For what it's worth, Toyota in interviews with several automotive journalists have mentioned that the new Crown is partly aimed for those who don't want to give up the ease of access into/out of an SUV, but also don't want to be either too high up (SUV) or too low down (traditional sedan/hatchback). Basically, targeting the new family and the elderly. The Crown's higher height makes it much easier to get into/out of, while also riding a bit higher than other sedans/hatchbacks, but not as high up as the RAV4, 4Runner, Sequoia, or Land Cruiser. Straight from one of the journalism sites: "According to chief engineer Sarada, the main reason for raising the Crown’s ride height was to simplify ingress and egress-getting in and out of the car. He and Toyota recognized that the Crown’s target audience in Japan is a bit older and therefore wanted to make it so they neither have to drop down into it like in a typical sedan nor climb up into it like in a crossover. So they settled on an unusual but surprisingly comfortable ride height." Some early reviews also mentioned that it'd be easy to work in a child's safety seat and restraint system given that one's not partially climbing into the cabin (SUV) or wiggling their way in (sedan), making it potentially ideal for new families who'd later upgrade to a proper SUV when the kids are older and its time to take them out to extracurricular activities.

For the last 20 years or so to us in Asia, the Crown meant the largest rear drive and top of the range Toyota you can get. A lot of that time would share the platform with the Lexus LS sedans. Or in Hong Kong or Singapore, a diesel taxi which I think is still being sold today. This most recent one however is strange to us as the styling completely breaks with the past 20 years. Not sure what to make of it. May as well purchase a Lexus since at least is more consistent in its styling. Love the great intro. Keep up the great vids.
@@air-headedaviator1805 The Lexus GS 350 RWD and AWD was essentially the Crown with different styling and a little more luxury. It was the BMW 5 Series/Benz E Class/Audi A6 competitor. I have a 2013 with the 3.5L V6 with 306 hp. I LOVE it. Smooth and luxurious but with plenty of power. If you are in North America you can get them used for a great price.
Very well said. This is not a crown. It's a toad looking freak. Can't believe Toyota would do this. Unless it's trying to kill the crown. If it ain't long, sleek, commanding in its stature rear wheel drive with a 4l V8 forget about it.
In Yakutsk, Russia we have 80% of the cars imported from Japan, we are used to the Crown and many other models unfortunately you cannot find in North America. Thanks for your nice videos!
The Toyota crowns in my country have upto 350 hp from 2.5l v6 engine and somewhat comfortable..i like them a lot plus they have crowns everywhere from the floormats to the hood
I drive a 2006 Lexus LS. From your description it seems that Toyota has chosen to emphasise the things I love about the LS in the Crown. Comfortable seats, quiet cabin and a plush ride. There are a whole bunch of us who are not interested in a sedan that's a sports car. I hope this car does well.
To us car enthusiast the name Toyota Crown is like that family member, friend that gives you nostalgic memories, realability of always being there, tells you a good funny wholesome story and a warm hug, although i never own one but other Toyotas like ae86s, GT86, Soarers i always Respected the Crown from Humble taxis in asia, Yakuza Majestas we saw by Rappongi Hills to Vip prime minister Crowns. Its the mystic that gets me. Thank you, Dear Crown.
I suspect this is the low end Crown, looking it up it's a transverse layout. The last gen Crown was built on the GA-L platform which is the same as Lexus LS. So kind of confused going from the LS to a Camry...
I really wish they brought over the Crown sedan to the US. I very much enjoy my series 220 crown athlete sedan and it would have been amazing to get a crown as well when I am in the US again
This video was insane. That was the most Top Gear (when Top Gear was actually Top Gear) video you have ever done. Well done! Man, you guys need to be on TV.
Very well done with the video. As far as the car goes, I like it. Also, I had no idea Toyota "crowned" so many of their vehicles. Actually, just sitting back and realizing Toyota makes so many different types of vehicles and all with consistent quality is just mind-blowing. Wow! Keep up the great work. This, with its 2-tone paint, might be the perfect Crown to adorn my garage :)
Brilliant show! I lived in Japan for a few years in the early 90s and always assumed the Crown was either a taxi or, at times, a luxurious 4-door saloon car. I’d no idea there were this many iterations!
