Truth in " advertising "?
They could have started this at the 7 minute mark and it still would have been a video ONLY with Bob Hope.
Thank you
I loved how Hope always called the Academy Awards, in his house, PASSOVER.
I watched that as new, I was age 14.The Oscars of 1967 were the first I ever watched on tv, but quit watching after around 1986.My whole family would watch them during those good years, and we'd guess at who'd win and who we hoped would. It was fun.Bob Hope's comedy is still awesome.
He brought me and all of us humor, wit and laughter...RIP Dear Mr.Hope he's missed
Fun to look back at the history of the Oscars! The year before this was televised I was touring with Bob Hope and my sister as part of The Dean Martin Golddiggers! Do you like vintage? The book, Beyond Our Wildest Dreams" tells the backstage stories of performing with the celebrities of the 70's. ;-)
+Maria Lauren - Riccio I want to get that book!
+Kevin Chouinard Thanks! Our book is on Amazon!
Maria Lauren - Riccio I remember The Golddiggers! That's awesome! Thanks for sharing 💃💃💃💃
Thankyou Maria--I just bought your book!
Thank you. My sister and I, along with our friends, have a "Golddigger" sisterhood. Welcome to our journey. Enjoy!
1:35, Johnny Green conducts the Academy Awards orchestra for the 17th and final time before his death 14 years later, and 32 years after that, Bill Conti would break Green's record with 18 and currently holds the record for the most stints as Academy Awards musical director at 19!
Bob Hope hosted the Oscars 19 times!
I watched both the Oscars and the Emmys every year, from 1969 to 1989. My brothers and I kept hoping our faves would win, and would cheer when they won. Movies were great back then, as were TV shows. These award shows are ideal to watch during this virus.
I hope it is not a burning sensation 😅.
Born in England loved him, amazing career.
The Academy Awards or as it's known to Bob Hope, PASSOVER!!
That joke is so corny, but I always laughed!
Best Oscar MC's
1) Bob Hope
2) Johnny Carson
2A) Billy Crystal (Especially the musical numbers)
Back when awards shows still had class.
you aint lying
Bob Hope didn't need to be "Chairman of the Board". He was already Bob Hope. It was enough. And he knew it.
Fantastic Hope. And how wonderful when he was with Bing in that marvelous duo: Crosby & Hope.
Pelayo Erazo MAN YOU MUST BE OLD.
I miss these OSCARS no politics, no bias, just fun.
I wish I could find a clip of the year Chuck Heston was master of ceremonies, and was running late because of a flat tire. Clint Eastwood had to fill in, and it was hilarious! The look of relief by Eastwood when Heston arrived, was a million dollar moment in the history of "Live" television!
Wasn't Eastwood very stoned?
I believe that was the 1973 academy awards.
There were a lot of great movies then and great entertainment that can't be beat!
The Academy Awards were better back then.
Films better as well
@@quinnhansen4457 They clearly don't watch modern movies. If they did, they'd know that great movies are still being made.
They stopped making good films.
Angelica, Jack, and Fred. 👍
I had about 7 laugh-out-loud moments. Those were the days. Thank you, Bob.
Bob Hope was not only the best stand up comedian ever, he had the guts to be controversial. Even if you don't understand his joke, you often hear the oohs and the aaahs from the sensitive and powerful in the audience
+Kevin Chouinard You're right,!
Kevin C Could not agree more I had the pleasure of seeing home live in my home town of Melbourne back in July 1983. He just turned 80 a few months earlier, but could've easily passed for a much younger man. One and a half hours of hilarious one liners one after the other. Never flubbed a line or skipped a beat. A true legend, that's for sure.
Seeing Him. Stupid Google correct again kicking in uninvited.
He was boring and scripted to the hilt, nothing he says is particularly shocking or even clever, what a dull old man
Kevin C...Bob Hope "had the guts to be controversial?" You've got to be kidding. Every word that came out of his mouth was written by third-rate lackeys and cleared by network suits. Not only was Hope allergic to controversial humor, he just plain wasn't funny. Never could understand why he was "famous."
Those were the best in Hollywood , never again all there is now is crap. The best years in film. Ron
0:53 - I think the little girl with glasses is Laura Dern.
Now this is entertaining. Love it!
There you are, that's the wrap on yesterday's news, so let's start making tomorrow's headlines.
9:50 Bob Hope. Finally.
Awww Laura Dern! 0:56
Even as an 8-year old, she was fugly.
