This song is an homage to the OGs. Jennie starts with Biggie line, Lisa then does Rihanna and 50 cent, Rosé and Jisoo shout out Taylor Swift….. That’s the reason the retro feel and clothing come through.

OK, here's the BLACKPINK "elevator pitch": The four members all came from different places, only one was born and raised in S. Korea. The girls were signed between 2010-2012 when they were 14-16 years old. They trained for six years; seven days a week, fourteen hours a day until they debuted in August 2016. Both of their debuts songs BOOMBAYAH and WHISTLE were hits, WHISTLE broke the record for the fastest that a new group reached number one in the charts. Since then, the majority of their 23 original songs have been record-breaking hits. They're currently the most-subscribed musical artist on TH-cam with almost 80 million subs and their TH-cam channel has over 25 Billion views. The girls are multilingual, speaking 3-5 languages each and they're each Global Ambassadors to different luxury brands. Their fans, called BLINKS (which is the word BLACKPINK smushed together) are fiercely loyal and protective of their girls, as they know how hard they've worked to achieve their position in the music world.

Blackpink “lisa” the 2nd rapper from the intro can speak 5 languages. Fluently in 3 languages: english, thai and korean. Advanced in japanese and basic in chinese. Majority of the other members can speak 3 languages.
The first song I heard from them was "How you like that", but I wasn't used to kpop mvs so it was a lot of visual information at once for me and I ended up not enjoying it and not listening to the song properly.
Huge Blink here, any MV on their channel with over a billion views will make you smile. And other non cutesy groups to consider are (G)-Idle, two latest vids are Tomboy, My Bag dance performance and also Dreamcatcher which is more of a rock driven group, try Scream and Deja-Vu.
I like how you went through first digesting the mv and song and then a second time digesting the lyrics. Even though bp doesnt have much deep lyrics in their mvs and their chorus' typically have lyrics that are intended to be catchy rather than meaningful, it just feels very powerful and also empowering. I love blackpink so much and im definetely subbing here.
Blackpink has had one producer since their debut, IMO, the greatest producer in all Kpop, Teddy Park, Korean American. He is a former rap star at YG, turned producer. That is why you get the masculine trap vibe in most Blackpink MVs. Teddy is a master of combining seamlessly Rap, R&B, EDM, Pop, Country (yep, Country, Whistle MV), Latin vibes, Middle Eastern and Asian instrumentals. Which is way beyond the capabilities of just about any Western producer. Teddy runs his own sublabel in YG, The Black Label.
I suggest starting by watching them live. Tokyo Dome "Ddu Du Ddu Du" Remix. Follow that with their entire Tokyo Dome concert, then start watching their official M/Vs. Blackpink is the real deal. The only other girl group I will listen to is ITZY and they are still miles behind Blackpink as far as talent goes.
