I purchased a Toyota Crown Limited in April of this year. Having driven it for 6 months, I can confidently say that I love this car. It drives so smooth, it's comfortable, very fuel efficient (compared to my previous ford edge sport), and it is technologically advanced. I am consistently getting 46-52 mpg on my daily drives to and from school, which is fantastic. I live about 45 minutes from the university, so I needed an economical car to cut down on gas expenses. The crown has certainly done that for me. The real selling point for me though was the overall design of the car. It's stunning, bold, and so unique. I opted for the heavy metal color which in my opinion is one of the best looking silver colors I've seen on a car. It's dynamic and multifaceted in different lighting conditions. I know this car is being marketed for an older demographic, which I do not understand to be honest. Being 25, I think the overall design of the car is appealing to young adults. At least it definitely was for me when I was looking for a new car to purchase. I test drove many Hondas, Hyundais, Kias, and even a Tesla. But none of them compared to the feeling when I arrived at the toyota dealership and saw the crown for the first time. It instantly caught my eye. All in all, I am very happy with my purchase. This is my first ever Toyota and I am very satisfied with the brand thus far.
Wow... 25 years old and already buying a $50k car. While I'm 35 and homeless in my shitty Ford Focus full of mechanical problems that was mostly paid for by my dad and his spouse because I had too many problems in life and couldn't even pay for it anymore (was purchased under their name, not mine)... I hate my life.
It looks awesome. has a big presence on the road. The Crown is back! Toyota quality and reliability🤩 Made in Japan!!!! Crown Platinum is the way to go. great features.
My mom just purchased one of these to replace a 14 year old G37. The extra room and ease of use were selling points but she didn't want a reduction in power. She is 75 years old and this is perfect.

I purchased a Limited a week ago. I like the looks of this vehicle, it looks like nothing else out there, and I like that. It is attaining above EPA mileage estimates so far. The ride is very comfortable, and the inside of the cabin is very quiet. I am extremely happy with my Crown.
Hi Mr. Car care, I was wondering if you could answer the difference between the models? I live in Canada and the choices are crown XLE, crown XLE with limited package and the crown max. I am a senior in my 70’s and was thinking about a crown, the prices are very high, almost too high. My choice would be the XLE Limited, if I bought one, or a new Camry XlE hybrid. I now have a 2018 Camry XLE hybrid with 85000 km, just over 50,000 miles. I really enjoy watching your shows, enjoy that you tell it like it is. Looking forward to your comments, and ideas of best thing to do.
Ya thanks 4 letting us know from someone who actually purchased it and drove the vehicle! MY comment above as such, "Crown car used to be luxury sedan even high-ranking Japanese diplomats droved; glad it came back! USA
Saw this car in recent local news in LA . being stolen off a dealer lot and crashing through some metal gates without shuddering or losing a side mirror. The thief drove through two gates and went sailing down Santa Monica Blvd. First time I was impressed by this car
What a dummy for stealing this pile of 'technology' Pick something that will have some future value to it. This machine will be passed over like a cold hamburger.
I think it lost the side right mirror when it crashed through the gate when it went into the mainroad in front of the camera. But then again it’s made in Japan so I’m not too impressed. Still impressed though. Perhaps we all know on the inside that Toyota is going down the planned obsolescence route nowadays so much that we are impressed?
I like this car, and think it has great features. It was one of the new vehicles I considered, but the price imo is inflated. I ended up buying a Camry XSE AWD.
The other day I got 40mpg on the highway when driving home from work. I was astonished Mines a 2020 XSE v6 but even 4 years later I’ve yet to find a Toyota or Lexus that’s objectively better than the Camry. So far only the lc500 is better than the Camry
I personally love it. Absolutely loved the older Avalon, the ride and comfort was on a different level, even though I was in my early thirties and I could not understand why people thought it was for old folks. Went on a trip with some friends and they were amazed at how good it was. I cried when I heard it was being discontinued but this looks like an improvement. I definitely love this and hope to buy one. Thanks for your videos 💯
Not sure why you have multiple negatives about this car one it’s a Toyota it’s quality and reliability. Update, that everyone feels the same way about this car that you seem to be telling people not to buy. It’s a beautiful car that is attractive to multiple age ranges.
Wow, just found this channel as I shop for an upgrade to my 21 Honda Passport. Man, I love the content - this is how car channels should be! Ad looks go, I took one look at this car and fell in love. I am a 56 year old curmudgeon
After seeing this video, I’m resolved to enjoy my 2001 Prius that much more. You’ve said in the past to avoid the first generation Prius but I found mine from the original owner with a high voltage battery failure after 177k miles and 22 years of her ownership. Records show everything she’s done to maintain it and surprisingly it’s on its original brakes & rotors, original factory everything except the battery, as I’ve overhauled it with 38 cells from a 2022 battery. 403 miles driven on 9 gallons of fuel my first tank after overhauling the battery, I couldn’t be happier. It’s not pretty but it does the job.
