Just a little fun fact about the kitsune. When you answer the phone in Japan, you say "moshi moshi" instead of "hello". According to myth, a kitsune can't pronounce the phrase, so if you hear it on the other end of the line, you know you're talking to a human and not a kitsune
Well, using uncle Kage / Samuel Conway as a reference, he said, once at anthrocon (furry convention) he asked the fox sonas in his audience to lift their hand if they're straight. Within the hall, an estimated 1% of the fox sonas did lift their hand. So... well. The rest was either bi or gay, which didnt get specified if I remember correctly.
Fun fact : the french "renard" was originally spelled "renart" in "le roman de renart" For some reason we changed the t to a d, probably because the french word for "vixen" is "renarde" so with a d ("renarte" sounds bad) My language is weird.
There is an amazing Hungarian film from 2015 called Liza the fox fairy that takes a lot from the Kitsune myth and combines it with eastern european magic realism, she might be my favorite pop culture fox
I'm three years too late 😅 but there's a newer show called Love, Death, & Robots and one of the episodes is about a vixen who couldn't transform back into a fox because the world had become too mechanical. She is my favorite, and if you've seen that episode, you probably know why
My favorite foxes that influenced me the most actually come from three sources: The first source is "The animals of Farthing Wood" the TV Series and Books where the fox and later his family play a big role: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Animals_of_Farthing_Wood_(TV_series) The second source is FoxMcCloud from the Starfox games (which still is my furry nickname even though it got another meaning by now). The third source is Camio in the Novel Hunter's Moon or The foxes of Firstdark (US Title), which is a great novel: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter%27s_Moon_(novel) This shaped me a s a person and as a "fox furry". And I really contradict so many stereotypes this way. The fox in "farthing Wood" leads the group. He is very social and fights for the survival of all the animals there. FoxMcCloud is a nonconformist (as a mercenary) who still does good despite of not being officially part of an army or something like that. And Camio is a good-natured, loving and caring fox who is a non-traditionalist but his deeds are good and such he gains the love of O-Ha, the more traditionalist vixen in the "Hunter's Moon" Novel. So the foxes I knew where kind, caring, loving, although nonconfortmist and individualistic and non-traditional. They were intelligent, but also hunted and vulnernable. They were falsely accused of being evil just because they were being themselves. This all made them fit to my personality. I was bullied at school so I thought about bullies as the hunters who hunt me for personal fun, I always was caring and kind and I never gave that up, I was different than the others so I could identify with non-traditionalists and nonconformtists and I wanted to fight for something good and have a loving family. And I became a vegetarian, which in one way connected me to the fox of Farthing Wood as all the animals there had an oath to not eat each other. I am not really very submissive, although I live in a male-male-marriage, I tend to be the more dominant partner. I am the "strong one" who "gets things done" and who "leads". When problems arise, i am the one to say "Okay, here is what we should do..." I can "play" submissive sometimes, but only as a game. I am not really sly and mischieveous, not really a trickster or something. But I am a survivor, which foxes are. Hope you liked my comment :)
I liked it. : ) I can relate to a fair bit of it, though my inspiration for wanting to be a hero despite being an outcast was Robin Hood (initially). It was rather later that I encountered other foxy heroes because of my interest in them -- like Fox of Farthing Wood and Camio. So thrilled to see someone else aware of Foxes of First Dark/Hunter's Moon.
The Island Fox lives on the Channel Islands and was re-introduced into its natural habitat in the past years. They are the largest animal on the islands (aside from seals + sea lions) and no one really lives on the islands (though they can be visited and camped on), no one is able to leave food there, or hunt, to help them repopulate. Just letting you know because you made it seem as if they are still declining, when in fact their population is rising again.
My favorite fox related media would be the classic cartoon: Vuk the little fox. I can't find it anywhere anymore, but I remember the movie vividly and enjoyed it greatly as a child.
This is the first video I watched because I was curious, and uh... I'm a bit scared now. (The alliteration and style at the beginning was a bit fremdschämen) Okay, now you're getting into some cultural detail which is actually interesting. 2:48 Ah! That was scary! Lots of foxes here in Toronto. It's kind of neat to spot one along the GO tracks or in a park. 4:50 No! N... get out! Bad joke! 5:50 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Renard... I know that's just the french word for fox, but it always reminds me of that DJ who made Intensive Care Unit. (Who also did some problematic things as far as some Internet friends say... -_-) Well... thanks for that. It was a trip.
Robin Hood's a big part of me childhood, but Nick Wilde made me adore foxes to the max, so I just can't pick a side/team. XD - Lookin' very smart with the top hat btw, mate. 🎩:3
That was quite inspirational for me, in ways I won't go into (I want to surprise people), so thanks for another gripping romp in history and folklore! I also share space on the "Fantastic Mr. Fox" plains. Ginger Crisp Apple Snaps forever.
Subscribe and we'll get to it! We have 2 other videos on popular fursona choices too, as mentioned toward the end of the video. (but neither are dragons). VSauce2 had a great video on dragons a while back you should check out!
We haven't been prioritizing them, especially since we scaled back our production schedule and it's taking longer for us to produce videos. There will be more eventually!
I must know... who and what is that character whose picture hangs on the wall behind your right shoulder? Looks like some sort of brown bat holding a pen or a microphone?
I actually know a sweet fox named Faolan wildpaw he is such a sweetheart he doesn't fit the stereotypes at all although he does enjoy a good joke or pun every once in awhile I myself being part fox, 3 tailed fennec fox kitsune to be exact, I am a tiny bit impish but that behavior follows mostly around bad puns so all in all I'd say foxes are pretty sweet and harmless
Go team McCloud! My fursona is a twintailed fox, similar to Miles "Tails" Prower, and I probably fit into the male, homosexual submissive stereotype of foxes in the furry fandom. However I don't find myself to be slutty or too extremely clever, I agree that no stereotypes from fox lore can be applied to the foxes of the fandom.
I made my fox character in highscool after giving an oral report on foxes, and realising I liked them a bit too much. Been obsessed over it for more than 10 years.
Gee!Hey my friend! This is your best video yet!As Im a fox,I first want to say I thankyou for this topic!Im crazy like a fox!It took me years to decide on a fox as my fursona.Ive loved foxes for a very long time!Im with you!Fantastic Mr Fox is my most favorite movie!I find it amazing to see so many foxes out thereEspecially fox fursuiters!I think foxes are more the wolves and hybrids.you know foxes are lazy?Im lazy. You got some things right.Im crazy, mischevous.Im kinda grumpy at times.Foxes are so cute!Very beautiful.Id have to say foxes are sexy to.Like you I have other rabbit friends.Your one of my favorites Rusty!
I think my barely sublimated crush on Robin Hood as a wee lad not only made me into the gay furry garbage I am today, but also likely influenced my taste in men in general-along with Bill Badger from Rupert, if I'm going that far back and that willing to embarrass myself-so I can't front here. I also happen to have a great affection for foxes as actual animals and mythical figures, particularly kitsune and the Reynard cycle. That said, not my fursona: I am very much more a pine marten or a fruit bat.
P.S. The Fantastic Mr. Fox, while actually not a part of my childhood as a book, is probably my favourite Wes Anderson film, and not even because of the furry aspect. It's just such a charming, witty, heartfelt little movie.
10:25-10:30 ...um, you do know that was a parody article from CBC comedy, not a real news article, right? www.cbc.ca/comedy/94-of-women-born-in-1980s-harbour-complex-sexual-feelings-toward-the-red-fox-1.4242251
You know, a film starring a trickster-like fox doesn't sound like a bad idea, if such a film were being made today, instant cult following right there. We don't get movies starring foxes nowadays. (Edit: Also, I don't really think of myself as the feminine type (I'm straight))
You'd be grumpy too if you were stereotyped like that. : p But hey! I've isolated myself from the fandom for years, to my regret, so that's why I'm so late in thanking you for the great episode. And hard to say -- Robin over Nick, definitely, but I do really like Tails... and Marian. And Krystal ahs a great design, even thoguh i've never been able to get into the Star Fox games.
Don't forget a great version made by pioneer animator Ladislas Starevich: "Le Roman de Renard": th-cam.com/video/tEYJwHtunpA/w-d-xo.html 7@=e (Fun fact: he started out using insects: see "The Cameraman's Revenge" (1911)

