That's bipolar disorder in its unmedicated form. He knew how to corral it and push it down the best stream. Of course, there are the depressive episodes that couldn't have been easy for him.
@@bigjohn3928 I just retired after a career as a therapist -- clinical social worker in private practice. Robin Williams, as we see him in the video here, is what Bipolar I Disorder looks like with no medication. The person is manic and speaks rapidly. Thoughts race and Robin Williams had the talent of seeing humor all over so the world had the benefit of those rapid thoughts aimed toward humor. They tend to speed in their cars, start many projects and then turn their attention to another project before getting very far with the previous one, they may sleep only 3 or 4 hours per night when in a manic phase. If they have a "contrary" personality, they tend to get into frequent arguments. They may gamble or otherwise use money foolishly. It's really difficult for someone to live with this disorder unless they are medicated and see a therapist regularly. The meds aren't so pleasant for them to take. Many patients have told me that they'd rather deal with the consequences of their poor choices when in a manic phase than feel sluggish and droopy on the meds. There also exists a disorder called Bipolar II Disorder, which is a milder form but still quite troublesome. Don't confuse Bipolar Disorder with someone who switches moods frequently. That's a common misconception because when people hear "manic-depression" or "mood swings" they easily think of someone who has problems with widely varying moods within one day. This isn't how it works with Bipolar Disorder, either I or II. The switch from a manic phase to a depressive phase doesn't happen quickly or frequently, certainly rarely within one day. Those folks generally have a personality disorder of one type or another, often Borderline Personality Disorder. As for Robin Williams, he may very well have abused street drugs. I just don't know much about him. But that isn't what we saw of him when he was performing. Someone using cocaine, for example, wouldn't usually be able to think as clearly as Williams was able to do, especially as a young man. People with Bipolar I Disorder don't like the prescription drugs used to stabilize their moods so they often self-medicate with alcohol, marijuana, or something else. It's pretty hard to hold down a normal job with that kind of mental health problem. Think of someone who is intoxicated with alcohol. They might be a little funny but I can't imagine them being able to carry on like Robin Williams could. If he abused substances I imagine that must have been when he was not on public display because that wouldn't have been too successful. I hope this provides you some insight. Gosh, I really miss Robin Williams. What a rare talent.
Johnny Carson was the king of late night there will never be a host at his level of greatness. The two guests are of the same caliber They will never be replaced ever.

Sorry a a, you have no sense of humor or aren't sharp enough to get their humor. Couldn't be too bright as you can't spell either the lady you are replying to or other words in your stupid reply. Robin Williams is never ancient humor because he always reacts to the conversation at hand. Perhaps you are not getting any of it or definitely the first part. Jonathan Winters has written hysterical books and stories and Robin was a genius too smart for the people he had to deal with who were as dumb as a rock. I'd like to know who you think is funny? No doubt a simpleton. Watch "What Dreams may Come". It stars Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding Jr. I love that movie. Another movie from Robin that I enjoy is Awakenings with Robert Deniro. This is another movie that shows Williams' dramatic acting skills.
This sounds like an excellent idea! Include Aladdin, his Jeannie is the bomb. The animators waited until he was done to do that portion because he was going so fast...🤣🤣🤣

