Thanks for making this review. I recently got the cowin SE7s, extremely dissatisfied with those. But after watching this review I decided to return them to get these.
@@RoxyYTP One more question about m40x with glasses. I am a student and I work on desktop computer and paperwork all the time. So my question is does it move you glasses and feel uncomfortable when moving your head slightly? (look at front and look at your feet)
Got to my local store today, seller told me m50x are sold out and only left are couple of m40x. I was disappointed and then got back home and watched this review and I was like, Oh yeah! Now listening this with my new 40x.
Biased? Ah well, to make you even more happy as a buyer that has a chance to directly compare the M40x with M50x, Shure840, Oppo PM3, DT770, and many others, I'd say they are on the same lvl, just different preference, with more durable build. So, good buy for us :)
Ah, you don't believe me? OK, for PM3, it's good, and overall it is an upgrade, but only just slightly, they sound quite similar IMO with no glaring advantage given by the Oppo, thus I regard them not worth it as the 3-4x price difference. DT770 is noteworthy in its bass and has good soundstage, but that's all, it has anemic mids that I dislike, and adding thicker pads (HM5 on mine) on the M40x make the soundstage on the AT as big on the Beyer, 840 does sound balanced and fun, but my sound preference on its mids isn't as favorable, I like the mids on M40x more, and on build, The Shure is crumbling at every minute I hold it. (V-Moda too bassy, XB950 is just bass monster with surprisingly good detail) Etc etc. It is subjective, but after testing many closed cans, the one I deemed a worthy "upgrade" for me is to M70x, of which sound quality upgrade is vastly apparent on 1st few minute of listen. As you can see, I put a lot of focus on mids, especially on the female vocal performance (a bit too particular about this one) , I also like a good deal of detail, I don't like too many bass as I it can be a bit too distracting, though I crave for them when watching movies. I do have my other headphones for it so it's alright for me. It all depends on preferences, song collections, and priorities really.
+Muhammad Kharismawan ... a lot of description, without much substance, eg what songs? how do various instruments sound diff from can to can? what are the bitrates? how much amplification is avail to each? source? if you have ever read an in-print review of a set of speakers, or like component, they have a test set of songs, where the qualities of each are given ratings and description, and compared to a reference. otherwise, it's all arbitrary, and liable to change with the days weather forecast. it's unfortunate, that most all online subjective reviews are constructed in similar fashion. no comparisons to live music, reference speakers, ABing side by side, with established benchmarks. Tyll and Bob Katz remarked on this matter in their "Big Sound" headphone review. Bob, even after hearing some of the better flagship headphones, commented on how poor they were relative to good home speakers. The use of correction curves was what brought the final sound into line with what they both thought was correct. didn't mean for this to become a megapost, but things in the headphone world tend to be simplified down to a point of vagueness, where almost everyting can be said to be good or better, despite serious shortcomings.
Oh yeah it does. Though it all in the end depends on the satisfaction the buyer get out of it no? I do admit I'm being very vague on my reply, but it isn't like I'd change my own opinion from me trying out things using my own ear and my own set of priorities.
the 50s are a bit too bass-y and the treble is lacking, but for the average listener the 50s are good. Remember: the majority of people think Beats are top shelf.
Matt Schwartz haha i know what you mean, but the sales on expensive beats means there is sadly somehow a market for them still despite woke internet stans screaming how bad they are (they are)
I got my M40x's based purely on this review, even getting new earpads (the HM5's in the description instead of sheepskin because money) and now that I've had them for a bit I love em. Hands down best headphones I've used to date (even if I'm new to higher quality audio). Love the 1st person review format and humor. Even if I won't be using much of the stuff reviewed the format and humor keep me coming back, thanks for doing what you do.
Brad van Bakel damn son calm down a little. If the guy likes how the pads feel and decides to keep it it's his business. Don't go off on him for liking comfort.
