AIR CONDITIONER INSTALL IN A SLIDER WINDOW, SIMPLE, EASY AND INEXPENSIVE

  • This is a very simple, inexpensive and easy way to install an Air Conditioner in a slider window without buying an A/C made for slider windows. All that is needed is a 2 things a steel bar cut to the size of the window plus 3-4 inches and a piece of plexiglass, glass or cardboard. The steel bar and the plexiglass/glass can be purchased and cut to size at Lowes or Home Depot. I have used this method for over 6 years and it is so simple but works perfectly.

Thats how you make a video, no stupid logo intros, songs, music, build ups, needless preamble, just helpful and to the point! Will try this; sounds clutch, easy enough to modify a little if needed but great start point.
Thank you! You the man Michael

If you really want to know why people want complicated solutions I will answer for myself: I got considerable satisfaction in building and optimizing my installation. Some of us enjoy building and working with their hands. I truly got more satisfaction building in and the heat than sitting in front of my unit enjoying cool air. The fun is in the building! th-cam.com/video/Q8aR52DqFWc/w-d-xo.html.Maybe that is why I am an Engineer...

I’m conflicted on this. This method looks super easy which is very appealing. But I live on the third floor of an old building. I’m not sure I trust my aluminium window frames to hold the weight of an air con. If I was on the first floor I would do it this way for sure. But I’m thinking of doing the wooden framed version just to be safe.

I am sorry for not taking the time to answer several questions from viewers. I didn't realize the number of people using my idea. I am going to answer some questions and give you further information now. I live in Montana and remove the A/C in the early fall every year.
You can get the bar, plexi-glass and glass all from Lowe's and they will cut them for you.
The unit you see in my video is a 12,000 btu unit.
THE STEEL BAR This is all that holds the A/C in the window.
1/4 "or 3/8 " in diameter and at least 2" longer then the width of the slider window opening.
The bar goes against the window frame and against the window that doesn't move.
Ed Smith suggested drilling a hole for the bar in the window frame for added security, which is a good idea especially for heavy A/C's.
The bottom of the A/C has a lip on it and this goes outside past the window track. PLACING THE A/C OUTSIDE OF THIS TRACK IS WHERE YOU NEED TO USE EXTREME CAUTION OR GET SOME HELP, BECAUSE IF YOU LET GO BEFORE PLACING THE BAR IT WILL FALL OUT.
Placing the A/C here allows it to drain as it will be at a slight angle sloping out.

I don't really understand the steel bar part. Is that to hold in window in the piece that sticks up on the top? Is it just a gravity thing? I did this last year and used a piece of oak trim. Regardless, I have vinyl windows and am concerned about scratching the vinyl under the ac.
      Any wisdom?

    • @friendofp.24
      @friendofp.24 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@mj-ls7qr8xp3n Forgive me for I do not know the terminology of anything, I just want my room to be cold, but... The bar is there to hold the AC unit in place and keep it from falling out. When the bar is placed, it falls down to the top of the unit due to gravity, but the bar extends inside the window frame slits and the top part of the AC unit is caught by the bar, holding it in place. It should be slightly angled downward outside, which is good so that rain doesn't get caught up and leak into your house. When you look for an AC unit online, the pictures don't show this top part because it's a separate part that must be screwed into the top of the unit. I'm fairly certain all units come with this separate top part that you screw in, which you can then use with the metal bar to hold the unit in place. I've seen other videos where instead of using the included top part which may be lacking in strength to hold up the AC, they make their own out of metal L pieces. That may be a bit extra but if Lowe's or Home Depot could do it for you (all it is is just drilling a couple holes and cutting the piece down) then I would suggest you go for it.
      TL;DR: It's just a gravity thing.
