2:27 the tank is 100% real and refers to the music video of "DDU DU DDU DU", actually each scene of the SHUT DOWN music video refers to the most classic music videos of the group in a sense of homage.

"‘Shut Down’ is a track that takes the consistent charisma BLACKPINK has shown so far to the next level. The combination of classic and trendy hip hop beats is memorable and it has the charm of feeling new while also being very catchy. I also think that the sensible and witty lyrics and the point choreography that depicts ‘Shut Down’ instinctively will become fun elements. I hope that the emotions and exciting thrill we first felt are conveyed to everyone who listens to the song."

Fellow metal head (52 years old). Great review. Love your perspective from your background and experience. You clearly know way more about music and production than I do. Been a huge Blackpink fan literally since Day 1. It’s been fun watching their rise over the last 6-7 years. They exploded in just a couple years from their start…they came out of the gate blazing.
Been trying to tell people about them in the U.S. for many years…mostly in vain. Now I’m like “hmmmmpp….see…told you so.” 😂

I am an older guy grew up with a lot of 80s rock and 90s rock metal and country music when I found this group I absolutely fell in love with them that was six years ago. I have been following them ever since I’m going down this rabbit hole it’s been amazing. All their songs have great meaning to them you should watch their songs from beginning to end and you would understand the more.

Fun Fact: While Pink Venom was an homage to other artists that inspired Blackpink's sound, the music video for Shut Down is an homage to their own music, showing it's evolution as they are now leaving that behind and evolving into a new sound. The Shut Down mv is full of easter eggs on Blackpink's past mvs - from repeated or reworked sets, to props, to iconic shots from past mvs, etc.
A few iconic moments that are call backs in Shut Down are: Jennie in the bedazzled tank, the set in which Lisa is dancing in the rain, Rosé sitting on top of the globe, Jisoo's face reveal from behind the umbrella, Jennie rapping in the tub while playing with a match, Jisoo standing in front of a picture from a past mv while holding a camera, the final chorus set is filled with mentions to their past music in the posters and signs, etc (as there are many others).
The Shut Down mv was a true treat for their fans.

Well, having just seen this performed live Sunday night I can tell you that it translates beautifully to the stage. When you have for all intents and purposes an unlimited budget combined with these four mega-talented women you end up with a product that's unmatched by anyone anywhere in the world today. There's a reason why they're considered to be the the top female group in the world and by some possibly of all time. And if you have your doubts then all you need do is to attend their current world tour and any doubts you have will be 'shut down'. I'm older than you, probably by far and I've been attending concerts since the late 60's and I've never seen anything like what I saw Sunday night. I'm still recovering from the experience 🙂

As for what I think Shut Down is about, I think it is a triple entendre. 1) Black Pink has been getting some hate from people for different reasons but I think mainly jealousy so Rosè's last line "keep talking we'll shut you down" is one meaning. 2) They have become so popular that fans from everywhere literally block up streets, venues, airports, events etc that it literally shuts the area down when they show up. 3) I think BP is evolving and they were paying homage to where they came from and shutting the doors on that chapter of their sound and we are going to be seeing a new side of them. Born Pink is a rebirth album and I am excited to see what they have in store for future projects.

BLACKPINK never uses cgi or green screens, everything is 100% real and that is what characterizes the group before other kpop groups, BLACKPINK's audiovisual productions are impeccable and multimillion-dollar and are magnificent because they invest large budgets of money to do everything with sets real and real practical effects. (BLACKPINK's only mv with cgi is WHISTLE, and he's forgiven because it's his debut mv)

This video pays homage to a lot of their previous music videos. They redid a lot of their iconic shots from pervious videos with a new twist or flavor. Like the disco tank, they did in DDU-DU DDU-DU is actually a different tank here.
For me, one of my favorite scenes calls back the M/V for Stay where they're skipping away from the camera. It's an iconic scene from one of their least watched videos, but they did it anyway knowing that real BLINKs would catch it.