Got my pads today and what i experienced in comfort and sound quality was unbelievable. These pads on the m40x make this headphone an absolute killer. The music sounds so fresh, open and the bass is like icing on the cake. I get an eargasam every time i use them. And the comfort as good. Nothing touches my ear, it fits snuggle inside the pads. Anyone with this headphone must get these pads its like a match made in heaven.
My budget was around 200 and I could not find 1 set of headphones that would meet all my needs. As silly as it may sound, just buying 2 headphones never even occurred to me, at that price range I didn't even think it was possible. I bought both the Philips SHP9500 and the M40X with all the mods you recommended and I am still within my budget, Thank you for the great reviews and the audio education Z.
I tried the M40x before the M50x and I was utterly disappointed when I heard the M50x. The M40x has a much more lively sound and the sparkle and shimmer in the highs are absolutely nonexistent in the M50x. I was blown away by the M40x sound but the M50x just sounded meh. Thank you for this review, hopefully this gets spread around more.
Thomas Kruyt Hi! I'm gonna get my first "real" headphones. I have a budget for the ATH M40x. But I'm considering the Sony MDRXB950BT. Because it has most of the features that's good for listening on the go. I know that the M40x are better but my question is does it got real good bass. And one downgrade is that the 40x wire doesn't even have a mic or play and pause button on the cable. Please Help Just a guy who listen to much rap and wants a good bass.
I have one of these and I just love it! I bought to hear good neutral sounds for editing videos on the laptop. And of course, for the price. Now you have made me deeply want to use new pads and cables. Congratulations on the channel, and keep making brutally honest reviews. That makes all the difference.
Not enough sub bass, treble too boosted, comfort is shit. The K361 is the obvious best choice nowadays.. but I still somehow love these. Sure I wouldn't mind more subbass, but the bass shape on these is so perfect, it somehow makes up for the roll off. It's got that nice punch without sounding muddy to me. And the treble peaks, sure, they're siblant, piercing and sharp. But only in certain cases. Maybe 1-2%. The rest is beautiful. I love the sparkle and clarity. And I never would've found out I like sparkle and clarity without these. As for comfort, yeah, it's shit. The pads were made for a 5 year old Japanese child and the headband might as well be pure metal with how little padding there is. Grow some hair out for padding, carefully stretch the headband and earpads, survive, then get some brainwavz pads for $15 and never look back. The 361 is the safe option. It's flat. If you like flat, go for it. If you want something exciting, the M40X still kicks ass. You'll hate it at first and it'll hate you, but give it time and you'll never want to put them away again.
please, give me your sincere opinion about this headphone, if is a better choice as the Fostex RP50 MKIII or RP50 MK III better as the AT40X; I will buy one of the two very soon however still very insecure where to spend the money, I need a flat response for my mixes in my home studio, not for listening music for pleasure or similar! Many greetings from Germany and thank you so much for your great videos and Infos! At times you are very funny, keep it up!
Like many of you, I took Z’s advice and purchased the ZMF Cowhides for the m40x. The sound changed from the stock pads but here’s why I feel it’s for the better. Sound is subjective, but for me the mid bass on these stock is a little too much and while it sounds great for the most part, fatigue is an issue with not only the sound but comfort. The ZMF’s pretty much tame both of these concerns for me. The bass is still there but a little more refined and the distance between the pad and ears makes it easy to keep these on your head for hours.... and that is worth the price for me. Considering the headphones are now $79 and the pads $50, you’re looking at a set of $129 headphones that you can wear and enjoy for hours in comfort with a much better soundstage than stock. Thanks for the vids, your ears seem to be on par with mine and I enjoy the insight you bring to the table.
Do you think the m40x are good for gaming aswell? I have seen great reviews about them and i do some sound design stuff edit videos listen to music , but i do game a lot aswell, LOL , CS GO, etc and i just can't find anywhere some good feedback about gaming with those. Thanks in advance
Maybe you can try researching philips shp9500. It's open back though, so maybe the bass can be lacking for your taste, but it's fit with my taste for gaming
Thank you for recomendations man, I´ve watched a lot of videos of both the m50x and m40x but even though the m50s are the most popular I noticed that the only ones to recommend them over the m40s were the ones who dont own the 40s. So when I saw this video I knew why that was happening.
m50(x) are like the SAO of headphones. If you have never experienced good content then you think it is amazing, but after watching/listening to other stuff you realize how shitty it is.