Great vid as always, love the fact that you measured 0-60 on camera. Would love to see your results, as well as quarter mile, on all vehicles you test.
I've never clicked on a video so quickly. Finally glad to see you guys uncover the illustrious history of the Crown name. It's always been something of an all-rounder, in the same way the Panther trio has been for America and Canada, and the Ford Falcon is for Aus and NZ. Fun fact: the Hong Kong taxi replica at the beginning was at the first-ever Throttle House car meet. Though it'a not the LWB version, it's still a painstakingly accurate recreation, complete with bead covers on the front seat and a glass bottle of Vitasoy. The car is something of a cultural touchstone for homesick HKers. It's been featured in numerous news articles, and was also a prop in Pacific Rim.
There is one very famous catch-phrase that every Japanese people knows. That is "Itsuka Wa Crown." That means "One day I will definitely own Crown." So Toyota Crown is a kind of symbol, a goal for a successful man. In fact in these 60 years Crown became quite affordable, but Crown is still the ICON for all Japanese hard-working man. Cheers!
What the current generation now doesn't know is the crown is the top luxury brand in Toyota before lexus were born. People in the 80s & 90s who got a crown are top rich families. Now crown started to target mid luxury, I like it😍
This is definitely one of my videos you guys have ever done! I agree with others… the production definitely looks. For real though… Awesome job, gents!

My mom owns a 12th gen Crown with a 2.5 liter naturally aspirate V6. It is indeed a very comfortable vehicle to drive and to ride. In less crowded traffic and in the hand of a skillful driver, the car can accelerate and decelerate without the passengers noticing anything.
Gentlemen, At 9:07 you include a photo of the entire Crown lineup which made its debut this summer at Toyota Global HQ. We see an elegant sedan in grey, a good looking CUV in ruby red and my favourite, a gleaming gold Estate. There are also Japanese rumours of a very handsome Crown coupe in the works. Somehow, we were sent CrossTour Volume ii. There are so many positive attributes to this new Crown but they have to send us the BEST ones to have any chance to succeed in our market. One last thing, there is absolutely no point in increasing seat height to a more accommodating level if you are going to reduce headroom at the same time!! That's right, this premium Toyota Clown® actually has less headroom than a Camry. 🤨
@@rightlanehog3151 I think that gold thing is the most suv of the bunch. If you’re ever wondering about a vehicle’s intentions just look at the amount of plastic cladding along the sides and wheel arches.
The Crown Majesta was the luxury version from 2 generation ago, there was another sporty version to go along with it, the Crown Athlete. Apparently, Toyota themselves thought it was confusing and replace both of them with the Crown RS, which was the last generation before this Crown "Crossover". What really grinds my gear is that with that name, it should've had a hatch like an X6, instead of a trunk
Your intro alone is worth 2 likes. Your teams combo of clever writing, solid video quality and engaging reviews should make you guys the next kings of auto reviews
Fantastic video. Toyota likes the name "Crown." One thing I noticed is the Japanese interior seemed nicer. It had no glossy areas where the US version had gloss and that two-tone treatment made the interior pop. The exterior two-tone treatment isn't my cup of tea. Straight Pipes found it entertaining around turns, but with the traction control on, not off. Overall, the sense of smoothness and refinement is this car's strength and that may woo a good amount of people into purchasing it. Also, I think the higher ride height yet still a sedan may appeal to a decent percentage of car buyers.
Average American car buyers are relatively poorer. Even the Camry in other markets can rival BMW's and Mercedes' because of its more luxurious interior.
@@hassan_codes Relatively poorer than who? Based on stats, the average American household is fairly well off compared to most parts of the EU. I just assume that the average American car buyer likes chitzy stuff - I mean you look at some of their domestic cars and they are covered with ugly chrome, sharp angles and ridiculous looking lighting systems (e.g. Cadillac) - presumably the result of market research that shows US buyers think that kind of stuff looks good.
@@hassan_codes the reason Toyota can rival bmw in other markets is due to the fact bmw and benz produce lower quality interiors to be price good. In jamaica. We have 2020 bmw 518 with cloth interior or 2020 mercedes c180. If you buy a toyota markx its more luxury. So market is the key word my friend.