SHUT DOWN is the title track of BLACKPINK's new album, the album is called "BORN PINK" it was released on september 16th, 2022 and it is the FIRST album of a KPOP GIRL GROUP (in all history) to reach #1 on BILLBOARD 200 USA ALBUM SALES, and "SHUT DOWN" it is also the first kpop song in history to be #1 on SPOTIFY GLOBAL for 6 consecutive days, and so far the song has won 10 music awards in KOREA, the song achieved 50 million views views the day of its premiere on youtube and is dedicated to BLACKPINK haters, the best thing is that it identifies the group for being totally urban and the best thing is that the beat is "LA CAMPANELLA" by the great Italian violinist of classical music PAGANINI.
    BLACKPINK+ PAGANINI= *SHUT DOWN.*

Speaking to their fashion, I'm pretty sure the members of Blackpink are always in charge of, or at least have the final say in their own fashion looks for everything they do. All four of the girls are also global fashion ambassadors of high fashion luxury brands; Jennie for CK, Hera and Chanel, Jisoo for Dior and Cartier, Rosé for Yves Saint Laurent and Tiffany & Co., and Lisa for Bulgari and Celine. Which gives meaning to Jennie's line, "Need a lesson, see the necklaces, see these dresses, we don't buy it, we request it". They don't have to buy their high fashion looks, if they really want something they'll request it and get it for free.

Love the point of view about all the creativity and hard work that goes into creating not only music but music videos too. A lot of people do take it for granted and doesn’t really care about hard work behind the scenes because we’re so used to green screen we forget what it takes to make it all with our own hands 🙌
Blackpink is one of those rare examples where almost 100% of what you see in the video is real and not CGI (throughout their 6 year career it’s been used only twice for one scene), most sets are build from the scrap just for the music video - even when they go to locations those places are also specifically altered and decorated (you can watch behind the scenes videos of every music video) and whenever you see water, fire etc it’s also real.

You are so accurate when you said that it's so minimalist and that it'san anthem. The whole thing about the production being a collective effort of tens or hundreds of team members is also accurate. What makes KPop the thing that it is now is the whole industry working behind it.
Damn, on point reactions as always.

  • @kylerichmond4806
    @kylerichmond4806 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Great reaction! As some people have mentioned there are a lot of Easter eggs from previous MVs shown in this video like props, but not only props but an entire set. Lisa on the Pier is from the MV Playing With Fire, but redone in in more of a blue or winter/snow visual. The street scene has signs that shout out a lot of their previous songs and some solo songs. You are correct when you mention the attention to detail and hard work the set design team uses when building their sets. The other unique thing is they only do music videos for their title tracks or singles before they released full albums. So I would imagine as soon as they decide on title tracks set production begins immediately.

It's awesome how you pointed out about the difficulty or should I say challenge in creating outfits for each members especially that they are in the same group and outfits should be coordinated. However, the main challenge lies in the fact that these four members are global ambassadors of four major clothing brands: Chanel, Celine, YSL and Dior. So for each member, they definitely has to style them according to what brand they endorse but not going away from being coordinated.

Throughout the years, there has been many documentaries about the kpop industry. With blackpink being so readily available on so many platforms; TH-cam, Spotify, Netflix, instagram, tiktok, etc... we're at a point where the new generations of kpop fans have an unlimited amount of media content available at their fingertips. This allow kpop and blackpink to reach new heights that other groups in the past can only dream of.
The groups that I followed in the past... we had to try and sign up on Korean websites to be able to view the content... sometimes that require a citizen number which we don't have so we have to wait for a fan in Korea to record the performance and upload it to the fansite for us to download. We had teams of dedicated fans ready to translate a new music video so international fans can understand... now more and more content are being translated by the company themselves. What a time to be a kpop fan
The kpop training programs can basically be compared to special forces training. Years and years of intense training to groom these artists to be proficient at everything; singing, dancing, public speaking, TV appearances, stage performances down to the facial expressions.
Some hate that side of kpop because it's very manufactured, and it is... but at the same time, you can't argue with the amazingly polished result that is presented to the world. Korean entertainment (music, movies, show) are their #1 export... it has to be top notch.
There are many documentaries out there but to stay on topic for blackpink... their Netflix documentary "light up the sky" is worth a watch. There is also a fan made TH-cam one entitled "blackpink: the revolution". Not as... "official" but it is very informative about the kpop industry and blackpink themselves.

In Kpop, dozens and dozens of new groups come out every year with essentially the same formula. Get a group of members together. Train them, dress them, style them, and put a production team behind them. At least 90% fail. As usual, the formula may be easy to conceive. Executing said formula to success is a different ball game. Raising that success to new heights is a generational thing. Then you have BlackPink, which is on another level all its own.