I remember watching this the very same night it aired. My Dad and I were in tears from laughing as Williams and Winters essentially took over the Tonight Show. This was, IMO, the funniest moment ever captured on television-two comedy geniuses feeding off one another and spitting out the results minute after minute. I didn’t want it to end, it was that good. RIP to both of these wonderful funny men.
Robin and Jonathan were both generational talents. Watching either of them perform was amazing but having them both together was nothing short of magical. They gave us the blessing of true laughter.
This is one of my favorite Robin Williams interviews. He’s here with his mentor and model. J. Winters isn’t quite as lightning-fast as Robin, and certainly less manic, but he has the same off-the-cuff ability to connect ideas for maximum effect, all without canned jokes. This had to be a real pleasure for both comedians.
I miss Johnnie Carson , please put his reruns back on prime time . Those who are on now are disgusting and sick, so is every one who would waste their time watching such immortal crap.
Depression isn't so much about being sad but being devoid of happiness and feeling. Imagine not finding joy in anything and how much effort it would take to try and create it around you in the hopes of coping. That's what I think he did and while it was likely therapeutic in nature it's a battle you can face your whole life. It will exhaust you and if you let your guard down overwhelm you. It's why it needs to be seen as serious as other life destroying diseases. If it was just a matter of being sad all the time I think it may be more bearable since at least in knowing sadness you'll be able to know happiness. When you feel nothing and are told you're just sad it's like telling a blind person their eyes are just closed.
He had a degenerative neurological brain disease a kind of Alzheimer’s very aggressive and it was diagnosed and he was basically told it was untreatable he decided to check himself out instead of just becoming a mere shadow of what he had been. I’m not a big fan of assisted suicide but this is one case where it would’ve been warranted he shouldn’t have had to die alone like that you were a great talent Mr. Williams. When he won the Oscar for awakenings my mother and I laughed and cried because my mother was a nurse and was there for that whole situation and she said it was almost exactly like the movie showed it. these poor people locked inside their own minds came out for one summer and then went back.
I watched a bio of Robin recently that his wife helped produce. It was so sad that he could feel his brain become different. Look for clips of him in about 2011 or 2012 and you can see the difference in him. The documentary talked about the Night at the Museum 2 movie and he struggled through filming that. His wife marveled at the fact that NO ONE from the cast or crew talked to the press about his condition because they all loved and respected him.
You can tell how much Robin loves and respects Jonathan Winters. The looks and how he stays quiet and lets Jonathan have his moment. He idolizes him, that's clear as day.
I've read that RW actually patterned his style after Johnnie Winters' - but on speed at 10X JW's pace. They were both great. Never see their like again. {sigh}

14:26 “We lost the fort! The Indians were sober! We were drunk, this time!” Jonathan Winters and Robin Williams on Johnny Carson, watching him laugh at two comedic geniuses. No rude interruptions from the host!
Winters, a singular comic talent, was the only person who could best Williams (who was a genius) at that time, and Williams knew it and adored him. Carson, great and powerful, just had to sit back and let them go.
No stopping either one of these Comedic Geniuses...& Carson couldn't & didn't even try...he was SO enamored himself & cracking up that all he could do is watch them & their mental game!! Comedy/adlib at it's finest.

I had to kill men, women and children because I was ordered to do that!!!!!! There was no "hero's welcome back" infact, people hated me, kicked, beat, called me a murderer. I'm not sure we should glorify zombies. I think you're just supposed to shoot them in the head. In fact, shame on anyone who gets a zombie virus and doesn't shoot themselves in the head before they reanimate.
@Philip Parker Nobody is glorifying the fact that he was sick and committed suicide, they are acknowledging his immense talent. He didn't commit suicide because things got tough, he had Lewy Body disease, a form of dementia related to Parkinson's that in his case affected much of his brain (as documented by the autopsy) , it affects your whole thought process and decision making (like deciding to take your life), causes hallucinations, paranoia (which it did in his case), etc. My Father has Lewy Body Disease but luckily in his case it hit him much later in life. It is tragic that RW committed suicide and you should simply pray for his soul as a good Christian instead of judging people. After all, that's what our bible says. P.S. I'm not a snowflake I am a hard core conservative, trump supporter. I also loved Robin Williams. They re not mutually exclusive positions..
Yeah, Robin Williams valued the friendship of other comedians, including older ones such as Jonathan Winters and Billy Connolly. There was also Robin's great compassion, such as how he visited his friend Christopher Reeve so often after his accident.
My absolute best part time job was working back stage security at Kansas City's Starlight Theater in the 80's. That night's show was Robin Williams. He was a hoot back stage and then 2 hours, non stop on stage. RIP Robin you are missed every day.
Carson was absolutely correct in his closer. Just stay out of the way and let them go at it. So many jokes in such a short span of time. Comedic giants in action.
That is what I always admired about Carson, he knew when to say something but he also knew when to let the guest to roll on. Not like Letterman, Leno etc who constantly interrupted their guests.
Winters' old voice absolutely killed me. How can you even do such an accurate impression when rehearsed, let alone off the cuff?! My goodness. Incredible
This is a testament to the magnitude of his gift. Even he knew how special he was. the thought of that gift being taken away or loss to age and illness must have been devastating to him. I haven’t laughed this hard since he was here. RIP Robin Williams!
Yeah, what a moron! It wasn't being taken away, he never had it to begin with! That's why he hung himself. He suddenly realized his entire life was the real joke.
Jonathan Winters and Robin Williams were absolutely brilliant comedians and actors!! Both of them suffered mental health issues for their art. This is so precious seeing them go all the way slaying the audience and an admiring Johnny Carson!! Such a treasure on video!!
Robin was the saddest celebrity death ever. Should be remembered as not only a brilliant comedian and actor, but one of the most intelligent minds as well. He could have done anything with that lightning fast brain of his, but he used it to fill our lives with joy. Unlike so many celebrities today, there was never any doubt that he was a wonderful person both on and off the set. So much respect and admiration for him.
When Johnny Carson left the studio that evening in 1991 he knew that those moments with Williams and Winters were extraordinary. Truly one of the greatest moments in improv/interview comedy in the history of TV.
@@847JS they were mostly liberal back then too. The difference is current events didn’t dominate every show. They made a couple of Supreme Court jokes at the beginning and moved on to other stuff. Today every talk show is 90% politics 10% comedy when it should be the other way around.