Wow, times have sure changed. This was a couple of years before I was born and this is my first time seeing an opening monologue of the Oscars before the 80s.
I can appreciate how this was funny for many people back in the days, and even today the hosts of Academy Awards make risky jokes that don’t make everyone laugh and will probably be frowned upon even more decades from now, but that comment about Marlon Brando and the “Indians” holding him hostage, to hear it in the year of “the Killers of the Flower Moon” being nominated and seeing Lily Gladstone just win SAG yesterday, my mind is blown a little.
The audience is also so white, which is also expected but seeing it just makes you realize how much has changed for the better for the industry, in the nearly 50 year since this time, even if it’s still got a looong way to go.
Brilliant.
No wonder some amazing actors never won Awards bc the competition was so FIERCE!!
Whoa, so many stars back then
1:17 look how young angelica Huston looks
Cool that "Jack" is seated next to Fred Astaire too!
And Anjelica Huston would win an Academy Award, just as her late actor/director father did, and would go on to star in The Addams Family and on Smash.
The 70’s-great movie years indeed!!!
1 minute.20 seconds in. Michael Medwin and Lauren Bacall. Rest In Peace both. Ms Bacall in 2014. Michael Medwin less than a month ago aged 96.
Wow i was 18 back then i remember all those movies. It was a capsule for me
Who's clapping ...C'mon everybody, clap ...it's Bob Hope
"This program, some video and audio portions of which were pre-recorded, is brought to you in living color on NBC."
That was the very last time those words were spoken; after those Oscars, the telecasts would move back to ABC, where it has remained ever since.
Unless ABC and the AMPAS decide not to go on with agreement in the future; if they do so, then the Oscars will find a new home in either NBC, CBS, The CW or FOX.
+Dana Long Every network should have a major awards show to balance themselves out: CBS has the Grammys and Tonys (since 1973 and 1978 respectively); NBC had the Golden Globes until recently (also now on CBS as of 2024); ABC, the Oscars; and Fox, the Primetime Emmys (every four years since 1995). ABC had the Oscars from 1961-70 before it returned there for good in 1976, and just like the Masters tournament and CBS, they've been synonymous with each other.
FOX also has the Daytona 500 every year, NBC has the Indianapolis 500 every year (taking over from ABC, which televised the event from 1965-2018), FOX has the US Open Golf every year (taking over from NBC, which televised the event from 1995-2014), ABC the NBA Finals, NBC the Stanley Cup Finals, WWE has WrestleMania, FOX the World Series, ESPN the College World Series, CBS the Academy of Country Music Awards, ABC the Country Music Association awards, TBS/TNT the Screen Actors Guild awards, TNT the Western Conference Finals, NBC the Summer/Winter Olympics every 2 to 4 years and CBS, FOX and NBC air the Super Bowl every 3 years!
Footage of Raquel Welch during both the arrivals and Bob Hope's monologue were quickly followed by shots of Lauren Bacall. It's intriguing to ponder on today because seven years later, Welch and Bacall would be a embroiled in a feud (mostly fueled by Bacall). Bacall was very upset when the producers of her hit Broadway musical Woman of the Year chose Welch to take over the lead role.
Why? Raquel was great in the role!
As mentioned in other comments... very dated but funny if you remember the references. I like the fluidity of his delivery. Makes me think of Billy Chrystal... loved his hosting of the awards!
🌹🌹🌹❤️ the best 💕R.I.P.
That set is a bit dated today, but still spectacular.
Mark Johnson But, as I said, I like it.
That set was designed by John F. DeCuir, Sr., an Academy Award winner in his own right.
Always like Bob Hope. It was better Oscars back then. I haven't watched in decades.
Now its Boring. Over paid people patting themselves on the back
If you haven't watched the Oscars in decades, how do you know if they are better or worst today?
Yeah, because in the 60's and 70's actors were underpaid and shunned self promotion and attending the Oscars... yeah...
Because the next day all the lowlights are all over the net.
Remember when when the Oscars were about achievements as opposed to socialist's bullsh-it?
yeah.....and today's actors have no class like duke Wayne and Fred Astaire
Raquel Welch is stunning in that purple dress.
nymet2454 Still stunning now 42 years later.
Yes, back then it was fun to watch. Now...
Jack is pinching himself ...gets to sit next to Freddy 🕺💃
1:24, Beau and Jeff Bridges, sons of late actor Lloyd Bridges, and who would've guessed that 7 years later, Jeff would go on to greater fame as Kevin Flynn in the 1982 Disney movie Tron?!