Just came across your channel (your blackpink reactions brought me here) and i so love your reaction and how well versed you are in expressing your thoughts on their music and the artistry behind their craft and kpop in general.
12:48 I totally agree!!! I for one, am guilty of this prejudice. As someone who lives in an southeast asian country, i grew up hearing a lot of kpop songs way before it became huge globally. And though i would jam to some of it like the power of pop songs have on us. I was never fan of kpop then, I lean more to rock, metal, country and alternative music wise. Knowing an artist makes their own music or at least has great involvement for me creates that genuine connection between a musician and a listener. And i didnt see that in kpop, i saw them as manufactured and unauthentic. But then i stumbled upon yg groups, which i found out is an agency who gives their artists creative freedom (tho these days a lot of the agencies does the same too). Crazy coz it was after i got into kpop that I learned to appreciate the ENTIRE process of making music. The writing, the producing, the wordplay, the message, conceptualization of single song and and whole album. I learned to appreciate every piece of art from a whole lot different perspective, like you mentioned, a single mv like this is a collective effort and creative ideas of many talented people nit just the artist. Mostly not even seen on cam, of different expertise and its amazing how they are able to put such a masterpiece together.
Crazy too, when i got into kpop i started getting into a whole lot of of other music genres to such as jpop, jrock, hiphop and rnb. Changed my whole life 🤣 music and art in general is truly universal

I feel like art comes in many forms and not al art needs to be enjoyed the same way. For me pop that may seem “overproduced” or “disconnected” or whatever, can still hold value to me, because I can appreciate that the artistry demonstrated, while different to say artsy folk is still artistry. It’s just in a different form. The folk artist connects through visceral, personal poetry, while the K-pop artist may connect through cutting edge performance and powerful, edgy hooks.
Like I always say, good music is good music, you shouldn’t have to defend your preferences. 🤘😝👍

Rose was born in New Zealand but grew up in Australia. Her parents immigrated over seas. Her dad saw an audition flyer for open call to be a trainee in Korea, he told Rose to audition. She had to take Korean classes when she started training in YGE.
Jennie born in Korean study abroad in New Zealand when she was in Primary school and stayed there for a while. she told her parents she wanted to go back to Korea to become a singer. She was the 1st of the group to get into YGE.
Lisa was born in Thailand. She started dancing at a very young age. Open call to be a trainee in Korea, her dance group teacher told her to audition. She got into YGE and started out as a Dancer. She too had to learn Korean. She had a more difficult time learning, luckily she had Jisoo to help her. She was a background dancer in TaeYung's (member of Big Bang - Boy Group in YGE) video for Ringa Linga.
Jisoo is Korean born, she started as an actress trainee when she joined YGE. She starred in a Korean Movie called Snowdrop which aired on Disney + and She won the 17th annual Seoul International Drama Award for Outstanding Korean Actress.

A lot of the shot in this video are à reference to their previous videos. The tank was in a previous video. The video footage where Jisoo is wearing the pink wig is frop an other video also. The katana also. And during the first verse you can see Jennie and Lisa shut down their previous video sets to show tant they're now entering a new area for them. At the end they leave all of their previous set and they take the elevator to go up.
Ps: they are behind the scenes video for all their mv. It would je cool for you to check them out!

Netflix has a documentary about Blackpink and how they came together called Light Up The Sky. The kpop trainee program is hard to describe and difficult to even process how much young people go through for a chance to live their dream.

Loved your analysis about the "artistic merit" towards the end of the video.
I often think of K-pop idols as being similar to Olympic athletes. They have years of training, sacrifice, and isolation from a young age to make them among the best in the world at what they do, but they could not get there without that core talent to begin with. And they are subject to the same intense scrutiny. The biggest difference is that it is more financially rewarding in the end for the successful ones.
Blackpink's producer is Teddy Park (aka TEDDY) who is a former Korean hip-hop performer himself. There is a very interesting segment in the Netflix Blackpink documentary where Teddy asks, "What is K-pop?". He asks because K-pop is not really a musical genre, but just refers to the country of origin of the labels. K-pop groups sound very different from one another. And we don't say every Canadian band is C-pop, or Australian bands are A-pop. I sometimes hear about Brit-pop, but not every British band is part of that genre. Anyway, it made me think.
    Cheers!