I wholeheartedly agree! Both so different in their comedic styles but they compliment each other so well. I miss them both.
I totally agree.

Disagree. Johnny Carson was an ok host but a jerk real life. As an interviewer, Dick Cavett is still king.

sorry there mslocker, the worst thing in life is to get sold a bill of goods and think robin willaims is funny, and then to be stuck having to listen to his ancient crap and think it’s funny at all.
And Jonny Carson was the absolute best for finding talent, interviewing superbly and even laughing at himself; a modest, humble genius the likes of which you'd be lucky to witness in your lifetime! I feel blessed for the opportunity to have him be the last person I heard before 😴
One is never stuck listening to anyone. If you weren't so busy complaining and playing victim, you would know you can always change your channel.

29 years later. OMG I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. Truly timeless. I miss all of these guys. Sheer brilliance. It may be time for a Robin Willimas marathon again. I've been having a very hard time thinking about Robin and what he went through. It's time to celebrate what sheer madness genius can do.
Watch "What Dreams may Come". It stars Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding Jr. I love that movie. Another movie from Robin that I enjoy is Awakenings with Robert Deniro. This is another movie that shows Williams' dramatic acting skills.
Awakenings is my all time favorite movies. De Niro, Williams and the sound track by Randy Newman.....sheer genius!!!
This sounds like an excellent idea! Include Aladdin, his Jeannie is the bomb. The animators waited until he was done to do that portion because he was going so fast...🤣🤣🤣

Absolutely! So cool!
Williams was someone who you could always tell when he Really apreciated someone else...his Comedy began thru his Mother, he wanted to make HER laugh...& so the antics began!!
That is so awesome you watched it live. Thanks for sharing pal.
I recall watching it too. I tried to watch it every time Robin Williams was on. I mostly stood there like a guppy. My brain doesn’t work that fast. ❤️
I remember watching it too. It’s hard to forget the chemistry.
It was one of the few times that Carson totally lost control of the situation. Once Robin and Johnathan got rolling there was no stopping them.

Robin and Jonathan were both generational talents. Watching either of them perform was amazing but having them both together was nothing short of magical. They gave us the blessing of true laughter.
Priceless
You are so right
This is one of my favorite Robin Williams interviews. He’s here with his mentor and model. J. Winters isn’t quite as lightning-fast as Robin, and certainly less manic, but he has the same off-the-cuff ability to connect ideas for maximum effect, all without canned jokes. This had to be a real pleasure for both comedians.
Winters was brilliant though
Jonathon, Winter's Here.