Its mostly the outcome of some tech youtubers probably getting sent/sponsored the M50Xs and then everyone just bought them after using cheap stuff and though "wow this is what luxury sounds like". My friend literally has never listened to anything but the M50Xs and he now believes everything else is shit.
I just bought these based on your recommendation. I love them, good quality and good sound stage. My son loves to game with them so I bought him a pair too. However, comfort is an issue. I want to get HM5 pads, do you recommend HM5 pads? If so, which ones? The pleather or valor? Thanks in advance!
The only thing I dislike about the M40x is the way they press down on my ears, causing pain within about an hour of continued use. I usually have to take a break every 45 minutes to massage my hear flaps otherwise the pain can last quite a while. By contrast I can wear a pair of Sennheiser HD 280s all day without fatigue, which is why my M40x are stuffed in a pouch in a drawer.
Are the HM5 Angled protein leather pads notably worse than the ZMF cowhide pads for the M40x? (in terms of sound quality and comfort) Because if I wanted the ZMF pads I would have to import them from the USA to Canada which (along with the higher price) would make them 2 to 3 times more expensive than the HM5s. (I haven't purchased the M40x's yet and am not sure if I will, so keep that in mind) Update: I bought the M40Xs and have had them for over nine months now, and they are AMAZING! Worth every penny. I'm using the stock pads right now but I might get some nicer pads at some point.
Do you really need angled pads? I have the m40x with hm5 angled sheepskin and they start hurting where the padding is 2,5cm as the m40x cup does not really swivel. Also is the sheepskins worth the 2x price? I would like to try the straight pleather hm5s.
It'll be subjective, but I felt justified in reaching for the MSR7. B&H in NYC has these two pairs right next to each other so I got to switch between them while browsing.
This video came at a perfect time. My pads and wire are dying out after four years of using my M40xs so these recommendations will be a huge help. Thank you!!
I seem to find myself watching this guy every time I need a set of headphones for something. Love the aune dac and amp stack and balanced hd700s for my main rig, hopefully these m40x work out for my laptop setup.
Can confirm that the pads are a really good fit for the M40X. I tried all 3 of Brainwavz's offerings and all of them butchered the low end on the M40X for some reason. These pads are a massive step up in comfort from the stock pads (though the Brainwavz velour definitely feels the best), and insulate better as well. Regarding the sound, it must be due to the better sound isolation that the music sounds "cleaner" and more neutral. The stock pads had nothing wrong with them acoustics-wise, just the terrible ergonomics. The cowhides also fit over my ears better (I have large ears). I have the M30X hooked up to my PC though, and I must say that the Brainwavz velours are a perfect fit for them.
Thank you for this recommended setup - these cans + pads + wire. I just received them and am very happy. Excellent sound, very comfortable and when I add my DAC a really pleasurable submersion.
@@pestokong6228 Yes, if you're using the stock earpads (the ones that came with the headphones), it will hurt (from my experience), I recently bought replacement angled earpads with memory foam and the custom earpads sit very comfortably even with spectacles
Think its helpful having the angled earpads? The driver is already angled. Seems like it would direct the audio in the wrong direction unless you just need the space for wide ears.
Really good review, i've watch it like 5 times cause i wanna buy these headphone, but i have just one question, does the huge pads make you sweat? Cause i wanna buy them for music and play games too.
I bought it thanks to your amazing review! I tried my friends M50x out and my M40x sounds way more flat which is what I wanted :-) I saved about a 100$ thanks to you! Keep up the great work dude, fuck them biased reviewers!
does the HM5's Angled affect the sound? I am looking to buy it and have read some reviews on how it decreases the sound quality. Please let me know! thanks.