Dana Long considering that he was already a previous nominee at this point, why would there be a guess in the first place?
tron was a terrible movie. It made no sense. I am a graduate of MIT and it was a poor career choice for him. Jeff bridges has done some amazing work. one of the best actors. didn't realize he had a claim to fame at a young age after watching this. One of Jeff Bridges best pieces of work I think was in K-Pax
Damn this shit is classic
***** nobody asking you
1:21 Lauren Bacall had to be one of the most elegant women to ever grace the planet.
15:47 begins a helluva scene change!
The first Oscars show I ever watched; I was 9.
Bob Hope , Johnny Carson, Billy Crystal …..we’ve been looking for a worthy successor for years now. Have we finally found Jimmy Kimmel ?
Hurray for Hollywood! The introduction and the great set used for this Oscars presentation!! All in the name of make believe world! A fan and an admirer from Pakistan!
Couldn't they find film clips in better shape? There are lots of color videos of Bob hosting the Oscars on TH-cam. The ones showed here are scratched black and white kinescope films.
Because bonehead he hosted back in the days before color.
1928. "Stock market at an all time high and rising." Hmmm, sounds familiar.
a year later it fell
That was a great monologue tbh. The marlon brando one was very clever. It hurt and it was hilarious. Also loved how everyone was a tad bit offended. Hhaahah that's fun to watch never gets old.
I don't think they were offended. They just didn't think it was funny.
0:56 is that Laura dern ?!?!
love the 144p quality
What surprised me was why they used the black-and-white kinescopes of the colour broadcasts when they could have easily used the colour videotape recordings. (Expensive costs, I guess.)
0:00 NBC Peacock
hope was caustic but great, always...
Bob Hope was right. Al Pacino should have WON Best Actor!!
Can't believe that Bob Hope has been dead for sixteen years now. It feels like yesterday they were talking the comedian Bob Hope had passed so sudden on ET news.
Dig Jack in his beret. Coolest person ever to live.
Yeah things have changed a lot since then.
FORTUNATELY!!!!
10:40 AYEE day boi Jack Nicholas he a cutieee
I've been a survivor my whole life ...if we look at things honestly ✌️🎪
😂 Godd ole Bob even looks like Oscar 💛
Let's be honest here... Nothing has changed !!!
10:06 Quagmire has entered the chat...
I didn't catch on the Dustin Hoffman joke (concerning the thunder) ??
Rainman
@@talkshh no that film came out 13 years after this stand up
Same. I was curious about that one. He was nominated for Lenny that year, which got six nods, which may have been the most that year. But some piece of timely humor, perhaps, that doesn't hold up now.
This was an interesting look back at the initial segment of the Academy Awards presentation. Bob Hope's comedy is topical, meaning that the viewer would have to know what Hope was talking to find any humor in it.
It also means the humor is anachronistic; meaning the viewer today has to be about 90 years old to get the joke.
No, 65 will do.
Well it’s less topical than all of the political “humor” today. And u don’t have to be 90 or 65 to get the humor. You simply have to be educated.
4 or 5 of those were great.
Back when the Oscars still had good Hosts. Haven't watched them since Johnny Carson last Hosted them.
Nowadays, the Oscars have Anne Hathaway, Billy Crystal, Jon Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel and Alec Baldwin, among others.
Dana Long what are you trying to say exactly? You just listed off a bunch of hacks. I like Jon Stewart but other than the Daily Show he’s done absolutely nothing of note. I’m not sure if you’re agreeing or disagreeing with OP. You haven’t actually said anything.
"Lets hear it for the Village People, ladies and gentlemen. Aren't they fabulous? They were the first rock group to stay at the Waldorf-Astoria and request bunkbeds."
Is there a category with iron cross and oak leaves
These were better days than today.
There are no more good days ahead of us.
Diane Ladd at 0:56, so is that Laura Dern holding her hand?
ALane Yes
How many years did Bob Hope host the Oscars?
my guess five years
I'd say more about 15 years than 5.
Looked like half the crowd was angry .
10:36 who's that, he looks familiar, but also at the same time Bryan Cranston looks like a younger version of him
Jack Lemmon.