Still hard in 2021 to believe that someone that sad could hide it so well. RIP 🙏 Mr. Robin Williams
I don’t think it was exactly sadness, but more a brain disease that he had undiagnosed.
Yeah, nobody in history has ever hidden how they feel on the inside. Especially someone who acts for a living. That's impossible. Moron.
Johnny was wiping away tears the entire time. What a legend.
You can tell how much Robin loves and respects Jonathan Winters. The looks and how he stays quiet and lets Jonathan have his moment. He idolizes him, that's clear as day.

THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER "ROBIN WILLIAMS!"
I was born the same year as Robin but, I joined the military and served 4 bloody years in the Vietnam war, saw people being killed, blown up, infact, I was ordered to kill anything that walked, crawled or moved in any kind of way.
I had to kill men, women and children because I was ordered to do that!!!!!!
There was no "hero's welcome back" infact, people hated me, kicked, beat, called me a murderer.
"Robin's humor allowed me to let the pain go but now it's back and I don't know how to deal with the pain anymore..........."
I WISHED I COULD TRADE PLACES WITH ROBIN WILLIAMS AND NOT BE HERE ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!

@Philip Parker You must really live a miserable life.
You ain’t kidding!! When comedy was funny!
This was the comedic clash of the titans. A truly great moment in comedy history. Rest in peace gentlemen.🙏🏻
The calming effect of Winters on Williams was always amazing to watch.
Winters was his idol. Shows so much respect for him.

Who would have known that moments like this with Johnny, Robin and Jonathan would be such a precious time in TV history.....I miss those moments.
Robin Williams, was and is, one of the best actors ever that, worked in the industry, of the film and, television, history. He was not only a great actor, but a wonderful human being, he often hired, homeless people straight off the streets, to fill in parts of his movie's. He was a very special loving and caring man. Everyone that knew him, loved him. And every single film that he that he made, he put everything he had heart and soul, into his movie's. Robin Williams, will always be a part,of American people's favorite people, who will stay in their hearts and souls, forever! Robin Williams, can never be replaced! Every movie he ever made, Everyone will always remember! And, Robin Williams will never be forgotten!
So do I...I loved each and every one of them and really miss them....Especially Johnny I watched him all the time
And ALL of those gentlemen onstage have left this earthly plane..."and the wheels of life keep turning so much faster..." 🥲

This is the Tonight Show at its best. This is a very rare segment. Bless Jonathan winters.
Look how wild the crowd goes for Mr. Williams. Rest in heaven, cracking jokes and bringing smiles to everyone the same way you did here.
Geniuses of improv comedy, absolute masters! Oh how I truly miss them both, RIP Jonathan Winters & Robin Williams, such beautiful people that had God-given gifts to make people laugh 💗💎
"We're gonna go through Chickamauga twice this time". Brilliant. I cried.
Johnathan Winters was a brilliant comedian. Robin is in awe of him. Johnny conducts the exchange like a maestro.
Wow all I can say is we were so lucky to have seen this extraordinary talent there is no other person who has been this good since he's been gone . All of these cats God Bless all of them .
I loved Johnny Carson, a comedic genius, but this was the funniest episode I've ever seen. Williams and Winters were hilarious. I laughed till I cried. My God I miss them.
Me too.
The looks of admiration Robin gives Jonathan :)
Lots of admiration & respect. He was obviously fan. 👍👏🤗

I just ‘discovered’ this clip! Wow. So cool. I was an NBC Page, and had the pleasure of working many a Tonight Show back in 1989. I distinctly remember this night, but I was a couple stages over on the lot, then working on a soap opera, and watching for the last guest on the monitor feed in my office (an acquaintance of my girlfriend at the time). Anyway, thanks for the blast from the past. This show is not only a truly epic example of Mr. Carson’s talent as a gracious host who knew how to make everyone comfortable on set, but Robin and Jonathan’s wildly impressive comedic talents. They are deeply missed. Memories for a lifetime. Lucky to have been part of it in such a small way, all those years ago.
Miss them all! No comedians like them today! How they could just shoot from the hip and make us all laugh 😂
