Hutchinson - It sounds like your CDI is gone. You can check it against the OEM specs found in the service manual. I don't have the manual for this particular engine.
My outboard is running backwards - no telltale. Timing light shows spark timing on no.1 cyl is about TDC, but when testing the no.2 cyl spark is around 160 BTDC. This is causing the engine to kick back and run in reverse. Why is the number 2 cylinder firing so differently from no.1 cyl? In 1980, using the same flywheel, how did Mercury separate no.1 spark plug from the no.2 plug so that they could fire differently?
Mike - the trigger coil is a switch that sends a trigger signal to the outboard’s capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) module. The module takes a steady flow of low voltage DC current from the regulator, briefly stores it, and allows the current to charge and the voltage to build up. When the CDI module receives the trigger signal from the pulser coil, it rapidly discharges the now higher voltage current into the ignition coil.
@@cleancarburetor Replaced, was not that. Turns out its only not getting spark after it warms up. Then starts dying. Gonna be above my paygrade, took it in to the shop. Thanks anyway!
Hi mate I have a 3 cylinder two stroke evinrude 1997, 70hp with no spark in any cylinder. It never missed a beat until we arrived at the islands then it didn't start and hasn't since. After tracking all the wires I found the plug coming from the stator to the cdi was seized together. Dismantled and fixed that. Still no spark, sometimes when motor is cold after sitting for a day it will cough but not run continuously. I've replaced the rectifier because that was clearly damaged in the gel case behind the unit and getting very hot. Any idea if it sounds like a trigger or cdi or stator. Should I just replace it all?
I am no pro at any of this stuff but for what I know I will say replace it all! After all you will be making your boat as good as new! I am working on mine with the same issues and I am waiting for the stator, trigger, coils, wires, spark plugs, cdi box etc...
I’m losing power in the mid range after the engine warms up I have good power in the lower throttle and then as accelerate and it bogs out but if I slam Forwards into maximum throttle the engine will grip and take and I’ll get out of the slot and take off…I have changed the stater and the trigger I’ve ordered a CDI and I’m scratching my head about what to do next the only other thing I can think of is that the thermostat might be seized and when the engine gets hot it starts to act up. when I start the engine when it’s cold I have full throttle through full range from low power all the way to maximum power but once I’m out there for half an hour running… if I stop and I try and start then the engine bogs in the mid range.
what happens if you connect the 2 yellow wires from the stator opposite to the rectifier? My stator has 2 yello wires with no stripe etc..... I need to replace but i do not know which yellow wires goes to where
1969 55 horsepower 3 cylinder the wires going into the power pack or deteriorated it appears that possibly got hot can we use the power pack off of a 4-cylinder
Great explanation of how the ignition system works on a outboard motor.
Can you please show or comment how to test the CDI box,i have seen the rest of the videos and they have been of great help.

do you have a wiring diagram show wire colors of the ignition system and thermal switch. your videos have been so helpful.
The water is calling!!😎👍
How do u test each one??
thx. how much voltage produces the stator_? AC? mono phase or dual phase? how much voltage uses sparksplugs etc

In any case if the pick-up coil ignation timing properly works magnet or governor , then will the CDI unit run??
how to test the TRIGGER signal while cranking the engine, in no spark condition
I have a 2 Stroke engine. The bottom cylinder is getting no spark. What do you think this is, most likely?
Ryan- check your ignition coil

We change out the power pack and 3 coil pack and still no spark is it the stator that is out

Alexander - what outboard do you have? And carburetor is on it?

if the wires are of the same color, it doesn't matter
What yr is your motor ??

Mine doesn’t have a power pack how’s it working
How to recognise a faulty trigger please?
Sorry about late reply. Please watch this video:

Only one way to find out.
I have a 1999 mercury 125 2stroke 4cylinder 2+2 Mine is not firing on the 3rd cylinder from the top I changed the coil pack and it’s still not firing
is there a spark on the spark plug?
Thx
Looks like you left out the kill switch.