I have owned my fair share of vehicles for all the wrong reasons through the years. I have found most vehicles to be uncomfortable to drive as I’m over 6’ tall or I wasn’t happy with them for some reason or another. Buy, be discontent, sell, repeat was my vehicle life. It was draining to my soul. I was critical and miserable. When I found this 2001 Prius for $750, I towed it away determined to find every possible reason why I appreciated it without criticism or pride involved. A car is a tool after all, like a rake or lawnmower. Why should a badge, seat material or external design matter? The more I have worked on it, the more I appreciate it for what it is - a building block of engineering that was the foundation for the modern hybrid. Even the newest 2024 Land Cruiser is being built using the same battery chemistry two decades later. My 2001 Prius is a classic that runs smoothly, is comfortable, is deathly quiet in electric mode for about 1.5 miles at a time and above all, I don’t have a car payment and my total expenses to drive and own it are below $100 a month. I’ve had car payments. I’ve been upside down on vehicle loans before. Never again as long as this thing gets me from A to B.
Wish you were near York Pennsylvania. You are one of the few honest car technicians. That's why I perform my own maintenance and repairs. It seems like everyone tries to rip you off.
Today I learned that the looks are objective and aluminum isn't metal. But seriously, as usual with your reviews I learned a lot more about a car that I already thought I knew a lot about. Thanks for the great content.
Okay! aluminum is a non-ferrous metal but still a metal, just as iron, steel, copper, nickel, silver, gold, and brass are metals. Get yourself a Lexus ES. The Crown is a Clown.
Well I drive a Toyota Sienna hybrid van commercially several hours a day. It’s amazing. These things idle for hours and then hours on the road at 75 mph with up to 5 guys in it. Thing gets 32.5 mpg average. Has plenty of power and AWD. I have seen some in the fleet with 227k miles on them and they drive like the new ones. They never break down. They go and go and mileage is amazing. I never liked hybrids but now I am very impressed. If these Crowns are anything like the Sienna vans I would like to have one. I bought a new Subaru Forester Wilderness and love it but the mileage is not good. Get like 18 to 20 mpg in the few miles I have been driving it. The big Toyota van gets double the gas mileage and that’s with a lot of idling and loaded up with all the passengers. It’s just amazing technology and the reliability is amazing as well.
Just got my Crown Plat 2 weeks ago & absolutely love it. I generally try to feather it for economy but when I've needed the power it's there instantly!
The WORST thing right off the bat is the 21 inch rims. I have a 2013 Venza with 20s and the ride is rough! I can feel every bump, and when I do, it's harsh. My old Highlander with 16s and even my 2002 Tacoma with 16s may have had a "floaty" ride, but they were comfortable to ride on any street.
The Crown is a Clown, better off with a Lexus. When your tires have less side wall, you do notice the difference in comfort and handling. Bigger isn't always better. Newer isn't necessarily better as there was a time when the old stuff was made with quality, and craftsmanship, to last. Today it's a consumable market of buys and throwaways as repairs and DIY is the pastime. Everywhere is a landfill or place of hazardous waste/materials. The ocean is the largest dumping ground, it killing whales and more. I have a Camry, did not like the Avalon and why would I like the Crown. Enjoy life, and get a vehicle that suits you well that won't break the bank. If you happen to buy a new vehicle and plan on keeping it for 5 to 6 plus years then get the 10-year VSA - warranty. You can call any dealership in the USA to get a Warranty Quote. Most times your place of purchase dealer/financial manager will quote you a price of more than $2,000 for a 10-year/125,000-mile $0 deductible warranty. Do not pay more than $2k for 10 yr/125K miles, so I recommend calling and shopping around for the best price. If you Do Not Intend to keep the vehicle beyond 5 or 6 years ...Do Not Buy A Warranty as the Manufacturer's Warranty for the most part will cover it. Manufacturer Warranties are most times better than any 3rd Party Warranty. Now if you live a few hundred miles away from the nearest authorized (for example Toyota) then maybe consider a 3rd Party Warranty.
Any wheels over 19" will provide a rough ride. 18" is the sweet spot for smooth riding tires and I don't mean cheap tires. Stick with Michelin Defender 2 or Continental Cross Contact LX Sport SSR.
@@journeyman291 That's not what the experts say, just saying. I like 19 and 18 inch wheels, I do not have a large SUV, so I don't need 30 inch rims. LOL 🤔
The direct injectors being on top of the valve cover do indeed create a hassle when it comes to removing the valve cover. I had to repair a leak from the valve cover on the B48 engine from BMW, and it required a lot of extra work, involving the injector seals and fuel rails, etc.
the average car could easily hit 200k miles before needing new injectors. I keep hearing bmw needing injectors fairly early in life (especially specific 2000s models). I would imagine toyota designed this knowing their quality will keep them from failing etc.