I went to Guitar Center three times and listened to all of the headphones and found the ATH-M40x headphone was superior to the others every time I was comparing. I listened to them ignoring name brands and pricing. This head phone seams to be well balanced with out the cheesy bass boosting technology which would make it impossible to record with. For a closed back head phone for monitoring recordings you just cant go wrong with the ATH-M40x.
+HeavyProfessor compared to ath m40xs. see I 1st bought m40xs they are good but they got too much clamping force, this may vary for person to person ,so I returned and bought hm5 and they got less clamp and more neutral sound signature, better pads and u get extra pair too with hard case so I think it's better choice.
V moda crossfade Lp2 or AudioTechnica ATH-M40X? which to buy?? I listen to boombap hip hop and sometimes classicals. Pls help me with your recommendation. I want good bass and comfort.
Creative Aurvana Live! still best headphones, in many aspects, why? I bought recently ATH M40x, and I not happy :( 1) Heavy, loud bass (due to problems with 50-150hz, not balanced well) 2) Soundstage: average, nothing special 3) Overall sound a little harsh at high frequences Mainly I listen to Trance (Dream, Psy), Ambient, Instrumental, Soundtracks, IDM, Gabber, Various Rock Genres, dnb.
Hi Z, nice review!! What do you think is the best for studio monitoring/recording: Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Shure SRH840, Brainwavz HM5 Beyer Dynamic DT770 (80-250Ω) Status Audio CB-1 SoundMAGIC HP150 Sony MDR-7506 Sennheiser HD280 pro
I have a pair of m40x's and I put pads from a razer kraken on them, the pads are very similar to my cooler master's mh751's if u know how comfortable those are. Much better than the cow hide pads imo
yep i went through a pair of m40s cause of the shitty build and 2 broken hinges but had to buy the same fucking m40s again cause they sound amazing. all the Mseries are like bad COKE
Hey Z, I plan to buy these for gaming, I have a couple of questions before I finalize the purchase of the accessories. You recommend the ZMF Oval Earpads in cow hide in the Vid but in reddit you recommend the Brainwavz Angled Memory Foam Earpads; which do you recommend for gaming? If I purchased the Brainwavz, would I still need to add the small piece of foam (as in the vid) before attaching the pads? Since the driver is already angled, is it necessary to purchase the angled earpads? I have a AudioEngine D1 and an Astro MixAmp, should I just use the AE D1 and trash the MixAmp (or vice versa)? or can/should I attach both of em?
You should check out the $50 m20x just out of curiosity. I have the m40x and love them, but now I reallly want to get the pads you linked to make them better.
I own both and like both for different reasons. Mids are fuller on M40x, but deep bass is much more fun on 50x (think movies, music) I can see why 40x is better for monitoring though Construction - 50x hands down - better hinge system not crack prone.
Bought the headphones and they are amazing. I was a little doubtful about getting the pads but after trying them on the headphones...wow, its a world of difference. These pads are so soft, feels like im not wearing headphones at all. Definitely worth purchasing if you have the chance.
Hi I wanted to buy zmf cowhide pads, but the link no longer exists.. so is it possible to notice me about the name of ear pads? it would help me a lot. Thank you
are the m40x good for gaming? cuz I'm looking to spend 100$ on headphones and add a mod mic so the max I can spend is 150 if there is any better headphones for the same price lmk
ProbablyPublic fucking amazing although I'm comparing them to Samsung earbuds you get form the phone their just so good and not to high or low in any area
Love your reviews! Do you think this M40x are better than sony mdr 7506 for mixing purposes? And do you think there are any good alternative to these two headphones for mixing in 2019? Thank you very much!
Mr. Z, I love your passionate reviews! Just want to check one thing: I followed your link to the ZMF oval ear pads but when I read the measurements on their website, they appear much larger than my new m40x's. Would you be able to check the link again to confirm that it brings you to the model that you use? Thanks so much! Mr. K Z, a passionate string player
here you're using the ZMF Cowhide ovals (which are out of stock, of course) and in reddit you mention the Brainwavz Angled Memory Foam Earpad. Should I wait (I don't know how long) for the ZMFs or should I get the Brainwavz? How noticeable is the sound signature between the two?
