I listened to Call of Duty on them. I also listened to stereo mixes I created of audio extracted from my own bought with my own money for the coppy right people DVDs and they are glorious. Okay okay yeah maybe he's right that panning could be wider but for the way i listen where I judge things and critisize they are epic. They actually remind me of my old Bose QC 15s. They just don't have that movie theater speaker flavor the Bose did. So yes my only complanints would be the update process is a total joke. What the hell Audio-Technica? You got to hold down all the 3 media buttons and hold your finger in the finger sencer to get it to do the update. Yeah I got the BT version which some say lost some of the over harshness of the regular 50X that he's reviewing here. Let's see here yeah they do clamp too little too much. One friend even went so far as to warn me to keep my ears cleen. This he says is cause they can shuv things in your ears they clamp so mad hard. That's not good if true. The last beef I have is no APTX HD and or Sony's LDac. Ahim ain't this a pro monitoring set? Well then the blu-tooth should be pro.LDAC can go up to full 96 KHZ 24 bits at 999 KBPS.

I own some original M50's with a detachable cable mod. It was one of my first headphones. Looking back, I probably should've bought the DT770s, but I think all this is a learning experience. I've no regrets about buying my M50's. Are there much better choices out there for the price? Hell yes there are. That's why you're here Z, so that future young bucks just getting into audio don't make the same mistake I made. If it comes down to M50's or DT770s go with German engineering kids!

I listen to HD600s at home, but I needed a pair of closed headphones for low volume listening at work, so I bought an M50x. At first I thought it sounded like mud, but I wasn't really looking for perfection in a set of throw away work headphones. After some long listening sessions though, I found I really enjoy listening to them. No need for the hate. They don't sound natural by any means, and I would never game in them. but they are a pleasure to listen to.

that's because it's plastic, it's like how wires break, it's not because of that one time you pulled on them too hard, it's because of everyday bends, same logic with pretty much everything, it's like buying tempered glass for your phone thinking it survives a fall better than normal glass when it's in fact either false or tempered glass is even worse, when what matters about tempered glass is the scratch resistance, nothing is supposed to survive falls, but everyday wear should not fuck it

I personally enjoy the m50x's. They're have a very nice sound, especially since I prefer a more balanced sound. I'm just not huge on bass, it doesn't have to be the center of the sound for me. I respect your review, but I don't agree with it. And that's what a lot of Audio-Technica fans need to realize. You can disagree with a review and still respect it.

I'm Normal, I have never tried the m50x's my self so im not saying these are bad or good. However, seeing as Zeos probably has tried 100 more pairs of headphones than me, and most likely you, I feel like he has a better understanding on how these sounds compared to the other headphones listed for example. Sure, they are obviously not terrible, and if these are the only mid-range headphones you have tested (for a long period of time) you probably think they are good, because you have no reference point.

    • @totinospizzarolls4737
      @totinospizzarolls4737 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Meh, he is inconsistent between headphones.
Comparing the M50x to my Etymotic ER4XR, they really aren't as bad as Zeos paints it to be. The Sibilant region is elevated, but not terrible like how he described, and I find the bass fairly good. The only things I would nag on is the comfort, and the slightly scoped mids. This was very obvious coming from near perfect accurate IEMs.

I completely agree with you. My starter headphone was the M50, had them for 3 years before I recently upgraded to a DT990 Pro. I fucking love the DT990s, I really like highs. But when I put the pleather HM5 pads on the M50 it is unfuckingbearable and their soundstage is awful no matter what.
Edit - I cut out the back padding from the original pads and put them behind the HM5 pads. They are now actually listenable, but they still sound "sucked out".

As a classical musician, i find the m50x's sound signature quite good to my liking. I do understand all the point Z mentioned in the video, but in the end is what You prefer. My ear is quite sensitive to low frequency so that might be something....

Some of this could indeed be the subjective nature of one's hearing. I played Chopin Nocturnes through the ATs and that sounded a lot better (kind of) than rock or pop music.
But they still sounded shrill to me, so fuck that, back they went.