From the banter to the incredible historical coverage, this was a treat. The production quality and videography just seem to be getting better and better. I do have to say, as charming as the Crown and its messy history are, it really doesn't make any sense in the North American market. Adding the luxury options to differentiate it from a Camry puts it solidly in Lexus ES price territory, but the Crown brand has no pull in America. Why would anyone get this over a Lexus ES? Frankly, the ES looks more stately and elegant, and it has a splendid sound system.
Just found the channel. Friends purchased a 1971 Toyota Crown Custom Station Wagon that I got to drive. Transmission needed another gear but the ride was fantastic.
Well in my country, i have imported a 2004 crown athlete, which is the sporty version of the crown and it has a 1jz engine and it is super comfy, probably the best car of its era, I also have a 2005 majesta and i would argue that it is more luxurious than the S class of its time, truly amazing cars, don’t know why japan didn’t bring them to the world earlier
Over here in NZ there everywhere but yet people equally like what we call a nissan "skyline" 250gt and 350gt/ infiniti g35 and g37 sedan models tho we can now starting to get the infiniti q50s which I just got one a few months ago and it's a lot quicker and looks nicer than this new crown tho will be interesting when I get to drive one to compare 🤔

Truly one of the Crowns ever made
why i can't see review about toyota crown sport, sedan and estate 2022 in TH-cam than this car??
The Crown taxi they used was a Crown Comfort. It was quite roomy inside and used a solid rear axle.
Those are quite good
Comfortable luxury taxi tbh
it was a gas engine and made maybe 90hp, but on a rainy day and a roundabout you can have fun with it
You guys are THE BEST - you deserve a Crown or a Corona..
Man RWD? Imagine if this Crown was that. I think it would have won over more
That would’ve been great if it was RWD with AWD as an option.
@@atmartens The Lexus GS 350 is essentially the Crown. It came in both RWD and AWD
Here in the Philippines, these were the absolute pinnacle of Japanese automotive luxury for us in the 80s and 90s. Brilliant cars.
One of the most informative openings I’ve ever seen. Great job!
To truly give it the crown touch, the front emblem shouldve been the crown like the ones from Japan have
Especially the crown rs and athletic 350
Cars in our country come from Japan thus we also get the ones with the crown emblen
We still have 91 crown with 1jz and its great car still runs perfectly
The Toyota crowns in my country have upto 350 hp from 2.5l v6 engine and somewhat comfortable..i like them a lot plus they have crowns everywhere from the floormats to the hood
I drive a 2006 Lexus LS. From your description it seems that Toyota has chosen to emphasise the things I love about the LS in the Crown. Comfortable seats, quiet cabin and a plush ride. There are a whole bunch of us who are not interested in a sedan that's a sports car. I hope this car does well.
Isn't it just the Avalon replacement?
@@NutritionPolice Pricing makes sense. Still way less than an LS sedan.
Lexus LS is essentially the American version of the Toyota Crown Athlete.
Is this better than the ES?
I had an LS 430 Ultra Luxury and loved it. If this is anything close for a fraction of the price, I am in.
I own a GRS184 2006 Crown Athlete, super happy with the car, I love it to bits. Great video!
Thank you, Dear Crown.
ah the Majesta with the chicken badge and crazy limousine back seats.
The first 4 mins alone made it worth a watch👌
I thought the first 4 minutes were the most painful TH bit ever. Don't get me wrong I love these guys.
@@chrls705 your comment has a same vibe as this toyota crown on me… if you know what I mean😂
This is one of my favorite TH intros! I’ve watched it 3-4 times now. 😅
The production on this video was incredible. Thank you so much for the work you do!
Watching Thomas & James slowly go insane over Toyota’s ridiculous names is something I didn’t know I needed
KUDOS! To you and the production team, fkn epic episode shame most people won't appreciate all the effort.
I love the history intro on this. Great narration and editing boys. Best part of this episode and this car.
This really is THE Toyota ever made. Incred
I suspect this is the low end Crown, looking it up it's a transverse layout. The last gen Crown was built on the GA-L platform which is the same as Lexus LS. So kind of confused going from the LS to a Camry...