Nice job with all the "F" words at the start. ; ) If they're a fox, I'm for 'em, Nick, Robin, McCloud, Krystal, Todd, Tails, Renamon....whoever.
but Renamon isn't a fox she's a Renamon do you even understand how Digimon works
Josh Herbert Man, I do love toiletries.
Nice alliteration in the beginning, the Anglo-Saxons would be impressed.

I "like" how 99% of furries don't know shit about foxes, and don't even want to change that.
Read Hunter's Moon yet?

How may takes did it take you to take this feral ferocious fox in the first 0:00 to 1:10?
Three
Very insightful analysis of the fox... I'm personally on Team Robin Hood since it made me discover both my furry self and my fursona. :3
I made my fox character in highscool after giving an oral report on foxes, and realising I liked them a bit too much. Been obsessed over it for more than 10 years.
I swear the first minute made me think of Guy Fawkes from V for Vendetta
That was the idea!
Aww, Wiley Farrel doesn't get a mention?
Intro was better than any XXL freestyle
4:20 Uhm, I don't think KyotoFox is 100 years old yet, or...

You shouldnt have said that XD now i got something on my mind the entire video over
god damit, this is why we cant have nice things ;D
TOO MANY FOXES! XD Foxes are my fav, but I love goats so that's my fursona
Renamon gets her own episode?
Etymology is always so fascinating. I thought ‘shenanigans’ was just a nonsense English word.
I uh...think my favourite fox us obvious.....
One Fox i have always liked is Alopex from TMNT with her Backstory in the show.
I'm thinking about designing a dragon / wolf I think that'd be an interesting concept honestly
It’s been too long since I last watched Robin Hood for me to make an unbiased choice between him and Nick Wilde.

Freaking fantastic frolicking for foxes for four fifteen.... seconds.