so basically this was their "comeback" after a long time (per kpop standards, not per western standards by any means) and during their hiatus they have received lots of hate for the most stupid reasons and they've had companies speaking on them and trying to replicate their success with their girl groups "bunch of wannabes that wanna be me", with this song it was basically their response to all that hate, the last sentence is pretty much self explanatory "keep talking we shut you down" also many other lyrics throughout the song that don't translate really well in english but are basically "you can keep barking but the leash on your neck is mine", "look this is (we are) your answer sheet but it's not cheap (getting to our level doesn't come easy-> in case you don't know the girls had to pass auditions against thousands of other hopefuls and then train for around five years with no guarantee they'd be chosen among the dozens of girls training to be able to debut as blackpink, if you want more info you can check out their documentary on netflix 'light up the sky' but long story short it was a mean world with 14hrs training days, monthly evaluations and one free day every two weeks)". BUT it has a second meaning, all the shots in the video itself are references to their past music videos, but upgraded. you guessed right, they have incredibly high budget for their mvs and build every set and prop from scratch. so basically the sets they close the shutters on are all their past works they're paying homage to and the street alley set they find themselves in the end is 'their area'. you may have noticed their slogan is literally blackpink in your area, all the blackpink posters on the alley are also their song titles (as a group and as soloists) or shops with their names, it quite literally is the visual representation of the hook "when we pull up, pull down your signs and lock the doors, shut down" because they have 'taken over' and hung their own signs. And in the end they take the elevator and go up, to a new place with new sets which is kind of a blank slate simbolizing they're starting a new chapter.
Also all the girls are very involved in the fashion industry so they put a lot of consideration on their outfits themselves and they have been credited as creative directors for this album, if you look up the behind the scenes or interviews they have mentioned they were the ones planning many of the sets appearing in both shut down and pink venom.
ps it translates so well in concert, i unfortunately have not seen it live as they won't come to my country but from the many clips on the internet, it was simply amazing.

I would like to give some info that here in this music video 6-7 references are from their previous songs like The Bridge at the start, Jennie on the bathtub from “Playing with Fire”; the truck filled up with bag with full of cash from “Boombayha”; Rose sitting on planet earth which turned into Black & Pink and all four girls were in the car while Lisa driving are from “Whistle”; Jisoo with umbrella, standing in-front of her portrait and Jennie on the Tank, Rose swings on chandelier, Lisa with Katana are from “DDU DU DDU DU”. There are some poster mentioning to their previous songs “How You Like That”, “Whistle”, “DDU DU DDU DU”, & Pink Venom”. They probably paid homage to their predecessor Girl Group of 2NE1, there are two identical shots like 2NE1 music video like Jisoo standing with Umbrella and Jennie wearing red hat with similar design at the same time closing the scissor gate.
I think every Blink ( Blackpink fans are called Blink) think that this song created specifically as response to the haters and reminding everyone about their revolution like from where did they started their journey, how far they have come till now.

The violin piece is a sample of the Italian classical musician Niccolo Paganini and is called "La campanella". The reason you had some problems with the rhythm is that it's not a classic waltz, the rhythm is 6/8.

Nice to hear someone react to most everything that's going on. Check out the set at 9:16, and really look at everything... every sign, the advertising, etc. In their videos BP very, very rarely use green screen or CGI. All of the sets are hand made. Over the years they sometimes have parts of the "old" sets in their newer videos. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the "Pink Venom" video was in the area of $12 million to produce.

Shut Down is actually a clapback song tp their haters (they have so many, since people are jealous of their fame). They talk a lot about them, they are obsessed (as all haters), so that's what this song is aboit, Blackpink never says anything back, because they don't need to, they always shut down those haters with ther achievements (some are listed in the songs, personal and in group). And this MV actually shows a journey to their discography, they show a lot of scenes that comes from older MVs (all individual scenes are a reference to old MVs of them), so it's also about their journey, that it was hard, it was full of people praying for their downfall, but in the end, they always shut them down.