    • @bluecandyman1778

      @allexking ปีที่แล้ว

@@bluecandyman1778 They can be used for casual listening too if you know how to tweak them, this headphones have very powerful drivers and low distortion, than means that they will respond perfect to EQ, and you can literally copy any sound signature from other closed cans, you can make them sound like trash beats if you want too...By default they are made to be used in studios for MONITORING, idk what is this guy talking about, he has no idea what the purpose of these headphones is...

I opened them up and unscrewed the driver housing. There's a white ring that goes over the wire I cut it off and saved it and oh my goodness it's made them so much better. I looked around seeing if anyone else has done it. I haven't found anyone else who's done it.I realize comparing a open back to a closed is like apples to oranges. I'm not comparing them. I perfer the M50X's

Back in 2017 when I asked family to buy me headphones for Christmas, I went into a shop, with no online research, and listened to every headphone there. After I’d chosen the M50X, I realised that if I just had Googled good headphone it would have immediately appeared, so I wasted time, but I’m glad the choice was my own. I’ve enjoyed them and found them invaluable for sound production, and fun for music as well. Apart from the pads, they’ve also held up perfectly. But I have two problems with them - clampforce and soundstage. I know now how much better both could be, and though I’ve loved mine very much, I’m now ready to try something new.

I have my m50x's for about 4 years now 3 years on 15€ aftermarket velour pads. I've thrown them around my desk on my bed, I've had them squished in backpacks and travel cases and the cable got pulled out many times. And they still work absolutely great. I don't think they're uncomfortable but maybe that's because I have a rather slim head, though there was a bit of a headclamp feel when I first got them. The headband started slowly chipping apart about 3 months ago and official spare parts for that cost 36€ including 5€ shipping to germany. I haven't had other headphones for longer periods of time that are worth mentioning so these are my first pair of above 50€ so I don't wanna recommend them nescessarily just state my experience with them. Also that's why i've not mentioned anything about sound because that topic is highly comparison based.

I don’t think these are crap cans, but the midbass is bloomy, the mids are slightly recessed, the treble is a little metallic.
They are not neutral. But they are dynamic, they have fidelity, and good stereo separation. They are punchy. They sound fun.
For studio work I prefer K361 and SRH840, but these are good to have lying around a church soundbooth or just for jamming

I bought the M50x a few years back for production and mixing... sold them within 3 months to get some k702s. I didn't pay much attention to the sound difference from an enjoyment perspective but the quality of my mixing went up quite a notable ways, then when I was able to get some Adam A7x s the quality spiked again massively... The m50x was an okay headphone in that all frequencies were at least present, but there was no good point other than that. My AKGs sounded fine, but the cable sucks and the build quality is laughably bad... All in all i ended up with HD650s for just listening to music since doing any really mixing/mastering/production on headphones really isn't a solution (it took 3 years of personal experience to come to that conclusion). :D If you are an audio professional and you want some decent headphones, the m50x shouldn't be on your shortlist.

I strongly recommend better headphones, but not the 700s. I've heard a lot of negative things about their sound quality, which you can see for yourself in Z's reviews and the reviews/comments of others.
One thing to keep in mind about the 650s and the 600s is that they're quite hard to drive at 300ohms impedance. You'll probably need to spend a fair bit of cash on a DAC + amp setup rather than DAC/amp combo to make the most out of them.
If you don't wanna spend loads on a DAC + amp setup, there's the option of getting a pair of high-quality, open-back headphones that, unlike the 650s, are easy to drive. Things that come to mind are the Fidelio X2s, HiFiMan HE-400Ss w/ modded pads, and SHP9500s.
The X2s and 400Ss are similar in price to the 650s and the 9500s are really cheap for their quality. All of them will sound great without an amp, but will sound better with an amp/DAC combo under $250.
Another thing to consider when tossing up between your 2 options is whether you prefer open-back or closed-back headphones. Both have their pros and cons, so do some research about how they differ and decide which sounds better to you (no pun intended).
If I can stress one thing it's that thorough research is important! Don't be dumb like me and buy something without that much thought. Look under every nook and cranny of the internet to gather as much information as possible so you can make a really well-informed choice (unlike me lol).
If you're able to go to a hi-fi store and actually try out whatever headphones you're interested in to see how much you like them, do that. Nothing beats trying stuff out for yourself. Hope this helps.
If I seemed condescending and was telling you stuff you already knew, I'm sorry. I was playing it safe in case you were only just starting to look into headphones.