The pad is more a comfort upgrade then a sound one. The bigger the pad the wider the soundstage. So you can definitely get the HM5 pad and be happy. The Cowhide just makes you even more happy.
I don't get why people find these uncomfortable. Of course the pads are not exactly clouds to the ears, but they're far from being bad, really. I can use it for 5 hours straight with no problems whatsoever, even though the pressure to the ears can be a little annoying at times. As for sound quality, I was honestly expecting more. But yes, it's pretty good. Clarity and instrument separation are nice, imaging is great and it boggles my mind how people say these lack bass, THEY DON'T. At least for me, they're right on the threshold of having too much bass. Just for reference, i'm coming from a TDK MP100 and a Sony MDR-XB650 as daily drivers (both great headphones, even though the latter is kinda bassy) and ocasionally using my old Sennheisers (RS120 and HD425). My main use is music and then movies/videos, I wouldn't recomend the M40x if gaming is your priority. Now, keep in mind that the M40x is somewhat V-shaped, in some tracks it's clearly noticeable how the vocals felt sidelined in the background while the highs stand out, bass is not boomy but the sound definitely feels a bit muddy at times. Despite that, I do like the sound signature. Well, overall the M40x is pretty good and at its price range it's a serious contender, it's as good as some $500 plus headphones. And to be fair, any closed headphone can sound muddy, everyone can have a different experience due to the anatomy of the ear and pressure sensitivity, it all comes to personal taste too. I would say give it a try and don't listen to finicky audio engineers and wannabe audiophiles saying shit like "It'S pUrE GarBaGe" or whatever. BTW, a friend who works in the audio industry tested dozens of different headphones at a local store (even some expensive ones) and ended up getting the M40x since he really liked it, so I guess it means something :)
Just ordered them. Thanks to you i don't have any regrets from getting them over the m50x because i read a lot of people saying that the m40x are not bassy
@@Jay_LM Nice! That's the right choice, I personally don't like the M50x since they're so bassy, the M40x is overall better and well balanced. Perfect for mixing and monitoring too.
I’ve owned both of these headphones, owned the m40’s and then the m50’s. The m40’s are a little softer, very easy listening and great for the money. But the sound quality is clearly better on the m50’s, much clearer, punchier. Little bit brighter which isn’t to everyone’s taste, however these headphones are held back if you don’t use an amp. Even a portable FIIO amp transforms these headphones. Widens the soundstage and really just makes them that extra bit better. Just broke my m50’s after 7 years of owning, sat on the ear cup so it snapped the joint. Going to just tape it up solid and then invest in a pair of m70’s, see what I think of them!
hi,i bought used M40X i have never tried any studio or monitoring headphones before best. i had before is hyperx cloud which i like sound signature it's warm bass is punchy,so my m40x are much more detailed and very crispy bat whole low end seems empty like it lacks the punch and body to it, it's there but even if i use EQ it's not near as. impressive than on my. hyperx cloud ,the vocals are great also imaging is much better than on my hyperx ,is it supossed to sound like this? bcs i have never tried any expensive pro headphones or monitors and it suprissed me and made me question if my m40x are damaged or something's...
tollph3 hello, I think it probably depends on what you’re used to. A lot of cheaper headphones offer huge amounts of bass and then people think that is the norm. So when they get a more expensive pair of headphones, usually the bass is not dominant. With monitor headphones it’s important every part of the sound stage is clear. Have you broken the m40x in? Both my m40s and m50s sounded much better after a week of breaking in on medium volume music. Also, do you have a an amp? I use a FIIO portable amp which really transforms the headphones. Is there any chance you can return your m40’s? As I believe a pair of m50’s would suit your needs a bit better. If not just try get used to the sound signature, realise that headphones aren’t supposed to have super heavy rumbly bass, and headphones like beats which have huge amounts of bass, have terrible mids, awful treble and no soundstage. But people who are used to this, still think that they’re the best headphones going, when they’re really not. So try getting used to the m40’s, adapt your listening to a more neutral sound signature, invest in a fiio amp+dac. And if you can swap for the m50’s then give that a go, as to me the m50’s are unbeatable. Hope that helps, sorry for the slightly jumbled reply, let me know what you do.
tollph3 there is also a chance that if you bought them used that the speakers are blown, sorry I only just saw that you said you got them used. Which obviously makes things like returning harder. Do they crackle, or sound vibratey at all? If they do then they’re 100% blown.
