D'Otter: That's totally true! In the first run of episodes we want to explore anthro art/furry one medium at a time, so fan-fic wouldn't have worked so well in an episode on RPG's. If anything we should have included it in the episode on the internet. This is definitely something to think about for a future episode though ;)
Considering I got into the fandom through video games, and then back again through cosplaying, I love how various games influence characters, and how people see themselves.
I've been playing a unicorn mare since 1987, when I was introduced to a pile of dice, three pale books and a fantastic DM who only cared that his players had the most fun possible.
Oh boy. My characters. Well... There's Ashie the Kitsune Kinetsist. She's only 16 and is freaking overpowered. Led to her being arrogant as can be by the time that Adventure Path ended. Erkos is my most human looking character. He's a Tiefling Pirate, his arms, face and torso are human in shape, though his skin is not a human-like colour. And he's got antlers, and hooves, a long tail and massive wings. His fiendish heritage is extremely close to the surface. He's on Oracle/Evanglist, and is the most terrifying thing that most people ever meet. Then there's Xanthe. Ze's also a tiefling, but as a Raksasha spawn is a lot more anima-like. I call zir a Reptavian, since ze has serpentine, aviain and reptile traits to her. Ze's an Arshean Paladin, with the Virtious Bravo archetype and is a dodgly little thing. Then there's Quetza, for a playtest I'm in. She's a serpentfolk, but uses illusion magic to disguise herself when dealing with warmbloods. She's kinda racist. (against humans) Oh and for a game that only gets played sometimes there's Kara and Loki, a Ganzi and her Eidolon. She's pretty human looking at first, until you see the fact that her hair is naturally rainbow, her ears rather pointed, and she has constantly swirling glowing, changing markings all over her skin. And she's got dragonfly wings. Loki's her Eidolon, and is a big eff off snake with the ability to make things hurt quite badly. So those are my recent or current Player Characters. I've got several waiting in the wings to be played too. There's Obie Brock, a plump and nearly always stoned Bard/Paladin of Ghenshau. Cida a curvy drow bard with the Archivest archetype. I built her as a hyperactive curvy, nerdy glasses wearing woman to go against all the drow stereotypes. (evil and loving it, evil and agnsty or good and angsty) Then I've got a few more concepts bouncing about the back of my head.
The D&D character I created back in 2005 started out as a human cleric of Anubis. Through his adventures, he began dabbling in sorcery, just enough to unlock the Geomancer class. On one part of the adventure, the party came across a pool that the villans were using to turn slaves into half-fiends and half-dragons, while killing those who transformed into half-celestial. My character managed to get some of that water and drink it, turning half celestial. Then, the more geomancer levels I took, the more shifts took hold, turning him ultimately into a black furry anthro wolf with a venomous bite, earthsense and the traits of a half-celestial who people began to confuse him FOR Anubis.
i remember when i got into secondlife i spent... way too much money on making my fursona in it. i havent logged in since halloween of last year. why am i like this. my first ever venture into furry stuff was when i was 13 on imvu i think? i saw that furry avatars were really popular and i thought they were cool so i made a second account and spent way too long using the free sign up currency to make a pseudo fursona
You know, your videos are pretty damn informative. And fairly entertaining. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if your series gets more views. But enough of my praise, I find the history of the Fursona more engaging as look deeper into it, it speaks out to A lot of the people roaming about the internet on forums these days(just like in the past during the 90 or earlier.) And I do have to Agree with D'Otter's statement on the Mary sue/Gary stu dilemma, but its not all that hard to see people build more of their own World or stories based off the theme they set. Usually off of the Character or around it. Just look at D&D, there's a Heavy focus of the Group dynamic that feeds into the Character(s) existence that has flooded to to the MUDs or MMOs that gives the character9s) made personal weight and value! But the one thing MMOs don't do well….is making that Character Character real. (Except for Second Life or D&D) Which is really interesting, Backstory, involvement, personal Flaws and quirks are always unique to see in the storytelling aspects.
Furries are also breaking into youtube as dance videos, you may want to explore those, I myself have put a few out, not to make money but just and excuse to have some fun with friends. Feel free to look at what we have done.
It seems reasonable that RPG character generation could have influenced the development of the fursonna as a phenomenon. Certainly tabletop RPGs and MMORPGs, both Furry-themed and otherwise, have always been popular in the fandom. However, I know of no direct evidence of a connection between character generation and the origin of fursonnas. I'd like to suggest an alternative explanation; the fannish phenomenon of the "Mary Sue." A "Mary Sue" is a character created by fans, usually fans of a TV show or movie, through which they inject themselves into the show by way of fan fiction. If I'm not mistaken, the name originated in Star Trek fandom; Ensign Mary Sue served aboard Cpt. Kirk's Enterprise. She would often save the day through her brilliance and quick wit, charming everybody including James T, Spock and often the entire bridge crew -- Did you know Uhura was bi? -- as she climbed the ladder to a command of her own. Mary Sue fanfic was generally among the worst, BTW. In the case of Furry fandom, we had no single TV show or movie to insert our Mary Sue characters into, but rather the entire genre of Furry fiction, both accidental and deliberate. When your animal self could need to be inserted into anything from Disney's Robin Hood or The Lion King to Usagi Yojimbo, Golddigger and Black Sad, what do you choose? As the golden age of underground comics came to a close, we increasingly had to create our own universes, our own stories for our fursonnas... which meant, of course, that they were no longer Mary Sues characters. But not everyone is good at writing stories. For some Furry fans, the idea of their fursonnas having a back story went by the way side and are merely themselves in animal form. However, many still do want a back story and universe for their fursonnas. It would not surprise me if RPG character generation influences this aspect of the fursonna, (although again, I know of no proof.) In fact, I'll predict here that, when Disney's Zootopia is released next year, many fursonnas will find their way into it, as Mary Sues.
I first made a "fursona" when I was on a site called Elf Town. I just called it an avatar since I hadn't even herd of a furry back then. Anyway everyone was drawing up critters to showcase themselves on this site and to RP with. I still use my character these days (she's even depicted as my YT profile pic).
oddly enough, the gamer thing, like the media thing, has never been a major influence for me. i guess its coming from written science fiction, that i find too little support for my kind of world, which isn't mundane earth either, in either of them.