Ya? Just wait till you get the bill for the unnecessary Germanic idea that someone living in the Far East rice bowl called Japan came up with and authorized that brilliant idea. I can hear the cash register now/ or is that a debit machine? More unnecessary complication of parts and systems. Keep it simple stupid! That is why people buy Toyota vehicles. But not for much longer. Besides with up to two years wait for most Toyota products, who cares what they do? I know 5 friends who dumped their order and bought something else. Mazda or Subaru for instance. Honda is doing the same thing it seems. Going down the 'wrong road'. It isn't by accident. This is a 'plan'. it is the future. They have picked up a bad case of the German Measles in all their vehicles.
@@ItalianMetalHED Oh for sure, I do not deny Toyota's engineering prowess. My problem with BMW's B48 that I worked on was unrelated to the fuel injectors, but it was necessary to remove them in order to remove the valve cover, therefore adding more work.
@@vinhngo1894 my experience with my VR6 showed how over engineered these German cars are and electronically inferior as they age but otherwise make amazing motors!!
I just got this as upgrade from my 2008 Avalon 400k miles totally reliablecar. Waited for you to review this. And i hope to be as reliable as my old car.
Hi AMD, thank you for the wide-open honest review of the Crown and differences between the models drivetrain. I was so struck by the 0W-8 oil cost that I had to see how much the oil cost cut into savings in fuel. At nationwide average $3.87/gallon, the XLE or Limited would use 39.3 gallons less between 5000 mile oil changes or $152 less in fuel. The oil (0W-8) costing about $15/quart more (assuming 5 qts/change) is about $75 more expensive than very good Mobil1 0W-20 EP (that I use in wife’s minivan). So half of the fuel savings in XLE or Limited is lost to the oil cost! Thank you again for the excellent reviews!!
How about difference in insurance cost for hybrids? Annual registration fees? In Washington State Hybrid owners are hit with an extra $75 per year on tabs, EVs are not penalized despite the extra weight.
Thank you for the honest review. As a long time Toyota owner, (2010 Corolla; 2012 FJ Cruiser, both of which we still drive today) we were considering the Crown. However, as you accurately point out, a Lexus ES 350 retails for nearly the same price. At this point we prefer the Lexus..... if it is available.
@@richscott2483 I don't think so it's a clown. I got a new 2023 Crown Platinum and all I could say it's just amazing car/crossover plus it uses the regular fuel at all unlike Lexus it use higher grade fuel which is in the long run the crown saves more.
The powertrain is incredibly complicated. i would imagaine down the road when repairs are needed, they will be very expensive and in some cases hard to diagnose.
My uncle, who lived in Japan and was the president of a shipping company in Chiba, used to have a Crown as his company car. I remember riding in it back in the 60's and early 70's when I visited him and it was a really comfortable, luxury car. Perhaps, as you say, if Toyota is planning to introduce an entire line of cars under the "Crown" label, they plan on doing it to replace their Scion line that was discontinued? Only time will tell. Great, informative and detailed review.
Spot on about what happened to the Avalon and why buy the crown when you can get a Lexus ES for a similar price. Great quality as usual but if you’re going to go around 50k you’re in Lexus territory price wise
The Lexus ES 350 still sticks with the tried and true Toyota normally-aspirated V6 which is superior to this new hybrid-turbo complexity nightmare. That V6 engine is gonna be discontinued soon.
@@little123456788 I’ve owned a 2013 ES350 for 2 years, 2 years ago i sold that for my current 2002 ES300. Yes went back 2 generations because the 4th Gen is incredible Silky smooth V6’s. My current Smaller 3.0 gets slightly better mileage, I get 30 mpg highway with 93 octane Mobil. I have 178k miles and it drives like new, nothing is broke. I used to own an Avalon, now I own a ES 350, like it very much. I’m not impressed with this Crown. Thank you very much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you about the 2024 GX
AMD sure appreciate your videos. Especially, the longer ones where you take time to go over what needs to be discussed regardless of the length of the discussion. Keep up the good work... your viewers know that you put in lots of extra work and money in making these videos. It it keeps them coming back alone with new viewers. THANKS.