The crowniest crown to ever crown.
I really wish they brought over the Crown sedan to the US. I very much enjoy my series 220 crown athlete sedan and it would have been amazing to get a crown as well when I am in the US again
You guys are the car review channel ever
Wow. Gosh. Thanks.
@@ThrottleHouse please do a review on the Venza and compare it to this
@@ThrottleHouse u guys the best out of all TH-cam car review channels
This video was insane. That was the most Top Gear (when Top Gear was actually Top Gear) video you have ever done. Well done! Man, you guys need to be on TV.
The black and white color on that platinum edition is nice, I may consider buying one in a few years fr
One of their goals is to offer pretty much every option out there to people
Brilliant show! I lived in Japan for a few years in the early 90s and always assumed the Crown was either a taxi or, at times, a luxurious 4-door saloon car. I’d no idea there were this many iterations!
Here in Jamaica🇯🇲 the Toyota Crown and Toyota Mark x are very famous. Even been tuned and adding turbos for more power
The entire beginning of this video had me cracking up. So good you guys, thanks for the amazing content!
You guys are right Crown badge "it really feels expensive" that is well refined and engineered car.
The conversational transitions to the exterior looks section and then the interior section were really nice
Ya’ll are so good! So many laugh out loud moments just within the first 5 min! And the production quality is tops!
Cheers!
Looks like you guys had a good time "Crowning around".
😂😂😂
This is definitely one of the videos these guys have done I agree. 🤣😂
But can't believe someone finds this cars appealing. I'd like it as a Hearse though.
OMG THIS INTRO IS ABOVE AND BEYOND!!! y'all actually found the HK taxi that a hker "built" in Canada!!! That was soo cool!!! The research and introduction is so good as always!! What a great, unique car review!! Love it!!
this is exaclty the type of car i would ever own, big wheels sleek and sporty
loved the way you guys introduced the crown and narrated its history :D
Intro piece about what is a crown was killer, Top Gear material. Well done boys.
I love the editing on this video!
Quality of production + information + fun factor
Really well done guys, The whole history recap segment was very nicely done!
What a joke on the head room lol. A Crown Coup would be awesome. Pedestrian coupes are among my favorite 👀
@@air-headedaviator1805 Japan's Best Car magazine did a story about the coupe a couple of months ago.
Blame your neighbours for buying so many suvs over the past couple decades.
@@MachineCreature As Canadians, we are too often forced into CUVs and SUVs because automakers won't offer us wagons anymore.
Yuck. Hatchbacks are ugly as shit
They should've kept the sedan bodystyle or make a sedan version of this crown
@@Cvxnz It exists overseas
True
@@Cvxnz The Crown sedan, sport (SUV) and estate are scheduled to launch this year (alongside/the same generation as this Crown crossover).
...then you don't get the TWO-TONE PAINT....but, do you want that! Both of you delivered oscar worthy performances with these two lines.
Can't believe I almost didn't watch this one. Lol you guys keep getting better and better
You guys have really perfected youtube car reviews. Strong top gear vibes.
I actually like the looks for the side, the front isn't bad either! Not sure about the two tone paint, would love to see it in person! Thanks guys!
@@hassan_codes ok
I'm a bit surprised, but I am seeing these everywhere.
Having a rough week. You guys always make it better. Thank you
From the banter to the incredible historical coverage, this was a treat.
I love how simply and entertainingly explained. I am not a car person but I need to learn a lot
Of all the Toyota that have ever Toyota, this is definitely the Toyota.
Absolutely awesome intro! Thanks for the history lesson! Love it!
You two deserve a crown for that opening! 4 1/2 minutes of TH-cam educational TH-cam perfection
You forgot to mention a few of the coolest Crowns! In the 90's/early2000's there were some models that came with the 1JZ-GTE engine.
That was the hearse he referred to haha

Well in my country, i have imported a 2004 crown athlete, which is the sporty version of the crown and it has a 1jz engine and it is super comfy, probably the best car of its era, I also have a 2005 majesta and i would argue that it is more luxurious than the S class of its time, truly amazing cars, don’t know why japan didn’t bring them to the world earlier
