  • Over view of the process of replacing a worn out ATH-M50/M50X headband assembly (part 381303270) order from Audiotechnia ($23.65 + shipping of 13.00~ ) at the time I ordered (Feb 2019).
To perform this repair you should have basic soldering skills / soldering station and a precision screwdriver set.

I have the ATH-M50X's headphones. Had them since 2017 and now just replaced the ear pads with Wicked Cushions ear pads which are head and shoulders better in terms of comfortability from the stock ear pads. My head band leather kept flaking off to the point where I ended up scraping off the remainder of the leather with an exacto knife and I'm currently looking for a headband cover to put over the cloth like material that was under the leather headband. But I have had these since 2017 and I love them, have no regrets about purchasing them and I hope they'll last me a long time.

Hey I need some help with this replacement. I've re-soldered the cups on with the A symbol on the left side of the headband, but the channels are swapped, left and right, left channel coming out of the right side. I also tried swapping the orientation of the headband and the same thing is happening. Any idea why this might be happening?

you mixed up the two cable. resolder them reverse and it should be fine

@@soderdaen That wasn't the case, as reversing those wires didn't do anything at all. It was a factory defect that the friend I was doing the repair for didn't notice. The channels had been swapped the entire lifetime of the headphones. Thank you for the response!

I ordered from audio-technia in the United states.. as I reside in the U.S. I had to contact them as they don't have the part listed to order but emailing support i was able to get the part no. and order the part.

I used scissors to cut off my old headband and bought a new headband with a zipper.

wow nice guide, but I think that $24 is too expensive for a headband

thank you.. yeah it is a personal call on if to spend that much and then have to diy solder ..etc.. I like this pair because the removable cable mod was the first mod I ever did.. so I forked out for the replacement part. For many a $10~ headband cover from amazon might well be what they'd rather do.
Over the years I'd seen many people asking about repairing these with flaking headbands ..but not many who had actually done it .. so I posted this.. so that if anyone else felt like the cost was worth it could get an idea of what the process would look like.
