This is a never seen unedited segment from 12-8-1974 with John Wayne as the surprise masked guest. This uncut-version has more dialogue and longer takes between Wayne and Rickles then the previous version, that was uploaded. This was filmed in December of 1974, and aired in 1975.
DON RICKLES (1926 - 2017) was an American stand-up comedian, actor, and author, known especially for his insult comedy. His film roles included Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) with Clark Gable and Kelly's Heroes (1970) with Clint Eastwood, and beginning in 1976 he enjoyed a two-year run starring in the NBC television sitcom C.P.O. Sharkey. A headline performer at Las Vegas hotel-casinos and peripheral member of the Rat Pack via friendship with Frank Sinatra, Rickles received widespread exposure as a frequent guest on talk and variety shows, including The Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Show with David Letterman.
JOHN WAYNE (1907 - 1979) known professionally as John Wayne and nicknamed Duke, was an American actor and filmmaker who became a popular icon through his starring roles in Western films. His career spanned from the silent era of the 1920s, through the Golden Age of Hollywood and eventually American New Wave, appearing in a total of 179 film and television productions. He was among the top box office draws for three decades,[3][4] and appeared with many other important Hollywood stars of his era. (Wikipedia)

@@kookiethebear are you an ex wife? lol
@@kookiethebear ok, I get it, but he obviously packed nightclubs and had respect of many in the business. What I don’t get is John Wayne? Yes, he is big and has a presence, but except for TrueGrit (which even had few moments) I don’t see his acting prowess; not even close to Brando, DiNero, or even Eastwood. Look at his early films, he just reads lines.
@@wayneriley7367 John Wayne is as important as baseball , hotdogs and Chevrolet to coin a phrase. You are correct he was no Brando or Gable but what he was to the vast majority of movie gowers was a larger than life representation of an American - didn't cheat , lie , steal .....etc . A true American hero of his day especially in the eyes of kids . Those others were better actors but he was the bigger star. And Don Rickles kicks comedy ass , the king of the one liner.

I met John months before he died. I was a nurse and he was leaving the pharmacy in my building. He was big, tall, stood up straight and tall and so polite. My mother worked at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs at the drycleaners service counter there.
Many celebrities stayed there when they were in town.
One day, my mom brings me to work and has me sit in the lobby,I had no clue why.
Next thing I know, she comes walking around a corner with,John Wayne, beside her.
I had at 10 years old never seen a man that big in my life at that point.
I had seen his movies and was a total fan,I couldn't believe who I was actually seeing.
He comes up and stands in front of me and extends his hand, and we shake.
I had never seen a mans hand that big,at 10,He was so much bigger in real life than anyone I had seen.
He says, "How are you doing, young man,I hear you like Westerners,is that so?"
I just stared at him wide-eyed and smiling and said,"You're John Wayne, you're the Duke,Mom,is he really John Wayne,Mom,it's the Duke!"
He sat down and we talked,he asked me what movie of his I liked the most,I said "All of them sir, every one of them, sir".
He laughed and got up and he shook my hand again and said"You're a good kid,I have to go,you have a nice day,and it was nice to meet you, young man".
I said "Thank you sir,I'm having the best day of my life, you take care too sir!"
And that was the best day of my life at 10,let me tell you,I shook the hand of the Duke, and he liked me!

What, exactly, is it about Wayne that makes him so great? He was an actor. Whatever was seen on screen was make believe. That was not the real person. It's like what John Ford told the Duke. Stop acting because you suck at it, just be yourself.