@@ESKATEUK no they do not crackle or sound broken just too "Tinny", i think i'm just probably not used to the flat monitor sound signature ,also i don't dedicated have amp or DAC, i tried them through old(25+years) hi-fi SONY stereo system (which is connected to my pc through RCA -- 3.5mm jack)using 6.3mm headphone output and they did sound better as any headphone i tried connecting it to.... Also they sound better with HYPERX Cloud earpads and original and are much more comfortable ,stock pads are trash its unbereable for longer listening.Maybe i will buy new m40x and se if they sound same and if they do will return them and keep old ones just to be sure if there is nothing wrong with them and that iam just not used to flat sounding studio headphones. Also purchase brainwavz pads they actually have which will also fit my hyperx and m40x so i can experiment a bit more , maybe buy cheap FiiO amp/dac in the future ,heard they are really good for the price, which one would u recommend more around 100€ Fiio q1 2(100€) or... E10k OLYMPUS 2 (85€)? Thanks.
tollph3 yeah give it a go my friend, and I have the fiio e17, highly recommend that one, very well built and fantastic for the price. You can get one used for around £50 so recommend that option. I do find the m40’s a little on the tinnier side, it does take some getting used to but as you say an amp does help. If you can ever get your hands on a pair of m50’s to listen to give them a go. All the best
Should I get these or Brainwavz HM5 / NVX XPT100? A lot of genres to cover (Electronic/Experimental/Glitch - Drum & Bass/Neurofunk - Prog / Alt Rock - Jazz / Soul - Hip Hop - Musical Scores), and for commute purposes (and to have a closed headphones, alongside my open AKG)
Just got the m40's, their amazing. How would you say the cow hides fit on your head/ear compared to the stock pads? I immediately took them off (the stock) and put on my Hyperx Cloud Pads on because they fit and they're over ear, no contact with the ear at all, while the stock pads for the m40's are right on my ear.
just got the pads. major difference. uncomfortable with original pads. also improved sound. you are the man. I continue to trust your judgement. thank you. keep up the good work.
I like your review, I like the way everybody deskribes these, but I have a really big ears. I tryed them on with the stock pads and... It hurts... What is the difference betveen the stock and the replasement pads in size? Or... Do I have some other headphone option? I would try the MSR7, but I do not have the chance. What are those like compare to these - size ways? I tryed also eyerdynamic DT 770, but the cable is soooo long to cary around... :-(. Thank you :-)
Is there any difference in ear pad diameter for the stock pads? The only place near me that had tester pairs was a best-buy that only had the M50’s. They were super comfortable for me, and fit really well around my ears, but the highs did kill it for me like the reviews say. So hoping the 40’s are the same size wise despite a smaller driver inside. Going to invest in the nicer pads later but the headphones that I have now are dying.

Lmao, too true.
John Dow The treble is lacking? Lol

I got my M40x's based purely on this review, even getting new earpads (the HM5's in the description instead of sheepskin because money) and now that I've had them for a bit I love em. Hands down best headphones I've used to date (even if I'm new to higher quality audio).
Love the 1st person review format and humor. Even if I won't be using much of the stuff reviewed the format and humor keep me coming back, thanks for doing what you do.
what a fucken sheep. if you looked at 1 or 2 reviews about the HM5 pads you'd have seen that there are cheaper pads that dont fuck the sound to hell
how is the sound leak with the HM5's? and how much does it change the sound signature?

Got my pads today and what i experienced in comfort and sound quality was unbelievable. These pads on the m40x make this headphone an absolute killer. The music sounds so fresh, open and the bass is like icing on the cake. I get an eargasam every time i use them. And the comfort as good. Nothing touches my ear, it fits snuggle inside the pads. Anyone with this headphone must get these pads its like a match made in heaven.
