Did the same to mine last year after years of use, good as new! Best headphone I’ve ever owned! The headband zip faces upwards on mine, so that the none zip side touches your head FYI... obviously it’ll fit both ways, but it does makes sense! New pads made all the difference too, hadn’t realised how crushed the old ones had got in my Peli/Bag 👍

Just FYI, I got the brainwaves pads, and while they are MUCH more comfortable, it totally kills the low end. I ended up enjoying the sound of my M40x's more than my M50x's and I was super puzzled. I then realized the M40 drivers were WAY closer to my ears, like Audio-Technica designed them to be. I switched back to the stock ear pads, and it sounds so, so much better. Possibly just my opinion, but these headphones are designed to work optimally exactly how they come stock.
Trust me, distance of ears to drivers doesn't affect the bass at all. It's the Brainwavz pads. I had those and original pads (both included by seller) when I bought my M50x used. Compared with pads I have since purchased (three in total) they lack bass, other pads don't sacrifice the bass.
I tried Wicked Cushions pads and the bass is strong. I had to cut out the thick foam mesh because it was muffling the mids and highs.
Some detail is lost since the ears are farther apart from drivers, but the bass is unaffected. They are comfy too.
In the meantime, I found the best pads - genuine leather Bass Plus Cushion pads sold by wang_yifei. I can't tell where because TH-cam deletes my comment when I tell the website. But it starts with an e, ends in y and has a capital B. These pads are thin enough so that the sound is narrowly close to original pads (the sound is *that* good with those pads), they cup your ears and they are comfortable, not to mention it's advertised as real leather - they are soft to the touch, stretch easily and don't smell like chemicals or have a "plasticky" feeling.

DOPE! I’ll probably be using my ATH-M50Xs till I drop! 😆 Btw I have the bluetooth version and they make really good headphones for casual listening and have KILLER battery life! They work exactly the same as the OGs when plugged in with the cable, and they also have a regular 3.5mm jack on the headphones instead of the smaller 2.5mm jack on the OGs. Makes it easy to swap out the cable with any cable you want! 👌🏽

Great video Henny! I think every person should replace the stock pads with Brainwaves pads. I use the Brainwaves Prostock Perforated Leather pads on my M50X and it makes the headphones so much more comfortable and airy without changing the sound!

I used the spare pair of muffs from my HyperX cloud alphas. They let some sound out. But beats paying $40 for the official Pair

Hi, I got two of this headphone in 2019 and 2020. The 2019 one I use it 24/7, and it's still in pretty good condition. But the one I got in 2020, the power switch becomes loose, which caused my 2020 headphone keep turning on, connect, off and on again. Do you have similar issue?
Does it affect the sound quality!!? The third party earcups are bigger right so no changes to the audio quality?
I have the M40x pair. How do the 50x versions compare sound wise? I’m having to use my headphones right now for making beats and can’t use my monitors.

I have an older pair of Bose that the ear pads & the inner screens disintegrated. I put socks over them for now.

I tried the brain wavez ear cups but the sound is very different compared to the sound that you get with audio Technica and I just didn't like it

I have an old pair of ATH-M50s (without the X; the cord doesn't plug into the headphones, but is soldered in permanently). Like yours, the ear pads and overhead pads are falling apart. Is the new generation of the ATH-M50X's better enough to justify getting a new pair instead of restoring the old ones?
yes. totally worth the upgrade. keep in mind that the sound characteristics of headphones will change after using thicker earpads.
M50x came out in 2014. I wonder how's yours 10 years old.

It's the quality of the sound the same i look at other brands a year or two ago...Amazon reviewers was saying you lose the quality of sound..I await your thoughts.
You do... it’s not that you’re losing decibels... but the replacement pads are thicker .. so if you want the same sound as “ out of the box” you’ll have to squeeze the headphones a little bit on your ears .... it’s a distance thing... not a sonic thing
Good cans, but I actually prefer the cheaper 40X. I’ve owned the 50x, but found them a little bottom heavy. The 40x is just more neutral and balanced to my ears.

Zak, I bought them then returned them. For me, having airpods for everything BT and these for all my critical audio needs, it’s the best duo for me. The mic on the BT version wasn’t good at all.

Mic quality on my BT2s are great and sound quality is the same.

I’d go with the ATH if you have Bluetooth headphones or airpods already, if not the Aonics are great for both. Especially since they just dropped the price 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I recently purchased a new headset (ATH-M50xBT) and noticed that it has a p65 (Proposition 65 Cancer and Reproductive harm) warning on the back of the box. I looked at several other Audio Technica headsets and many of them seemed to carry this warning. Is anyone familiar with this warning or why it would be listed on so many of the AT products? Should I send mine back? I got it at B&H. This warning label is located in the back of the box. Also did your box come with a plastic cover for the headphone box? Mine didn’t! Just a box