Here are some good places to look for closed-back. If you're gonna be using headphones outside a lot, say like 40% of the time or more, I think it's worth it to get closed-backs. But if you're not gonna be going outside that much, and spend the _large_ majority of your listening time at home, I personally think you should go with open and buy a decent pair of IEMs under $100 for listening outside, as they won't leak and they're hella convenient. But that's just me. Open isn't necessarily better than closed, it all depends on taste.

I have them to compare with the HD598s and the ATH-M50s with the HM5 Hybrid Pads is a god send. Everyone who has M50s should get them. Hello Z. I've shared your opinions on the M50X headphone. After experimenting with various ear pads, I find the original earpads (which you get 2 of ) with the Brainwavs HM5 headphone to strike a pleasant balance between bass, trebble and comfort. Hey Z Reviews, I know this video is kind of old now but I fell prey to the hype train and got a pair of M50xs before I saw this and I can say that I totally agree. As my first pair of "over ear monitoring headphones" I found that the highs have a painful sensation that tickles my ear canals at low volumes, and are sheering at louder volumes. The bass isn't great either. All in all, I'm underwhelmed.
Anyway, I play guitar and am an amateur music producer. I'm looking for something that I can use for monitoring, tracking and mixing, as well as for general use and music enjoyment. Do you have a few suggestions to fit that? Or do I really just need more than 1 set of cans to meet all of those needs?
    Thanks, great video

@@vibe1884 Just looked those up, but it looks like those are both open-backed. I was specifically looking for closed. I normally prefer to use the vintage speakers that I have hooked up to my stereo. My main purpose for headphones is so I don’t distract my wife while she’s working in the evenings. So I didn’t really want open-back.
So far my highest quality headphone experience is with Beats that I got free when I bought my MacBook. From the research I’ve been doing recently, it sounds like there are a lot of options better than those, so I feel like I can only go up from where I am. But I’m just breaking into the world of high-quality headphones. The M50Xs just came up so often and I heard almost nothing but good stuff. And the price was right. 🤷🏻‍♂️
But if you’ve got recommendations of other good closed-backs for around $150, I’ll take a look!
The biggest competitor I’ve seen is Beyerdynamics DT770. But they’re a bit more expensive, and don’t have a removable cable and don’t fold, so they’re not as portable. I don’t trust that I’m quite enough of an “audiophile” to be able to effectively tell the difference in sound, so at this point I’m happy with trading a slight drop in quality for the conveniences and lower price of the M50X.

Just like mk3's, try pads that crush, specifically the Shure 1540 pads, these sound pretty good and are super comfy - like the most comfortable headphones you will ever put on. @mikeexits 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm just gonna put this here for anyone considering buying these: I loved my m50x for all the time I had them, they're my first hi-fi headphones.
But after 6 years (today) the left earpiece suddenly was able to bend away from my head, so when I wear them now the left earpiece won't stay on my head, the very top corner does but the bottom pulls away; the only way I can use them now is if I hold the left headphone to my ear. I took good care of them (though admittedly, I just put them in my backpack when traveling; no case).
Got the Beyer Dynamic DT 990 Pro and hohoholy Jesus they're great. Bass is less loud, open back, non-detachable cord, and they don't fold, but they sound genuinely amazing. Stereo field is muuuch wider and more clear than the m50x (to my ears, we all have different preferences). Even the clarity of the sounds and layers of songs sound clearer and less muddled/blurry than on the m50x. I fell in love demoing these at guitar center so I ended up getting them after lots of comparing. Not as nice for phone use because they're quieter and I have to turn my phone volume up all the way to match the volume of 75% on my m50x, but the clarity is definitely a tier or two above the m50x. I use it mostly for studio music production anyway, so I can boost my audio interface's volume to compensate.
I only wish the android volume boosting apps actually worked. But I'm not planning on taking these outside the house often so it's not a big deal. The studio is #1.

He says that the Shure SRH840 is what the M50x should be. When looking at the graph, the M50x has less of what annoyed him, the bass and harsh treble. While the Shure SRH840 has significantly more energy at 8Khz-10Khz and 75hz -500hz. Really doesn't add up.

