I do love the sound of a Detroit Diesel ! Back when I was a boy, I'd keep my room windows open on a quiet summer night and lay there quietly drifting off to sleep listening to the trucks gear down to make it up the hill on Hwy. 41 To the North of Springfield. Usually about 5 or 6 gear downs. I miss those days and that sound

Dane Scott---- Thanks for featuring and honoring 2 members of the Northeast Ohio ATHS chapter. Their matching Crackerboxes are a hit at many local shows, as they're oddities in many shows that seem to draw a gaggle of "large Cars" . Bob's award is special because he survived over 50 years wrenching on many makes and models of trucks.......and engines, but is our local "go to" guy for Detroits. Herm Miller's truck is a beautiful tribute to the late Herman Miller, and Mom Rachael is cool riding with her sons.

Bob worked on my dads 66 cracker box, his had a 6-71 with a 5 speed trans and a 2 speed rear end. Dads was also bought new from the same dealership. I grew up and lived within a few miles from Bobs place up until a few years ago. Dad always said no one could set the rack and tune a Detroit better than Bob. Thanks for the video!
The Army used Detroit diesels in their tanks and armored personnel carriers.
The M-60 tank used a 12v71 and the M113 personnel carriers used 8v71 , I believe, if memory serves me correctly.
Those engines were perfect for those jobs, because they didn't require a warm-up period- you could cold start and go full throttle, even in freezing conditions.
The first tractor trailer I drove had a 6-71, and that was 34 years ago. My ears are still ringing!

I drove one of those crackerboxes for a few years back in the early 80s. Ran NJ pulling a 42 ft trailer. Same year as these 2 trucks. 671 inline 6 238 hp. Couldn't pry the smile off my face back then

Growing up at a country store out from Tifton, Colonial Stores had a distribution center in Thomasville, and I would see these trucks many times a day pass by. Colonial had a fleet of them.

I miss riding bobs (my grandfathers) craker box with him and going to shows, i did that with him since i was little and polished for the shows to, he was taken to early from me and my family and his friends but im just glad that he was able to show his prize joy to the world other than his model t's ❤

I remember seeing Crackerboxes used by UPS on I-70 in Ohio in the early to mid 1980s. I was young and didn't know that they were Crackerboxes because they were daycabs and UPS debadged most of their trucks. But I knew what a Crackerbox was from having seen Benji and Moose on the TV show Movin' On. I remembered the distinctive "A" framing above their front bumper , and later in life realized what they were.
UPS was still running White 5000s at that time as well, another truck I wouldn't identify until later in life!

A GMC Crackerbox was the first truck I ever drove, just like the red one. learned how to drive a truck with it. In 1975 fresh out of high school a neighbor hired me to help him truck cross country with him I didn’t even have a CDL…called a chauffeurs license back then…. After about six months he said well I guess you ought to get a license and I did. Thought I had something back then hauling freight with that 318 Detroit lol. I went on to truck for a living from 1975 to 2017 but with some big Peterbilts and Catapillars. The good old days of trucking are long gone now.

yes two wonderful cracker boxes....the blue sure is a pretty paint scheme, and of course the carpet interior is the "best looking" interior I have ever seen in one. congrats. Keep them rolling boys....

My ex trucking part- ner's dad worked for a company from New Brunswick,N.J. Smith & Solomon Trucking. They ran a lot of crackerboxes, non sleeper that had derated I-6 71's. From an old GMC brochure when I had collected info from many man- ufacturers, there was a contractor in Michigan that ran cracker boxes with 12V-71's, super size earth mover style single tires on the drivers and the triple axles on both trailers. It looked quite strange with the regular truck tires on the steering axle and the earth- mover style on the drive axles. The cab was non sleeper & the V-12 protruded out the back of the cab.
I can only imagine it musta looked AND sounded like a monster! Thanks for watching 😬
The first company I drove for in the early 70s had a bunch of old cracker box day cabs that were old road trucks from Norwalk truck line -they had over a million miles-no power steering and no air seat -after 12 hours in one of those you were beat

I started out driving various cabover trucks, like Internationals and Freightliners, and they all had air seats, air ride suspension and air ride cabs, and those would still give you a good beating!
Can't imagine what it was like before the 80's!

If your Uncle had put a lot of wood inside the cab for woodgrain look. I remember talking to him about and admiring his truck at a truck stop in the early 90's. Very nice man to talk to. Loved his ole truck.

I absolutely love this video. I remember seeing the cracker boxes when I was a kid....not over the road, but shuttling trailer pups off of railroad flat cars and to various nearby industries in the downtown LA area in the late 60's and very early 70's

SO COOL the old trucks are. I was 8 years old when these were new. I remember, as a kid, seeing them everywhere on the highways hauling stuff. Actually, they kinda freaked me out. This was a really cool video the GMC cracker boxes and Emeryville were two interesting looking coes for their time neat that the blue one originally came from Zelienople Pa I use to drive for a company out of Zelienople!

When I was a kid in the mid-60s, my dad drove a "crackerbox" (at the time, he called it a "slab cab Jimmy") for a while, hauling lumber out of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, for an outfit called Fleron Lumber. I remember a few trips with him down into Michigan. Man, was it loud in that cab! Thanks for bringing back some old memories for me.