John Jingleheimer-Schmidt thanks, well, I guess it was only in this video that he sort of resembled Cranston
Bob actually doesn’t start speaking until 10:00 minutes in. So if you came to watch just that skip there.
don't go there. ...Bob hope is incredible
I agree! Another great homage video for the great Bob Hope! th-cam.com/video/ce5-c6zVUgQ/w-d-xo.html
yes dana long thankyou like cary grant or Stewart granger
Mr. Hope great as always. Such style and confidence, masterful delivery. Probably saw this originally in 1975 as I still was watching every year back in that era, still familiar with most of the films that came out. Although I found most of the jokes pretty funny, a few dimming with time or my no longer recalling details and gossip surrounding the stars and films mentioned, I sensed that the audience wasn't as receptive or perceptive as they ought to have been. Did anyone else get that impression? Much of the laughter was rather muted or somewhat delayed in response. There were a tiny number of jokes that, perhaps, weren't overly strong but since Hope's monologue was geared to an industry audience, it seems they should've "gotten" all of them. Was the room just too large, too many people to be in sync on each joke? Were the majority pre-occupied and nervous, especially the nominees, unable to fully concentrate on the jokes? Perhaps. I don't know. Hope said nothing political, the divisive Vietnam War was over by then, so these factors shouldn't've been in play, as they were in some of his Oscar monologues of the past and which affected audience response. Do strictly movie & Hollywood-related jokes limit the scope for humor, i.e., too many jokes on a very narrow subject, a few being fine but becoming too in-house or generally a little simplistic, obvious, or quasi-repetitive? In other words, Hope's monologues tended to be sharper and funnier when commenting on society as a whole, cultural trends, politics and politicians, other people or events in the news, etc., always current & topical. This Oscar monologue was topical, of course, but perhaps, as I mentioned, too limiting and inside. I realize that he was there to kid and lampoon all the nominees as well as Hollywood in general, so that's fine. Still doesn't explain the audience's fairly slack response, with some exceptions. Some of them are seen sitting there stone-faced. Again, I don't know. As mentioned, perhaps nervousness. Mr. Hope, though, was excellent. His confident and charge-ahead delivery, regardless of response, is the hallmark of a true pro. This was alot of fun to see!
who is the lady at 9:00?
Don't know...
Merle Oberon
What's the Brando/Balloon Payment joke about?
Fat joke.
Remember when "The Academy" was all about the industry honoring it's own with accolades for exceptional performances?? (And not a bunch of stupid, pretty, young fools who'd created Nothing, and done nothing, other than repeat something that someone else wrote for them.. lecturing me about politics??) Those were the days, huh??
I knew Bob Hope from Michael Scott
and that ladies and gentlemen..is what a good roasting sounds like. unlike today.
Was this the year that every iconic movie ever was made?
Yes ! IMO 1939 and 1974 were the two best years in film history
Very obvious where Billy Crystal took his inspiration from
Is that Cindy Williams on the left at 13:57? And who's the babe with no sense of humor in the brown sleeveless gown two seats over?
Sure looks like Cindy. She used to be so cute when she starred in "Laverne and Shirley".
Who is at 15:21? Look at that mop of hair!
I did some research: DIANA ROSS 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
4:02, "The Greatest Show on 🌏," the first 🎥 to win an Oscar for Best Picture in the 📺 era, and the theme song of WGN's "Bozo's Circus!"
Also considered one of the worst Oscar winners. Recent consensus would give it to Singing in the Rain which wasn't even nominated. Of those that were, High Noon would likely be the pick.
Bob hope best at host. Classy. Awards today terrible. Political.
Back when it was actually enjoyable to watch before everyone had to blather their politics.
Actually this show was very controversial because of just that. The winner of Best Documentary in his acceptance speech railed against Viet Nam. Bob Hope refused to go back out as MC unless the academy made a statement on the air saying that they weren't responsible for the content of the acceptance speeches, which Frank Sinatra came out & said. After which Shirley MacClaine berated Sinatra for backstage. Then Frank refused to come back on stage at the end but Sammy Davis talked him into it so he did.
@@lynnturman8157 wait how do you know all that, it’s so interesting
I believe that was all documented in that wonderful book “Inside Oscar”
The Oscars have been political for a long time. Do your homework before blathering..
Hopes wife should have got a oscar for putting up wuth him.
@10:37 Liz Taylor and Bryan Cransto.. Wat
Back in my day we worked our fingers to the bone, we got boney fingers,
Thank you to share this beautiful videotape, I have included it in the Album of the movie Stars, please scribe in the searching "Álbum de las Estrellas de Cine" or "Tribute Actress Famous" and go to the letter B of the alphabet that has the Album and choose the option BO, there all detailed one is, thank you, I cannot answer, but if I read all the comments that I receive from all the countries of the World.