The hybrid drone is NOT due to the CVT. It is due to the Atkison Cycle enigine (long stroke). The Checy Vega had the same problem for the same reason, but the droney part wasn't constant, as the engine had an ordinary transmisssion. The reason peeps find it annoying in most hybrids is that when accelerating, the engine is held at the most efficient RPM for both acceleration and fuel economy. Alas, it is also the most droney RPM. It is held at that RPM as the CVT (silently) adjusts the "gear" ratio as the car goes faster. I have had 3 such cars. A 2007, and 2016 Prius and a 2017 Prius Prime. The drone doesn't bother me that much, as I know why it is happening and what it is doing. Saving me money at the pump. I just don't like to hear it blamed on the eCVT. Too many also equate it with the DAF CVT (rubber belts in a tiny car with a tiny engine) and later Subaru, and still later MANY others. Totally different animal! And MUCH better. I am sorry to see so many going back to (as the one reviewed does) to what Honda called the Integrated Motor Assist. Peeps like the feel of the MUCH less efficient shifts because they don't know any better. CVTs with artificial shift points (to make the unwashed happy) really make my blood boil!
i got one and im averaging 53.8mpg. ended up not going with the turbo. Not worried about the oil cost. My camaro at the dealership was $180 for an oil change.
Why do we have to label or categorize the car? Why not just celebrate the uniqueness, and enjoy it? To me, this car sounds like a value proposition. I am seriously considering it. Love your content.
That is great insight about the 0w-8 oil because nobody else tells you about that. As someone who has a hybrid with the 0w-16 looking to switch to a Grand Highlander or Highlander in a few years, that is good to know. If the oil changes still call for 5k under special conditions, doing the extra oil changes will really add up.
@@riceburner4747 funny thing is I just had my oil changed at a dealer and the line item said 0w-20. Wondering if it was a mistake, I looked at my last invoice from a different Toyota dealer. It too said 0w-20. Either they don’t charge differently (and don’t have a line item for 0w-16) or the dealers aren’t even following the manufacturer’s standards.
Thankfully, as pointed out, the Hybrid Max/Platinum variant uses "standard" 0W-20. BTW, we have a 2021 Highlander hybrid, and it uses 0W-16. Have the new models went to 0W-8?
@@MASTERNC I think I remember AMD saying they get theirs oil out of drums at dealerships where he uses bottles like us. On my Prius manual, it says I can use 0w-20 but have to go back to 0w-16 next change. AMD mostly says use whats recommended or I'd use 20 in the spring/summer & 16 in the fall/winter.
I test drove a Crown. Nice enough but I still prefer my 95 LS400 or 01 LS430. I came in expecting to be wowed and it just felt a little cheap. I also test drove the new Accord Hybrid - now that felt nice.
I agree. Brought my car in for an oil change and went for a peek in the Toyota showroom. Sat in this new car and it did feel cheap, even compared to the Camry. Camry felt better situated inside and did not give the impression of cheapness.
Outstanding review! I have a recent model, Avalon Touring and it is the best car I have ever owned. I can't believe Toyota discontinued Avalon. It really is a perfect sedan that is larger than the Camry and not as flashy as the ES.
I think it has a stigma. Im happy with my Avalon's. But they tried to make them more kid friendly between 13 and 16 or so? Bumpier ride, stiffer suspension. I most recently bought an 18 and its perfect. Normal 6 with electric power steering. They discontinued it because only old people were buying them.
At 65, I would buy a hybrid car but not a totally electric one. I have a fear of running out of charge on the interstate and getting robbed while sitting on the side of the road. This car is gorgeous and I would consider buying one. I would trade it after 3 years for another one to keep "up".
AMD you are going to be a multi millionaire because you will be one of the few men who can work on these new Toyotas. I am very happy for you because you deserve only good things👍 ps…you will need a bigger shop👍😊
I imported a 1997 Toyota crown from Japan earlier this year and after watching this, I can say that I'd rather drive that than the new one. Under the hood is a inline 6 (2JZ GE) and a simple 4 speed auto. Everything is simple. The interior and even the door panels are wool and super comfortable. And best of all is the styling. I'd recommend anyone reading this comment to go to Google images and look up 1997 Toyota crown. In my opinion it's such a great looking car and has badging for the crown emblem in the grill and C pillars. I don't know why Toyota decided to ditch the crown emblem when it's such an iconic symbol for this lineup. The crown is supposed to be even higher than the LS so it's disappointing to see the new one come out like this.
I LIKE the two toned AMD. Over in Europe the CH-R, YARIS, & AYGO all have that two tone combo. I ALSO love the 21" wheels. Saying this, I wouldnt want price of tires, car, & cost of repairs, I'm sure. 👍🇺🇸
Camry is perfect for people who are still working. It will reliably get you to work cheaply. It actually opens up more jobs opportunities because you can afford to drive further.
