This was cake for Hope. This guy made comedy and ran shows for troops in the Pacific fairly close to enemy forces.

Even with my cynical view I miss everyone of the them. When they retired or deceased we lost the best of the best.
They knew to be civil and they were respected for their work. I just wish I could revisit that era.
This was wonderful! I'd watch the whole show if it was here. Love those old stars. Peck had so much class. Wayne so amiable. Hope's racy jokes were clever and ahead of their time.

( Just to make those designers get their names out there, like the "average" person could wear their junk)!! And, wasn't it so much more decent not to see the morons tottering out on stage in those gross 5 inch stilleto heals!!? The awards shows have sunk to new lows. OH, and changing hosts every time when they are picking the bottom of the barrel....with no talent. And, another thing, get rid of the FEMALE announcers they have been using lately!! Presentation should always go with the current times with homage paid to the past. I liked the Seth McFarlane opening - fresh, not stiff, comedy weaved with some singing/dancing covering multiple art forms within the event. Also there's always room to mix old school meets new school.

Gregory Peck, one of the greatest U.S. actors ever, was a vocal critic of the war in Vietnam. To his credit, his son (Stephen) did not try to use his father's name to get out of service. Stephen Peck served in Vietnam in the 1st Marine Division from 1969 to 1970. So he was probably still in Vietnam while this aired.
I have always been a huge Bob Hope fan, was so sad the day he died, but what a great person, actor, comedian, family man he was. Always in our hearts.
It's so sad how much Hollywood has changed for the worse since the days of high caliber people like Gregory Peck, Fred Astaire, John Wayne etc.

This was one of those rare times of the AA trying to pick ONE greatest acting performance by a man when every single actor deserved their own Oscar. How in the world could anybody pick 'the best' performance between Sir Richard Burton, Sir Peter O'Toole, the phenomenal John Wayne, Superb Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman?
Duke should have gotten an Oscar long before True Grit, but on this night, they ALL deserved the best acting Oscar. Period.
Wayne should have received the Best Actor award for his leading performance in "The Searchers" in 1956, but neither the film nor Wayne were even nominated for an award -- undoubtedly one of the biggest oversights in Academy history. Yul Brynner won Best Actor for "The King and I," and the utterly forgettable comedy "Around the World in 80 Days" won Best Picture.
The Duke should have also gotten the award for Best Actor for portraying Sgt. Stryker in Sands of Iwo Jima. At least we was nominated for that one.
Shows the Oscars are a popularity contest and the voters are emotional people, just like the rest of us. You vote for what moves you at the time, not really for what is great or timeless. The winners lists show just that. Yes, the Searchers is amazing and John should have won his award for that, though True Grit is my all time favorite movies for so many reasons.

The jokes Bob Hope told were not mean spirited but simply a humourous way to convey a sharp turn in movie content. Looking back in many ways people were less uptight about the many changes that were taking place than they are now 44 years later. I enjoyed the intro black & white look back at previous 41 Oscar evenings.

This is the time Tarantino's film Once Upon Time In Hollywood took place. Well, 1969 but the Manson murders were in August several months after the Academy Awards ceremony. They showed Brando in the black and white footage in the opening when he actually showed up at the awards. Midnight Cowboy is the start of classic films over the next several years with The Godfather arriving in 1972. The Sting in 1973. It was an amazing decade and Watergate was still just a hotel in Washington, DC.
This Oscar ceremony took place on April 7, 1970 to honor the films of 1969.

Today, the Dolby 🎭 is the 🏡 of the Academy Awards, and has been there since 2002. I just wish the Academy Awards could have a larger 90-piece orchestra conducted by Bridgit Mendler and a big opening number and a big closing number every year! In addition, Phillip Heyes could be the director and Bob Joles could be the announcer!

Bob Hope was superbly funny! The Oscars used to be one of my favorite awards programs, but the quality of the show has deteriorated over the years.

Duke Wayne got the biggest applause as did Fed Astaire & Myrna Loy, old Hollywood but for the contemporaries Liz Taylor as always trounced all of the other stars.

Finally Bob Hope's writers delivered an "edgier" monologue than those of previous AA shows he hosted. (A number of "double-entendres" which they were able to get past the censors.) BTW notice the disclaimer at the start of the show by the network (4:18)

4:00 LIZA AND VINCENTE, Liza Minnelli absolutely deserved to win the Oscar for “The Sterile Cuckoo”, great to think that only three years later she would return and win the best actress Oscar for “Cabaret”
The Sterile Cuckoo is good and Lisa's good in it but Jane Fonda should have won for They Shoot Horses Don't They.

For those that don't get the reference: " The man in the Hathaway shirt". Was an advertising campaign , by Ogilvy and Mather ( still taught in business schools). The Hathaway shirt company model was given an eye patch in the print ads. It made him famous, and sold alot of shirts.