Opie Krumpus How are they so far? Thinking of getting this year...
߆ Claed They are great the sound and comfort is fabulous. They sound very rich and full and very nice clear sound. And the pads are very comfortable
Okay thanks!
Just yesterday i would have thought you were being OTT with your praise....
You think the same effect could be achieved with the (much cheaper) angled brainwavz pads (pleather or sheepskin)?
Thanks for not cutting out the padding install. Helps everyone else out.

LOOOOOOOOOOOL Zeos my man
My budget was around 200 and I could not find 1 set of headphones that would meet all my needs. As silly as it may sound, just buying 2 headphones never even occurred to me, at that price range I didn't even think it was possible. I bought both the Philips SHP9500 and the M40X with all the mods you recommended and I am still within my budget, Thank you for the great reviews and the audio education Z.
Remember kids: M50x for attention, M40x for results.
remember kids: beats for attention, philips x2hr for results.
@jon3rockaholic in what way you get attention with headphones that you can only use on your home
When you sniff that pads and said "It smells like a couch" that part really killed me dude 🤣🤣
Many thanks for your detailed and brutally honest reviews. Got the M40x and now listening to you on them. Cheers dude
i bought my m40x's a week ago. my hm5 pads just got in. entirely different headphone. never taking em off. thank you so much for the review.
Thomas Kruyt Did the HM5's change the sound at all?
Thomas Kruyt Hi! I'm gonna get my first "real" headphones. I have a budget for the ATH M40x.
But I'm considering the Sony MDRXB950BT. Because it has most of the features that's good for listening on the go.
I know that the M40x are better but my question is does it got real good bass. And one downgrade is that the 40x wire doesn't even have a mic or play and pause button on the cable.
Please Help
Just a guy who listen to much rap and wants a good bass.
did you get the angled or the standards? If you got the standards, then how was the sound quality?
WHY DID YOU LEAVE US HANGING?!!???
just got my ATH-M40x and the new cable. i got the 30$ angled pads though. these headphones blow away my hyperx cloud headphones.
Does that shorter cable he recommended plug into an iPhone?
Got the m40x’s for five bucks in a store liquidation
holy shit, nice
That is an amazing deal. Only excessively jealous
Should of bought all of em
lucky bastard
I got them an amazon liquidation store called DN3, you never know what you will find there was only one of them though
I have one of these and I just love it! I bought to hear good neutral sounds for editing videos on the laptop. And of course, for the price. Now you have made me deeply want to use new pads and cables. Congratulations on the channel, and keep making brutally honest reviews. That makes all the difference.
Just put the ZMF Oval Pads on my 40's and wow didn't know ear pads could make such a differences.
So, it's almost 4.5 years later. Do you have a functional link to the pads? Would appreciate it. Thanks for the review/mod vid.
THEYRE ONLY $75 WHAT. Okay these may be my wearing outside headphones for music
Literally bought one after watching this! thanks to your waifu :3

Nikola Drums Exactly what I’m wondering
I am thinking of buying the 40's, but I want a bit more bass. You think I could EQ the bass up a bit of the 40's using software?
still hold up well?
please, give me your sincere opinion about this headphone, if is a better choice as the Fostex RP50 MKIII or RP50 MK III better as the AT40X; I will buy one of the two very soon however still very insecure where to spend the money, I need a flat response for my mixes in my home studio, not for listening music for pleasure or similar!

@@tinoderyanto7668 Appreciate your comment but i really do need closed back ones, so i 'm really looking for some feedback about the m40x for gaming.
They are great for gaming, don't listen to idiots commenting "don't buy this for gaming". It's amazing. I've had mine for 7 years now.
Thank you for recomendations man, I´ve watched a lot of videos of both the m50x and m40x but even though the m50s are the most popular I noticed that the only ones to recommend them over the m40s were the ones who dont own the 40s. So when I saw this video I knew why that was happening.
