needs just a tiny bit more to allow the new key to come out.

Do you have any idea why when I try inserting my new ignition switch it doesn't act correctly. It worked fine before it was just broke on the outside where you put your fingers to operate the switch. It would just spin so I always had to like it up for the key to go in. But the switch itself worked fine. Accessorie, off, on, resisted start if that makes sense. Any tips would be great. Do you think I should go to O'Reilly, napa, or a actual parts store? This switch I got is off Amazon. It looks the same but was cheap yk.
We dont have the key I can see the spot where you push the pin in I used a pic and pushed it and it moved a little way out and stopped is there anyway to remove it without the key and to not drill it out and ruin it?
What if you DON"T have the ORIGINAL GEAR that you move from old to new?? Is the gear required for switch to function correctly?
I lost the keys for are truck I took off the cover and pushed in the pin it pulls out about a 1/2 inch and stops and wont come out any further anyway or suggestion to get it out to replace
I did exactly the same thing but now my truck doesn't have any power...any suggestions why?? Wont start. No power no lights. I didn't disconnect anything just took out ignition and put it back in again and now I have no power.

I didn't have the little gear at the end of the tumbler...I guess it broke off at some point.. dont see one on the inside either....that would explain why the ignition switch moves all over the place

You have to go to a locksmith and have them rekey--probably the doors--so they match.

i almost got stuck at the gas station last night... but if i replace the ignition, i want to keep the keys - i have all the remote dodads, and those suckers are expensive to replace. can you take the 'guts' out and keep the old tumbler bits?
I did all this but when I put the new one in, it wont turn at all?! Any idea what the problem could be? The key is in the run position

I just forced mine. You will be replacing the cylinder anyway. Key in it would not turn cylinder, so I forced turned it with some channel locks. It sheared off the key in the cylinder but I was able to then turn/start vehicle then with a screw driver. I would just try and force/brake the lock this way with some channel locks. Try it first without the key in there if you don't want the key broke in half. YMMV

The key won`t turn the switch . The switch is worn out . That`s why I`m replacing the switch . How do you replace switch if it won`t turn to on position ?

Here's a question I broke my key and it's not the key switch I have a feeling that its the gear that you showed in the video! They sell the rod with the gearing on it but I can't find anyone local who sells that round gear! Any suggestions????

Wouldn't you also have to replace the key cylinders in the doors? Unless of course you want 2 different keys: on for the ignition and one for the door.
How about - take the new cylinder to a locksmith and have it rekeyed to match the doors before you install it?
I bought some parts and grandson went out switched out the ingnition tumbler and a new gear selecter gear shift about 20 minutes...
It's a 2 minute job if you have the old key

Take a flat head screw driver and a hammer. Knock the screw driver up inside the key hole, turn the ignition switch to the on position, then remove the switch/lock.

Same here. I've been searching for the key for weeks. Truck is parked on the street. Got to get it moved before any of my neighbors complain.
i hammered a small(glasses repair kit)flat tip screwdriver into the cyclinder on the tumbler side and another on the other tumbler side(since the key has teeth on both sides),and was able to turn it.the cyclinder won't be used anyway-you are replacing it.hope it helps guys.
@@johnoktavec hey just read ur comment, it might be what I need to do since I can't turn the key to the on position. So you basically stuck a screwdriver in the cylinder, and that got it to turn somehow? Mine won't turn even with the key in

@@davidhughes4812 I realize this is an old post but maybe it will help somebody that has this problem. Make sure the vehicle is in "Park". I couldn't turn it to the "Off" position until I did this.
If you have your old key you don't have to take anything apart

removal is easy if you have the key if not it is a bitch.