Camry XSE AWD is a very good choice but depends on your granddad's health and height. Camry is low to the ground at 5.7 inches of ground clearance. If able to afford a Lexus ES could be better or look into Mazda. Stay far away from Jeep and KIA. Questionable would be the Hyundai Sonata or Tucson. The Crown is a Clown. Toyota overpriced this piece of garbage. Stay within the budget. Financing APR/ Interest Rates are much higher, almost doubled in 2023 than they were last year. Never pay markups. You can always negotiate the price, do not pay MSRP... you can get $500 to $1,500 less than MSRP. Besides the dealer not paying the Destination Fee, you are. Do not pay for tires with Nitrogen as it is a ploy or scam by dealerships to make you pay more. Do not Trade In any Vehicle, unless it is falling apart and nearly not worth fixing. Trade-In is like going to the Pawn Shop and settling with getting 25 to 40 percent of what the item is worth. For example, you paid $3k for a guitar 2 years ago, walk into a Pawn Shop and they offer you $750 when you could have sold it yourself for $2k. Do Not pay for a Warranty (Toyota VSA/ Toyota Care) if your granddad plans on keeping it for less than 5 or 6 years. A 10-year/125K mile $0 Deductible Toyota VSA can be had for less than $1,900. You can call any Toyota Dealership in the United States to get a VSA QUOTE that you are satisfied with and that Toyota VSA is good at All Authorized Toyota Dealerships. Do not get cheated and pay more for a Toyota Care VSA Warranty. Be aware that Interest Rates / APR are higher or nearly doubled in 2023 compared to 2022. Good luck!!!! Have fun shopping and learn how to buy a new car. Leasing is not a good thing unless you can write it off as a business expense. You think you are saving money by getting a Leased vehicle, yes! the monthly payments are low but in the end, it is like tossing money out the window.
@@faheemabbas3965you reckon? I get it’s kinda “nothing to everybody” (like the new Mini’s)… but I think it ticks enough boxes at the price point that it may actually be better than a success. And everyone has fond memories of the crown and cressida
your absolutely right this doesn't feel like a crown I am a really big fan of the previous crowns they were majestic, unique, royal and showed status and presence on the road... I feel Toyota went overboard with this crown which wasn't necessary to my opinion. They should have kept it old school with a touch of class and elegance for the grandpa fans.
I saw this in person and was told at the dealership that it replaced the Avalon. I'm in the market for a full-sized SUV, but as an Avalaon XLS owner, I thought this was so pretty.
That hybrid max configuration sounds like what Mazda did in their new CX90 with the "torque converter-less wet clutch". I wonder if they collaborated on the design.
I bought a limited one last week. I absolutely love my car. One of the nicest cars I have ever driven. My previous cars were sequoia, bmw 330x 2, Lexus GX, Acura MDX, Cadillac escalate, mustang, Honda odyssey. I love love this car. Ride is smooth, powerful, super quiet, fuel efficient, and it looks gorgeous!!! The technology it’s awesome!
Absolutely beautiful car. When my 01 Avalon dies I would like to get this car. My only dislike is I wish the grill wasn’t closed plastic and was actually functional.
Not every grill / vent has to be open The air that would pass through there is redirected elsewhere for good reason. Perhaps more downforce or better aero
Does the manual say 0W-16 can be used permanently, or a temporary replacement? In favor of the 0W-16, our Highlander hybrid uses precisely the same engine and does call for 0W-16. So, is Toyota pushing the envelope to achieve slightly better fuel economy? In a hot climate 0W-8 would scare me.
@@jamesemanner9671 As with any vehicle, they would prefer you use what they recommend. I have heard Toyota dealers putting 0W-16 in these newer cars that are calling for 0W-8 because is simply can't be sourced in high volumes. In all actuality, it's not a huge difference in viscosity and some prefer to use a heavier weight oil. The climate where you live could also play a factor. I can see how people would be scared away from using what's a different oil than what's listed on the car.
That video was suggested to me by TH-cam since I'm looking at the new Crown Signia that will be available this summer. I currently own a 2016 Outback 3.6R Limited and the Signia seems really interesting. So when I saw your video I watched it and it was really interesting! You gave a lot of great details on the mechanical side. I really appreciate that. I'll stay close to what you do and really hope you'll make a review on the Signia too.
I hope Toyota addresses the creep shuttering problem since it is not that bad that the crown does it but is going to be a real problem if the Land Cruiser(Prado) and the new Tacoma have that issue which use a similar powertrain to the crown. It will be much more noticeable in those since those will be doing slow speed off roading which shuttering would be a big problem.
My 1973 Toyota Corona 4spd wagon was great! A truck driver friend even showed me how to "power" shift it - it was like "bump" firing a semi-auto AR ...
Very thorough and well done review. My father had a Crown back in Japan and he loved it. I grew up with the legend of the Toyota Crown. Before he passed, Dad got a Lexus ES350 as it was the closest car to the Crown he could get. He still wanted the name "Crown" on his final car as the name ES 350 didn't speak to him. I have been looking at one of these as a homage to Dad. However, after seeing your review, I have surmised that the first reissue of the Crown in the US is a transitional car for Toyota. I may just wait until Toyota works out the kinks (mechanical and styling wise). Maybe I'll wait for the next update to the Crown.