At first i thought i had damaged my ear drums listening somehow, but i found out it was likely just these headphones. Having these at 80-85% volume on a phone were unbearable for me and caused pain after just a few minutes of listening. I lowered the volume which helped greatly, but then i could not listen to the music. I tried my old earbuds or headphones no issues in terms of pain and having them as loud.
Going to go ahead and try out the SHP9500's. I'm hoping these are more what i enjoy. ATH-AD900X's, HD 600, and Beyerdynamic DT 770 are priced way to high for me. 300+ CAD dollars. SHP9500's come to 120$.

Somehow everyone who hates the m50x's with a passion always seems to point out bad build quality. I can understand people not liking the sound, or the comfort... all fair points, but criticizing the build quality just makes you sound like a professional contrarian. I don't know what about them feels cheap to you, but I've had them for a couple of years now. They literally have thousands of hours of use. They've been thrown around in cable bags, alongside drum hardware, they have been stepped on and had the cable yanked out dozens of times and they look brand new. The build quality is exactly what it should be. These are headphones for tracking. I understand that if you bought them look kewl 4 skewl you might be disappointed, but they do what they're supposed to for a reasonable price.

I'm just wearing the M50x, tried them at bass guitar tracking and noticed right away a harshness at about 4k. I did my research and there it is, the few and rare that have the same issue. I think you are right, I tried to make myself think that they are great and that I am the issue because the whole world likes them but... the treble, the soundstage and kind of the bass to are worse than what I've had with my Creative Fatality that just died on me and they were like 30 bucks...

I disagree with any claims saying that these cans are fit to monitor or mix any music. Beyond the immediate flaws, the M50x's timbre is skewed across the board. It's a shame. =\ But my regular M50 is perfect for the job, for some reason.

I ordered these via amazon, the box had no seal, they looked new.
At first, they sounded good IMO, however my deal breaker was something different.
They had stereo imbalance, which is the most annoying thing ever in headphones. After an intense burn-in session, the stereo imbalance was still present (Left was louder than right).
Sound was well detailed, having used earpods, bass heavy sony's, sennheiser 280 pro steelseries siberia v2 & bang & olufsen h6 2nd gen. I listen to headphones @ 40-60% volume on my MBP or iPhone, even lesser if its earpods. Unless its my favourite track.
I listened to these on 50-70% volume and didnt feel like cranking the volume up bcuz its lazer! So at a moderate level these sounded really nice, detail was very good, bass was nice, I was enjoying music, all sorts House, Orchestra, Piano, Jazz, Electronic. Bright & Fun.
I actually purchased a lot of music while listening the previews on iTunes store, almost all the tracks were better, especially the VOCALS, that was the thing which kept me interested & how balanced it is overall. I was very happy with the sound detail BUT i couldnt get over the STEREO IMBALANCE. That ruined everything. I know these headphones dont look great and neither are they very comfortable. What is REALLY BAD about these headphones is that THEY ARE NOT WHAT THEY SAY IT IS FOR! Worst headphones for sound monitoring!
If the LEFT channel sounds louder than the RIGHT one it doesnt matter how good it sounds.
I ordered a replacement, hoping its going to be better BUT NO! The second pair of headphones were worse. It sounded MUDDY & DULL + Stereo Imbalance.
Also the soundstage can confuse you sometimes, like the positioning of instruments in V-MODA crossfade m100 but much worse. As much as I liked them for how FUN they were at first, I was disappointed and returned them back.
Audio-Technica has made a mistake & its m50x. They actually sound terrible.

Don't agree at all. The m50x's sound fine. Your ears are different. Are the m50x's my goto HP's no but neither are my Grado sr325e's. And on some tracks nothing touches my Grados. I had Sennheiser hd 650's and sold them as they were so veiled it was a disaster. So are the hd598's. My favs are my Beyer dt 990's and my ath-r70x's. When your hearing evolves you no longer enjoy music you analyze it and that's when you can no longer be subjective. I've had to retrain my listening as I could no longer emjoy music because all I was doing was reviewing the headphone and not the music. This industry has done nothing but make us spend tons of cash on junk. Bottom line is find a place you can take your listening device and whatever your budget is listen to headphones in that range and stick with it. This amping, dacing, changing pads modding has done nothing but make just plain having fun listening to music a horror show. Heck I can remember when I had 40 dollar Sennheiser ear buds and I was loving the tunes. Now its wait to much treble on this not enough soundstage on that and guess what I'm out like 5k. II have 3 dap's 4 headphone amps and 25 headphones/iems and sold 10. This is not fun its punishment.