O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸 I’m getting around to this video. I had not seen it before…shocking! I love hearing the stories & the action as well! WOW! Herman had his at your show & it was so good to see it in person. It’s one sharp rig! I saw a Crackerbox at a show years ago. He was looking for a parts truck. I saw one in a field when I was out one day & checked it out. I made an offer on it so the owner wouldn’t junk it. He delayed a bit & then called me a week later. I had a friend tow it to my house. When I told him I had he decided that he didn’t want it. I kept it for quite some time, but never attempted to start it. My brother saw pics of it & wanted it, so I gave it to him. He was so thrilled to get it. It was a project that we were gonna do together. We never got that far on our brother projects. I love the way those trucks looked & sounded. They are so cool & unique in so many ways. I have yet to ride in one. Thanks for sharing! Jaw dropping AWESOME! 🥰🥰✌️

The good thing is that I have at least one of my boys that is wanting & willing to work on these truck projects with me. I have such good memories of my brother & his legacy will live on through me as I work on my trucks with my boys. My brother was quite special & unique to me! Anyone who knows me surely knows how I feel about my family. Who knows what trucks I will add to my collection. Time will tell! Blessings!🥰😎✌️
Had 2 friends that , 1 owned the cracker box and the other was a great welder/metal worker. They made a double wide cracker box! It was as cool as cool can get! Would love to find it again!

This is the first time to see one of your videos. I just subscribed. I was born in Youngstown in 1950. My Dad hauled steel out of Youngstown back in the 1940's Back in the early 1970's I drove a 1968 Pete COE with an 8v71 engine and 4x4 trannies hauling produce from California to the old Chicago Produce Market. Top speed was 105 mph.

@@topturretgunner 10-4 on the "screaming in my ears". Vietnam started my tinnitus, and then the Detroit Diesels finished it off for me. All I hear now is ring, ring, ring. It is maddening. But a person can get used to just about anything if forced to.
@@oldtrucker672 My friend as a former President once said. “I feel your pain.” Like you I’ve had tinnitus most of my life. Listening to a 318 DD and then the cab noise and the high pitched turbo charger whistle finished the job. I’ve got 35 and 40% hearing loss. You weren’t artillery over there were you?

Hey Dane i aways enjoy you're videos. In 1972 i was 12 yrs old my dad had a 64 or 65 dark blue crackerbox wasn't the cadilac of the interstate i would always lust after the KW's and Petes but something about tht old work horse that appealed to me that has stuck with me to this day. A few years later he bought a used KW. I have only seen one dark blue crackerbox that reminds me of my dads it was online except that it had no sleeper. to me crackerboxes have such a devious look about them that is so boss. Dane thank you sir keep the coffee perkulatng!

Those first 12 seconds had beautiful music coming from those trucks. Love almost all the old Detroits especially a 6.71 straight 6. And almost right when you started talking I could see that it was a 1971-73 Cadillac you were driving (I've had several in the past so that was an easy one to notice) The hood confirmed it.
I love the stories behind these trucks and it reminds us when the USA was a mighty industrial power, devoid of things made in China and employed millions of people and kept the middle class intact.

Hey....I see a Dodge cab and cowl....in the back there....another cool truck. I remember when I apprenticed at the Kenworth dealer back in the '70's and we had a customer with a crackerbox with the V12 gas motor in it, not a diesel....what a cool unit!

Great video, beautiful trucks with a glorious sound. Thank you. I have an old Chevy Titan that I use for a grain truck every fall. Wish it had an 8V71 in it. I have a small cam 350 Cummins. Good power but nowhere near the cool factor of the old Screamin Demons.
The only thing I didn't understand was the owners comment on the blue truck that his dad had changed the hubs over so he could switch from 22" to 20" rims. I thought 22" and 20" used the same rim and the only time you would have to switch hubs would be for 24" rubber. But I'm no expert on this stuff so probably just me.

I think you would have to change the hubs, because every size wheel needed to fit the spokes, with disk wheels, you can used any size wheel, from 20 inch to 24 inch.
If you use 22, or 24 with the spokes, you can use the 22.5 and the 24.5 with the 22, 24 tube types. There's not much difference and they can fit from 22 to 22.5 with no problem personally, I prefer the disk wheels, look better

Dane. , I stand corrected on the cracker box and UPS I researched an old high school buddy on Facebook who drove for UPS back in the mid 70s, I see that what he was driving back then was the short cabover Mack I looked up the cracker boxes as well and see that GMC was produced from 59 thru 1968 so I had them mixed up , memories aren’t as clear as they once were but I do remember seeing him in the brown cabover, looks like from his Facebook page he spent a lot of time on the road but he’s older now just like me , I’m guessing that we (you & I) are the same age. 63. Why else would we like everything old lol thanks for the quick education. J

This was a blast to watch. Years ago I drove for a United Van Lines agent, and we didn't have any crackerboxes, but we had two White Freightliner cabovers (a '73 and a '74) that both had 8V71s. God, they were fun to drive, and they sounded just like these Jimmys. They were the fastest tractors in our local fleet, and I think the only guys that could outrun them were the OTR drivers with 430 Detroits or 425 Cats.

A bus company I worked for in the early 70’s had a US Mail contract between Reno and Las Vegas. They had 4 single drive axle crackerboxes pulling a single 26’ trailer full of mail. As the Assistant Operations Supt I had to driver the route if one of the truck drivers got sick. They were a hardy bunch of drivers. The only time they called in sick was twice a year when the new Sears and Montgomery Wards catalogs were mailed. Each mail bag weighed 70 lbs with those catalogs 😆