It's always good fun to see how BlackPink impact people of all walks of life. Unexpectedly, a lot of people who are into metal take a liking to them. They are something unique and it's very worth while to listen to there older stuff too. All there videos are spectacular so very worth watching too. They very rarely uses CGI and very few real world locations. And when they do use real world locations they dress them up extensively. Most of there videos are huge sets build for a few seconds of video. I suggest you go back in time and see what they did before. I would say watch all there videos (from whistle and boombaya to now, shot down as you already did) but if you want the short list here is my suggestions:
Whistle (it's great and there first so you can see where they came from)
Du Duu Du Duu - huge hit from them
How you like that - a classic
Kill this love - great song and video
Then do some of the songs with no video. They have videos with lyrics in english and a picture of each girl getting highlighted so you can see who is singing - to see other sides of the girls:
you never know - color coded lyrics video
Savage - color coded lyrics video
The happiest girl - color coded lyrics
Rose', Jenny and Lisa all have solos that are worth watching too. As a special treat, i would say watch Lisa's dance films. They are very short but pure eye candy. She have her own youtube channel called Lilifilm Official. There you can find:
    Lilly film #1: th-cam.com/video/w62vZn2VgkM/w-d-xo.html
    Lilly film #2: th-cam.com/video/By61X4Ku9JE/w-d-xo.html
Lilly film #3: th-cam.com/video/je_R3gEtDbw/w-d-xo.html (keep a defibrillator handy)
    Lilly film #4: th-cam.com/video/6U-4Y17xMRY/w-d-xo.html
    Lilly film: The Movie: th-cam.com/video/vtRJZEHdu8M/w-d-xo.html
There, your basic BlackPink education. Of course, there is BlackPink: light up the sky on Netflix. Great documentary about them and how they came to be. Worth a watch too

FIrst time watching your reaction videos. It's really interesting what you say about the production quality and effort put into creating this kind of videos/music. Being a K-pop fan as it is my own culture but not necessarily a Blackpink fan, I could still agree with what you say and I feel like that's what general Korean K-pop fans (not saying that international K-pop fans aren't like that) have been seeking as a standard for a long time, therefore such industry sort of formed and developed in the way we see now through these big name K-pop bands. Interesting video in general, I like hearing your view as a producer. Cheers.

I've been a metalhead for over 50 years - my journey started in 1971 when I herd the "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin. I like singles across many genres, but I am a full-on metalhead. For reference, Lovebites is my all-time favorite band because they blend power/speed/thrash/heavy metal influenced mainly by the 80's metal scene.
I am only weeks into my Blackpink journey. Blackpink breaks through my metal wall for a few reasons. They have great voices, their music videos are simply insane, their beats are forward and dig in, and they bring swagger. When they sing, they do it with attitude!!

BlackPink is well known for their A-side bangers but equally good and sometimes great are all their B-side tracks which do not have an official music video but you can find color-coded lyric videos which provides pictures of each member highlighted during their verse. Go check out “Don’t Know What to Do”, “Forever Young”, “See U Later”, “Really”, “Kick It”, and “ Hope Not”. I also recommend you check out live versions of these song which shows off their live vocal prowess. Enjoy!

When I was a teenager, my friend and I only listened to heavy metal... mainly Metallica and Iron Maiden. We used to joke and say that if anyone wanted to torture us, they should lock us up in a room and only play pop music. Now, close on 30 years later, if I hear a song that I enjoy, it goes on my playlist. Doesn't matter what genre it is. My playlist comprises music from a number of different genres, ranging from about the 1950's until today. Peoples taste in music, or anything for that matter, changes over time, and I see it with younger youtubers that are listening to, and actually enjoying the older bands/ groups, like Queen, ACDC, The BeeGees and The Eagles.... just to name a few....

This song is for the haters . Like you said there is a ton of professionals involved along with the artists efforts to make the song every song. Off lately they have been on the top in every song they make every year so there are a lot of haters for these girls because they rule the k-pop world and they want their artist to be that. They fail to understand that it's a teamwork between the artists and the production to make a song a hit. The haters know that blackpink have it in them and that's why they hate them . What the haters fail to understand is that you need good production house and good team and the artists are hard working and humble and there is respect and understanding between the artists and team to work for long run and be successful. It's one team and that's y BTS and Blackpink rule the charts always.. For the sets and backend production you need to see the making of the song videos.. This song is performed as an anthem on previous songs of blackpink all m/vs including their solos.. It's just reviewing their journey from before to now..