athr70x are just as good as the 600's and are cheaper here. analyzing is a curse something I am overcoming thus why I like my dt990's for movies. hey I like Z he's not afraid to tell the truth. and most of the time I check to see if he has reviewed before I consider it and will continue to. but the m50x's are well liked but so are beats and I heard the latest beats and they are not bad. heck I am even enjoying my qc35's as fabricated as they are.

yes comparing to the hifiman, i could hear that the ath m50 had no soundstage, was up there in the treble and recessed mids low end was ok maybe a little exaggerated on stock pads. They did not sound very enjoyable. The only thing they do well is revealing detail in the music. They push the music forward to reveal the detail and make it easier to analyse the music. They are good monitoring headphones thats all they are. If you have never heard soundstage before then you will like these headphones.

    I'm happy with my M50xBTs
I don't have that much comparison, but for the price I paid (about 170€) they deliver - and they are wireless. It may be a compromise, but I just hate cables when I'm on the train etc. They break and they're in the way..
The sound seems balanced to me and I can wear them for a few hours without feeling uncomfortable. Only the ear pads are a bit to small for me - but that's because of piercings and tunnels, so I'm gonna switch them out - and that's how I landed on this channel. Sadly the video about the ear pads was more like a show of and less informative..

I bought these almost 2 years ago when my original M50s were wearing out. The hinge on the left can broke in 2 weeks. Finally got them fixed this summer, but they do still feel loose and cheap. I don't know what happened, because the M50s were very robust. They eventually completely konked out on a plane and I bought the MSR-7s at the layover airport out of desperation. They immediately sounded better to me. They've lasted me a year and a half so far and show hardly any sign of wear (the wire has faded from brown to a greenish brown for some reason, but that's it). I have no plans of replacing them.

You got a lemon Cole. My bro abused the s*it out of his original M50s until they broke years later, I've had my M50Xs for a few years and I often sleep while wearing them. Neither the hinges nor the cable have given up, and I don't baby them at all. The only crappy components are the headband and the earpads, which suck donkey ass as they peel off in just a year or so.

Haven't listened to them enough to write a review, but with the Brainwaves Hybrid ProStock pads on and powering off of my Conexant Cx31993 these seem to sound good. These are really nice for everyday headphones, and I know there are "better"/cheaper sets that might be able to satasfy me more for a bit less or more than I paid for them used ($60 Cad+$40 something Cad for pads) but I really wanted to hear these controversial cans. This video is kind of silly. He rips on the Audio Technica's...a $150ish pair of headphones... They're not meant to compete with HD800s for God's sake. The ATH M50's have solid performance, particularly for their price, making them a good value. I own a pair, and find their sound quality to be quite good. There's a reason why these headphones are so popular. To me, it seems like the reviewer is hating on the 50s because it's "cool" so to speak - he's swimming against the grain if you will - being controversial. There's absolutely no reason why the reviewer should be so absolutely dismissive of the M50s; they're not nearly as bad as he claims.

    • @staticxreset
      @staticxreset 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

josh cantin For $150 you can get instead of the M50X:
      -Status Audio CB-1
      -M40X
      -Phillips SHP9500
-Fostex T50Rp (but a mod is needed)
      -AKG K553
...and a shit ton of IEMs that still beat the M50s...
The argument of "you're hating on them because they're popular" is invalid, considering the dude has a heard a lot of better stuff. So if you feel offended by this review because it's too harsh on these mediocre headphones, it's not his problem.

    • @steadychaosproductions3376
      @steadychaosproductions3376 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I'm not offended, just pointing out the obvious, he's hating on a solid piece of kit because it's "cool" to do so. Him having heard other headphones has nothing to do with my argument. The ATH-M50's have approached near legendary status in terms of performance for price, and to come out and so aggressively berate them indicates clickbait bias.