I finally saw one of these in real-life. At a restaurant. I asked the owner what is it. When he said it was a crown, I was a little bit surprised and thought to myself, NO! So your evaluation appears to be right on the mark. I must admit the one that this person had was white, so it did look a lot better than the one you have right there.
My mom got one last year and immediately wrecked it and said it surged or something (was why she wrecked). It looks more suited to me and she may have bought for the heated steering wheel, ride height(she's short), and gas mileage. She was shocked to learn the gas tank is 10 gallons. I learned a lot from your video and look forward to a test drive with 340hp. The ride height, AWD, and heated steering wheel make it more suitable to northern climates.
If I'm not mistaken, maybe someone can clarify. I think when Subaru did their hybrid Crosstrek and borrowed some of Toyota's technology, they put the motor in the transmission as well. I'm not intimately familiar with hybrids, so maybe that is common practice. But I did read that about the Crosstrek. Because they put the motor in the transmission, they did away with the converter as it was and put in a planetary set.
My brother in law was a cab driver in Hong Kong and the taxi he owned was a Toyota Crown 5 speed manual with the shifter mounted on the steering column.
I own a Corolla that takes 0W-8, and you're right - no one has any in stock. Luckily it's safe to take other oils. The manual calls out 0W-16 but I think up to 0W-40 is safe iirc.
OW-10 to OW20, if unable to get OW-8. Best to consult a Toyota dealership head mechanic because thicker/heavier grades of oil do not flow well and may severely damage the engine.
@@richscott2483 Where did you get 0W-10 to 0W-20? The manual (from June 2023) states: "If SAE 0W-8 is not available, SAE 0W-16 oil may be used However, it must be replaced with SAE 0W-8 at the next oil change." No mention of 0W-10 to 0W-20 at all. The warranty does mention 0W-20, but the warranty is much older and has not updated, unlike the manual.
I like your car videos and explanations and also point out vehicle parts in general. The one I like is you show underneath the vehicle you are showcasing. I do not see too many car TH-camrs talking about the underbelly of a car and pointing their camera at it. It is important to see what is under a car that we all are investing a lot of money on. I like to see all of the car before I buy especially underneath it. I want to see the build quality and parts also are the parts cheap looking or sub par.
That's exactly the kind of car I want to buy in a year. My LS 460 Sport Edition is getting to be too much to justify on such an old vehicle. The entire brake system is a nightmare. All the rubber is a nightmare - how many control arms is too much? (I didn't do a single thing on the 430 suspension in 165K miles.) I was thinking last gen Avalon but honestly don't see how that's better than a lower mileage mid 2010s ES.
I've worked for Toyota for 20+ yrs, I'm excited that they resurrected the Crown name, I was hoping it to be a direct replacement for the Avalon, in my opinion would have made a great patrol car until that added a moon roof, I'm giddy about the Stout

21 inch wheels. Man, I hate the trend toward bigger and bigger wheels. Worse ride, more flats, and higher replacement costs. To paraphrase AMD, ‘that’s not okay’
Toyota should hire this guy ... very good critique. Not a huge fan of those giant holes underneath. That's just asking for trouble in the long term with water and dirt getting up in there. Overall, a very nice looking car and a nice ride.
The auto manufacturers have purposely slowed down production to create an artificial shortage, thus inflating prices by up to 40%. I would never pay 50 grand for a Toyota anyhow, especially considering the Crown will never be as reliable as the Avalon was/is.
I bought the Crown XLE, currently I am facing two issues. first: a lot of noise coming from driver side door and second: I am using android and most of the time the side bar on the screen getting freeze so I cannot select any of the side bar menu and I have to turn the car off and on OR maybe do Bluetooth disconnect and reconnected again..
Thanks AMD. Nice review. You hit the nail on the head. For the money, I’d buy the ES with the v6 while it’s still available. When buying my 2019 Avalon Limited it was about $5,000 less then the ES. Love the Avalon but should have gone with the ES for better seats.
My wife and I just got a red crown XLE. Love it! I think the target audience would be professional young adults who don’t have kids yet but will have them in the near future.
simple answer: no. I'm 6'2" and I cannot comfortable fit in the rear seat of the new Toyota Crown. (when the driver's seat is adjusted to my driving position)
For such a big car that's very disappointing. Nobody needs swoopy rears. The traditional sedan shape allows for great headroom in the back. This Crown is not a traditional sedan, it's a grotesque chimera.