Truly a man of culture.
I found that the thickness of aftermarket pads changed the sound stage of the headphones a little too much so had to go back to original pads.
You made my decision for me, thank you for treating my wallet right :D luv you man you're literally the first person i go to for reviews :D

m50(x) are like the SAO of headphones.
TheMagicToaster There are WAYYYYY more options in that price range that are closed back and sound good.

Yeah I bought that first pair of M50's with MY MONEY to review and act as the first give-a-way on /r/zeos. My disappoint was real.
ya thats me ;D
I just bought these based on your recommendation. I love them, good quality and good sound stage. My son loves to game with them so I bought him a pair too. However, comfort is an issue. I want to get HM5 pads, do you recommend HM5 pads? If so, which ones? The pleather or valor? Thanks in advance!
Pleather will keep the sound signature. The velour will lose some bass
(I haven't purchased the M40x's yet and am not sure if I will, so keep that in mind)
Update: I bought the M40Xs and have had them for over nine months now, and they are AMAZING!
I would like to try the straight pleather hm5s.
isn't the point of using angled pads because the headphone doesn't swivel enough?
@@hirumi9 No, quite the opposite as the swivel isn't enough for countering the imbalanced pad, leading to pressure on the thicker side of the pad.
8:26 .... Tell me about your childhood ....
The MSR7s never got a zeos sound test, so the question is: Is it worth the extra $100 for the MSR7s vs M40X?
Would like to know as well!
yeah they were on a list on CNET for one of the best headphones in history (MSR7)... they are quite good
Vighnesh Ramesh CNET is bullshit
i saw an msr7 review tho..
I also liked M40Xs more than M50Xs... :)
I have the M30X hooked up to my PC though, and I must say that the Brainwavz velours are a perfect fit for them.
honestly that asymetrical pads are just making me uncomfortable even just by looking at it.
Thank you for this recommended setup - these cans + pads + wire. I just received them and am very happy. Excellent sound, very comfortable and when I add my DAC a really pleasurable submersion.
@michael wittmann supposedly it improves the sound.
If the driver is angled then what extra benefit do you get from angled pads?

Think its helpful having the angled earpads? The driver is already angled. Seems like it would direct the audio in the wrong direction unless you just need the space for wide ears.

For gaming, video editing & producing, which one would you suggest, the M40x or the SHP9500?
quick question : which one should I get for gaming and everything the M40 or the SHP9500?HELP!!
Sony MDR 7506 or this?
What's the difference? I've been using the MDR-7506 for closed, portable headphones (great, realistic low end).

Reviewers really should mention that the M40xs and M50xs eventually break at the hinge for no apparent reason and become unwearable.

Any headband mods to help make my peaky head a bit more comfortable? I put that knit wrap on it, but hasn't helped a bunch.
I never disliked the headband. The clamp and bigger pads sort of hold it up without much need on the headband.
Hmmm.. perhaps I just have a peakier head. Thanks for the reply!
Headband is rather uncomfortable for me too. I did mod on a cheap Sennheiser HD600/650 headband foam though. Made it much more comfortable for me.
DT 770 or M40x?
I have the same question...
Softer pads or detachable cable, Tank metal build or foldable plastics. I think what you prioritize more will determine if you are into DT770 or M40x

Z Reviews Thanks!
This is by far the most accurate and honest description of the M40X.
Also purchase brainwavz pads they actually have which will also fit my hyperx and m40x so i can experiment a bit more ,
maybe buy cheap FiiO amp/dac in the future ,heard they are really good for the price, which one would u recommend more around 100€ Fiio q1 2(100€) or...
Audio Technica ATH-M40x or Sennheiser HD 598 Cs Closed Back Headphone?
Audio technica.
oh maaaaaaaaan, I should found your channel before I bought my m50´s
just got the pads. major difference. uncomfortable with original pads. also improved sound. you are the man. I continue to trust your judgement. thank you. keep up the good work.
Martin Jimenez same...so good with the HM5 pads.