Agree with your assessment. Drivetrain-wise, I’m sure this is a great car. And you’re right about the looks. It’s a little avant-garde for my taste. Think of what Crowns look like in Japan and overseas. Think of the Crown Majestas, the Crown Estates (wagon) and Crown Athletes of the early 2000s to 2010s. Those are stylish cars!
Avant garde? This is Toyota's answer to the Ford Edsel, AMC Pacer and Honda Crosstour. The Crown Sport CUV is on the way to try to rescue the Crown name in North America.
I really enjoy your instructional videos and explaining expertise “ I have a 2010 FJ Cruiser, I replaced the Battery and alternator and the red battery light is still on ‘ any advice ? Thanks
Are they like the VW and other makes where you have to take a scan tool and tell the computer that you changed the battery and input the batter info? Then that changes the alternator charging process.
I really like this car and would be perfect for me and my wife. I was looking to trade our low mileage '18 RAV4 XLE Hybrid but this car in my opinion is way overpriced as are most cars today. I live in GA and with even a base model when you add the "garbage" fees and useless options the dealer adds plus the 7% sales tax and doc fees the dealers want, even the base model is FIFTY SIX thousand dollars out the door. NO THANK YOU!!
I'm 42 years old and I really like everything about this car, including how it looks. The problem is my 09 Yaris is still going strong and I just can't justify it when I already own a hidden gem.
Question for AMD or other mechanics. How long would it take for the aluminum knuckle to weld itself to the wheel bearing? AMD mentions this in a lot of his videos, but I don’t know how big of a deal this is if it doesn’t happen until many years have passed.
One good thing about this car is..I want a sedan with a bit high seating position and this is exactly what it is.
Hey ,
Which trim did you go with. And any problems with the car mechanically?
Thanks
Do you have that jerking at the low speed he was talking about, either forward or backing up?

Nice. I pick up my Limited next week. Looking forward to it!

I saw that video, it seems to me prepared in advance as an advertisement, there was a camera man on the side!
I like this car, and think it has great features. It was one of the new vehicles I considered, but the price imo is inflated. I ended up buying a Camry XSE AWD.
Better choice by far
Agreed. The Camry is such a better buy and honestly a better vehicle than the crown
Love my Camry V6. Got 37 MPG on my trip from Orlando to Asheville
The other day I got 40mpg on the highway when driving home from work. I was astonished
Mines a 2020 XSE v6 but even 4 years later I’ve yet to find a Toyota or Lexus that’s objectively better than the Camry. So far only the lc500 is better than the Camry
@empi492 but you’ll get less performance. The Camry w the v6 can get 28mpg mixed
Yea, I had one, I wish I kept it.

Prius is okay. Ever watched ventriloquist Jeff Dunham ...he tells a fantastic joke/story about his Prius. Buy a Lexus if you do. The Crown is a Clown.

I'm glad that Toyota still makes sedans.

@@seethingsclearlyawaken3424 That might be so for you, the eye of the beholder, in which case do not buy it!
@@richscott2483 You have been saying this on every crown video. I'm starting to think your hating or envious of the car.

Buy a Lexus. The Crown is a Clown.

My uncle, who lived in Japan and was the president of a shipping company in Chiba, used to have a Crown as his company car. I remember riding in it back in the 60's and early 70's when I visited him and it was a really comfortable, luxury car.
I wonder if AMD is running 0w-16 in his Camry? 🤔 And would he run 0w-16 in a Crown?
@@riceburner4747 funny thing is I just had my oil changed at a dealer and the line item said 0w-20. Wondering if it was a mistake, I looked at my last invoice from a different Toyota dealer. It too said 0w-20. Either they don’t charge differently (and don’t have a line item for 0w-16) or the dealers aren’t even following the manufacturer’s standards.

Yep, I've got an Athlete. This is model definitely disappointing. Looks like a Hyundai too - targeting the same consumer I'd say

I almost couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the rear view camera cleaner 😵
your absolutely right this doesn't feel like a crown I am a really big fan of the previous crowns they were majestic, unique, royal and showed status and presence on the road... I feel Toyota went overboard with this crown which wasn't necessary to my opinion. They should have kept it old school with a touch of class and elegance for the grandpa fans.
Yes, they are planning to build a good looking Crown sedan for the Japanese market. We don't know yet if that will come here.
I saw this in person and was told at the dealership that it replaced the Avalon. I'm in the market for a full-sized SUV, but as an Avalaon XLS owner, I thought this was so pretty.
I drove one and was comfortable. Had a little more lean in curves than my 2020 Avalon XLE. Lane assist worked well. Seems priced a little high.
That hybrid max configuration sounds like what Mazda did in their new CX90 with the "torque converter-less wet clutch". I wonder if they collaborated on the design.
and here is a memo. Its a POS....lol. Crappy drivability and complexity nightmare.
Getting in and out was pretty difficult. I am 5'8" but managed to hit my head getting out. 😂
Absolutely beautiful car. When my 01 Avalon dies I would like to get this car. My only dislike is I wish the grill wasn’t closed plastic and was actually functional.
Not every grill / vent has to be open
The air that would pass through there is redirected elsewhere for good reason. Perhaps more downforce or better aero
States in the manual that 0W-16 can be used as a replacement. I believe the Corolla is also calling for 0W-8
Is this suppose to be an Avalon replacement.? I’m bummed that they discontinued the Avalon.
You may want to look at any of the Lexus GS. The 1st 3 generation were based on the Crown. The 4th gen GS is somewhat related to the Crown.
When I finally saw one in person I realized it was just as awful as all the Crowns I had seen on video. 😱
get a Lexus as the Crown is a Clown.
@@richscott2483 here you go again, smh! Stop commenting and hating.
26:35 this is exactly why I subbed to this channel! Love these small little details! Long time Car Care Nut and Toyota fan!
Absolutely beautiful car! Thanks for this video 😊
This video was a real eye opener! This makes me feel that there is a lot of hype around Toyota design, quality, and reliability. Great job.
Great content as usual. AMD I never miss any . Has Toyota employed more German engineers? Just saying.
The manual (from June 2023) states:
"If SAE 0W-8 is not available,
SAE 0W-16 oil may be used
However, it must be replaced
with SAE 0W-8 at the next oil
change."
No mention of 0W-10 to 0W-20 at all. The warranty does mention 0W-20, but the warranty is much older and has not updated, unlike the manual.
I’m getting Motul Ow-8 for my crown
@@El_Gato718 LIQUI MOLY Special Tec AA 0W-8, if you can find it.
Is the suspension still good compared to its previous model
I think I’ll keep and continue to drive my very reliable “grandpa car” my 2015 ES350 currently with 35K.
2013 gs 350 with 89k miles reporting in 🫡
As a replacement for the outgoing Avalon I really like this car and I do like the fast back look.
I've worked for Toyota for 20+ yrs, I'm excited that they resurrected the Crown name, I was hoping it to be a direct replacement for the Avalon, in my opinion would have made a great patrol car until that added a moon roof, I'm giddy about the Stout
What have you heard about the Stout? There's lots of rumors and people hoping for it.
🤬
I have the 2024 Platinum and love it so far. It's like me - hard to figure out what it's about and lots of fun.
Grandpa here that thought this was going to be a hybrid raised sedan that would be at home in Alaska, Yukon, and BC. I was ready to write the check. And then I saw the ground clearance. No way. Bought a Venza and I am content(with 45.8 mpg).
@@jdslyman I'm not certain. I keep it in the "Econo" Mode and most of my driving is in rural and suburban areas where the fastest I drive is 45-55 mph. It just doesn't need to go to the gas station very often.
Good decision. Venza is much better than Toyota Crown the Clown.
Love my 2023 Venza. Very comfortable and great gas mileage.
21 inch wheels. Man, I hate the trend toward bigger and bigger wheels. Worse ride, more flats, and higher replacement costs.
To paraphrase AMD, ‘that’s not okay’
The problem with 21 rims they get real expensive like the old venza only two manufactures made the tires michelin an bridgstone
This is such a good upgraded lighting and camera setup, better looking than toyota website
Did your issues ever get resolved 😢
It doesn't look like anything else on the road which I believe is its best feature.
Love my Avalon Limited. Crown tires and rims look like a nightmare to maintain.
Pot holes will eat them alive.
not to mention a loud, rough ride.
Avalon may not be a great sedan but surely much better than the Crown is a Clown.
Answer....yes, yes you should. My buddy just got one....excellent.
I think you mean looks are subjective, not objective. Otherwise, excellent overview of the new Crown!
Thanks AMD. Nice review.
You hit the nail on the head. For the money, I’d buy the ES with the v6 while it’s still available.
When buying my 2019 Avalon Limited it was about $5,000 less then the ES. Love the Avalon but should have gone with the ES for better seats.
Another great review…would love to see this as a wagon/hatchback..maybe the Sport will redeem the Crown..
Get a Lexus. The Crown is a Clown.
I like my 2019 Avalon Hybrid Limited with the technology package much better…. And I paid $36,700 out the door brand new.
I really enjoy your instructional videos and explaining expertise “
I have a 2010 FJ Cruiser, I replaced the Battery and alternator and the red battery light is still on ‘
any advice ?
Thanks
Are they like the VW and other makes where you have to take a scan tool and tell the computer that you changed the battery and input the batter info? Then that changes the alternator charging process.
Belt, battery cables, wiring ?
My 1957 Plymouth Fury had left hand thread bolts holding the wheels on.
Crown got my attention on the road, looks great and stylish
